If you’ve ever fleetingly imagined another life for yourself – drinking espresso in your stylish Italian apartment as the sun streams in through the tall windows, maybe – then welcome to your Como abode. Framed by wooden shutters, the wonderful huge windows define every room, letting light dapple over the beautiful parquet floor. Period and contemporary pieces blend to give this home its tasteful yet welcoming feel – see the wooden dining table with accompanying designer chairs. And with air conditioning and an in-home washing machine, there’s no compromise on functionality. The huge living space is great for hanging out after a day of sightseeing, and we love the super squishy corner sofa. Crucially, the home is right in the heart of the pedestrian part of the city. You're right next to Palazzo Garibaldi, and plenty of restaurants, shops, bars. It's a short walk to the waterfront promenade too – we've taken longer to polish off a gelato.

It's just a short drive to Como, which makes it ideal for those who want to be close to the action without sacrificing peace and quiet. Pull up a chair and tuck into dinner in the dining room (though note the kitchen is a bit small) or retreat to one of the three comfortable bedrooms for a little R&R. Or head to Como Cathedral and Basilica di San Fedele – both are around five minutes on foot. Once an ice house, the place has been transformed into a cosy apartment – we loved the mezzanine level with frosted glass floor and the comfy crescent sofa that complements the curves of the ancient walls. There’s a kitchenette for whipping up quick snacks, but if you’ve got a hankering for hearty Lombardy fare, you’re only footsteps from traditional osterie. 

Spend afternoons navigating Como’s narrow cobbled streets, nipping in and out of artisanal boutiques before finding a spot by the water with an aperitvo. If you’re keen to explore further afield, catch the ferry to Bellagio – it’ll take around forty-four minutes – and stroll around the peaceful Villa Melzi gardens.

Located on a picturesque square in the centre of Como, this apartment is a playful mixture of tradition and modernity. You only have to look at the sleek kitchen island sitting underneath wooden ceiling beams, or the stone basin in an otherwise contemporarily styled bathroom to see what we mean.

The stark white walls, large windows and generous amount of space make the interior feel light and airy. However, if opening the shutters isn't quite cooling enough for you, there's always the option of stepping out onto the home's private terrace, which has a corner bench on which to enjoy warm summer evenings.

There are plenty of wine bars and restaurants in the adjoining square and the surrounding streets, but perhaps the most important thing to note is that the southern bank of Lake Como can be reached in barely a minute's walk. From this excellent position, it's so easy to fill your days with boat trips, mountain rambles and dips in the crystalline waters.

Set in the village of Brunate, this home offers wonderful views of Lake Como from its large terrace. Inside this apartment is impressive too with its high ceilings in the open-plan living space – there’s a second living area on the mezzanine too. Location-wise, there are a variety of local eateries and artisan shops or take a ride over to the city of Como where you’ll find an array of attractions. Or you can immerse yourself in nature with the many hiking trails through the forests here.

One glance at those Lake Como views and you'll fall in love with this cosy and romantic flat. There's nothing better than sitting around the dining table, sipping wine, nibbling on antipasti and watching the water ebb and flow out the window. Later on, snuggle up on the cushy sofas with a book or get comfortable in the bedrooms, resting up for an adventure-filled day. The design is a delightful mishmash of mid-century modern, classic Italian character and clean, contemporary style. Although it's compact, the cheery yellow kitchen is sure to put a smile on your face as you're rustling up breakfast, and with two showers, you won't have to worry about queuing in the mornings.

Location-wise, Carate Urio has oodles of old-world charm and an authentic, local atmosphere. Enjoy a cappuccino right by the water, then sprawl out on the small beach for a spot of sunbathing and swimming. In the evenings, stroll along the steeped, winding lanes in the village before grabbing a bite to eat at the traditional restaurants. And when you fancy exploring further afield, catch the ferry from Urio's dock (only a short walk away) to travel to Como.

This bright and modern studio situated in the picturesque town of Lugano is a great place for a couple or a solo traveller to base themselves while they make the most of all that this beautiful Italian-speaking region of Switzerland has to offer. 

While the studio is compact in size, it has all the comforts to make your time a relaxing one – not to mention all the shared facilities which are definitely an added perk. Arrive to be greeted by a light-filled open-plan space, with a huge sofa which easily transforms into a plush double bed. There’s also a dining table for two, perfect for those romantic suppers which you’ll be able to easily rustle up in the well-equipped kitchen area. In case you don’t feel like cooking, there’s also a restaurant and bar downstairs. Later you may want to step outside onto the balcony and share some wine – this is also a great spot for a morning coffee with a view over the mountains. 

Outside you’ll be close to the vibrant Piazza Della Riforma, the heart of the city, which you can reach in twenty minutes by walking – the same amount of time it'll take you to get to the shores of the lake. You’ll also find a charming local farmers’ market offering the best fresh produce. For business travellers, the apartment is just an eleven-minute walk from the Centro Esposizioni Lugano exhibition centre and an eighteen-minute walk from the Palazzo Dei Congressi Lugano.

We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

The open bathroom won’t be for everyone – with a huge rainfall shower in the centre of the open loft and a spa-like bath enclosed. But there’s a standard shower room with a door for those who prefer privacy. It feels like an old warehouse in the vast, open living space with a sleek chrome kitchen, banquet-sized dining table and desks to work remotely. Art and books take centre stage, strewn about the room with a TV on the floor like an afterthought.
