Just seconds away from the gorgeous Ionian Coast, this two-storey home's beachside location more than makes up for its lack of a pool. There are several spots to look out over the turquoise water here – perfect for alfresco dining or a sunset cocktail. You'll even find an outdoor Jacuzzi to retire to once it's dark. Indoors, we weren't as keen on the simple decor, but everything you'll need for an extended stay is there. If you tire of days at the beach – and given the home provides access to kayaks, we'll wonder if you will – you'll find the historic towns of Sava and Taranto a short drive away.

It's not a trip to Puglia without a stay in a trullo house, and this is a gorgeous one. Located in the rolling countryside, within easy reach of some of the area's historic towns, it's a great place to begin your Italian adventures. 

The traditional stone building has plenty of original touches – you'll love the conical roofs and decorative fireplace that provides a rustic charm. When you get hungry, you can head to the kitchen and cook up your favourite pasta dishes using fresh local ingredients. And, there's no better place to serve up your culinary creations than outside on the patio, as you breathe in the fresh air and admire the lush greenery surrounding you. 

When you fancy a day trip, there are plenty of places to visit in the surrounding area. The magnificent white city of Ostuni is around twenty minutes away by car, where you can stroll through the labyrinthine old quarter. The hilltop town of Martina Franca is around twenty-five minutes away, and if you fancy a day at the beach then you can drive to the coast in just over half an hour.

Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

With the Italian sun beating down, don your sun hat and settle down on a lounger with a good book and a refreshing glass of white wine for ultimate relaxation. When you crave a little respite from the heat of the day, sink into your pool and enjoy a fun-filled few hours with loved ones.

From the fairytale cone roofs of the old section to the thick white walls of local stone and lime. Now, it’s a relaxing retreat for a small group with a glorious infinity pool at its core. Lined with loungers, this is the perfect place to cool off from the hot southern sun. There’s dining for the whole group out here too, in the full outdoor kitchen. You can admire the silhouettes of ancient olive trees as the sun sets over the countryside.    

Inside, every original detail and modern flourish feels like it has been carefully considered, from hand-picked crockery to candle-filled stone fireplaces. The kitchen is all sleek modernity, and the bedrooms are decked out in boho style with crisp white walls and straw-coloured accents.

You’re in the heart of the blissfully quiet Puglian countryside here, but a twelve-minute drive takes you to the buzzing old town of Ceglie Messapica, where ancient church bells chime on a Sunday and cafés spill out into squares. The UNESCO town of Ostuni is just a twenty-minute drive too – perfect for a day trip.

For those that want to get in touch with nature, this rebuilt farmer’s shack in the Puglian countryside is the perfect getaway.  Though you’re still just a five-minute drive from the supermarkets, restaurants and winding old streets of San Michele Salentino, and the UNESCO trulli houses of Ostuni are a twenty-minute drive (perfect for a day trip).

It’s all about escaping the everyday and embracing the landscape here. Surrounded by acres of olive groves and fruit orchards, you’ve got a natural larder to play with – perfect for cooking alfresco in the outdoor kitchen. The entire living space is designed to be outdoors, with the lounge sofas sets around a fire pit and the full kitchen shaded by bamboo and looking out into the olive grove. There’s a swimming pool for cooling off, a hammock strung beneath a century-old olive tree and an outdoor shower tucked away too.

The only thing you’ll find inside is the bedroom and bathroom. It’s a world of sleek concrete in here, with a desk should you fancy a spot of writing (there’s no Wifi, it’s time to take it easy). There’s a small sofa should the weather take a turn, and it’s set by the picture-frame window so you can still enjoy a glimpse of the rust-red land. But this place is designed for living outdoors, under the warmth of the southern Italian sun.

Set just outside the historic centre of Polignano a Mare, this home offers plenty of space for four people to spread out and enjoy some quiet time. There’s no TV, but with many amenities on your doorstep, two sun-kissed terraces, sea views and the Mediterranean climate to enjoy, we think you’ll be too busy to notice. Locally, you’ll find restaurants, ice cream shops and boutiques within walking distance, while popular destinations such as Monopoli and Castellana Grotte are a short drive away.

This cluster of Trulli homes is like a fairytale illustration come to life. Each bone-white stone structure is home to a separate bedroom, kitchen and living room, with the outside space connecting them all together. Inside, comfy beds are nestled in archways and circular rooms have bare stone walls for an authentic feel. There’s no shortage of mod-cons though, with flatscreen TVs and desks for remote working if you need.

Really, though, this place was made for outdoor living, making the most of the sunny climes of Italy’s heel. There’s a full outdoor kitchen with a traditional stone bread oven, and myriad places to dine in the sun or shade – the choice is yours. Seats in the shade of ancient olive trees provide a moment’s respite. But the piece de resistance has to be the covered hot tub, surrounded by sun loungers to dry off after.

The location is a boon too, just outside the centre of one of Puglia’s prettiest towns – Locorotondo. A cluster of white medieval churches makes up the historic hilltop centre, where winding cobbled streets are filled with family-run trattoria and slow-food eateries. The UNESCO town of Ostuni is also within day-trip distance if you have a car.

A ten-minute drive from Ostuni, this villa offers a dreamy escape in Puglia. The garden was designed to take advantage of the sunshine. You can work out in the outdoor gym, cool off with a dip in the pool, or tuck into an Italian feast on the terrace. Inside, the ivory hues and natural accents fit in perfectly with Puglia's white-washed towns. Our favourite space is the main bedroom, where a relaxing soak in the Jacuzzi bath is the perfect way to end the day. Just note that two bedrooms don't have air conditioning.

Between the olive groves of the Puglian countryside, this villa is a lesson in minimalism and sleek design. An inviting private pool is at the centre of the outdoor space and the dining terrace (with a charcoal barbecue) looks out over ancient olive trees. Accommodation is split between the main building, where you’ll find one of the bedrooms and the sparse living area, kept cool by white stone walls. One of the bedrooms is in its own lamia building and a further bedroom is in the annexe with garden access. It’s a short drive to Ostuni for days wandering the ancient streets, and Brindisi is a short hop in the car.

If you’re seeking a picturesque home in central Monopoli, this second-floor apartment is just the ticket. There’s no parking here, but this city on the Adriatic Sea is easily explored on foot. Speaking of, you’ll find the Baroque Monopoli Cathedral, the 16th-century Castle of Carlo V, and the frescoed Palmieri Palace within walking distance. Located within a period building, you’ll find plenty of original features here. Though you’ll need to climb the stairs up, you'll love spending evenings on the rooftop terrace relaxing with wine and grilling up dinners.

It’s worth noting the rooms are spread across the main house and an adjoining annexe, but this is a great option for families and groups in search of simplicity and ease. Plus, it’s just a ten-minute drive to Monopoli and the nearest beaches.

This charming villa is made up of a trullo and a lamia made from local stone – staying here, you get a taste of authentic southern Italian living. It’s just 4 kilometres from the town centre of Castellana Grotte, and 15 kilometres from iconic Alberobello. It’s in a great position for exploring Puglia, though we’d recommend bringing a car to do so. The home is traditional and inviting. We love the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, which can be enjoyed from the terrace. Outside, you’ll find a private pool in addition to a fantastic alfresco dining area – there’s a pizza oven and barbecue to cook on.

Sitting on the west coast of Italy's heel, this authentic home rests in the heart of a sleepy, historical town. Gallipoli is an oasis of calm, a relaxed vibe emanating from the colourful streets and dreamy piazzas. Wander through the harbour and feel any worries melt away underneath the gentle warmth of the sun. 

Despite its welcoming atmosphere and charming energy, Gallipoli has remained under the tourism radar. Even in the height of summer, the streets maintain an unashamedly Italian feel, perfect for immersing yourself into the culture.

Set in colourful gardens, edged with mellow stone walls, this trullo is a wonderful place to relax. There's a swimming pool, a barbecue for tasty lunches and a shaded dining area. Inside, there's character aplenty, including exposed stone arches and an open fire. We love that both bedrooms open out onto the terrace, so there shouldn't be any quarrels about who has which room (though one has the advantage, it has an en-suite – maybe keep that quiet). When you're ready to explore what the local area offers, head to Ostuni, just 5 kilometres away. Your host also offers a complimentary guided tour of Alberobello (though it's quite a ride from this home).

Welcome to this cosy retreat, surrounded by age-old olive trees. Time seems to have stopped here – the traditional exterior and interiors hark back to a bygone era, and we love the open fireplace. Sure, like most older homes, this place has its quirks. But you do have mod cons like a beautiful swimming pool, an outdoor stereo system, barbecue and kitchen area. The garden is a paradise – our favourite spot has to be the vine-covered gazebo. If you can tear yourself away, explore the nearby Castellana Grotte or head to the coast.
