You'll find everything you need for a relaxing coastal retreat in this charming house, be it board games and books or ping-pong and Prime. Newport is a pretty market town on the north coast of Pembrokeshire, situated at the foot of Carnigli Mountain and the Preseli Hills. There's an array of eateries, including small cafes and old-fashioned pubs, within walking distance, as well as independent shops and galleries. Newport Beach isn't far – about a half-hour stroll along the coastal path – while historic sites like Pentre Ifan, Castell Henllys Iron Age Village and Nevern Castle are less than ten minutes by car.

Given the lack of light pollution out here, stargazing through the skylight from the comfort of your bed is truly breathtaking. It was love at first sight when we clapped our eyes on this eco shepherd's hut, squirreled away in the sleepy village of Moylegrove along the North Pembrokeshire coastline.

With the mighty Pembrokeshire Coast National Park just a stone's throw away, this is a home to embrace the great outdoors and escape the outside world. Discover vast beaches and secluded, sandy coves just a fifteen-minute walk away. Embrace the sea with kayaking and dolphin-spotting boat trips. Or, for something a little more genteel, there are independent shops, galleries and fabulous restaurants just a short drive away in the nearby villages.

Back at home, we love the contemporary design aesthetic of this shepherd's hut, with copper and matt black accents letting the birch-clad interiors sing. A king-sized bed decked out in Egyptian cotton sheets and a rainfall shower room next door dial up the luxury. And the welcome hamper crammed with organic goodies (think fresh eggs straight from the host's hens and homemade bread) has everything you need to rustle up breakfast in the smart kitchenette. Although this Pembrokeshire apartment underwent a recent renovation, one thing that hasn't changed is just how peaceful the view from the balcony is, with the unmistakably blue waters of Carmarthen Bay peering through the trees. It may not be the biggest outdoor space in the world, but this seaward orientation makes up for it.

Inside, the glass doors in the main living area are especially generous when it comes to natural light and this dances pleasingly off the wooden floors and white walls. When it comes to the design, it's a pretty simple affair with only a few pieces of coastal artwork nodding to the location, but it's all been executed pretty well, particularly the sleek kitchen and bathroom.

A cabin in the woods reimagined, this home belongs in the centrefold of a magazine. Traditional wooden panelling adds a rustic feel to this home, but it's nicely contrasted with a stylish monochrome palette and huge floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a colourful sensory garden and pond. It's easy to spend an afternoon sitting on the south-facing deck, enjoying the peace of the Welsh countryside and keeping an eye out for the swallows, swifts, ducks and frogs living their lives on the water — even an otter has been spotted in the grounds by previous guests. After a stroll among the greenery, unwind with a glass of wine in front of the log burner or head up to the snug in the mezzanine with a well-thumbed book. Venturing out, two sandy beaches, Norman castles and a few quaint cafes await in the village of Llansteffan, which can be reached in eight minutes by car. Also close by is Green Castle Woods – about a five-minute drive – which is perfect for afternoon strolls through ancient woodlands. Or, ten minutes in the opposite direction lies Carmarthen, believed to be the oldest town in Wales – head there for places to eat, drink and shop aplenty.

It's here that you'll find your home, complete with its own pebbled courtyard and private ground floor entrance.

Set over two floors, the house has been modernised to create a comfortable, home from home feel. There's a pretty country-style kitchen and an open-plan living space which keeps everything sociable. Upstairs, two cosy bedrooms still show off a little of the building's original structure with wooden beams. Sit outside in the newly renovated courtyard on warm evenings or stroll out into the town to try out some of its excellent eateries. Perfect for exploring the Brecon Beacons, just a five-minute walk from Dinefwr Castle and a quarter of an hour from the station, it's a great spot. The village of Tresaith on the Ceredigion coastline is relatively humble, but you can find some truly spectacular homes here – this three-storey gem is among them.

It's definitely an address that has been constructed with the surrounding scenery in mind, with sea views to be admired from the balconies and out through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Even to the rear of the house that isn't so blessed with coastal vistas, there's a peaceful terrace surrounded by flower beds and it's more than possible to enjoy alfresco feasts in this space, thanks to the dining table, pizza oven and barbecue.

Should the weather ever be a little uninspiring, there's plenty to keep guests entertained inside. In the games room alone, you'll find tables for pool and table tennis, as well as a darts board and piano. Once you've exhausted these, the cinema room complete with leather seats and surround sound is the ideal place to watch a movie or some live sports. It's just as easy to escape to the Jacuzzi bathtub and treat yourself to an unrushed soak.

You'll eventually want to head to the seaside at some point and Tresaith Beach is less than ten minutes' away on foot. It's easy to arrange watersport activities here and – if you're lucky – spot dolphins. There's also a waterfall at the far end of the sand, as well.

From the water sports centre in Dale, you can try your hand at any number of activities, including sailing, surfing, and kayaking. Enjoy a spot of shopping in Haverfordwest – a lovely twenty-five minute walk, or five minutes by car if you’re in a hurry – and sit down to enjoy lunch at one of the local pubs. There’s also a town museum if you’re interested in learning of the county's roots. 

After a long day on your feet you can retreat to this little stone cottage where you’ll be met by a neutral colour palette that benefits from the skylights in the vaulted ceiling. Some of the original features, especially visible in the facade, remain from its days as a traditional stone barn.
