Located in Vryses, Crete, this home was named one of Europe's 50 Best Villas by The Sunday Times. Set among rolling hills teeming with olive and cypress trees, its simple stone exterior makes way for a modern, comfortable interior with plenty of traditional charm. Exposed beams, an open fireplace and an earthy palette create a warm welcome in the living room while the master bedroom with its canopy bed and the green-accented second bedroom with its decorative alcoves feel rustic and indulgent in equal measure. We would be remiss not to mention the bathroom too, with its rainfall shower, cosmic stip lighting and spa-like serenity. Outside, a picturesque private pool framed by sofas, sun-loungers and a ping-pong table invites plenty of fun and relaxation, while the Cretan oven and barbecue provide the makings for an elaborate al fresco feast beneath the pergola. Sometimes on holiday, you don’t want to have to plan or follow an itinerary – you just want to chill out and have everything you need to hand. This is the perfect place for that. This gorgeous villa in Crete has everything you could wish for, and some things you’ve probably not yet thought of. 

The villa is built from stone and decorated in a traditional style. Best of all, it’s in a huge plot of land with no neighbours – it’s an absolute haven of peace, quiet and relaxation. When you wake up in the morning your toughest decision will be which balcony to drink your coffee on, or possibly whether to sunbathe on a sun lounger or in a hammock. Will the children tire themselves out in the wheelchair-accessible heated pool, the playground, or playing football on the mini footy field? 

A lovely traditional stone kitchen makes cooking a breeze, but you might like to arrange for a private chef to cook for you anyway. Enjoy beautifully prepared Cretan dishes outside at the covered dining table – gluten-free meals can be provided on request. There’s also a fabulous barbecue area, so your chef could whip up a grilled feast while you and your guests sip cocktails on the terrace and admire the colourful sunsets. 

You have everything you need right at your fingertips here, but if you do fancy exploring Crete, you’re in a great location for it. Almyrida beach is just ten minutes away by car, while the attractive old town of Chania is thirty-seven minutes away. Meander along the winding streets with an ice cream, or find an alfresco table at a charming taverna by the port. When you return to the villa, settle into the Jacuzzi for a soak and see which constellations you can spot in the twinkling night sky.

Nestled in the village of Maheri, deep in the Cretean countryside, you'll find this charming home. Built using stone and wood, it fits into its surroundings perfectly and offers a wonderful escape from everyday life for families or small groups of friends. 

From the ceiling beams to the arches leading you from the living space to the dining room, there are plenty of traditional touches to admire inside. Cool and calm, it's the ideal place to kick back and relax between adventures – however, we think you'll want to spend most of your time outside soaking up the Greek sunshine. Head up to the roof terrace to drink in the epic views across the countryside – stretch out on a lounger to catch some rays, or slip into the hot tub as twilight falls. 

The surrounding village has a couple of points of interest just a few minutes away from your front door. At one end you will find the white chapel of St John, perched on a rock, and at the other, there is a stone amphitheatre – if you visit at the right time, you might even have the opportunity to watch a play. And, should you fancy a day at the beach, the sands of Kalyves are just a 5km drive away, where you can swim in the glittering crystal clear waters.

If you fancy eating out, the tavernas of Kera are less than a ten-minute drive away. Ready to hit the beach? Almyrida is a short drive away. Or, venture further afield to Chania's Old Town, forty minutes by car.

Nestled away in the Cretan countryside and overlooked by the island's famous White Mountains, this stone villa brings contemporary amenities and stylish design to a rustic spot on the map.

The villa itself looks fairly traditional from the outside, having been constructed from stone and wood. However, step behind the front door and you'll find modern living quarters dominated by natural light, rich wood finishes and sleek tiling. The double-height living room is particularly chic, but we're also especially fond of the Jacuzzi bathtub in one of the en-suites.

This being Crete, you'll most likely want to pass as much time outdoors as possible and there are plenty of ways to do just that here. The swimming pool in the middle of the grounds is sure to be a firm favourite on hot afternoons, while the surrounding loungers bring some resort-level relaxation. You can find some a few peaceful spots out in the garden, but none are as tranquil as the hammock hidden away underneath apricot trees.

Although the local village feels wonderfully isolated, there's a restaurant and shop only 400 metres away. Almyrida's sandy beach is only a 6km drive away when you're craving a dip in the sea, while the city of Chania is only 24km to the west as well.

Nestled in an inland village just a short drive from the beautiful Kalives beach and the ancient archaeological site of Aptera, this traditional stone villa offers a sense of unique charm with a splash of modern comfort. The home centres around the elegant courtyard with its pool patio, loungers, and covered sun bed allowing guests to make the most of the Mediterranean sunshine, though it’s worth noting these are partially overlooked by a neighbouring home. Inside, we find the mix of exposed timber and stone, and the fireplace and lambskin throws provide a truly local ambience while offering ample space and comfort for a family or small group of friends.

Those who prefer to spend their days in a more luxurious setting stay by the sparkling swimming pool equipped with its own sunken bar and lounge area to enjoy instead.

Lounge out on the day beds to soak up the sunshine, or head up to the viewing platform for not only the best panoramic views in the house looking over the glimmering bay but – a scenic spot to work on your fitness routine (as there's gym equipment installed for prime viewing time). 

For the competitive type, why not play a game of petanque in the garden before firing up the wood-burning pizza oven for an evening spent in good company? 

As you transition into the house, natural stone floors flowing from indoor and outdoor living spaces create a social setting, whether you prefer to be out in the sun or amidst the cool and shaded interior. Get comfortable on the cosy couches and admire the art installations that inject style and sophistication into the contemporary setting.

With the quaint village of Plaka just a two-minute drive away and the nearest sandy beach reachable in five minutes – this place boasts both comfort practicality. Oh, and we can't reiterate enough those magical, swoon-worthy views.

Modern and chic, this home in the north-west of Crete offers a fabulous escape for groups of up to six. Recently built on the hillside below the village of Megala Chorafia, it's the perfect place to press pause and indulge in some serious relaxation. 

The large windows in the living room mean that you can savour the scenery while you sip your morning tea – and you’ll be eager to spend the rest of the day outside in the fresh air. With a terrace overlooking Souda Bay, you have a front-row view of the water – when the sun comes out, keep cool with regular dips in the infinity pool. Dry off while you read a book and gaze out to sea, and we’re willing to bet that nothing is more peaceful than an afternoon nap on a sun lounger. Meals under the pergola and sunset cocktails are just the icing on the cake.

Kalami Beach, with its sandy shoreline, is a pretty spot less than ten minutes away by car where you can paddle and catch some rays. Megala Chorafia is just a ten-minute walk away, where you can stock up on supplies at the mini-market or dine at one of the three tavernas. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive to the ancient port city of Chania in just twenty minutes to explore the Venetian Harbour and winding streets.

A thoroughly down-to-earth home positioned a twenty-minute drive from Kalami Beach, this charming villa is rustic and relaxing. You’ll feel instantly at ease in the living space – we loved the dark wood, timber beams, antique furnishings and yellow-painted stucco walls. 

Spend mornings slow and steady with a coffee at the dining table before slipping on your flip flops and exploring the grounds. There’s a pool for keeping cool on hot afternoons and a fitness room for keeping active between sunbathing sessions.  

Pick up local cheese and wine from the quaint on-site shop and enjoy on the shaded terrace. Head to the rooftop for sweeping views of the Cretan Sea – though should you fancy a closer look, take the nineteen-minute car ride to Kalyves and watch the tide ebb and flow from the shoreline. Return home in the evening for a serious pampering session in the steam room and a blissful night’s sleep beneath your bed’s airy canopy.

Sleek and serene, this villa offers excellent views and lots of space for relaxing. Kids will love the heated swimming pool, and the outdoor kitchen is well-equipped for family meals, with plenty of seating in the shade. Downstairs, you'll find a private spa and gym, along with a cinema room and four en-suite bedrooms. The sprawling main suite is on the entrance floor, with an in-room bathtub by the window to enjoy stunning panoramas while you soak. Parking is also provided – we think you'll want a car here to get to the nearest beaches and explore the surrounding beauty of Crete.

This villa sits just inland from Crete’s beach-fringed north coast, a short drive from the buzzing city of Chania. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the secluded Omprogialos Beach, or drift a little further afield (a twenty-minute drive) to Koutalas Beach. Chania is a forty-minute drive, which is ideal if you’re flying in to Chania Airport.

The villa itself sits in glorious isolation, with nothing but the swish of olive trees and cheep of birds to fill your days. Sitting in turquoise splendour against the rust-red landscape, the swimming pool is crying out for a dip in the heat of the day. Settle on a sunlounger, or head to te bubbling hot tub for a soak. There’s shaded dining on the terrace and a built-in stone barbecue, but our favourite spot has to be the secluded sofa terrace, swathed with white curtains for a private moment.

A haven of modernity awaits inside, where bright white walls keep things cool and breezy. Should the temperature dip, there’s a stove in the living room to keep warm. A dedicated wine fridge ensures your pinot grigio stays cool and crisp. Bedrooms open up to private balconies, or have doors onto the terrace, so you can awake every morning to glorious sunshine streaming through glass doors.

Located in Almyrida, this villa is just 500 metres from a long stretch of sandy beach. Whilst the fishing village is quiet, its offers an array of cafes, shops and restaurants, all within walking distance. Featuring two private pools, one of which is designed especially for kids, you can rest assured that the little ones will always be kept entertained. The garden is particularly impressive thanks to a hot tub, lush lawn and Jacuzzi, but the inside of the home has its fair share of little luxuries, too. We love the basement here, where you’ll find a plush home cinema and a pool table. 

Sweet Sea

From the private infinity pool to the open-plan living area, this villa puts its showstopping Aegean vistas front and centre. Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows flood each room with natural light and show off the scenery. Even the bedrooms have a glimpse of the blue horizon. Of course, the terrace is the best spot to take advantage of the views, with its array of lounge chairs perfect for sunbathing and a covered terrace ideal for sunset dinners. If you can tear yourself away, the nearest beach is just 700 metres away. You're also not far from Plaka and Almyrida – about a five-minute drive – while Chania makes a good option for a day trip.

Well, you won’t be woken by the noise of honking horns here. Drop the tempo and take in the rolling hills that surround you. We love the original vaulted architecture, but all the mod-cons are in place too. Original doesn’t equal shambolic in our book. The most taxing choice of the day will be which lounger to go for. And when you tire of alfresco meals in the dappled gardens, the local tavernas do a great souvlaki we’ve heard (brave among you will take a hillside hike lasting about 30 minutes), but even driving here is a treat given it’s so picture-worthy.
