Let's answer the obvious question straight off the bat – what is that spaceship-looking thingy sitting just outside the home? Well, it's a garden pod in which you can relax and dine with a view of the Irish Sea, just in case the weather ever takes a turn for the worse. Of course, it's not always wet in Wales and if it's too nice to be cooped up inside, there's seating out on the decking, as well as an acre-size lawn.

All this and we haven't even got around the apartment itself, which is bright and inviting thanks to the large glass doors at the far end of the space and stark white walls. Both the bathroom and kitchen are pleasingly contemporary, although the more culinarily ambitious should note the absence of an oven. To top it all off, the host has a rather psychedelic taste in artwork, which adds a bit of character.

When the sun makes an appearance, you can be standing on the sands of Traeth Aberdaron in two minutes' walk from the front door. In the surrounding village, there's also direct access to the Wales Coastal Path so you can continue in either direction to see dramatic landscapes and a diverse collection of native wildlife.

It doesn't get much better than sliding open the doors each morning and sipping your coffee with a view like this. A contemporary studio apartment, it's set overlooking the seaside village of Aberdaron, on the very tip of the Llyn Peninsula. It's all on one floor and has been specifically designed to make the most of the views. This once humble barn has experienced quite a transformation of late. It's preserved the old (would you look at those vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework) and embraced the new with a king-sized four-poster bed, freestanding slipper bath, and stove burner, evoking rural romance. 

With wood stacked by the fireplace and a welcome hamper ladened with goodies, you may find you have no desire to venture out. But really you must. Follow the coastal path to the west and discover Porthoer (Whistling Sands) – a National Trust beach with a charming beach-side café where the sand really does whistle when the conditions are right. And just a smidge further, the beautiful seaside village of Aberdaron, at the tip of the Llyn Peninsula (three and a half miles away). With a thatched roofed tea room, seafront restaurants, obligatory fish and chips, and a glorious sandy beach, this place delivers all the Welsh charms you're chasing.

The cottage is less than a mile away from the Wales Coast Path, so you’re never too far from those stunning sea views. 

Pick up fish and chips on your way back to the cottage, and dine alfresco on the patio. From there you can admire the views, and let the kids run wild on the lawn. Later on, curl up in the living room and play games together. Your four-legged friend can stay here too, so nobody has to miss out.

Then voyage along the coastal paths of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or hop on a boat to Bardsey Island (from nearby Porth Meudwy) and spot the local puffins and their seal friends along the way.

Not only can it be found at the far end of the naturally isolated Llyn Peninsula, but the property itself lies in the middle of a working farm and is only accessible via a half-mile-long track off the main road.

This peaceful position is only made better by the gorgeous views of rolling fields and the Irish Sea stretching out to the distant horizon, which you can enjoy this coastal vista from one of the two patio areas. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, it's easy to get toasty inside, whether next to the wood-burning fireplace or in the freestanding bathtub.

We also have a lot of kind words for the design. Though the style might feel a little dated in parts, we love the space this offers large groups across the three cottages – each with a living area and kitchen. Each unit also has a private patio, but there's plenty of communal space where everyone can come together. The garden also makes for a great escape for taller guests feeling a little contained by the low bedroom ceilings.

Less than a fifteen-minute drive to Pwllheli, and ten to Abersoch, there are loads of great beaches, village pubs and local shops to explore nearby.
