Plus, if that still hasn’t tired the children out, beach days can be reached in just fourteen minutes by car. 

To explore Crete’s history and sights, why not visit Chania, which can be reached in forty-five minutes by car, or Rethimno – a thirty-five-minute drive away – with its 1830s lighthouse and Venetian harbour, lined with fishing boats and great tavernas for local, traditional meals? Or, you could even explore the seas and book a boat trip. 

End your day with a dinner eaten alfresco. Then, when the little ones are all in bed, sip a refreshing glass of wine as you admire the views this home offers.

Nestled in an inland village just a short drive from the beautiful Kalives beach and the ancient archaeological site of Aptera, this traditional stone villa offers a sense of unique charm with a splash of modern comfort. The home centres around the elegant courtyard with its pool patio, loungers, and covered sun bed allowing guests to make the most of the Mediterranean sunshine, though it’s worth noting these are partially overlooked by a neighbouring home. Inside, we find the mix of exposed timber and stone, and the fireplace and lambskin throws provide a truly local ambience while offering ample space and comfort for a family or small group of friends.

Nestled in the village of Maheri, deep in the Cretean countryside, you'll find this charming home. Built using stone and wood, it fits into its surroundings perfectly and offers a wonderful escape from everyday life for families or small groups of friends. 

From the ceiling beams to the arches leading you from the living space to the dining room, there are plenty of traditional touches to admire inside. Cool and calm, it's the ideal place to kick back and relax between adventures – however, we think you'll want to spend most of your time outside soaking up the Greek sunshine. Head up to the roof terrace to drink in the epic views across the countryside – stretch out on a lounger to catch some rays, or slip into the hot tub as twilight falls. 

The surrounding village has a couple of points of interest just a few minutes away from your front door. At one end you will find the white chapel of St John, perched on a rock, and at the other, there is a stone amphitheatre – if you visit at the right time, you might even have the opportunity to watch a play. And, should you fancy a day at the beach, the sands of Kalyves are just a 5km drive away, where you can swim in the glittering crystal clear waters.

Perched on the banks of Lake Kournas, this home has some of the most beautiful lake views, and when you’re out on the terrace at just the right angle, it might even give you the impression of floating right above the deep blue body of water.

Given all the outdoor space has to offer – there’s also views of the Chania mountains – we won’t blame you if you spend entire days poolside, only ever moving to top up your drink or apply another layer of sunscreen. With a table set up right on the terrace, you can even dine alfresco – we recommend meze platters of salty olives and feta cheese alongside a refreshing beer. 

After lazy mornings spent chatting and drinking coffee in the light living space, you can venture down to the lake to rent a paddleboat. Spend sunny afternoons on the shimmering water as the breeze rustles the leaves and when you’re done, head up to the local taverna for a bite to eat. 

Kalyvaki is a short drive away if spending sun-drenched days on a stretch of sandy beach sounds like your cup of tea, but exploring Crete’s beauty can also take you towards the waterfall, Quellen von Argiroupoli. Explore the island, eat, drink, and relax, and if nothing else, enjoy the sense of peace that goes along with staring out over a lake.

Nestled away in the Cretan countryside and overlooked by the island's famous White Mountains, this stone villa brings contemporary amenities and stylish design to a rustic spot on the map.

The villa itself looks fairly traditional from the outside, having been constructed from stone and wood. However, step behind the front door and you'll find modern living quarters dominated by natural light, rich wood finishes and sleek tiling. The double-height living room is particularly chic, but we're also especially fond of the Jacuzzi bathtub in one of the en-suites.

This being Crete, you'll most likely want to pass as much time outdoors as possible and there are plenty of ways to do just that here. The swimming pool in the middle of the grounds is sure to be a firm favourite on hot afternoons, while the surrounding loungers bring some resort-level relaxation. You can find some a few peaceful spots out in the garden, but none are as tranquil as the hammock hidden away underneath apricot trees.

Although the local village feels wonderfully isolated, there's a restaurant and shop only 400 metres away. Almyrida's sandy beach is only a 6km drive away when you're craving a dip in the sea, while the city of Chania is only 24km to the west as well.

Modern and chic, this home in the north-west of Crete offers a fabulous escape for groups of up to six. Recently built on the hillside below the village of Megala Chorafia, it's the perfect place to press pause and indulge in some serious relaxation. 

The large windows in the living room mean that you can savour the scenery while you sip your morning tea – and you’ll be eager to spend the rest of the day outside in the fresh air. With a terrace overlooking Souda Bay, you have a front-row view of the water – when the sun comes out, keep cool with regular dips in the infinity pool. Dry off while you read a book and gaze out to sea, and we’re willing to bet that nothing is more peaceful than an afternoon nap on a sun lounger. Meals under the pergola and sunset cocktails are just the icing on the cake.

Kalami Beach, with its sandy shoreline, is a pretty spot less than ten minutes away by car where you can paddle and catch some rays. Megala Chorafia is just a ten-minute walk away, where you can stock up on supplies at the mini-market or dine at one of the three tavernas. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive to the ancient port city of Chania in just twenty minutes to explore the Venetian Harbour and winding streets.

Located in Almyrida, this villa is just 500 metres from a long stretch of sandy beach. Whilst the fishing village is quiet, its offers an array of cafes, shops and restaurants, all within walking distance. Featuring two private pools, one of which is designed especially for kids, you can rest assured that the little ones will always be kept entertained. The garden is particularly impressive thanks to a hot tub, lush lawn and Jacuzzi, but the inside of the home has its fair share of little luxuries, too. We love the basement here, where you’ll find a plush home cinema and a pool table.

A thoroughly down-to-earth home positioned a twenty-minute drive from Kalami Beach, this charming villa is rustic and relaxing. You’ll feel instantly at ease in the living space – we loved the dark wood, timber beams, antique furnishings and yellow-painted stucco walls. 

Spend mornings slow and steady with a coffee at the dining table before slipping on your flip flops and exploring the grounds. There’s a pool for keeping cool on hot afternoons and a fitness room for keeping active between sunbathing sessions.  

Pick up local cheese and wine from the quaint on-site shop and enjoy on the shaded terrace. Head to the rooftop for sweeping views of the Cretan Sea – though should you fancy a closer look, take the nineteen-minute car ride to Kalyves and watch the tide ebb and flow from the shoreline. Return home in the evening for a serious pampering session in the steam room and a blissful night’s sleep beneath your bed’s airy canopy.

While this villa’s beauty speaks for itself, we can’t help but boast about its fab features and accolades. Located in Vryses, Crete, this home was named one of Europe's 50 Best Villas by The Sunday Times. Set among rolling hills teeming with olive and cypress trees, its simple stone exterior makes way for a modern, comfortable interior with plenty of traditional charm. Exposed beams, an open fireplace and an earthy palette create a warm welcome in the living room while the master bedroom with its canopy bed and the green-accented second bedroom with its decorative alcoves feel rustic and indulgent in equal measure. The villa is just a ten-minute drive from Vamos, a traditional village with a great variety of tavernas, shops and cafes. If you need to feel the sea rush over your feet for it to feel like a holiday, drive just fifteen minutes to Paralia Kalives. Spend the day swimming in the clear sea and sunbathing before driving back to the villa to soak in the deep bathtub. 

The infinity pool is as inviting as they come, with a shallow end that’s perfect for reading a book in, or sipping a glass of wine as you watch the sun set. The pool is the focal point of the gorgeous terrace, which includes several different seating areas – whether you’re a sun-worshipper or prefer the shade, there’s a cosy corner you’ll appreciate.

Open the sliding doors for seamless modern living. We love how the living space is wonderfully bright and open, while the homey decor makes the bedrooms feel cosy and inviting. Rustle up your favourite dishes in the sleek island kitchen, as you look out across the turquoise horizon. The views are spectacular from just about every angle and beckon for sunset drinks later on. 

Spend sun-soaked days relaxing on the loungers and swimming in the pool, or get out and explore this historical area. Make your way down to Almyrida for excellent seafood restaurants and traditional Greek tavernas, right on your doorstep. Alternatively, visit the charming neighbouring villages, such as Gavalohori, and taste the local cuisine in a quiet, authentic setting, before returning home for a tipple of Riki on the terrace.

You can relax on the pool's daybed as the kids play ping pong and jump on the trampoline. And when it's time for lunch, why not let your host arrange a private chef to cook some tasty food on the barbecue or wood stove? There's plenty to keep everyone occupied here for sure, but there's also so much to discover in the area. Situated in Xirosterni, a charming village with stone-built houses, you'll be a five-minute drive from the golden sands and crystal waters of Almyrida Beach.

High in the hillsides of Imbros and at the foot of the White Mountains, the setting of this stone-clad Cretan home is one-of-a-kind. While the stone arches and wooden beams are charming, the mezzanine bedroom areas won't be for everyone. Accessed via wooden staircases and open to the living space below, it will undoubtedly make for a unique stay. While outside, that private pool with sweeping countryside vistas is a welcome new addition to the original stone courtyard. While Imbros' tavernas and small shops are within walking distance, you'll need a car to explore the island and its postcard-pretty beaches.

Speaking of exploring, if you can pull yourself away from this private paradise, you'll find plenty to discover nearby – from sleepy traditional villages to sandy beaches and hidden coves. Plaka's handful of tavernas and the family-friend Almyrida Beach are an eight-minute drive away – but if you don't mind a longer journey, Chania is forty minutes by car and well worth a day trip.

After savouring a freshly made coffee on the terrace, head down to the pool area to while away sunny hours taking dips in the cool waters while admiring panoramic views of the lake.

What’s more, there’s a plethora of cafes and shops around the lake’s edge, as well as plenty of opportunities for pedal boating and walking on and along its shores.

Offering stunning northern views of the Aegean Sea, this home is perfect for lovers of sunsets and sunrises – and that must be just about everyone. The pool area is only shared with one other home, so you'll have plenty of space to soak up the sun, while the shaded terrace lets you retire for cocktails when you need a break. Inside, some of the home's design choices were a little eclectic for our tastes, but the large kitchen is a nice touch. When it's time to explore, the nearest beach is just a 150-metre stroll along a private path.

Acropolis & Chianti

Unique in style, this charming house is ideal for two couples or a cross-generational party. Why, you may ask? Quite simply, it can be divided into two self-contained halves. So, if you’re travelling as a group but still value your privacy, this home will be right up your street – and when everyone wants to socialise, throw open the interconnecting door and gather as one. Outdoors, you can all get together to enjoy the private pool, sun-kissed terraces and scenery. A perfect location for walkers and nature lovers, further afield, Chania and the Samaria Gorge make great destinations for a day trip.

This home in Xirosterni, a five-minute drive from Almyrida Beach, is the perfect place for a family or a small group of friends to spend quality time together. Outside, there's a play area for the little ones, comfortable loungers for sun worshipers and a barbecue area for the foodies. Though if you'd prefer to take a break from cooking, the villa’s chef can take care of dinner. The hot tub on the roof terrace is the best spot for sunset watching, and the pool is a welcome sight on warm afternoons. And if that wasn't enough, a breakfast basket is delivered daily. 

A Heart of Blue

Situated on the shores of Souda Bay, with views over the White Mountains and the glistening sea, this gorgeous nineteenth-century stone villa has been lovingly restored by your hosts using traditional techniques. Formerly the home of the village winemaker, great care has been taken to preserve its character – even going as far as to repair the old wine press – while also bringing it into the twenty-first century.

In true Greek style, the interiors are painted bright white, with exposed wooden beams and tiled floors. However, the mid-century-inspired furniture and stunning light wood and marble kitchen bring a touch of contemporary class. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and balcony, so that you can make the most of those views from the privacy of your room.

Step outside, and you'll find yourself in the heart of the traditional village of Xirosterni, surrounded by more beautiful stone houses. There's little in the way of tourist infrastructure here, so you can make the most of immersing yourself in local life. With that said, you're only a ten-minute drive from the charming waterfront tavernas, cafes and shops of Almyrida beach. 

Villa Plakiana

This villa sits just inland from Crete’s beach-fringed north coast, a short drive from the buzzing city of Chania. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the secluded Omprogialos Beach, or drift a little further afield (a twenty-minute drive) to Koutalas Beach. Chania is a forty-minute drive, which is ideal if you’re flying in to Chania Airport.

The villa itself sits in glorious isolation, with nothing but the swish of olive trees and cheep of birds to fill your days. Sitting in turquoise splendour against the rust-red landscape, the swimming pool is crying out for a dip in the heat of the day. Settle on a sunlounger, or head to te bubbling hot tub for a soak. There’s shaded dining on the terrace and a built-in stone barbecue, but our favourite spot has to be the secluded sofa terrace, swathed with white curtains for a private moment.
