Despite being in the basement, you'll still get some natural light here (when the sun breaks through the clouds, at least), but some rooms do get less than others. While it might feel a world away from the city centre, this home is less than ten minutes from the heart of Princes Street – where sights, shopping, and scenery awaits. In an elegant Georgian building fronted by huge columns and gothic railings, this top-floor flat is at the height of style, and of the city. Despite its historic exterior, the decor is modern and understated. And your first stop upon entering has to be the panoramic views of rooftops and the glistening Firth of Forth from the lounge windows. Trust us, this stony scene looks even more dramatic on a famous Scottish rainy day. If you’re staying in, enjoy your own drizzle in the rainfall shower before cosying up on the plush sofa with a tea. For a local wander, visit the Dean Village, just twelve minutes away on foot. This picturesque neighbourhood, founded in the 12th century, is one of the most tranquil and beautiful spots in town. From here, head down to Stockbridge for pubs, cafés, and vintage shopping thirteen minutes from home.

It's on the lower-ground floor, so it does lack light, but it's beyond roomy – there's more than enough space here to sprawl out. After a busy, settle down on the plush sofa with a glass of scotch or unwind with a soak in the master bathtub. If you're in the mood to cook, the modern kitchen has a good supply of crockery and dinnerware to make self-catering easy. There's also a small courtyard out back for when you want a breath of fresh air. Found in Edinburgh's West End, this home is within walking distance of the art galleries, bars, eateries and shops in New Town (about fifteen minutes away). The tram runs past the front of the apartment and Haymarket Station is a right down the road, so you're well-connected to the city. We suggest strolling over to Dean Village and along the Water of Leith Walkway – about fifteen minutes on foot – while Edinburgh Castle and Old Town are must-sees for history buffs, reachable in twenty minutes.

Not far from Edinburgh Castle, this apartment is in a great spot, close enough to the tourist sights but away from the crush of the Royal Mile. Despite this enviable location, it’s a surprisingly big place, and everything feels very high end. The interiors are relaxed without being too casual — traditional touches, such as the tan leather sofas and the original marble fireplace, mix well with more contemporary flourishes like the glass dining table and the plethora of artwork on display. We’d also be remiss not to mention the wonderful view of the castle, which can be reached in ten minutes on foot. Even closer is the greenery of Princes Street Garden, while there are shops and restaurants galore on nearby George Street.

Just a few steps from Princes Street, the location of this Edinburgh apartment is spot-on. You'll be walking distance from a bevvy of restaurants and not far from landmarks like Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. Its central location makes noise likely, especially since floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the street. That aside, it's a cosy place to come home to after sightseeing. The leather sofa is a great spot to curl up with a scotch, while the desk and high-speed wi-fi are ideal if you're in town on business. Keep in mind that the first floor is only accessible by stairs and free parking isn't provided – not dealbreakers though if you're keen to be in the heart of the city.

Nestled between the regal buildings of Edinburgh’s UNESCO New Town, this beautiful apartment puts you right in the West End. With Princes Street a mere five minute walk away, you’ll not only wind up in the buzzing centre of the city, but also have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Wander through the cosy neighbourhood and pop into one of the many restaurants serving fresh Scottish fare. To see the city’s more tranquil side, head to the Water of Leith walkway – a seven-minute stroll away – a traffic-free riverside path linking the beautiful Dean Village with Modern Art Galleries and beyond. If you wish to explore further afield, Haymarket Station is a stone’s throw away – from here you’ll be able to make a number of day trips around the country by rail.

Glowing Ember is something of an unexpected treat. The square outside is lovely, but even so, the flat itself is a surprise. There’s a sense of drama all around, much of which comes from the contrast between antiques and modern furniture, as well as the setting over two levels. The conservatory at the back stands out a bit, as the design is different, but while it’s a bit simpler, that’s exactly what you want in summer, when you can throw the doors open and lounge around in the sun.
