If this palatial 1700s palazzo, hidden away in the Franciacorta countryside, doesn't say rest and reset, we don't know what else will. Inside, the fresco-adorned rooms may be a little fussy for some – but who wouldn't be wowed by that private pool and century-old garden? With sprawling verandas and countless reception rooms, this home has hosted a fair few weddings and parties in its time. It's surprisingly family-friendly, too, with a play area and flexibility in the bedrooms for children sharing. Location-wise, you're just a stroll from sleepy Bornato. Or, for more bustle, Brescia, with its ancient piazzas, is a few kilometres away.

The pastel colour palette creates a charming, almost whimsical feel, where you can settle into life by the lake. The checkered sofa is a lovely place to curl up with a glass of Italian red wine, while the kitchen invites you to whip up your favourite pasta dishes. Start your day on the spacious terrace, drinking in the breath-taking views of the lake while sipping your morning coffee. Whip up breakfast in the elegant stone-tiled kitchen then plan how to spend your day. We could easily spend hours in the rooftop pool, lazily floating in the sunshine with a backdrop of exquisite scenery. 

After you’ve dried off in the sun, head into the historic centre of Padenghe and enjoy lunch in a trattoria. Wander the streets with a gelato, or call into cafes for coffee and watch the world go by – there’s no need to rush, you’re in Italy after all. The jewel in Padenghe’s crown is undoubtedly the castle; whether you’re a history buff or you’re just in it for the views of Garda, it’s well worth strolling five minutes up the hill to explore. Further afield, beautiful Sirmione is less than ten miles away. 

However you spend your stay, make sure you spend at least one evening on the terrace with a glass of something local, watching the sun set slowly over the lake. If you’re anything like us, you’d kick yourself for missing it.

Designed by a well-respected 20th-century architect, this two-storey home on the Sirmio peninsula plants you onto sprawling lands that stretch out to a beach on Lake Garda. This apartment sits in the heart of Varenna, a short walk from the picturesque Lake Como. Shops, restaurants, and the train station are also nearby, putting you in a prime position to explore both near and far. While the fuss-free interiors aren't the most exciting, we think this is a practical option for families and friends. The balcony is a lovely spot to relax with a glass of wine – even if it's overlooked a bit by neighbours – and the kitchen is a decent size if you want to prepare meals at home. With the double sofa bed in use, space will be tight, so we think it's best suited for four.

Sharing its outdoor pool with just one other apartment, this modern home sits in large gardens, in a quiet spot overlooking the rolling hills – the blue of Lake Garda just visible across the trees. With lovely lawns, old olive trees and plenty of green all around, it's a comfortable and practical home-from-home. 

Inside, it's a ground floor apartment well suited to family life. Modern in design, its big windows and spacious rooms keep it bright and sociable, with all eyes on the view to the rear. There's a well kitted-out kitchen and a dining table inside, but we think you'll be spending much of your time eating on the covered terrace. 

After breakfast, head to the gated outdoor pool for a morning of swimming and playing on the trampoline, or hop in your car and you'll be by the lakeshore in a little over five minutes. 

From your home, it's a short walk into the village of Soiano del Lago, with its grocery shop and small restaurants, making this the ideal choice for a quiet family holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts. Drive to the nearby beaches for fun at the lake, or spend a day at one of the nearby amusement parks – Gardaland is around half an hour's drive away.

As soon as you approach this lovely home's building, you're greeted with a beautiful pond with a fountain and colourful fish – we felt an air of calm straight away. The garden has an even bigger pond – the shared swimming pool is perfect for cooling off in the Italian heat or simply relax with a book on the lounger.

Inside the apartment, there are characterful exposed beams and terracotta tiled floors. Another stand-out feature of this home is the main bathroom which has Swarovski crystals set in the furniture and on the washbasin – we do love a bit of bling.

Situated a few steps from Spiaggia D'oro and the centre of Desenzano del Garda, it has a fabulous location. If you have kids with you, there's a playground 50 metres away too.

After being occupied by the same family for five generations, this home lay uninhabited for several decades before it was treated to a complete renovation. Today, the thought that this remarkable home lay unappreciated for so long makes us slightly sad.

The views alone are worth a stay here. From the two terraces, you get a sensational panorama of Lake Como, the mountains surrounding the waters and some of the local area's spectacular buildings, like Villa Balbianello. With a pair of loungers and an alfresco dining table, you can pass hours upon hours with this backdrop for company.

Back inside the home, some period features, like the exposed brickwork, have been tastefully retained, while many of the more modern additions are vintage in style, such as the copper bathtub in one of the bedrooms, the tiled flooring and the mighty wooden dining table. The kitchen is as contemporary as they come, however.

The local village of Mezzegra on your doorstep has restaurants, a bakery and a handful of historic churches to wander between. The banks of the lake can also be reached in ten minutes on foot, while Monte Crocione sits behind the property if you're up for a challenge.



Family Heirloom

If you're looking for a home with a view, then they don't get much more awe-inspiring than this. Right on the edge of Lake Como, this sweet apartment offers sweeping vistas across the water and a wonderfully peaceful setting. 

The interior is modern yet welcoming, cloaked in soothing neutral shades. The windows usher in plenty of natural light, and we loved the charming wooden ceilings. However, the jewel in the crown of this home is the outdoor space. Simply wake up and open up the patio doors to step right onto the balcony – it's the perfect place to sip your morning coffee. There's also a terrace with sun loungers where you can admire the sweeping landscapes, and even access to your own tiny beach if you fancy a paddle. 

If you feel like getting out onto the water, then there are a few boat rental companies just a short stroll away. However, if you would prefer to stay on dry land, then there are a few restaurants where you can sip a glass of wine and admire the boats from afar. Plus, the town of Bellagio is just a fifteen-minute car ride away – wander through the cobbled streets, gelato in hand, before taking a stroll through Villa Serbelloni Park.

Located in a quiet spot on the western shores of Lake Garda, this villa offers a relaxing base from which to explore the historical, town of Salò. Close to the lake, a beach and the lovely Isola del Garda. You’ll have your own private spa here thanks to a sauna, Jacuzzi and Turkish bath, plus an outdoor swimming pool and lawned garden outside. If you’re looking for ways to keep the little ones entertained, the playground should do the trick, with a swing and slide for them to play on. When it comes to exploring, we’d recommend taking the bikes out for a cycle by the water.

You’re just a few footsteps from the crystal-clear water of Lake Garda with a stay at this apartment in Desenzano del Garda. Within walking distance, in the town itself, you’ve got a castle, the ruins of Roman villas, pretty old churches and a slice of lakeside beach. Plus, from the quaint little harbour, boats and water taxis leave to the other scenic towns that dot the shore. 

The first thing that grabs you as soon as you step inside is the view from the living area’s big windows. The vista of red-roofed houses leading to the shores of Lake Garda takes pride of place as if it’s a work of art hanging on the wall. Lightwood floors and white walls keep things feeling bright and the glass dining table sits in a particularly sunny corner, surrounded by windows. There’s plenty of room to prep meals in the open kitchen, thanks to a wooden breakfast bar. A little, unfurnished balcony provides a space to step out and breathe in the fresh, lake air.

Located just a short walk from the centre of Florence, this Santa Maria Novella ticks all the important boxes for us, making it a functional base for city exploring. The fully equipped kitchen and large dining table let you enjoy a hearty breakfast before you head into town, and we like that the home gets plenty of natural light – always a nice way to start the day. When you want to explore, you'll find Strozzi Palace close by, as well as Florence Santa Maria Novella station, connecting you to the rest of Tuscany and beyond.

You’ll need to climb stairs to this first-floor home, and there’s no air conditioning here, but step out onto the private terrace and you’ll feel the warm Italian breeze. We defy anyone to look through this home's photos and not feel instantly at ease. It's something to do with the ample amounts of space, cleansing white walls and large arched windows that look out over rooftops and also flood the interior with sunshine.

The design is definitely sparse, although we think there are enough personal touches to ward off accusations of anonymity. The floral-style lampshade in the bedroom is eye-catching and we also like the vintage travel adverts hanging in frames on the wall.

However, don't be surprised if you don't actually spend all too much time in the apartment. The home's position in the Mezzegra region is simply gorgeous, helped by the fact that the banks of Lake Como can be reached in five minutes' walk. Villa del Balbianello takes forty-five minutes to reach on foot, while you catch a ferry to the town of Bellagio in just over an hour.
