Inside, it is just as charming – the traditional Italian floor tiling is a masterpiece in itself. Coupled with white-wash walls and stone ceilings, there are elements that will make you think of a grand cathedral. Cool and comfortable, the bedrooms are a lovely peaceful sanctuary from the daytime sun. We love how there is a gentle nod to contemporary style with backlighting on some stunning antique features.

The ancient Heroon Centopietre, an enigmatic tomb of the noble hero Gimignano, is a short walk away, while the Ionian Sea is easily reached by car, whether you head west to the Marina di San Gregorio beach or east to Il Ciolo.

Should you peel yourself away from this slice of paradise, the coastal town of Gallipoli (a twenty-minute drive) is well worth visiting. On an island off the mainland, only accessible via boat or a mystical 16th-century bridge, it's full of old-world architecture, winding narrow streets and quaint shops. Spiaggia della Purita is also a lovely beach day out, for those after the sand, sea and surf.

Nestled in the Puglian village of Santa Maria di Leuca, you’re in a wonderful position to explore the region. Puglia is known for its characteristic architecture, unique cuisine, and long-stretching coastline – the nearby towns of Gallipoli, Castro, Nardò, Otranto, and Lecce give you an insight into all three, and more.

When you’re not exploring, let the hours blissfully roll by while you swap between the sun lounger and the shady day bed. Get lost in your current read, taking in the view of fields backed by the sea, and enjoy long swims in the pool, the scent of aromatic plants hanging in the air. This wonderful villa is located in the highest part of San Gregorio in the countryside of Patù. It’s less than 2 kilometres from the Bay of San Gregorio, known for its beautiful sunsets and the beach of Marina di Felloniche. We love the garden and its centuries-old olive trees, and the views of the countryside and sea are glorious. There are two porches to enjoy, with an outdoor seating area and a barbecue for family feasts under the stars. The villa itself is a simple space with rustic style and modern comforts – it’s an excellent base for a relaxing Italian break.

Sitting on the west coast of Italy's heel, this authentic home rests in the heart of a sleepy, historical town. Gallipoli is an oasis of calm, a relaxed vibe emanating from the colourful streets and dreamy piazzas. Comprised of one main building and two other units, this home is perfect if your group don't fancy living right on top of each other. The sleek kitchen comes with everything you could need for a comfortable stay, and out on the terrace, there's a wonderful shaded eating space with a built-in barbecue. Bedroom-wise, all are comfy and serene affairs – one even has its own kitchenette. If you can drag yourself away, Santa Maria di Leuca is close by. From here, apply your sea legs and discover legendary sea caves where the water is clear blue. Or just pull up a seat in a local restaurant and eat some of the best seafood known to man.

Look up ‘idyllic’ in the dictionary and you’ll probably find a picture of this dreamy home we spotted on the outskirts of Neviano, deep in the heart of rural Puglia. Surrounded by ancient pines and fragrant geraniums, this place is the perfect setting for a relaxing holiday with family or friends, offering a total escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. 

Inside, neutral tones and cool, tile floors give this home a rustic quality which is only heightened by the gorgeous, stone fireplace that acts as a focal point for the open-plan living area. As much as we love the interior though, it’s the outside space that really captured our imagination, boasting an elegant patio with plenty of sun loungers for making the most of the Italian sunshine. Settle in for a day of sunbathing or slip into your swimming costume and cool off with a quick dip in the pool before firing up the grill for an alfresco lunch with all your favourite people. Delizioso!

If you fancy getting out and about during your stay, you’re within easy reach of Nardò and Gallipoli, two of Puglia’s best-known towns. Set off for a day of sightseeing or make a beeline for the nearest beach and spend the afternoon topping up your tan by the Ionian Sea before heading home for an evening aperitivo. For those that want to get in touch with nature, this rebuilt farmer’s shack in the Puglian countryside is the perfect getaway.  Though you’re still just a five-minute drive from the supermarkets, restaurants and winding old streets of San Michele Salentino, and the UNESCO trulli houses of Ostuni are a twenty-minute drive (perfect for a day trip).

It’s all about escaping the everyday and embracing the landscape here. Surrounded by acres of olive groves and fruit orchards, you’ve got a natural larder to play with – perfect for cooking alfresco in the outdoor kitchen. The entire living space is designed to be outdoors, with the lounge sofas sets around a fire pit and the full kitchen shaded by bamboo and looking out into the olive grove. There’s a swimming pool for cooling off, a hammock strung beneath a century-old olive tree and an outdoor shower tucked away too.

The only thing you’ll find inside is the bedroom and bathroom. It’s a world of sleek concrete in here, with a desk should you fancy a spot of writing (there’s no Wifi, it’s time to take it easy). There’s a small sofa should the weather take a turn, and it’s set by the picture-frame window so you can still enjoy a glimpse of the rust-red land. But this place is designed for living outdoors, under the warmth of the southern Italian sun.

This home offers an authentic taste of life in Southern Italy. You'll find Gagliano del Capo's amenities and Saturday market within 200 metres. There are two outdoor terraces and a separate kitchenette here, ideal for preparing alfresco bites. While the second bedroom has a doorless archway up on the mezzanine level, this stylish fusion of old and new wins us over. The Ciolo path leads you to a rocky inlet with a tiny beach, though some may prefer the sands a fifteen-minute drive away.

On the very tip of Italy’s “heel” this apartment sits in the sunny harbour town of Leuca. Sample the seafood restaurants by the water or head out to find a rugged coastline punctuated with secret sandy bays. The apartment is on the top floor of a traditional-style villa with a huge sun trap of a terrace looking out over the harbour. Out here, you can dine, recline and wash sandy feet in the outdoor show after days at the beach. Inside, it’s a little old-fashioned in terms of decor and the kitchen won’t win any awards for modernity, but the sea views from each window are what makes this place stand out.
