Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

If you’re looking for Puglian countryside isolation, then this striking villa will certainly hit the mark. Just 7 kilometres from the nearest town, Ceglie Messapica, this traditional ‘trullo’ is native to the south of the country. In essence, it means a round building made of stone, with cone-shaped roofs. In reality, it makes for a truly unique stay. After entering this impressive, almost otherworldly exterior, you’ll be just as taken aback by the gorgeous decor. While the furnishings and colour palette of the living space are both neutral and understated, this makes way for the most important element of this home – stone. Rustic, natural, and elegant, the artisan masonry is fully exposed for your admiration. We love the cosy nooks painted in warming terracotta – one for dining and another for bathing in the master bedroom. As for the other room, you’ll need to traverse your private grounds. Pass by the saltwater pool, mini waterfall, olive trees, deck chairs, barbecue, and a plush dining area before arriving at another building. It has a fortress-like appearance, again in a rich terracotta, where you can find yet more peace and serenity as you sip negronis in bed.

Afterwards, while away an afternoon, gently swinging in a hammock as you get stuck into your holiday reading. It’s all about escaping the everyday and embracing the landscape here. Surrounded by acres of olive groves and fruit orchards, you’ve got a natural larder to play with – perfect for cooking alfresco in the outdoor kitchen. The entire living space is designed to be outdoors, with the lounge sofas sets around a fire pit and the full kitchen shaded by bamboo and looking out into the olive grove. There’s a swimming pool for cooling off, a hammock strung beneath a century-old olive tree and an outdoor shower tucked away too.

The only thing you’ll find inside is the bedroom and bathroom. It’s a world of sleek concrete in here, with a desk should you fancy a spot of writing (there’s no Wifi, it’s time to take it easy). There’s a small sofa should the weather take a turn, and it’s set by the picture-frame window so you can still enjoy a glimpse of the rust-red land. But this place is designed for living outdoors, under the warmth of the southern Italian sun.

Set in colourful gardens, edged with mellow stone walls, this trullo is a wonderful place to relax. There's a swimming pool, a barbecue for tasty lunches and a shaded dining area. Inside, there's character aplenty, including exposed stone arches and an open fire. We love that both bedrooms open out onto the terrace, so there shouldn't be any quarrels about who has which room (though one has the advantage, it has an en-suite – maybe keep that quiet). When you're ready to explore what the local area offers, head to Ostuni, just 5 kilometres away. Your host also offers a complimentary guided tour of Alberobello (though it's quite a ride from this home).

The Ode to Sunsets 

Nestled ​​in the countryside of Martina Franca, this home is a perfect base for an Italian adventure. Surrounded by nature, you’ll need a car to explore the local area, but a drive will take you to local towns, cities, and a selection of Ionian beaches. Sun worshipers will adore the outdoor space, and the private pool will be a hit with the whole family, while the villa itself is fuss-free and comfortable for eight people. Just bear in mind that at full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room.

Centuries-old oaks cast welcome shade over the gazebo with its dining area, as well as the lawn bordering the private swimming pool. Inside, there’s a rustic charm to the interiors and there are several seating areas. If you manage to explore all of the land here before you leave, then you may have time for some excursions. The town of Ceglie Messapica is 1 kilometre away, while Ostuni is just over 10 kilometres from this home.

The Century Oak

Hidden amongst olive trees, this villa is a great base for a Puglia adventure. The outdoor spaces stand out here – the private pool is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, while the alfresco dining area and outdoor kitchen mean you'll rarely need to venture inside. The interior is pleasant, though it lacks natural light in places. And while we loved the exposed brickwork in the living area, one of the beds is here – this might prove inconvenient and makes the home more suitable for families in our eyes. Location-wise, you're well served, because not only is the coast not far away, the charming city of Ostuni is just a 3km drive.

If you have an amenity in mind, this home probably has it. Whether it's in the charming indoors or the idyllic outside space, this home is brimming with high-end facilities. 

We'll start in the wonderfully unique interior, a quaint space that's shaped by hidden coves and crevices. Cute beds are tucked under stone archways and cosy cushioned seats are dotted between the exposed brick walls. It's an indoor space like no other. 

Wander outside and the flurry of amenities slowly begin to reveal themselves. Find a BBQ and pizza oven to satisfy any foodies looking for authentic, home-cooked food. Complement each bite with a glass of Barolo wine on the green sofas under the pergola.

A wooden dining table rests under another pergola for a more formal dining experience. Or you can forget about food altogether and immerse yourself in the home's activities. Spend lazy mornings and sunny afternoons in the paradisal pool, kissed by the sun and refreshed by the lush greenery. 

If you prefer a more lively day, practice your skills on the mini football pitch. When the whole group wants to get involved, move over to the outside court for wholesome games of badminton or volleyball.

Once upon a time, in a home entirely made of stone, a family enjoyed an exceptional fairytale stay in Puglia. In the vein of true Pugliese style, the house has retained its wonderful traditional charm. In contrast, its stone interiors have been updated for a luxurious and rejuvenating stay on the heel of Italy’s boot. The pool is perfect for cooling down on hot days, after which you can imagine yourself picking at the famous local olives accompanied by wine before dining on fresh Italian produce under Baroque arches. We adored the gazebo on the lawn as the perfect setting for reading or daydreaming when seeking solace. Known fondly by the Greeks as an ancient town, nearby Ceglie Messapica is one of Puglia’s oldest towns. It is amazingly well preserved for those who enjoy living history and not far from some of Italy’s best beaches. After spending your days doing as much, or as little as you like, everyone lived happily ever after, watching the sunset over the magical stone yard and distant fertile plains every evening.
