There’s no need to hire a car for a stay in this apartment in Milan’s old town – most of the must-see sights can be reached on foot and there’s a Metro station a minute’s walk away. Located on the top floor of a historical building, you’re away from the hustle and bustle of the streets below so it’s surprisingly quiet for a city centre pad. The minimalist decor here won’t be to everyone’s taste, but we love the mix of white walls and bold window frames. And the large roof terrace is the perfect place to enjoy an aperitivo before heading out for dinner at one of the many local restaurants.

The enviable central spot does mean there’s the potential for some street noise, but from the fourth floor, we don’t think it should cause too much bother and it’s a small price to pay for the convenience of your location. With many key sights within walking distance and Italian eateries and shops on your doorstep, you’ll be living like a local in no time.

There are so many good things about Sailor’s Solace that it’s hard to know where to start. We adore the living room, a place that feels down-to-earth and yet special at the same time – especially when it fills with sunlight. It’s hard not to flop into the hammock as soon as you see it, and even harder to peel yourself away. At this unique home, it's tempting just to stay in, passing the evening on the terrace with a Campari for company.

But when in Milan, there's much to see. And here, you’re close enough to most of the major attractions to walk (and if you weren’t, there’s a station nearby). Start with the medieval Sforzesco Castle, just a ten-minute walk away. The 15th-century structure sits on an expanse of beautifully-manicured gardens – there's even an aquarium, ideal if you're travelling with children. 

From here, wind your way towards the Duomo, stopping for a coffee and cannoli somewhere along the way. The cathedral is like nothing else you've ever seen, constructed from elegant pink marble.

This contemporary studio apartment in the upscale Quadrilatero Della Moda neighbourhood is perfect for a couple or solo traveller. The apartment's location is ideal for exploring the vibrant city of Milan, with easy access to Teatro alla Scala, Duomo di Milano, and the shopping street, Via della Spiga. Although the apartment is compact and there is no kitchen on offer here, it provides a comfortable base to relax between adventures – the balcony is a big check in our books, too. On the edge of Brera and Garibaldi, Artemis is wonderfully placed for both the nightlife that fills the area, and for getting to other parts of the city. The flat has a sense of individuality to it – the design is sophisticated, with lots of beautiful objects that elevate it beyond what you might reasonably expect from a place of its size. It’s all fairly valuable, so for that reason the host, Rita, would prefer to rent to adults, or at least not young children.

All but a five-minute walk to the Corso Venezia – part of the city's upscale Quadrilatero della moda shopping district – this enviable apartment sits right at the heart of the fashion hubbub. Locally, the surrounding area is lovely, benefitting from calm squares, grand architectural statements, and the historic centre is easy to get to on foot – the Duomo di Milano is a twenty-minute stroll away. Back home, you'll find a bright and roomy living space with light neutral tones, soft thoughtful furnishings, chic replica prints and a stylish Castiglioni lamp. The kitchen is colourful and uplifting, with pops of red, plenty of sunlight coming in through the window and a charming dining spot to enjoy breakfast while planning out the day's trips. The bedrooms have their own personalities, with a children's bunk-bed room that will quickly put the kids at ease.

For a fuss-free stay in the heart of Milan, look no further than this apartment. Located in the buzzing San Marco district, you'll be close to the Duomo (a twenty-minute stroll), Pinacoteca di Brera (eight minutes on foot), and the shops and cafes on Corso Garibaldi (only moments away). It's not the biggest apartment, nor the brightest, but it has all you'll need – a compact kitchen, a cosy bedroom, and speedy wi-fi if you're working from home. There's also a sofa bed for guests three and four, though we think it's a better fit for two.

If you’re in search of a well-connected city stay, this apartment delivers a great solution. Located on Corso Garibaldi, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to cute Italian cafes, shops and restaurants. It’s also within easy reach of Parco Sempione and you’ll find the public transport ensures quick links with the rest of Milan. It’s worth noting the apartment is basic, but it’s ideal for couples or solo travellers with the handy addition of a sofa bed for one guest in the living room.

Art museums, designer shops, fantastic restaurants – Milan's Brera neighbourhood is the place to be if you love the finer things in life. It's where you'll find this no-frills apartment, situated just a short walk from tram stops and a metro station. While two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, we don't think you'll have to compromise on space. There are desks in each bedroom if you plan to work from home, a sleek kitchen if you fancy rustling up dinner, and even a terrace where you can enjoy an alfresco aperitif.

Empatia goes to show how much you can do, even with a small space. The flat’s very bright, and when you’re inside, it’s clear how much work Marta’s put into the place – she designed it all herself. While there are bright colours all over the place, they’re set against fairly neutral backgrounds, so never feel overwhelming. We particularly like the creativity shown with the balcony – repurposing the space like that takes a fair amount of imagination and it pays off.

With its parquet floors, contemporary furnishings and French doors letting plenty of light shine in, there’s a luminous elegance to this pared-back yet chic home. 

Kick back on the inviting sofa with your morning espresso and a good book, or better yet, step out onto the private balcony for an alfresco breakfast framed by your street’s tall trees. Dinner time calls for celebratory Italian feasts around the dining table, followed by a bubble bath and a peaceful night’s sleep in the comfortable bedrooms. 

When it’s time for some sightseeing, enjoy some of the city’s best shopping right on your doorstep, or walk just fifteen minutes to gaze up at the beautiful Duomo di Milano. Walking through central Milan is not something we’d recommend doing in a hurry. You’ll constantly be stopping to admire the ornate architecture, ancient monuments, and some of the most impressive cathedrals in the world. Seven minutes from this city apartment, the pink marble Duomo di Milano awaits. And en route, you’ll pass more awe-inspiring sights such as the Teatro alla Scala and Manzoni House, both just two minutes from home. Now, where were we meant to be going again?

When you return after a long day exploring your magnificent surroundings, you’ll be greeted by a grand lobby. Strut upstairs via a red carpet set over glossy marble floors, with a rose-gold chandelier hanging above. As if you didn’t already feel like a VIP, your host can arrange for a private chef, flower deliveries, city tours, and drivers – all you have to do is ask.

In your apartment, glossy floors continue, but this time in elegant hardwood. Modern interiors dominate the space, with a plush corner sofa and glass dining table setting the 21st-century tone. We love the quirky use of red as the highlight colour in this otherwise understated palette. Cherry-red breakfast stools, wall prints, and a coffee machine harmonise in the kitchen – just in time for an espresso martini.

Ossola Marble

What this studio flat lacks in size, it more than makes up for in personality. We were wowed by the sheer joyfulness of the space, with its bright pastels, quirky decorations and fun pink geometric floors. It's whimsical, bright and despite the tiny thumbprint, it feels surprisingly breezy. Pull up a stool and enjoy an espresso at the breakfast bar – it can double as a workspace if you're in town on business – or snuggle up in the cosy bed with a good book after a busy day sightseeing. You won't be hosting dinner parties, but that's not what this flat is for – instead, it's an excellent base from which to explore the city. You're smack-dab in Chinatown, where Chinese lanterns hang above the streets and patrons spill out of dim-sum restaurants and traditional tea shops. But don't worry, there's plenty of Italian fare to be found, especially if you make your way towards artsy Brera and the Centro Storico. Twenty minutes on foot are the leafy gardens of Parco Sempione and Castello Sforzesco – home to artwork by da Vinci and Michelangelo – and though it's a little further, you can walk to the Duomo in thirty-five minutes or hop on the tram, instead.

Only a few minutes away from Centrale, Pastel Playground is well-connected to all parts of Milan and beyond. Considering the central location, this split-level home is a little oasis of tranquillity, which you’ll especially appreciate after a day of exploration. The lower level has a bright hangout spot with great natural light just by the stairs, but that’s not even the best part. The upstairs kitchen which transitions into a glasshouse dining room (and then a rooftop terrace) is quite the experience on its own. A welcoming atmosphere like this is hard to find.

You’ll be surrounded by chic shopping streets in the middle of Brera, just two minutes down the street from the beautiful art gallery Pinacoteca di Brera. You can easily walk to the Duomo di Milano, just fourteen minutes away, or take the twelve-minute saunter to sprawling Parco Sempione. Back at home, you’ll be neatly tucked under the eaves, with characterful exposed wooden beams and bright skylights. The open-plan living area makes the most of the small space, and it’s filled to the brim with charm – the wood kitchen, ornamental fireplace and pops of red that adorn the walls and furniture. The playful library wallpaper and armchair make a good nook for reading, while the bedroom is especially inviting after a long day of exploring on your feet. Sink into the comfortable sheets, and sleep well to recharge for tomorrow.

This apartment is perfect for a city break in Milan. Moments from buzzing nightlife and trendy restaurants, you couldn't ask for a better neighbourhood to base yourself in. Many cultural hotspots, including the Duomo, are within walking distance, while nearby metros and trams make sightseeing further afield a breeze. The design inside is contemporary and cool – think sleek finishes, chrome-coloured walls, and iconic Gaetano Pesce Up chairs. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, and the kitchen is compact, but all in all, it's a great option for shorter trips.

Close to the metro, museums, and many delicious eateries, this apartment gets full marks for its location. It's on the cusp of the trendy Brera district, yet only a twenty-minute walk from landmarks like the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. We love the amount of space on offer inside. The living area is bathed in sunlight and has plenty of room to rest weary feet, though the kitchen is compact. Having two en-suite bathrooms is another bonus – perfect for those wanting privacy.

This is a delightful little apartment in the shadow of the Sforzesco Castle. The sprawling greenery of Sempione Park is right on your doorstep and the Duomo, Royal Palace and Teatro alla Scala are all within a fifteen-minute walk. We love the apartment’s terrace, which is home to all sorts of pot plants and cacti, and a table and chairs for a cold glass of something (there's a dedicated wine fridge inside). The designer sofas and curated collection of coffee table books in the living room are everything you’d expect in Italy’s capital of style. But it’s the ceiling that draws the eye – a slant of white-washed wood beams adding a delightfully rustic touch, and lending itself to make-shift books shelves in every available nook and cranny. Despite the proximity to both the castle and the Brera district (home to cafés, restaurants and luxury fashion boutiques), this place is in a residential block, so you’re guaranteed a little peace and quiet.

Set on Milan's famous Viale Luigi Majno, just five minutes from the beautiful Giardini Indro Montanelli and the conveniently located Palestro metro station right on your doorstep, it's perfectly suited for those after a quintessentially Italian stay in the heart of the city.

The apartment is decorated in a typical Milanese style, with antique furnishings, teeming bookshelves and elegant pieces of fine art, creating an old-world interior with heaps of character. Take it easy in the living space – perhaps you'll flop down on the sofa with a coffee table read, or pull up a bistro-style chair at the dining table, mapping out the day's agenda as you slurp a cappuccino. 

Elsewhere, you'll find a grand home office space for those keeping one eye on work, and two comfortable double bedrooms with navy blue-painted walls and sumptuous silk bedding. Stop by the beautiful Duomo cathedral, or head to the Royal Palace – reachable by foot in twenty-one minutes. Or, why not treat yourself to a day of shopping at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade? 

On quiet or rainy days, curl up on the sofa with a good book, and enjoy the soft breeze through the French doors leading out onto the terrace. On a dry evening, we would love nothing more than to dine alfresco surrounded by the wild and fragrant gardens, catching our final glimpse of the Madonnina. 

Terrazza Milano

In Milan's trendy Garibaldi district sits this functional home that's ideal for two couples or a family. While relatively simple, the dashes of colour give the interior a bit of personality, and the large windows light up the space. Guests need to let the host know an exact arrival time so keys can be delivered, so check-in isn't the most convenient here – that said, the host is always on hand should you need any help during your stay. And with the home's central location, it's easy to start exploring here.

Rococo Meditations

Close to all the action in central Milan, this apartment is ideal if sightseeing is your top priority. You'll be right around the corner from the Pinacoteca di Brera gallery and fifteen minutes on foot from the Duomo. Brera's upscale shops, trendy restaurants, and vibrant nightlife are at your fingertips, too – fitting, as the kitchen back home lacks an oven. The double living room offers plenty of space to unwind, though four of the six guests will sleep on sofa beds. With that in mind, we think it's best for short trips and guests keen to spend all their time exploring.

Brera Buzz

What it may lack in flamboyance, Matcha Latte makes up for in comfort. You can make use of all the services you’d normally expect from any swanky hotel – an all-hours reception, daily cleaning, room service – but you still have the independence that comes with a flat and a full (not to mention designer) kitchen. There are bikes to rent, and a nearby metro station, but the place is so central that you probably won’t need them much – everywhere is reachable on foot.


Matcha Latte

The location of Maestro d’Argento, about as central as it gets in Milan, would be enough to go on by itself, but luckily Laura and her team haven’t stopped there. Everything in the flat is pretty high-end, quality that manifests itself in the comfortable furniture and the serious kitchen. It’s not especially jazzy when it comes to design, but that’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world, particularly for longer stays.


Maestro d'Argento

The terrace, along with the vast windows, helps counter some smaller issues with Bredbeddle. As a whole, it’s a lovely flat – the white walls and brilliant light give it a sense of space and calm. As you step onto the balcony, it’s as if you’re no longer in the city, so intense is the green that greets you on all sides. You are, however, very much in the middle of the city, and there are lots of good places to eat nearby, which is important given that the kitchen is the biggest letdown in the place. It’s very small, and you wouldn’t want to do more than heating up a pot there.

Sleek and elegant, this Milanese apartment is the perfect choice for a couple’s getaway. Sure, the lift only takes you part of the way up to this fifth-floor pad, but the remaining stairs are worth the effort. Step through the door and you’ll be drawn to the private terrace –  a bonus being this high up, just mind your head on those beautiful beams and sloping ceilings as you make a beeline for the sunny spot. Set on the bustling Corso Garibaldi, Bumblebee is right in the heart of the evening action - you’ll soon get caught up in the crowds of Milanese setting out for their aperitivo. The apartment is a comfortable - if slightly functional - space, with a funky design and a nice mix of old and new. This would be a great place for those who are after an experience more akin to a hotel, as there are several other apartments from the same host in the building.

Not only does the apartment sit on the seventh floor of the Galleria del Corso shopping arcade, but there's an impressive view to be had out through the windows of the iconic Duomo standing tall among the city rooftops. 

Rather fittingly for such a prestigious location, the interior is luxurious in style, with a wealth of wooden floors, mid-century furnishings and chic lighting. The svelte grey bathroom wouldn't look out of place in some of the city's most covetable hotels, while the kitchen has everything you need in case you want to take a night off from the local restaurants.

As well as a huge range of shops that sit a few floors beneath the home, there's an even larger collection in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, only six minutes' walk away. The Piazza del Duomo sits the same amount of time away, as does the Royal Palace.
