Between the two southern branches of Lake Como, this terracotta-roofed villa is set around an ivy-dappled courtyard. A huge, free-form swimming pool takes pride of place in the grounds and wandering across perfectly manicured lawns (or taking the golf buggy) sees you at tennis courts, a football pitch and secret seating areas. We absolutely love the loggia-style eating area, beneath wooden rafters with an old water pump and wood-burning fireplace. Or, choose to dine beneath the ivy on the veranda. Did we mention there’s a heliport?

Inside, you’ll find the classic Italian dark-wood furniture and rooms livened up with Moroccan rugs and maritime paraphernalia on the walls. There are several sofa-filled snugs to hide away in, and one huge lounge with pretty 17th-century-style windows for the whole group to socialise in. One spot we found particularly intriguing was the booth-like dining set around the old hearth with its cauldron still intact. 

In terms of location, you’re a half-hour drive from the beautiful town of Bellagio on Lake Como, and twenty minutes from Lecco where boats leave to cross the lake.

Nestled in the heart of Varenna, this apartment oozes elegance with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and views over San Giorgio Square. You’ll need to climb stairs to this first-floor home, and there’s no air conditioning here, but step out onto the private terrace and you’ll feel the warm Italian breeze. Location-wise, you’ll see why this apartment caught our eye. Within walking distance of Lake Como, the sandy shores of Molo di Sotto beach, and a plethora of shops and Italian eateries, there’s plenty to occupy your time here.

This practical apartment is located in the charming town of Lierna on the banks of Lake Como. It's contemporary, albeit a tad basic, but you can't beat the picturesque views from the private balcony. Head down into the shared garden and you'll find a communal pool ideal for afternoon dips. We think it's a great base from which to explore the region. Not only are a few shops, restaurants, and a small beach within walking distance, but you can also reach Lecco by car and Belaggio by ferry.

Now that's what we call a view. Located in the charming town of Nesso, this apartment offers breathtaking views of Lake Como. You can admire the panoramas from the balcony, or watch the waves roll in while swimming in the shared pool. Vistas aside, the apartment is sleek and contemporary. There's a sofa bed for a third guest, but we think it would be a better fit for two. In terms of location, Como is twenty minutes away, making it an excellent starting point for exploring the region.

Petite and pretty, you'll find this home right on the edge of Lake Como, near the centre of Tremezzo. It's ideal for couples or very small families who are looking for some peace and quiet to enjoy this idyllic corner of Italy. 

The kitchen is ready for you to whip up some delicious meals, or simply arrange some antipasti, depending on what you feel like. Mix an Aperol Spritz and head out to the patio to enjoy your apperitif in the fresh air with a view of the lake – your host will even provide comfortable deckchairs and tables. If you need to catch up on emails then there's a dedicated workspace, and at the end of the day you'll love curling up in the perfect pink bedroom. 

You can walk to the centre of Tremezzo and the famous Villa Carlotta in only eight minutes from here, and you're also close to Scalo di Villa Carlotta ferry landing, which can take you around the lake to several points of interest. Plus, the city centre of Como is around a forty-minute drive away – visit the cathedral and wander along the promenade before you hop on the funicular railway for an excellent view.

There's nothing better than sitting around the dining table, sipping wine, nibbling on antipasti and watching the water ebb and flow out the window. This breathtaking former quarryman's cottage offers you the ultimate escape. It's only accessible from the water so you're free to get on with the important business of relaxing. Alternatively, take inspiration from its owner, renowned author and journalist Guiseppe Guin, and crack on with that book you've always had inside you, free from the noise and distractions of everyday life.

Inside, exposed stone walls lined with leather-bound books, an antique stove, and a kitchen carved from granite make the home feel like a place out of time. With its lakeside setting on a wooded hillside, there's definitely a 'Lord of the Rings' vibe about it.

The views of Lake Como from this home are simply gorgeous – we could sit on the balcony here gazing out over the gently rippling water to the mountains for hours. You can enjoy the incredible vistas from the terrace too, where you can relax on the sun loungers or dine alfresco. Whip up some tortelli di zucca in the sleek, dove grey kitchen for dinner. On chilly evenings gather around the fire or get some rest in the stylish bedrooms with their ornate wallpaper. 

Situated in Argegno, there are a range of eateries within a five-minute walk. Further afield, the alpine city of Lecco, with its splendid Basilica di San Nicolò, is eleven minutes in the car. Or walk the trails of the stunning Monte Barro Regional Park, a sixteen-minute drive from this lovely home.

This place is ideal for a family – bedroom two is more suitable for the kids as it has a bunk bed.

Because of the perched location of this home, you'll have to climb steps up to it, but it'll all be worth it for the breathtaking panorama of Lake Como. Beautiful Lake Como is just 100 metres from this home, while other attractions nearby include the pretty Giardini del Tempio Voltiano with its museum, just over a five-minute walk away. Or head to Como Cathedral and Basilica di San Fedele – both are around five minutes on foot. There are a variety of cafés and restaurants for lunch on your doorstep, or head back to this elegant apartment. 

Open up the French doors to the Juliet balcony and take a seat on the comfy sofa to rest your feet for a while. We love the living room with its polished wood floors and vases of cream flowers. Whip up an insalata caprese in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table next to the wall adorned with giant cutlery. This home is the perfect retreat for a couple or solo traveller looking for easy access to the lake.

We defy anyone to look through this home's photos and not feel instantly at ease. It's something to do with the ample amounts of space, cleansing white walls and large arched windows that look out over rooftops and also flood the interior with sunshine.

The design is definitely sparse, although we think there are enough personal touches to ward off accusations of anonymity. The floral-style lampshade in the bedroom is eye-catching and we also like the vintage travel adverts hanging in frames on the wall.

However, don't be surprised if you don't actually spend all too much time in the apartment. The home's position in the Mezzegra region is simply gorgeous, helped by the fact that the banks of Lake Como can be reached in five minutes' walk. Villa del Balbianello takes forty-five minutes to reach on foot, while you catch a ferry to the town of Bellagio in just over an hour.

White Negroni

With its Cubist-inspired interiors and signature furniture pieces, this home could be plucked straight from the pages of an interiors glossy. It's an impressive space, with green views of the mountains from the small but charming balcony. The only slight let down is the double sofa bed in the second bedroom – fine for a short stay, but it won't suit everyone. However, the two separate bathrooms and desk will be handy, as will the private garage parking should you plan to drive. Not that you'll need to. The Old Town, bustling with bakeries, cafes and restaurants, is just a stroll away.

Perched by Lake Como, this villa caught our eye thanks to its beautiful surroundings – best enjoyed from the infinity pool or terrace. Inside, sliding doors connect the open living space to the outdoor area, where you'll find sun loungers, a dining table, and a barbecue. Spread over four floors with an internal lift, there's also a fully equipped home gym, complete with a sauna and spa shower. Upstairs, two of the bedrooms benefit from sweeping lake views, and there's a study area for those working remotely. And, when you're ready to explore, it's just a short drive from the city of Como – the villa also comes with garage parking.

If you're looking for a home with a view, then they don't get much more awe-inspiring than this. Right on the edge of Lake Como, this sweet apartment offers sweeping vistas across the water and a wonderfully peaceful setting. 

The interior is modern yet welcoming, cloaked in soothing neutral shades. The windows usher in plenty of natural light, and we loved the charming wooden ceilings. However, the jewel in the crown of this home is the outdoor space. Simply wake up and open up the patio doors to step right onto the balcony – it's the perfect place to sip your morning coffee. There's also a terrace with sun loungers where you can admire the sweeping landscapes, and even access to your own tiny beach if you fancy a paddle. 

If you feel like getting out onto the water, then there are a few boat rental companies just a short stroll away. However, if you would prefer to stay on dry land, then there are a few restaurants where you can sip a glass of wine and admire the boats from afar. Plus, the town of Bellagio is just a fifteen-minute car ride away – wander through the cobbled streets, gelato in hand, before taking a stroll through Villa Serbelloni Park.

With its feet right on the banks of Lake Como, this modern and fuss-free apartment is as close to the water you can get. Your mornings will begin on the balcony, with a cappuccino and flaky pastry, or on the shingle of your private beach to watch boats cut through the gentle waves.

Pick the comfiest spot on the sofa or pull up a chair at the dining table – the minimalist furnishings have been carefully positioned to ensure you won’t miss a second of the stunning vistas. 

If you feel like exploring, charming Bellagio is a twenty-three-minute drive away. Weave through the tangle of cobbled streets, dipping in and out of artisanal boutiques before stopping for an Aperol in waterfront bars to catch the sunset.

Treat yourself to a stylish stay at this recently renovated one-bedroom apartment. Just five minutes from the lake, this home offers you the chance to experience the glitz and glamour of Lake Como without necessarily requiring a bank balance with as many zeros as George Clooney's (whose own vast lakeside villa is approximately 20km away).

Cute and compact, with comfortable seating, stylish dining and culinary creativity all possible – this Como flat is the complete couple's package. Large windows look out over the neighbourhood, while French doors offer direct access to a private balcony. Finally, a cosy bedroom lies just off the main living space, with a chic contemporary bathroom occupying the opposite corner.

Head downstairs, and you can reach the cafe-lined Piazza del Duomo and Como's gothic cathedral in a little under ten minutes on foot, while the lake's shimmering waters are no more than a kilometre from your front door. For jaw-dropping vistas, drive a few kilometres out of town and take the Brunate funicular 500m to the top. Alternatively, enjoy a whole new perspective from the water, with boats waiting to whisk you off to other shoreside settlements from the nearby ferry terminal.

We love the vistas over Lake Como from this apartment’s Juliet balconies in the living room and bedroom. On a practical note, the living area can get a bit cramped if four guests stay, as two will be sleeping on a sofa bed here. Also, the kitchenette doesn’t have an oven or much food preparation space, so it’s best suited to making snacks and light meals. Luckily, there are a couple of eateries nearby. This home is situated in Carate Urio on the western shore of Lake Como, with lots of residential villas. If you fancy going on a boat trip to explore Lake Como’s other towns, take a ten-minute walk to Urio’s dock.

While a little less humble than Madonna's lakeside villa, you can get a slice of the star's lifestyle by staying in this renovated top-floor apartment, with a terrace overlooking the terracotta rooftops of Como city. A romantic spot, with its grey and white scheme, chandeliers and opulent queen-size bed, it makes the perfect northern Italian break for two. It's within easy reach of lakeside restaurants, walking routes and boat trips. Thick stone walls keep it warm in winter and cool in summer, but there’s also air conditioning, so you can always escape the midday heat. Should you ever need a little more action, it’s just an hour’s drive to Milan’s main airports and into the city itself, for shopping, restaurants and unmissable sights like the Duomo.

It's fair to say that Lake Como isn't exactly short of awe-inspiring views, but the panorama enjoyed from this home's terrace is nothing short of sensational. Thanks to the prime position six hundred metres above the banks, guests are treated to a sweeping vista of the sparkling lake, verdant hillside, clusters of villages and a huge expanse of sky.

It says a lot about this home — a tower dating back to the end of the eighteenth century — that this isn't the only standout feature. Staying outside, there's a long swimming pool and a spa tub, plus plenty of loungers for soaking up the sunshine. If the weather's kind — which it all too often is here — there's no excuse not to fire up the barbecue and serve up something grilled to perfection for dinner.

Inside, there's certainly a rustic feel to the design, thanks to the wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiles underfoot, but there are plenty of modern amenities to be found, too. There's also a pool table if you want to challenge a family member or friend.

The surrounding medieval village of Palanzo is as authentic as you could wish for, all narrow alleys, stone houses and even a small restaurant. The lake itself can be reached in around fifteen minutes' drive, while the city of Como takes half an hour.

Your host can provide free baby equipment and pets are welcome, making it an ideal choice for families. While there is the potential for some noise from other residents of the building, you'll have space to sit outside with an alfresco meal or drink and look out toward the glittering Lake Lugano. We think you'll want a car here for getting the most out of your stay, whether it's exploring the shops and fantastic restaurants or parking up and taking a scenic walk by the water.
