When Mary Ann Evans paid a visit to this home in 1857, she was inspired to write a novel. A year later, Scenes From A Clerical Life was published under the nom de plume George Eliot and over the course of the next twenty years, she would write some of the most influential books of the period, including Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda.

No pressure to anybody coming to this four-storey, Grade-II listed townhouse in the present day, then. Straight away, you can see why it had the power to rouse dormant literary ambitions — the view from the huge windows of Tenby Harbour is nothing short of sublime. Even though the interior has been updated in the proceeding two centuries, there are still signs of the home's heritage, from the high ceilings and tall windows to the original wooden floorboards in the hallway.

If you ever need a break from working on your manuscript, Castle Beach takes all of a minute to reach on foot, as does the 12th-century landmark that lends the sandy spot its name. Catching the twenty-minute ferry to see the abbey on Caldey Island is well worth doing, too.

Cook up your favourite dinners in the flash kitchenette – but not before you’ve sampled fish and chips from D.Fecci and Sons on lower Frog Street, some of the best in town. When the sun shines, make a beeline for the placid waters of Castle Beach and explore Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, the oldest of its kind in Wales. If you’d prefer to expend a little more energy, it’s an hour’s amble to Saundersfoot.

And with five beaches to tickle your fancy, you'll have plenty of options when it comes to sprawling in the sand. Our favourite is Castle Beach, a five-minute walk away.

Stroll to the sleepy seaside town's restaurants and boutique shops, or walk to Tenby North Beach in under ten minutes. The interiors are a little dated, but the home is well-kept, cosy and equipped with most of what you'll need for a comfortable stay – though you'll have to bring your own towels. Overlooking Tenby's South Beach, this apartment on the lower-ground floor of a handsome yellow building is ideal for those who want to be able to go from their front door to the seaside in a matter of seconds, rather than minutes.

Aside from this proximity to the sea, we found lots else to like about the home. The design is pared-back and sophisticated, with parquet floors, white walls and a selection of chic furnishings creating the relaxed ambience of a high-end hotel's lobby. The baby-blue kitchen is both super-sleek and big enough for cooking up hearty meals, while there's also a private courtyard outside just in case the weather's nice enough to dine alfresco.

If that's the case, there's plenty to see and do in this south Welsh idyll. Tenby Castle is only ten minutes' walk up the coast, as is the town's Museum and Art Gallery. This area by the North Beach is also where you can catch a ferry to Caldey Island, on which you can visit the monastery and spot some of the diverse wildlife.

Imagine starting every day with a barefoot walk on the soft sand of Tenby North Beach. Given that this home is only a short stroll away, why not take it a step further and find a spot just right for watching the sunrise on the horizon as waves lap the shore? 

If you prefer sleeping in, however – and let’s be honest, who wouldn’t, you’re on holiday after all – then start the day with a steaming cup of coffee on the balcony instead. The kitchen might be compact, but it has more than enough room for putting ham and cheese croissants together. Alternatively, head towards the heart of Tenby, only minutes away, for an array of cafes and restaurants. 

Modern and cheerful, the living room benefits from the ample light streaming through the balcony doors, making it a cosy spot for reading. Here, you can also come together for family movie nights or, after a takeaway fish and chips, you might clear the dining table for board games. 

Visit the vibrant harbour, take incredible photos of the Tenby Castle, and stroll Castle Beach after stopping off for ice cream.

Recently refurbished, this Grade II listed building is the whole package when it comes to tasteful decor, views, and a stunning location. Of course by location we mean there is plenty for you to do here – discover Tenby by visiting a handful of the independent shops all within walking distance. Browse wares, buy souvenirs, and treat yourself before heading to one of the surrounding cafes or restaurants for a late brunch. We can’t imagine a better place to go to really explore this beautiful Victorian coastal town, than the harbour. Colourful and charming, it’s a pleasure to simply pass through here, but why not stop and see if you can organise a boat trip? Further afield, you can paddleboard and sail, and if you’re keen to see some wildlife, Folly Farm is a fifteen-minute drive away, but well worth the trip for the adventure park that will certainly keep kids entertained for hours. 

When the weather plays ball, take advantage of the sunshine and organise a day trip to Caldey island where Cistercian Monks still live, or drive twenty-three-minutes to Pembrokeshire. And when the weather isn’t on your side? Well, that’s okay too, because then you’ll just be stuck inside this gorgeous home. For lunch, utilise the deep-blue kitchen and fry up some toasties for everyone to enjoy before playing a few rounds of UNO. In the evenings, gather outside at the picnic-style table for an alfresco dinner and stay there long after to watch the stars with the smell of the sea in your nose.
