Here, you'll wake up to the sun-kissed sea views each morning before enjoying an alfresco breakfast on the private terrace. The decor may be a bit plain, and there isn't a proper living space, but we think that's a fair compromise.

French doors open straight from the narrow street into the living area, which still retains ancient stone archways and barrel-vault ceilings. A design palette of bright white and honey-brown matches the historic touches of this apartment and slipping off to sleep in the boho-chic bedroom is a delight. The kitchenette may not have an oven, but there’s enough here to accommodate breakfast, quick meals and morning espressos. With the bedrooms spread across the main house and two Trullis, big groups can be split into smaller parties for a bit more privacy and space but still come together outside to play games in the pool or cook together in the outdoor kitchen. 

Host picnic-style dinners on the lawn, stargaze, and jump into the pool at midnight for a quick swim before retiring to one of the unique bedrooms.

Found on over an acre of lush vegetation, this trullo takes full advantage of the garden to add to its beauty, but it’s not the only card it holds. Only a few steps from the front door, you’ll find a private swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect setup for enjoying lazy sunshine days in and around the water. A little further on, the pool house offers comfortable seating for afternoon nibbles and wine, but not before an alfresco lunch prepared in the stone barbecue. 

Take afternoon walks in the garden to better admire the manicured hedges and olive groves or appreciate the landscape from the covered terrace at sunset. When you eventually venture inside, you don’t need to worry about severing your outdoor connection entirely, not when most of the living space comes with floor-to-ceiling windows and door leading out. Even in the bedrooms, you can open the doors to let the fresh air in or sneak out for a bit of late-night stargazing. 

If you manage to tear yourself away from this private paradise, you can find the coast only minutes away or explore the historic Ugento, Gallipoli or Santa Maria di Leuca.

Trullo Spectacular

Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

For those that want to get in touch with nature, this rebuilt farmer’s shack in the Puglian countryside is the perfect getaway.  Though you’re still just a five-minute drive from the supermarkets, restaurants and winding old streets of San Michele Salentino, and the UNESCO trulli houses of Ostuni are a twenty-minute drive (perfect for a day trip).

It’s all about escaping the everyday and embracing the landscape here. Surrounded by acres of olive groves and fruit orchards, you’ve got a natural larder to play with – perfect for cooking alfresco in the outdoor kitchen. The entire living space is designed to be outdoors, with the lounge sofas sets around a fire pit and the full kitchen shaded by bamboo and looking out into the olive grove. There’s a swimming pool for cooling off, a hammock strung beneath a century-old olive tree and an outdoor shower tucked away too.

The only thing you’ll find inside is the bedroom and bathroom. It’s a world of sleek concrete in here, with a desk should you fancy a spot of writing (there’s no Wifi, it’s time to take it easy). There’s a small sofa should the weather take a turn, and it’s set by the picture-frame window so you can still enjoy a glimpse of the rust-red land. But this place is designed for living outdoors, under the warmth of the southern Italian sun.

An inviting private pool is at the centre of the outdoor space and the dining terrace (with a charcoal barbecue) looks out over ancient olive trees. Accommodation is split between the main building, where you’ll find one of the bedrooms and the sparse living area, kept cool by white stone walls. One of the bedrooms is in its own lamia building and a further bedroom is in the annexe with garden access. It’s a short drive to Ostuni for days wandering the ancient streets, and Brindisi is a short hop in the car.

The pool is perfect for cooling down on hot days, after which you can imagine yourself picking at the famous local olives accompanied by wine before dining on fresh Italian produce under Baroque arches. We adored the gazebo on the lawn as the perfect setting for reading or daydreaming when seeking solace. Known fondly by the Greeks as an ancient town, nearby Ceglie Messapica is one of Puglia’s oldest towns. It is amazingly well preserved for those who enjoy living history and not far from some of Italy’s best beaches. After spending your days doing as much, or as little as you like, everyone lived happily ever after, watching the sunset over the magical stone yard and distant fertile plains every evening.

On a summer's day, there's no better spot to unwind than beside the private pool. Afterwards, tuck into an alfresco dinner on the terrace – your host can arrange cooking lessons and chefs for a fee. We're big fans of the traditional features inside – think exposed stone and arched doorways – yet with a collection of en-suite bedrooms, everyone will have plenty of space and privacy.

Located about 10km inland from Puglia's western coast, this home has plenty of outdoor space for fun in the sun. While the interior is a little sparse in places – you won't find sofa space for everyone here nor enough seats around the indoor dining table – it's the garden, terrace and saltwater pool that sold this home to us. The alfresco dining area is perfect for evening meals – although if you've got a full house, some guests will be dining at the covered seating area. There is also an annex with a bathroom and sofa bed - perfect for a couple looking for privacy. Nearby, you'll find supermarkets and eateries to keep you well-fed.
