Machynlleth is a melting pot of people and interests, making it a unique place to visit. So, what better accommodation for a trip to this quirky town than a medieval house? This home will whisk you back in time with its wooden beams, stone fireplaces and antique curiosities. Luckily the kitchen has had a 21st-century update, but the grand hall is still an imposing place to feast with your family. Culture vultures can wander the streets of Machynlleth, popping into antique shops and local galleries before pausing for a refreshment in one of the cosy pubs. Meanwhile outdoorsy types will be just as content venturing into Snowdonia National Park, where they can explore valleys and peaks on foot or by bike. And the sea is not far away either – a short drive will bring you to the turquoise waters of Aberdyfi Beach.

You're stepping back in time when you step inside this cottage in the ancient market town of Machynlleth. Centuries old, it's built from local stone and sits on a quiet side street in the centre of town – an easy walk from its restaurants, shops and cosy pubs.

What it lacks in outside space, it more than makes up for in character, with slate floors, a mix of old and new beams and an antique sideboard in the entrance hall. The layout has been turned upside-down to make the most of the vast, vaulted room above, so you'll find the bedrooms and bathroom on the ground floor here, and we particularly love the twin bedroom with its gigantic inglenook. 

Climbing the stairs, you come to the main living space – a sociable, open-plan room that takes up the whole top floor. Packed with beams, and with oak floors, it's a pretty special room, with a cosy seating area, dining table and modern kitchen. Not known for their large windows, this medieval gem has also had a skylight added to boost the natural light.

Surrounded by peaceful countryside, this barn conversion is cosy, comfortable and a pleasure to return to after long hikes through the Snowdonia National Park. Overlooking patchwork rolling hills, the private patio is an ideal spot for morning coffees and evening glasses of wine. Inside, colourful soft furnishings liven up the neutral colour scheme – we particularly loved the pops of orange in the living space. 

Try your hand at recreating classic Welsh dishes in the fully-equipped kitchen or jump in the car and take the short drive to Machynlleth for a bite to eat in one of the fantastic restaurants. Admire the exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art before taking the twenty-five-minute car ride to Aberdyfi, a pretty seaside village where the River Dyfi meets the clear waters of Cardigan Bay.

Hidden away among rolling farmland on the outskirts of Machynlleth, this converted eighteenth-century miner’s cottage helps get you closer to nature. A private garden offers plenty of play space for younger members of your party, while more active visitors will appreciate the many scenic walks in the surrounding area — many of which begin right at your front door. With Snowdonia National Park reachable in fifteen minutes' drive and the rugged coastline of Cardigan Bay taking about half an hour, this home presents itself as the ideal base from which to explore the varied attractions of Mid Wales. After a hard day of hiking or swimming in the sea, return to the oak-beamed living room and warm yourself in front of the inviting inglenook fireplace — complete with its original bread oven — before retiring to one of the three bedrooms, complete with extra blankets for those cooler nights.

It might be a traditional cottage, but the kitchen is sleek, contemporary, and big enough for everyone to pitch in to help prepare meals. Or, pack up a beach bag and head to the vast shores of Tywyn for a wander along its five miles of sandy beaches backed by a promenade and dunes. This home can optionally be split into two: each half has two or three bedrooms apiece, a kitchen and a living and dining areas. We think it works well for two independent families travelling together. The prime attraction here is if course getting out into the great outdoors. There's hiking, cycling, pony riding, golfing and bird-watching to pick from (the RSBP Ynys-hir national reserve is close by). The vibrant market town of Machynlleth – home to antique stores, bookshops, art galleries and Wales’ original 15th century parliament (now a museum) – is also just a short drive away. On your return, warm up beside the log burner or pop open the bubbly and fire up the barbecue for an alfresco meal overlooking the Cambrian Mountains.

Characterful and cosy, this charming coastal retreat is mere steps away from Aberdyfi Beach. The crashing waves are so close you can almost touch them from the living area – in fact, you can sit at the dining table and see the beach out the big windows. It's the perfect spot to savour a glass of wine and people-watch, but with the art galleries, restaurants and the sea on your doorstep, you'll surely be tempted out. On rainy days, curl up with a book on the squishy sofas, play a board game or two, or just snooze the afternoon away in the two comfortable bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up delicious dinners, and there are plenty of shops nearby to stock up on ingredients and fresh seafood. Aberdovey is a small seaside village on the harbour, but there's plenty nearby to keep you entertained – be it crabbing on the jetty, sea rowing at the rowing club or nibbling on fish and chips at a beachside picnic. But for more action-packed adventures, hike the picturesque Wales Coast Path or roam the nature reserves in Snowdonia National Park – the ancient woodland in Ceunant Llennyrch National Nature Reserve is an hour's drive.

The exposed stone exterior exudes rural charm, and are plenty more enchanting features to admire inside. You'll love the antique Welsh dresser, the ancient oak beams, and the inglenook fireplace. Light up the wood burner and get cosy on the sofa to watch your favourite movies on chilly evenings. And, when the sun is shining, you can head outside to the garden and admire the gorgeous views over a craft gin and tonic – perfection. 

The pretty town of Dolgellau is conveniently just two miles away, where you can pick up supplies and enjoy a pint in one of the local pubs. Thrill-seeking cyclists will be delighted that there is world-class mountain biking around ten miles away. And, hikers can lace up their boots to hike up rugged Cadair Idris, or join the Mawddach Trail for a more leisurely walk.

In the summer months, sit out in the sprawling, enclosed garden with a cool drink, or enjoy dining al fresco at the picnic table. On chillier nights, you can snuggle up around the fireplace with a good book or challenge family members to a board game under the wooden beamed ceilings. Fancy a stroll through the countryside? There are plenty of walks leading right from your doorstep. If you need some supplies then the market town of Dolgellau is just a mile away – visit the boutiques, cafés and traditional inns on foot. For a blast of sea air, Abermaw Beach in Barmouth, less than a twenty-five-minute drive from home, has golden sands which are perfect for basking or swimming. And let’s not forget the thrill seekers – the popular peak of Cader Idris is under a half-hour drive away, as well as the largest mountain bike trail centre in the UK – Coed y Brenin. Lovely indoors or the great outdoors, this one has you covered. 

Sights Of Snowdonia

There were plenty of reasons why this penthouse apartment made it into our collection, but let's start with the most obvious. When guests step out onto the ornate white balcony, they're greeted with stunning views over the Dyfi Estuary and Cardigan Bay, stretching all the way down the Ceredigion Coastline. As is often the case with coastal locations, there's just so much sky and this uninterrupted panorama brings the added benefit of meaning the interior is flooded with natural light through the windows and skylights. This is emphasised pleasingly by the stark white walls and it makes for a wonderfully bright space to sprawl out on the tan leather sofa. As you can probably tell from looking out the window, Aberdyfi Beach sits just across the street and there are cafes and pubs along the seafront for when you fancy a refreshment. Slightly further afield, there are opportunities for birdwatching in RSPB Ynys-hir and Dyfi Osprey Project, both taking around half an hour to reach in the car.

Quiet and secluded, but just a fifteen-minute walk from popular Corris, this lovely lodge has been completely refurbished to create a comfortable rural home. The owners, James and Sophie, live up at the main house and they've put a great deal of care into it. Heated with a ground source heat pump, laid out using the rules of Feng Shui and designed to be as cosy and welcoming as possible, this place will appeal to keen cyclists, walkers and those of us who just want to escape for a bit. Surrounded by pine forest, with a river running opposite, it's in the Dyfi Valley, with the Dyfi bike park just a ten-minute drive. A traditional slate building, the inside is modern and practical. Cosy up on the sofas in front of the fire (a basket of logs is provided), cook in the smart kitchen and eat at the contemporary dining table – it's all one sociable space. There's a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, with two more upstairs with sloping ceilings and skylights. In the summer, step out onto your patio with a cup of coffee each morning and just listen to the birds. A short walk away there's a public park – perfect for dog walks – and you can stroll into town to the cafe and pub.

This pretty home can be found beside the River Wnion in the small market town of Dolgellau, right at the heart of Snowdonia. It’s a wonderful base for exploring the national park, but staying home is just as much of a treat here. You can enjoy riverside views from the garden, where you’ll have a hot tub to relax in, in addition to a barbecue. Inside, the mill conversion boasts a wood-burning stove and a games room that’s ideal for older children. Little ones will need to be supervised on the spiral staircase.

Situated on a working farm in the rolling hills of Mid Wales, this homespun hideaway is the perfect place for slowing down and switching off. The traditional interiors feel familiar and comforting – we loved the floral carpet, inglenook fireplace and antique furnishings. Spend mornings curled up on a plump leather armchair with a good book before preparing a full Welsh breakfast in the rustic kitchen.

Right in the heart of Dolgellau, this home makes for an excellent base for exploring the nearby mountains, villages, forest and coastline. If you want to get out and see the Great Outdoors, this is a marvellous choice indeed. You can walk nine miles from your front door along an old railway line to reach Barmouth and its pretty beach, where you’ll tuck into fish and chips and breathe in the sea air. The walking route to Cader Idris in Southern Snowdonia is just fifteen minutes away, ideal for experienced hikers. Mountain bikers can head to Coes-y-Brenin Forest Park to let off steam. For a gentler excursion, you might stroll to the local shops, to a cafe for lunch, or to a pub for a post-hike pint. 

After a day spent outdoors, you couldn’t ask for a more warm or welcoming home to return to. Rest your weary feet in front of the log burner in the inglenook fireplace, or curl up in the reading nook with a book and a cuppa. The lounge boasts vaulted ceilings and tall windows and is a lovely place to gather together. Play board games or get competitive playing table football. On arrival, a welcome pack of tea, coffee and local treats awaits in the country-style kitchen. Outside the view takes centre stage, with the green fields giving way to rugged peaks. Savour that panorama with a drink at the picnic area. Hikers and walkers will be glad to know that Snowdonia’s epic landscapes are on your doorstep, as you’re in the south of the sprawling National Park. There are trails suitable for seasoned pros and newbies alike. The golden beach of Abermaw in Barmouth is also close by (a twenty-minute drive) for those fancying some sea air. When you’re craving sustenance, stroll into nearby Dolgellau (less than 2 miles away) for some drinks and tasty pub grub.

Under the Mountain

The majestic mountain views of Cadair Idris took our breath away when we visited this secluded home. Clad in Virginia creeper that turns a stunning fiery red in the autumn, this cottage, surrounded by farmland, is as pretty as a picture. It’s a paradise for bird watchers with an array of wildlife, or if you’re a fan of planes, you can enjoy watching them from the garden as the valley is a training area for aircraft. 

When night falls do a spot of star gazing here, the dark skies reveal a multitude of sparkling jewels. The incredible vistas can be enjoyed from inside too, or gather around the wood burner in the inglenook fireplace when the weather turns chilly. 

Out and about, explore Snowdonia National Park, including Dolgellau, a fifteen-minute drive. Or, for a day by the coast, head to Tywyn on Cardigan Bay, around thirty minutes in the car.

Swap the noise of daily humdrum with the soft sounds of a babbling brook and birdsong at this Welsh gem of a home, set high in the Mid Wales hillsides overlooking a river and woodlands fringing Cwmllinau village.

From way up here in this restful nook of the world, you could feel a million miles from anywhere – which is just how we like things. But if you fancy spreading your wings, you’re central to Snowdonia National Park and Cardigan Bay for inspiring days out, as well as the postcard-pretty market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau for all the Welsh charm you’re chasing. Ground yourself in the extraordinary landscapes of Snowdonia at this secluded cottage idyll set at the foot of Cadair Iris mountain on a farmland estate. 

Spend your days voyaging through the glorious grounds – there’s fishing on the lakes and riverside walks on your doorstep. And, of course, there’s the footpaths leading to the mighty Cadair Iris, the highest mountain in Southern Snowdonia. Don your hiking boots to discover its glacial lakes and lofty viewpoints alive in folklore tales of giants, dragons, and heroes.

When it’s time to drop back down to earth and meet the locals, the neighbouring village of Dorgellau (a six-minute drive away) is a fine place to start with its local inns for hearty grub and a warm welcome.

Spend sunny afternoons in the beer garden of the Pengwern pub, just a minute’s walk up the road, or jump in the car and take the ten-minute drive to the trout-filled Llyn Trawsfynydd. Snuggled at the southern point of Snowdonia National Park in Sarnau, this quaint abode is made for rural exploration. If you don't fancy the challenging terrains of Snowdon, there are various walking and cycling trails close by to the cottage.

One of the funkiest former grain stores we ever did see, this little home is part of a farm in the countryside just outside Pwllheli. Lovingly converted with a great deal of flair and imagination, it's far from your usual holiday home. Upcycled furniture, industrial pieces and pops of colour mix with natural wood, leather and slate. The ground floor living space is cosy and quirky, with a log burner, beamed ceilings and an open staircase. Cook up family meals in the fully kitted-out kitchen and choose to eat indoors or out in the private garden. There's so much to love about this place, but we particularly like the wet room, with its rain shower, light tunnel and penguins hiding in the built-in shelves, and the pretty garden with its fun seating areas. With the owners just next door, make use of the gym, make friends with the farm animals and cook on the fire pit in the evenings. It's just a ten-minute drive into the town, with loads more to see and do nearby, from walking and horse riding to playing on the sandy beaches.

Home chefs can let loose in the kitchen, rustling up freshly-baked cakes and mouthwatering Sunday roasts to share around the eight-seater table.
