We love the high ceilings of the sun-flooded living space. With a huge L-shaped sofa by its futuristic wood-burning fireplace, find yet more 21st-century ideals in an otherwise rustic space, with exposed brickwork and chunky wooden dining table. And the marble bathroom has every luxury you could possibly need. A jacuzzi bathtub, bathrobes, and slippers come as standard, but you can also have massages and manicures upon request. Striking and modern, this villa is located within walking distance of the beach at Agia Marina – although we do recommend hiring a car here – and makes for a great holiday base for a family or a group of friends. We love the pool area, which features comfy loungers and sweeping views. You’ll be able to relax and enjoy sunset drinks in the outdoor lounge area, or upstairs on the balcony. The inside is no less impressive, with more vistas to be admired through the huge windows. Note that this home is part of a two-villa complex so if you’re after total seclusion, you may need to look at other options.

Located in the quiet Cretan village of Alikianos not far from the island's coastline, this newly built villa is the ideal spot for enjoying a little rest and relaxation. What's perhaps most surprising is the home's interior, which wouldn't look out of place in an ultra-modern city apartment block. The huge kitchen is sure to appeal to guests with culinary talent — although the host offers the option to hire a private chef as well.

In the local area, there are a few shops and restaurants within walking distance, but the town of Chania takes around a quarter of an hour to reach by car. Gerani Beach takes a similar amount of time to reach, too.

Its interior is nothing short of breathtaking, with a welcoming open layout on the ground floor that included a comfortable seating area overlooking the garden, an elegant wooden dining table that sits beneath a double-height ceiling, and a sleek kitchen equipped with everything you (or your private chef) could need to create culinary magic at mealtimes.

Four en-suite bedrooms are dotted throughout the home, providing you with some much-needed privacy from time to time. All open up directly to the outdoors – either to the immaculate garden or panoramic balconies that look out over the shining sea and Agii Theodori island, depending on the floor. Given the ease of access to the outside spaces, we imagine you'll spend plenty of time stretched out on poolside loungers or curled up in a hanging chair with a good book. Meanwhile, an outdoor dining area is ideal for breakfast in the cool morning air or serving up sumptuous evening meals as the sun drops behind the nearby mountains.

Fancy a change of scenery? The villa is well placed to enjoy the bars and restaurants of Platanias. Take your pick from casual beachside bites to creative takes on Cretan classics along the main stretch. Three kilometres away, you’ll find the calm shallows of the nearest sandy beach and the charming town of Chania is a short drive along the coast. Right on your doorstep (within 200 metres), you’ve got cafés, bakeries, tavernas and a mini market to stock up on supplies.

If you’re not cooling off from the Crete sun in the swimming pool, our favourite spot is the table and chairs on the covered veranda, facing a panorama of Crete’s stunning coastline. This is a great spot to dine of an evening. Inside, the home is split between two apartments, each with its own kitchen and living room. On the first floor, the living room is a grand space with marble floor, candelabra and velvety tufted sofas. Two full kitchens across the whole home mean it’s easy to cater for huge group meals and two living rooms give everyone enough space to spread out. The peace and quiet are blissful in bedrooms and each room has its own access to the terrace or a first-floor balcony.

From its elevated position, this villa boasts wonderful views of the countryside and the coast. It’s in a rural setting 4 kilometres above the village of Tavronitis, within easy reach of Chania – the old town is well worth a visit. We think it's essential to have a car to get the most out of your stay. The villa is traditional in style but has everything you might need for a comfortable stay – we love the mature gardens, the swimming pool, and the sun deck. Kids will love having a games room to take over, while grown-ups will enjoy cooking on the pizza oven and dining alfresco.

Nestled in the village of Polemarchi, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and sparkling blue ocean, this charming home is the perfect base for exploring Chania. Boasting a private balcony, you can begin your days by looking over the azure Mediterranean Sea whilst drinking your morning coffee. You'll be mere minutes from a pristine beach here, where you can swim in the crystal clear ocean and take a stroll along the golden sand. The nearby villages offer authentic culture and some of the most refined gastronomy in Greece if you're keen to taste the local delicacies. 

Speaking of food, the garden has a barbecue and outdoor dining area, which is perfect for alfresco dinners as the sun sets in the background.

When you want to explore further afield, you need only drive five minutes to reach the village of Kolymvari, which boasts a sand and shingle beach as well as some delightful tavernas. Chania is just twenty minutes away, too. 


Dreaming of Crete

There are some views that are so beautiful that they stop you dead in your tracks and leave you lost for words. You'll find one such panorama at this villa in northwestern Crete – step out onto the balcony and you're treated to a vista that takes in everything from the White Mountains and the Aegean Sea to the city of Chania in the distance.

However, there's more to this address than these majestic surroundings. We're smitten with the outdoor space, which has you covered for the sort of sunny days that Crete enjoys in spades. What could be more relaxing than swimming in the pool, dining on the terrace and sneaking in a nap in the hammock?

The home itself lies on the traditional side of things, with patches of stonework dotted across the walls and terracotta tiling underfoot. It's just as easy to get cosy inside too, thanks to the corner hydromassage bathtubs and the feature fireplace in the kitchen.

Although the address is certainly isolated, it doesn't take very long to reach things to see and do on the island. The nearest beach, for example, can be found 4km away in Tavronitis, which has a few shops and restaurants as well. In the opposite direction, you can embark upon hilltop walks and stop off at quaint villages along the way.

Sitting right on the coastline in the resort town of Kolymbari, you couldn't ask for a better view of the Chania Gulf than the uninterrupted panorama enjoyed at this villa. As you might imagine, there are plenty of spots from which to sit and simply take it all in, whether from the first-floor balcony or under the shade of the seafront gazebo.

Against this beautiful backdrop, you're spoilt for ways to pass summer days. The curvy swimming pool will be a faithful companion during the hottest part of the afternoon and there's even an adjoining children's section so little 'uns can join in on the fun. Surrounding this, you'll find loungers on which to soak up some rays, as well as a barbecue and dining table ready and waiting for alfresco feasts.

Although it's certainly a show-stealing outdoor space, we're wowed by the villa's interior, too. Traditional aspects, such as the exposed stonework and terracotta tiles, lend a homely charm, while the large windows let in lots of natural light – as well as looking out to that view. We also like the pair of smartly tiled bathtubs that will sing to those who love nothing more than a long and unrushed sofa, as well as the ping-pong table for the ultra-competitive among the group.

With the sea this close to the house, you probably don't need us to tell you that the beach can be reached in a matter of seconds. In the wider area, you're well served for restaurants and taverns, while the 13th-century Gonia Monastery lies just up the coastline and is well worth a visit. The same can be said for the city of Chania, 23km in the opposite direction.

Live off the land when you stay at this gorgeous home on a verdant three-acre farm in Crete. There are vines laden with grapes, as well as vegetables and avocados, quince, pomegranate, bananas and apricot trees – so it's easy to get your five a day here. 

There are plenty of herbs such as lavender, thyme and marjoram to flavour your cooking or G&Ts too. In the modern kitchen, when you arrive, you'll find some homemade wine and honey from your lovely host's own beehives, as well as a fruit basket.

Spend idyllic days sat by the pool, taking in the hillside views, then enjoy a lunch of fresh produce on the terrace. Inside, crisp white, greys and moss greens create a fresh vibe. We love the high vaulted ceilings, as well as the countryside vistas from the windows.

When you want to explore the area, there are a range of attractions nearby. Limnoupolis, a water park, is two miles away, while the Botanical Park of Crete is just over three miles. The old Venetian port of Chania, on the other hand, is just over five miles from this home. If you prefer to relax by the sea, then Stalos Beach is about five minutes in the car. Or, it's a ten-minute stroll to the pretty Agia Lake.
