There’s plenty of character inside with its vaulted ceilings and stone steps (these are quite steep, mind). The location here is great, you’ll find a bakery 200 metres away, so that’s breakfast and lunch covered, while there’s a museum 500 metres from here. It consists of two separate buildings, and with the privacy here, we think this is the perfect stay for a group of friends or history buffs to enjoy traditional Italian living. It’s not too traditional though, as it benefits from modern facilities including a private pool, alfresco dining area and functional furnishings. Located just 4km from the town of Francavilla Fontana, and 15km from Ostuni, known as 'The White City,' this home is situated to explore the region's many wonders.

This cosy studio apartment is in a 16th-century mansion renovated into apartments. The charm and history of the home have been retained – you can even visit the original chapel, and the coat of arms of one of the first families to own the home can be seen on the front door. Inside, space is limited, and the sleeping arrangements aren’t the most comfortable or private – we think this is best suited to one adult and one child sharing. You will have access to the shared lounge and relaxation area though, giving you a bit more room to spread out.

In the 16th century, this home was a grand mansion. It’s since been renovated into a series of beautiful apartments, each one a splendid base for exploring historic Ostuni. This apartment features a striking domed ceiling above the mezzanine-level bedroom, and has a petite balcony where you can sip vino and watch the action of the square below. There isn't much space but it's a good fit for a couple, and we think the communal spaces – including an ancient chapel and a relaxation area – more than make up for it.

This home is nestled just outside of Ostuni and benefits from views of the Adriatic coast.  Designed as a series of small, independent buildings, you'll feel as though you've entered your very own private village. While the low archways and ceilings may require taller guests to exercise caution, the home's compact design adds to its unique character, but those with limited mobility may find accessing the beds a bit challenging. We think this is a great family home, as there’s a dedicated bedroom here that sleeps up to two children, and kids will enjoy the pool and exploring the gardens. You can find an array of restaurants, bars, shops and museums in nearby Ostuni.

We think at most two adults can stay here comfortably as it’s on the smaller side – the pull-out bed is definitely better suited to children. This ancient, light-stone property in Ostuni offers big groups exclusive use of a B&B in the centre of town. A breakfast buffet is included every day – best enjoyed at the scattering of tables on the sunny terrace – and guests have private use of the small, heated spa pool. There is plenty of space to dine, but the kitchen is set up as a B&B counter and there isn’t a dedicated living room. Bedrooms are all suites and some have their own seating areas and mini bars. Those who appreciate a little more privacy can bag one of the bedrooms that has direct street access.

Given the lack of privacy in the shared bedroom, this ground-floor apartment may be best suited to a young family of three, but it's a great base for sightseers with busy schedules. While the historic sights of the city might keep you close to home, the Adriatic coast is only 8 kilometres away if you feel like a beach day.

Located in a sixteenth-century building in the heart of Ostuni, this functional apartment makes a great base for exploring the historic town. We were big fans of the small industrial kitchenette, while the stone walls and arching brick ceilings speak to the building's history. The living area only being accessible by a ladder isn't exactly convenient, but luckily you'll find plenty of shared spaces within the building – perfect if you're looking to mingle with your fellow guests. And the communal bath area strikes us as ideal for unwinding after a day traversing Ostuni's winding streets. 

The Peaceful Palace

In central Ostuni, this rustic apartment is situated in a renovated 16th-century mansion and is in a great spot for getting to know the city. You won't find much parking here, and the kitchen is certainly on the smaller side. But you'll have plenty of local shops and fantastic restaurants on your doorstep, so you won't miss out on much without a car. The apartment building also has a number of cosy communal spaces, including a lounge and an indoor spa bath.

We love that you are immersed in the building's history  – well-maintained stone walls abound here. While the home can sleep three, we think it's better suited to families, as all the guests are sleeping in the same room. In the communal areas, you'll find spots to read and chat, along with the interior courtyard and bath area. When it's time to explore, you'll find Ostuni town centre a short stroll away.

We think it's worth having a car here to get the most out of your trip – you'll find some lovely villages like Cisternino nearby, and the gorgeous beaches of Torre Guaceto are a short drive away.

And while we loved the exposed brickwork in the living area, one of the beds is here – this might prove inconvenient and makes the home more suitable for families in our eyes. From the outset, this home impresses with its gloriously green scenery and stately stone facade.
