Overlooking the glittering Chania Bay, this pet-friendly villa offers expansive views and plenty of outdoor space. You'll want to hire a car for your stay, but it's only a short drive to the nearest beaches and towns, including Chania and Platanias. The private pool can be heated at an extra cost, and the large, lush garden and dedicated children's section of the pool are ideal for families. The ground-floor bedroom has garden access and is great for guests with limited mobility. The upstairs bedrooms enjoy their own sun terrace and balcony, with excellent sea views.

The garden has a small, square-shaped pool, a summer kitchen, and fantastic vistas of the sparkling sea and the Island of Theodorou. Indoors, an open-plan living space makes gathering together a dream, while a sleek kitchen has you covered if you're not in the mood to barbecue. There is also a convenient desk for quick business calls and a Jacuzzi-style tub in the main en-suite. A double sofa bed keeps seeing arrangements adaptable – although, with only two bathrooms here, we suggest a reduced guest count unless you don't mind sharing.

The house has a modern feel and has been carefully designed to make the most of the sunshine. With plenty of outdoor space – there is 2626 square feet of gardens – your biggest decision will be where to chill out first. Perhaps you'll head for the balcony to sip your morning coffee with a view, before joining your guests at the patio table patio for a meal freshly cooked by your own breakfast chef, who visits daily. When the temperature soars, plunge into the refreshing swimming pool, or take refuge in the stylish living area inside – the contemporary vibe will cool you down instantly. 

The port city of Chania, with its picture-perfect harbour, is less than 20kms away. Take a stroll through the ancient streets and soak up the history before heading for one of the seafood restaurants. If you'd prefer a day at the beach then you're in luck – Platanias, with its golden sands and beach bars, is only 5kms away. And, however you choose to spend your time, you're guaranteed a great night's sleep when you return home.

From the colourful town of Chania, where the Venetian Port and Fortress sit proudly upon the coastline, you’ll be in awe of Cretan architecture and history. But while you’ve got this urban environment to explore, there’s plenty waiting for you in the rich countryside.

A fourteen-minute drive from the delights of Chania, through groves of olives and oranges, this villa sits within its own private 349 square-metre gardens. Built in a warm, honey-hued stone, it has a rustic feel despite its modern design. Glass doors and asymmetric pillars bring stylish modernity to the exterior, where you’ll also find the heated pool, outdoor lounge, vegetable and herb garden, plus sun loungers and a barbecue. Linger on the wooden decking to gaze out at your own Cretan kingdom before heading inside.

We love the high ceilings of the sun-flooded living space. With a huge L-shaped sofa by its futuristic wood-burning fireplace, find yet more 21st-century ideals in an otherwise rustic space, with exposed brickwork and chunky wooden dining table. And the marble bathroom has every luxury you could possibly need. A jacuzzi bathtub, bathrobes, and slippers come as standard, but you can also have massages and manicures upon request. Not bad for a country retreat.

If you're on the hunt for a unique villa on the north coast of Crete, we've found just the place. This dwelling is something special – grand arches, swaying palm trees and a gorgeous freeform private pool make it a luxurious home-from-home to make many happy holiday memories. It's perfect for families, featuring a private playground where kids can let off some steam.

You can spend lovely mornings sipping your coffee while you stroll around the landscaped gardens, and listen to the birdsong from the lush and leafy trees surrounding you. Then, start your day with a refreshing dip in the pool before lounging out in the sunshine. Come inside and cook up a feast of traditional Cretian cuisine – the island is known for its fresh fish – to eat all together on the alfresco dining set.

Striking and modern, this villa is located within walking distance of the beach at Agia Marina – although we do recommend hiring a car here – and makes for a great holiday base for a family or a group of friends. We love the pool area, which features comfy loungers and sweeping views. You’ll be able to relax and enjoy sunset drinks in the outdoor lounge area, or upstairs on the balcony. The inside is no less impressive, with more vistas to be admired through the huge windows. Note that this home is part of a two-villa complex so if you’re after total seclusion, you may need to look at other options. 

The Goddess of Crete

Located in the quiet Cretan village of Alikianos not far from the island's coastline, this newly built villa is the ideal spot for enjoying a little rest and relaxation. Out in the garden, peaceful afternoons can be spent floating gracefully through the swimming pool, cooking up lunch on the barbecue or lying back on the loungers with a view of the White Mountains.

What's perhaps most surprising is the home's interior, which wouldn't look out of place in an ultra-modern city apartment block. The design is dominated by clean lines, sleek surfaces and rich wooden furnishings. The huge kitchen is sure to appeal to guests with culinary talent — although the host offers the option to hire a private chef as well.

In the local area, there are a few shops and restaurants within walking distance, but the town of Chania takes around a quarter of an hour to reach by car. Gerani Beach takes a similar amount of time to reach, too.

If you’re keen to explore further afield, drive over to Chania, a city famous for its 14th-century Venetian harbour, 16th-century lighthouse and charming old town.

Meanwhile, Maleme Village, with a supermarket and a café bar, can also be found only 1.5 kilometres away. If you're keen to go further afield, Chania Town and its scenic Venetian harbour are 19 kilometres away.
