To explore Crete’s history and sights, why not visit Chania, which can be reached in forty-five minutes by car, or Rethimno – a thirty-five-minute drive away – with its 1830s lighthouse and Venetian harbour, lined with fishing boats and great tavernas for local, traditional meals? But when you're in the mood to pick up the pace, you're just a short drive away from picturesque beaches – the closest is Paralia Kalives, about twenty minutes away. Tzitzifes is a small village, so while you won't find heaps on your doorstep, this region is right at the foot of the White Mountains and has excellent hiking trails. Plus, your host can arrange air taxi services, bike rentals, yacht charters and sightseeing tours to make your trip extra special.

Located in Vryses, Crete, this home was named one of Europe's 50 Best Villas by The Sunday Times. Set among rolling hills teeming with olive and cypress trees, its simple stone exterior makes way for a modern, comfortable interior with plenty of traditional charm. Exposed beams, an open fireplace and an earthy palette create a warm welcome in the living room while the master bedroom with its canopy bed and the green-accented second bedroom with its decorative alcoves feel rustic and indulgent in equal measure. We would be remiss not to mention the bathroom too, with its rainfall shower, cosmic stip lighting and spa-like serenity. The villa is built from stone and decorated in a traditional style. Best of all, it’s in a huge plot of land with no neighbours – it’s an absolute haven of peace, quiet and relaxation. When you wake up in the morning your toughest decision will be which balcony to drink your coffee on, or possibly whether to sunbathe on a sun lounger or in a hammock. Will the children tire themselves out in the wheelchair-accessible heated pool, the playground, or playing football on the mini footy field? 

A lovely traditional stone kitchen makes cooking a breeze, but you might like to arrange for a private chef to cook for you anyway. Enjoy beautifully prepared Cretan dishes outside at the covered dining table – gluten-free meals can be provided on request. There’s also a fabulous barbecue area, so your chef could whip up a grilled feast while you and your guests sip cocktails on the terrace and admire the colourful sunsets. 

You have everything you need right at your fingertips here, but if you do fancy exploring Crete, you’re in a great location for it. Almyrida beach is just ten minutes away by car, while the attractive old town of Chania is thirty-seven minutes away. Meander along the winding streets with an ice cream, or find an alfresco table at a charming taverna by the port. When you return to the villa, settle into the Jacuzzi for a soak and see which constellations you can spot in the twinkling night sky.

Whilst the fishing village is quiet, its offers an array of cafes, shops and restaurants, all within walking distance. Featuring two private pools, one of which is designed especially for kids, you can rest assured that the little ones will always be kept entertained. The garden is particularly impressive thanks to a hot tub, lush lawn and Jacuzzi, but the inside of the home has its fair share of little luxuries, too. We love the basement here, where you’ll find a plush home cinema and a pool table.

Architecturally designed and boasting scenic views, this stylish villa is perfect for a group of six. It's spread across three levels, so space won't be an issue, though we reckon all your time will be spent in the outdoors. Sun-kissed terraces are perfect for alfresco dining and evening cocktails, while the swimming pool helps keep things cool during the height of summer. If you fancy eating out, the tavernas of Kera are less than a ten-minute drive away. Ready to hit the beach? Almyrida is a short drive away. Or, venture further afield to Chania's Old Town, forty minutes by car.

A thoroughly down-to-earth home positioned a twenty-minute drive from Kalami Beach, this charming villa is rustic and relaxing. You’ll feel instantly at ease in the living space – we loved the dark wood, timber beams, antique furnishings and yellow-painted stucco walls. 

Spend mornings slow and steady with a coffee at the dining table before slipping on your flip flops and exploring the grounds. There’s a pool for keeping cool on hot afternoons and a fitness room for keeping active between sunbathing sessions.  

Pick up local cheese and wine from the quaint on-site shop and enjoy on the shaded terrace. Head to the rooftop for sweeping views of the Cretan Sea – though should you fancy a closer look, take the nineteen-minute car ride to Kalyves and watch the tide ebb and flow from the shoreline. Return home in the evening for a serious pampering session in the steam room and a blissful night’s sleep beneath your bed’s airy canopy.

This villa sits just inland from Crete’s beach-fringed north coast, a short drive from the buzzing city of Chania. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the secluded Omprogialos Beach, or drift a little further afield (a twenty-minute drive) to Koutalas Beach. Chania is a forty-minute drive, which is ideal if you’re flying in to Chania Airport.

The villa itself sits in glorious isolation, with nothing but the swish of olive trees and cheep of birds to fill your days. Sitting in turquoise splendour against the rust-red landscape, the swimming pool is crying out for a dip in the heat of the day. Settle on a sunlounger, or head to te bubbling hot tub for a soak. There’s shaded dining on the terrace and a built-in stone barbecue, but our favourite spot has to be the secluded sofa terrace, swathed with white curtains for a private moment.

A haven of modernity awaits inside, where bright white walls keep things cool and breezy. Should the temperature dip, there’s a stove in the living room to keep warm. A dedicated wine fridge ensures your pinot grigio stays cool and crisp. Bedrooms open up to private balconies, or have doors onto the terrace, so you can awake every morning to glorious sunshine streaming through glass doors.

Fancy a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean sea each morning? Follow the short 10-metre private path, and from here, you'll have direct access to its crystal waters. Those who prefer to spend their days in a more luxurious setting stay by the sparkling swimming pool equipped with its own sunken bar and lounge area to enjoy instead.

Lounge out on the day beds to soak up the sunshine, or head up to the viewing platform for not only the best panoramic views in the house looking over the glimmering bay but – a scenic spot to work on your fitness routine (as there's gym equipment installed for prime viewing time). 

For the competitive type, why not play a game of petanque in the garden before firing up the wood-burning pizza oven for an evening spent in good company? 

As you transition into the house, natural stone floors flowing from indoor and outdoor living spaces create a social setting, whether you prefer to be out in the sun or amidst the cool and shaded interior. Get comfortable on the cosy couches and admire the art installations that inject style and sophistication into the contemporary setting.

With the quaint village of Plaka just a two-minute drive away and the nearest sandy beach reachable in five minutes – this place boasts both comfort practicality. Oh, and we can't reiterate enough those magical, swoon-worthy views.

With stunning views over Almyrida beach and the mountain plateau, this Crete villa is perfectly appointed for gazing out to sea while taking time to slow right down and unwind. Sitting atop a hill, you'll have direct access down to the beach, with an endless stretch of water that can be seen from the balcony and poolside terrace. Sit down for a Greek lunch of stuffed vine leaves, olives, hummus and pita under the large veranda. 

Open the sliding doors for seamless modern living. We love how the living space is wonderfully bright and open, while the homey decor makes the bedrooms feel cosy and inviting. Rustle up your favourite dishes in the sleek island kitchen, as you look out across the turquoise horizon. The views are spectacular from just about every angle and beckon for sunset drinks later on. 

Spend sun-soaked days relaxing on the loungers and swimming in the pool, or get out and explore this historical area. Make your way down to Almyrida for excellent seafood restaurants and traditional Greek tavernas, right on your doorstep. Alternatively, visit the charming neighbouring villages, such as Gavalohori, and taste the local cuisine in a quiet, authentic setting, before returning home for a tipple of Riki on the terrace.

Nestled in the village of Maheri, deep in the Cretean countryside, you'll find this charming home. Built using stone and wood, it fits into its surroundings perfectly and offers a wonderful escape from everyday life for families or small groups of friends. 

From the ceiling beams to the arches leading you from the living space to the dining room, there are plenty of traditional touches to admire inside. Cool and calm, it's the ideal place to kick back and relax between adventures – however, we think you'll want to spend most of your time outside soaking up the Greek sunshine. Head up to the roof terrace to drink in the epic views across the countryside – stretch out on a lounger to catch some rays, or slip into the hot tub as twilight falls. 

The surrounding village has a couple of points of interest just a few minutes away from your front door. At one end you will find the white chapel of St John, perched on a rock, and at the other, there is a stone amphitheatre – if you visit at the right time, you might even have the opportunity to watch a play. And, should you fancy a day at the beach, the sands of Kalyves are just a 5km drive away, where you can swim in the glittering crystal clear waters.
