This grand apartment is set on one of Edinburgh’s most esteemed addresses. Even the street name is soaked in culture and history – named after the Enlightenment poet, Allan Ramsay the Elder who built the first structure here in 1733. And as soon as you step inside, you can see how culture and creativity have transcended the centuries.

Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

If you’re one for afternoon naps, you’ll be very taken by the sheer size of this bedroom. Doze off on the comfy bed as the afternoon sun starts to dip and wake up refreshed to head out for a night on the town.

That said, you can reach Edinburgh's city centre easily enough either via car, public transport, or on foot if you’re feeling fit enough, making it an ideal base for friends and families alike.

Experience a stay like no other at this cosy Gothic castle, part of an unfinished design for Edinburgh’s first observatory. At the top of Calton Hill, you'll have some truly breathtaking views from this historical home. The National Gallery is next door and the rest of the city is a short walk away, easily making up for the lack of parking. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. That said, the main bedroom enjoys an en-suite with a luxurious standalone bathtub, and there's outdoor seating to make the most of this stunning location.

The Stargazer's Retreat

Housed in a beautifully preserved Georgian townhouse, this chic apartment in Edinburgh’s New Town will make you feel right at home. We love the contrast between the dark wood floors, sage-coloured walls and blush pink armchairs, creating a soft and intimate setting for a relaxing stay. Although a studio apartment, space is cleverly maximised here thanks to clever design details, like the wooden floor-to-ceiling beams that create a separation between the living and dining areas, and the cute kitchenette concealed within a stunning feature cabinet. After waking up and enjoying a soak under the tiled bathroom’s rainfall shower, head out for a stroll around Queen Street Gardens, just across the road. You’re also just a six-minute walk from shop-lined Princes Street, a twelve-minute walk from Edinburgh Castle and a fourteen-minute amble from Calton Hill with its panoramic views over the city.

Located in Abbey Hill, this cosy studio apartment offers comfort and ease in a wonderful part of Edinburgh. From here, you can stroll into the Old Town and you’ll find a great selection of local pubs, cafes and shops. You can also walk to Arthur’s Seat and there are great public transport links – making it easy to get around. It’s worth noting the apartment is set across one room, but it’s the ideal base for couples and solo travellers in search of a laidback space to call home.

We love this architect-designed home, furnished with luxury BoConcept furniture. Relax with your family and friends on the huge sofa, then whip up a full Scottish breakfast in the stylish kitchen. It’s not often we mention an extractor fan, but the one here is quite funky. There’s a homely vibe with the mix of art and plants too. On warm summer days, unwind in the enclosed garden and have a picnic on the grass.

Or head out to explore the delights of Edinburgh, while the Queen’s official Scottish residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, is just a ten-minute amble. The Royal Mile and Scottish Parliament are both a fifteen-minute saunter away. Or take the family to Dynamic Earth, a state-of-the-art attraction that tells the story of the planet Earth, a seventeen-minute walk. Another visitor favourite, Edinburgh Castle, is just over thirty minutes on foot (twelve minutes in the car).

With this Buckstone cottage, you get the best of both worlds. Edinburgh city centre and all its landmarks are only a twenty-minute drive away, but you'll have excellent walks, the Seven Hills viewpoint, and leafy parks practically on your doorstep. Better still, a private front garden here will surely be a hit when the sun is out. It's the perfect spot to wind down in the evenings, though the light-filled living area is also a fine place to relax. The bedrooms are a little snug, but we think it does the job for a laid-back stay on the outskirts of the city.

This is a genuinely special home, with an abundance of character and sophistication, with everything finished to a high quality. The location was equally impressive, found on a quiet cobbled street just off a main busy road, within walking distance of the city centre. While the striking master bedroom came close, the living room was our favourite room in the home. It feels almost like an old school drawing room, but with an added comfort factor. There's also great attention to detail, such as the drawer of hot water bottles in the kitchen for those rainy Scottish evenings.
