Views of Lake Como don't come much better than this – and neither do penthouse locations. You're within walking distance of Fiumelatte for evening meals and the train station (just 300 metres away) for trips to nearby historic Varenna. Rather travel by boat? Hop on the ferry (a three-kilometre drive away) to glitzy Bellagio and beyond. Back home, the main bedroom suite, with its dressing area and Jacuzzi for two, more than delivers. However, it's worth noting that the headspace in the mezzanine second bedroom is low and better suited for children. But for those jaw-dropping views from the private terrace, we can forgive that.

Take in the beautiful views of Lake Como from this home's terraces – perfect for sunset suppers. There are views from this abode's living space, too, awaiting you. If you need to catch up on work, both bedrooms have dressing tables that can double up as a laptop space. But, if you're a group of six, two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room. If that doesn't bother you, then you'll love the location. This home has private access to the Green Way footpath, which leads to Varenna (twenty minutes on foot) and the beach, a three-minute stroll away.

This practical apartment is located in the charming town of Lierna on the banks of Lake Como. It's contemporary, albeit a tad basic, but you can't beat the picturesque views from the private balcony. Head down into the shared garden and you'll find a communal pool ideal for afternoon dips. We think it's a great base from which to explore the region. Not only are a few shops, restaurants, and a small beach within walking distance, but you can also reach Lecco by car and Belaggio by ferry.

In the mountainous peninsula between the two “legs” of Lake Como, this villa sits in splendid isolation. Manicured gardens surround the traditionally ochre-hued villa where towering trees hide secret swings, picnic benches and even a spot for badminton. There’s a patio for dining in the sunshine and here you’ll hear nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong. 

An ivy-covered front and typically green-shuttered windows greet you at the end of a long driveway. Inside, terracotta floors keep things cool underfoot and wooden ceilings are reminiscent of the old world. A huge stone fireplace crowns the main lounge, complete with the villa’s old family crest. There are plenty of seating nooks tucked away in this home to hide with a good book. Chefs will love the traditionally Italian kitchen, which has been upgraded from its farmhouse days with granite worktops, but you can still feels the bones of the old kitchen in the wood-topped hearth (now home to a microwave and working bread oven). 

Dining can be a formal affair in the separate dining room, illuminated by a medieval-looking candelabra, or a casual breakfast just off the kitchen.

In terms of location, you’re secluded away between the mountains, but the shore of Lake Como is a short drive. Head to Bellagio, where cobbled streets lead to the lake shore and water taxis head out onto the water – it’s just a ten-minute drive away.

From the wrought-iron bistro set beneath the pergola, your eyes can feast on a panorama of sparkling Lake Como, flanked by snow-capped mountains as orange-roofed villages tumble down the hillsides. Out here, you’ve got plenty of space to enjoy the view, from the dining table or perhaps lapping up the sun on a lounger. We love the ancient mosaic tiles on the covered veranda.

Inside, the plush sofa is aimed at the French doors, rather than the TV, so you can enjoy the view whatever the weather. A huge archway opens the living room up to the dine-in kitchen, and there’s a traditional wall-press filled with holiday reads for a quiet moment. Bedrooms are calming spaces in soothing neutral palettes and the master benefits from corner windows looking out to the mountains. 

You’re on a street in Argegno's old centre, right on the water. The lakeside swimming pool is a five-minute walk away, along with the ferry stop ready to whisk you across Lake Como to the likes of Bellagio, Menaggio or Varenna. While a little less humble than Madonna's lakeside villa, you can get a slice of the star's lifestyle by staying in this renovated top-floor apartment, with a terrace overlooking the terracotta rooftops of Como city. A romantic spot, with its grey and white scheme, chandeliers and opulent queen-size bed, it makes the perfect northern Italian break for two. It's within easy reach of lakeside restaurants, walking routes and boat trips. Thick stone walls keep it warm in winter and cool in summer, but there’s also air conditioning, so you can always escape the midday heat. Should you ever need a little more action, it’s just an hour’s drive to Milan’s main airports and into the city itself, for shopping, restaurants and unmissable sights like the Duomo.

The main bedroom even finds room for a desk and enjoys access to an en-suite shower room.

When you're not sunbathing and swimming in the lake, explore the surrounding village of Laglio. With slopes full of vineyards and olive groves, and pastel-coloured villas, it's one of the most elegant lakeside locations. But don't take our word for it. George Clooney purchased his nearby eighteenth-century estate back in 2002 and still returns multiple times a year, some two decades later.

We love the sleek interiors of this home, which provides a comfortable stay for a family or group of friends. Just note – as a party of five, two people will draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. Still, it’s a sacrifice we’d be willing to make for this pad’s enviable location. If the views tempt you out for a meander, you’ll find Como at your feet just waiting to be explored.

Located on a picturesque square in the centre of Como, this apartment is a playful mixture of tradition and modernity. You only have to look at the sleek kitchen island sitting underneath wooden ceiling beams, or the stone basin in an otherwise contemporarily styled bathroom to see what we mean.

The stark white walls, large windows and generous amount of space make the interior feel light and airy. However, if opening the shutters isn't quite cooling enough for you, there's always the option of stepping out onto the home's private terrace, which has a corner bench on which to enjoy warm summer evenings.

There are plenty of wine bars and restaurants in the adjoining square and the surrounding streets, but perhaps the most important thing to note is that the southern bank of Lake Como can be reached in barely a minute's walk. From this excellent position, it's so easy to fill your days with boat trips, mountain rambles and dips in the crystalline waters.

Nestled in the heart of Varenna, this apartment oozes elegance with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and views over San Giorgio Square. You’ll need to climb stairs to this first-floor home, and there’s no air conditioning here, but step out onto the private terrace and you’ll feel the warm Italian breeze. Location-wise, you’ll see why this apartment caught our eye. Within walking distance of Lake Como, the sandy shores of Molo di Sotto beach, and a plethora of shops and Italian eateries, there’s plenty to occupy your time here. 

In the Heart of Varenna

Sightseeing is a breeze at this apartment in the heart of Como. Whether you're keen to explore on foot or head out on the water, you couldn't ask for a better position in the town. But aside from the setting, we love how bright, cosy, and comfortable this apartment is. It seamlessly blends the traditional with the modern – think exposed brick fireplace, stained glass windows, and terracotta floors. The cherry on top is the private terrace, where you can sit with a glass of wine and enjoy the evening sunshine.

We love the vistas over Lake Como from this apartment’s Juliet balconies in the living room and bedroom. On a practical note, the living area can get a bit cramped if four guests stay, as two will be sleeping on a sofa bed here. Also, the kitchenette doesn’t have an oven or much food preparation space, so it’s best suited to making snacks and light meals. Luckily, there are a couple of eateries nearby. This home is situated in Carate Urio on the western shore of Lake Como, with lots of residential villas. If you fancy going on a boat trip to explore Lake Como’s other towns, take a ten-minute walk to Urio’s dock.

Modern, bright and beautiful as it is, nothing's going to beat the outdoor area here. With ample seating, including an alfresco dining table under a flowering pergola, looking out over the glistening lake, you can see why this one made our collection. We also like the bathtub facing the door so you can even admire the views from inside. Because of the perched location of this home, you'll have to climb steps up to it, but it'll all be worth it for the breathtaking panorama of Lake Como. If you’ve ever fleetingly imagined another life for yourself – drinking espresso in your stylish Italian apartment as the sun streams in through the tall windows, maybe – then welcome to your Como abode. Framed by wooden shutters, the wonderful huge windows define every room, letting light dapple over the beautiful parquet floor. Period and contemporary pieces blend to give this home its tasteful yet welcoming feel – see the wooden dining table with accompanying designer chairs. And with air conditioning and an in-home washing machine, there’s no compromise on functionality. The huge living space is great for hanging out after a day of sightseeing, and we love the super squishy corner sofa. Crucially, the home is right in the heart of the pedestrian part of the city. You're right next to Palazzo Garibaldi, and plenty of restaurants, shops, bars. It's a short walk to the waterfront promenade too – we've taken longer to polish off a gelato.

This apartment is New-York-style loft living in the centre of Como. It’s brimming with inspiration for creative types, from the picturesque surroundings of Lake Como (easily explored by water taxi) to the architecturally marvellous interior. The open bathroom won’t be for everyone – with a huge rainfall shower in the centre of the open loft and a spa-like bath enclosed. But there’s a standard shower room with a door for those who prefer privacy. It feels like an old warehouse in the vast, open living space with a sleek chrome kitchen, banquet-sized dining table and desks to work remotely. Art and books take centre stage, strewn about the room with a TV on the floor like an afterthought. 

A Composition in Concrete

Overlooking Lake Como, this three-storey villa is conveniently located a fifteen-minute walk from the shops and restaurants of charming Bellagio. It was the 1,500 square metre garden that attracted us to this home – just look at those views from the hot tub. What's more, the swimming pool is all yours, and the terrace is the perfect setting for alfresco feasts. Although there's a no-frills approach to the interior, the place is equipped with everything you'll need for a stress-free holiday, and the ground floor bedrooms mean it's suitable for all the family.
