Bright and minimalist, this single-level villa can be found on the outskirts of a small town renowned for its wine culture in the heart of Apulia. Drive to Noci in minutes to explore the winding lanes and quaint cafes or pick out your favourite vintage. Though the house is cosy, the outdoor space is what really drew us here. The partially enclosed porch and outdoor dining table are only just outshined by the private swimming pool. There's also a nook with a stone barbecue. It's ideal for families or friends wanting to explore the Italian countryside.

It's not a trip to Puglia without a stay in a trullo house, and this is a gorgeous one. Located in the rolling countryside, within easy reach of some of the area's historic towns, it's a great place to begin your Italian adventures. 

The traditional stone building has plenty of original touches – you'll love the conical roofs and decorative fireplace that provides a rustic charm. When you get hungry, you can head to the kitchen and cook up your favourite pasta dishes using fresh local ingredients. And, there's no better place to serve up your culinary creations than outside on the patio, as you breathe in the fresh air and admire the lush greenery surrounding you. 

When you fancy a day trip, there are plenty of places to visit in the surrounding area. The magnificent white city of Ostuni is around twenty minutes away by car, where you can stroll through the labyrinthine old quarter. The hilltop town of Martina Franca is around twenty-five minutes away, and if you fancy a day at the beach then you can drive to the coast in just over half an hour.

Sitting on the west coast of Italy's heel, this authentic home rests in the heart of a sleepy, historical town. Gallipoli is an oasis of calm, a relaxed vibe emanating from the colourful streets and dreamy piazzas. Welcome to this cosy retreat, surrounded by age-old olive trees. Time seems to have stopped here – the traditional exterior and interiors hark back to a bygone era, and we love the open fireplace. Sure, like most older homes, this place has its quirks. But you do have mod cons like a beautiful swimming pool, an outdoor stereo system, barbecue and kitchen area. The garden is a paradise – our favourite spot has to be the vine-covered gazebo. If you can tear yourself away, explore the nearby Castellana Grotte or head to the coast.

Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

For those that want to get in touch with nature, this rebuilt farmer’s shack in the Puglian countryside is the perfect getaway.  Though you’re still just a five-minute drive from the supermarkets, restaurants and winding old streets of San Michele Salentino, and the UNESCO trulli houses of Ostuni are a twenty-minute drive (perfect for a day trip).

It’s all about escaping the everyday and embracing the landscape here. Surrounded by acres of olive groves and fruit orchards, you’ve got a natural larder to play with – perfect for cooking alfresco in the outdoor kitchen. The entire living space is designed to be outdoors, with the lounge sofas sets around a fire pit and the full kitchen shaded by bamboo and looking out into the olive grove. There’s a swimming pool for cooling off, a hammock strung beneath a century-old olive tree and an outdoor shower tucked away too.

The only thing you’ll find inside is the bedroom and bathroom. It’s a world of sleek concrete in here, with a desk should you fancy a spot of writing (there’s no Wifi, it’s time to take it easy). There’s a small sofa should the weather take a turn, and it’s set by the picture-frame window so you can still enjoy a glimpse of the rust-red land. But this place is designed for living outdoors, under the warmth of the southern Italian sun.

Its enviable array of restaurants that serve up mouthwatering Puglian specialities. 

Alternatively, drive 30km or so in the opposite direction, and you'll arrive on Puglia's awe-inspiring Adriatic coast. Its shimmering azure waters and white sand beaches are more than a match for the Maldives.

Vaulted ceilings and original tiles underfoot are a nod to this 18th-century home’s former glory, and keep things naturally cool inside. Each bedroom has its own style and there’s a dedicated office room for those working remotely. An inviting private pool is at the centre of the outdoor space and the dining terrace (with a charcoal barbecue) looks out over ancient olive trees. Accommodation is split between the main building, where you’ll find one of the bedrooms and the sparse living area, kept cool by white stone walls. One of the bedrooms is in its own lamia building and a further bedroom is in the annexe with garden access. It’s a short drive to Ostuni for days wandering the ancient streets, and Brindisi is a short hop in the car.

Nestled in the picturesque Valle d'Itria, this historic home is a real gem. It's surrounded by centuries-old olive groves and offers views of nearby Ostuni, only a five-minute drive away. And while it's certainly peaceful here, there are plenty of historic towns and lively beaches not too far away in the car, as well.

Originally built as a farmhouse, the rooms have been restored into a peaceful sanctuary while retaining the original character. On the outskirts of Polignano a Mare, you'll find this contemporary villa. It's perched on a hill overlooking the coast, so if sea views are what you're after, this is the place for you. We reckon you'll spend most days floating in the pool, dining on the extensive terrace, or swinging in the hammock under the olive trees. The breezy interiors also offer panoramas, as well as comfortable spots to lounge away from the sun. Of course, with Puglia's beautiful beaches an easy drive away, day trips will also be on the cards.

Polignano Pearl

This is Italy in its finest, purest form. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and wild crops, this beautifully restored trullo building is a homage to Puglia’s humble origins. An architectural delight, with its white-stone spires and coned roof, the effect is nothing short of a fairytale home.  The interior benefits from all-stone walls, floors and low archways, with ceramic jugs, woven baskets and antique ornaments that create a boho-chic and calming ambience in every room. From the outset, this home impresses with its gloriously green scenery and stately stone facade. The interior strikes the perfect balance between authentic charm and contemporary comfort, and you'll feel like royalty as soon as you set foot in the elegant entryway. Throughout, high barrel vault ceilings, sweeping archways and heaps of natural light create a free-flowing ambience primed for relaxation. 

The real magnum opus of this home is undoubtedly its outdoor space. With one acre of beautifully landscaped gardens, including various sun-soaked and shaded spots, it beckons you to unwind in the splendour of your surroundings. The private pool provides the best seat in the house, boasting a crystal-clear viewpoint of Ostuni from its sparkling waters. Spend your days poolside, soaking up the sun or relaxing beneath the pergola with a glass of lemonade. Come sunset, fire up the barbecue and gather on the terrace for a delicious alfresco feast.

Ode to Ostuni

This cluster of Trulli homes is like a fairytale illustration come to life. Each bone-white stone structure is home to a separate bedroom, kitchen and living room, with the outside space connecting them all together. Inside, comfy beds are nestled in archways and circular rooms have bare stone walls for an authentic feel. There’s no shortage of mod-cons though, with flatscreen TVs and desks for remote working if you need.

Really, though, this place was made for outdoor living, making the most of the sunny climes of Italy’s heel. There’s a full outdoor kitchen with a traditional stone bread oven, and myriad places to dine in the sun or shade – the choice is yours. Seats in the shade of ancient olive trees provide a moment’s respite. But the piece de resistance has to be the covered hot tub, surrounded by sun loungers to dry off after.

The location is a boon too, just outside the centre of one of Puglia’s prettiest towns – Locorotondo. A cluster of white medieval churches makes up the historic hilltop centre, where winding cobbled streets are filled with family-run trattoria and slow-food eateries. The UNESCO town of Ostuni is also within day-trip distance if you have a car. 

Bone-White Stone

Hidden away in a quiet spot in Lecce's old town, this home is a lot more contemporary than its location would imply. There's a minimalist streak to the living quarters, with stark white walls lending an innate brightness and the kitchen full of clean lines and sleek surfaces.

You'll notice that there are a few historic touches in the outdoor space, however. The patio is surrounded by walls made of golden stone typical of the region and made all the more pretty with the presence of overhanging branches that lend a little privacy. If it's too cold to sit in the open air, there's also a roofed terrace that's just as relaxing in our books.

If sightseeing is high up on your list during your stay, you'll be happy to learn that the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Roman amphitheatre both lie around the corner from the apartment. It won't take you too long to reach the beach at San Cataldo in the car, either.

Tucked away in the quiet San Lazzaro district, this cosy apartment offers some peace and quiet within a few steps of the historic centre of Lecce. Boasting close proximity to some of the city's most famous monuments, begin the day by whipping up breakfast and a cup of coffee in the kitchen before heading off to explore. 

Walk for a few minutes and you'll reach Piazza Sant'Oronzo, which is at the heart of the Old Town. Admire the mix of architectural styles from different eras, before browsing the shops at the edge of the square. You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a lunch spot, with many eateries serving up authentic Italian cuisine just steps away.

When you get home after a busy day, it's time to enjoy the private garden. Pour yourself an Aperol Spritz or a glass of fizz and take a seat on the terrace to enjoy the evening breeze.

Puglian Past

Located in the heart of Puglia’s picturesque countryside, this traditional trullo home is a unique base for a family holiday or as a retreat for a group of friends. The interior may be on the minimalist side but it’s hard not to fall under the spell of the whitewashed walls and conical ceilings. In addition to that, you’ll also enjoy a garden with a private swimming pool and an outdoor hot tub. For delicious family meals, gather in the alfresco dining area or head inside where a generous table also awaits. Bear in mind that a car is recommended here in order to explore the area and reach the nearby towns, which include Ostuni. 

Good Heart

With its beautiful frescoed ceiling, arched walls, and cavernous spaces, this apartment makes for an atmospheric stay in the heart of the Baroque city of Lecce. Alongside historical features such as traditional shutters, the home has pops of modernity, from the bright artwork to the blue chandeliers.  Unusually for this packed-in city, this home has a private swimming pool – perfect for cooling off in the height of Puglia's summer. The sheltered terrace looks over the pool and we love the idea of long lunches or late dinners with friends here. Alternatively, Lecce's many seafood restaurants are only a short stroll along the cobbled streets. The house is in the centre of the city, with Roman amphitheatres, medieval castles, and grand cathedrals all jostling for space. On warmer days, it's less than a thirty-minute drive to the Mediterranean and many seaside tavernas.

A ten-minute drive from Ostuni, this villa offers a dreamy escape in Puglia. The garden was designed to take advantage of the sunshine. You can work out in the outdoor gym, cool off with a dip in the pool, or tuck into an Italian feast on the terrace. Inside, the ivory hues and natural accents fit in perfectly with Puglia's white-washed towns. Our favourite space is the main bedroom, where a relaxing soak in the Jacuzzi bath is the perfect way to end the day. Just note that two bedrooms don't have air conditioning.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll spend most of your time in the heated salt-water pool or dining alfresco.
