The Botanical Garden of Rome, the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica and the Ponte Sisto are a short walk away. You'll also find plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. So that's the location – what about the apartment? Well, first of all, there's a courtyard garden, perfect for a glass of wine after all that sightseeing. We also love that the main bedroom opens out onto the patio and that both bedrooms are en-suite. The second bedroom has a desk, too, if you need to catch up on emails while in Rome. Once owned by famous painter Albert Jill, this apartment lies in the heart of Rome. The decor is a bit dated and children and toddlers aren't permitted, but we think friends or families with older children will settle right in. The wi-fi isn't the strongest in all rooms so it's perhaps not the best for remote working, but Jill's unique art adorns the walls and the location is wonderful. You'll be on a quiet cobblestone street, but you may still hear some non-disruptive outside noise from the city. Within walking distance, you'll find an array of shops, restaurants, and attractions like the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, with public transport nearby for getting around.

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

With that in mind, this studio apartment is pretty convenient, at less than a minute away. But if you want to keep busy rather than relaxing with a glass of chianti, you’ll find palaces, museums, and statues all around – such as the Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, two minutes away. However, we feel that this home is somewhat of a landmark itself. As you step inside, you can help but be taken aback by the striking timber ceiling. These thick, rustic beams ooze old-world Italy, transporting you back in time. But with modern twists from minimalist furniture and quirky artworks, there’s an elegant clash of eras which makes this studio feel unique. We love the luxe touches like the marble kitchen sink and bathroom, although your host can provide an even better VIP experience. After being picked up by your private driver from the airport, you might fancy taking up their offer of a wine tasting tour or ride on a classic Vespa.

You’ll find this charming apartment on the narrow, atmospheric Via dei Coronari (officially one of the world’s ten most beautiful streets), right in Rome’s historic centre. It’s just a two-minute stroll to buzzing Piazza Navona where cafés and restaurants spill out onto to pavement and ancient fountains still trickle away. Just across the River Tiber, a fifteen-minute walk takes you to the endless museums and Sistine Chapel at The Vatican. Housed in a building dating back to the 1500s, this apartment still radiates old-world charm which can immediately be felt by the 19th-century aedicule at the entrance. The wooden coffered ceiling and herringbone floor harks back to a bygone age and gilded mirrors and antique furnishings complete the feeling that you’ve stepped into an opulent home in the 19th century. Though it may seem like you’re staying in a museum, the practicalities have been thought of as well, with a full kitchen for your morning espresso, and comfy sofas around the flatscreen TV in the lounge.

Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

This apartment sits within a former palace on one of central Rome’s ancient streets. A short walk away (350 metres), you’ll find Castel Sant’Angelo and it’s just 750 metres from the endless museums of The Vatican. It’s split across two levels and, upon entering, you’ll be greeted with a lavish living room with picture-perfect views. The second bedroom features a sofa bed, but its access to a private terrace with views of Castel Sant’Angelo is a definite highlight – perfect for enjoying sunset meals and celebratory glasses if Italian wine.

A vineyard view isn’t what you expect from an apartment in the heart of Rome, but that’s what you get at this home. The study (or second bedroom) overlooks the vines of Rome’s Botanic Gardens, as though you’re in Tuscany or Chianti rather than the hip suburb of Trastevere. Bars and local trattoria fills the buzzing streets, but this apartment is a haven of calm amidst it all. The interior is a modern medley of soft green and grey, while the exterior boasts the traditional wooden shutters of medieval Italy. Big, arched doors in the master bedroom open up to a private terrace, dappled with greenery and set up with a couple of deckchairs and a drinks table. There’s also a terrace off the living room, with dining for four – perfect for an aperitivo before hitting the bars of Trastevere.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Tucked into the heart of Trastevere, this home is perfectly located for exploring the city, with trattorias and shops on your doorstep and Gianicolo Hill, the Botanical Gardens and the Vatican all within walking distance. Sure, the traditional style of this apartment, laid out over three floors, may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you’ll find everything needed for a comfortable stay. And the cherry on top? It has to be the private terrace. Just the spot for sipping limoncello as you gaze out across the Eternal City after a busy day. 

In the Heart of Rome

When we saw this grand home in the heart of Rome, we were in total awe. The classic Italianate interiors are utter joy, with exquisite antique furniture and oil paintings from the host's family homes in Puglia and Sardinia. Large windows with original shutters look out over pretty Via Bocca di Leone off Via Borgognona, with its luxury boutiques. Entertain in style at the large dining table under the light of the crystal chandelier. Or get some rest in the bedroom painted in a rich Pompeian red – if you’re not feeling sleepy, there’s a library here with a variety of books on art and literature to leaf through. Another bedroom has French doors onto a small balcony, filled with plants, with a view onto the internal courtyard – ideal for breakfast in bed before exploring this charismatic city. This location is fantastic –  it’s just a three-minute walk to the Spanish Steps and a ten-minute saunter to the stunning Trevi Fountain, while a range of sublime restaurants are right on your doorstep. You’d be hard-pressed to find better.

Placed right in the beating heart of the upmarket Prati district, and just steps away from the Vatican, it’s hard to imagine a better location for this stylish apartment with a terrace. Regular visitors to Rome will know that Prati, perched above the Vatican and across the Tiber, is the place to be. Within its wide, sweeping avenues and elegant buildings, there's high-end shopping and cool restaurants aplenty, but less of the crowds. Back at home, you’ll be surprised how spacious and light this home feels, thanks to those lofty, exposed beam ceilings and doors opening out onto a terrace (a rare treat for a property this central).

Just around the corner from the Spanish Steps, this plush little apartment is the perfect getaway to Rome. Walk just two minutes and you’re on Via Condotti, with its famed luxury shops and boutiques, running all the way to the Piazza di Spagna. You’re also within easy walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and buzzing Piazza Navona. 

Apart from its super central location, this apartment has lots going for it. Natural light fills the living room from traditional old windows. From here, you can watch the world go by on your classically Roman street. Herringbone floors and high ceilings keep things feeling grand, and the palette of greys and teals makes for a soothing spot to return to after a day in the city. We love the enclosed balcony, where a dining area is surrounded on all sides by glass – the perfect sunny breakfast spot. There’s also a tiny terrace that catches rays of sunshine in the middle of the day, painted sunshine-yellow and set up with a bistro table.

You're also not far from other tourist attractions – the Spanish Steps are a ten-minute walk, while the Pantheon is reachable in twenty. Inside, the apartment is bright and roomy, with a sleek kitchen and two cosy sofas that you'll want to sink into after a busy. We particularly liked the beautiful artwork of local sights that adorn the walls, and there's even a delicious restaurant downstairs when you don't feel like cooking. End your evenings on the private terrace – just pour yourself a glass of wine and relax as the sun goes down, basking in the magic of Rome.

Sunny mornings call for lazy breakfasts on the rooftop terrace – the home’s hidden gem. Cradled by the crumbling ochre facades, it couldn’t feel more Italian. And if you’re impressed with the view now, wait until dusk when the cupolas of the city’s churches light up. It’s the perfect spot for aperitifs – and the well-stocked honesty bar will come in handy for those.

Keep on top of fitness with the indoor spin bike, then reward yourself with a hydro-massage bath. And for those combining work and play in the city, a dedicated desk space with views of the sunny shared courtyard downstairs should do nicely. 

When it’s time to set off exploring, take your pick from the must-see sights surrounding the elegant Campo Marzio district. The Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain are all less than a ten-minute walk – or a smidge longer with pitstops for pizza al taglio and gelato along the way.

It's about a twenty-minute walk to the Pantheon, and though other landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum are around a half-an-hour away, this excellent location is well worth it. Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. The wooden beams and large windows hark back to Trastevere's history, and though it may be small, it feels like a cosy home-from-home, perfect for a couple wanting a romantic getaway in the heart of Rome.

From the striking fortress of the Castel Sant'Angelo, founded during the second century, history is on the cards within a short walk in any direction. As you cross the elegant bridge over the Tiber, heading towards the bustling streets of Campo de’ Fiori, the presence of history and old-world wonder is palpable. And on this seven-minute route to your apartment, awe continues at home.

Arriving at this traditional 'via', the orange block stands out against the green leaves of the desert-like foliage lining the street. But while the exterior has a fairly understated facade, this is what really allows for the decor to pop. We recommend pouring yourself a glass of primitivo while you take a look around.

High ceilings, art in gilded frames adorning the walls, floral accents, and a shimmering chandelier create a sense of Italian opulence. But we love the quirkiness from the enourmous painting of a tiger and the trompe l'oeil marble fireplace – painted by the creative owner of this home. Take the rest of the bottle out to the sunny balcony, where you can peer out to the inner courtyard while the trees gently rustle in the breeze.

Located on historic Via del Babuino and just a three-minute walk from the Spanish Steps, this bright, colourful home in Rome’s Spagna neighbourhood is the perfect base for those looking to be in the heart of the city’s action. Decked out in vibrant pieces of art and an eclectic blend of furnishings, this apartment is full of character and creative flair. We love the Chesterfield-style sofa in the living room, the see-through dining room chairs and the large windows that proffer views over Rome’s tiled rooftops towards the Vatican. However, our favourite spot is the master bedroom’s private balcony, ready to welcome mornings over coffee while taking in the buzz of the street below. After a refreshing soak under the rainfall shower, or an at-home massage organised by your host, set out to see the sights. Aside from the Spanish Steps that are a stone’s throw away, you’re just a five-minute walk from Villa Medici, while just under a fifteen-minute stroll will bring you to the Trevi Fountain and the Piazza Navona. After a day of sightseeing, sample one of the countless trattorias along your street (the host is happy to make a booking for you) or sit down to an intimate meal at home. Many of the city's must-see landmarks, including Camp de' Fiori and the Pantheon, are within walking distance. Even better, you've got a bevvy of art galleries, boutiques and trattorias nearby – after all, there's a reason this neighbourhood is considered the most charming in Rome. While the interiors here are rather dated, the brick ceilings and arched doorways add some character. The bedroom includes a desk for remote work, while the living room has a sofa bed for two guests. It's not the biggest, but it'll do the trick for an Eternal City getaway.

Eternal Trastevere

Not far from Campo de' Fiori and other landmarks, this apartment's location is spot-on. Being so central, there's a chance for noise, but we think it's worth the trade to be in the heart of the action. Space is a little tight with the double sofa bed in use, but you'll likely have minimal downtime if sightseeing is your priority. It's worth noting that the bedroom doesn't have an actual door – just a curtain – and that the kitchen is compact. But that aside, the contemporary finishes and prime position make this a great choice for a Roman getaway.

Etruscan Elegance

A ten-minute walk from the Vatican and moments from Ottaviano metro station, this apartment puts Rome at your fingertips. It's an excellent base for sightseeing, though if you'd prefer a more authentic stay, you'll find local eateries and independent shops in nearby Prati. There's plenty of space here for a group to stretch out. The living area is contemporary and cool, with a compact kitchen ideal for rustling up antipasti. All three bedrooms are stylish, though one has an additional single bed best suited to little ones. You'll also find desks in all the bedrooms – perfect for digital nomads.

Sistine Secret

This cute little apartment sits on the Via del Corso in the very centre of Rome. Its neighbours are luxury shops and buzzing pavement cafés, and you’re just a five-minute walk from the Spanish Steps here. Or, follow the Via del Corse five minutes in the other direction to reach the lively square of Pizza del Popolo, lined with cafés and home to a weekly book market.

The apartment is a medley of old and new, with a flatscreen TV sitting above a classic fireplace and gallery-white walls. Gilded mirrors and herringbone floors add a touch of class and the kitchen is a sleek vision of modernity for cooking at home. Our favourite spot has to be the terrace, sheltered by Rome’s historic buildings and set up with bistro tables for cocktails outside.

A compact yet charming apartment, and right in the middle of Campo Marzio, Purple Grapes offers a lovely little retreat with a fantastic location. Although not really suitable for people with mobility issues due to the lack of lift, it would be great for couples or small families who want to be in the thick of the action. The large bedroom where antiques and modern furnishings meet will certainly prove dream-inducing, while the beautiful fresco on the ceiling is really the icing on the cake.

Purple Grapes

This historic home in the centre of the Italian capital offers an authentic Roman experience, with original terracotta floors, wood-beamed ceilings and views over the ancient Arco dei Banchi. All this charm, and it's less than a fifteen-minute walk to the Pantheon. What's not to like?

You'll find all your home comforts at this top-floor apartment, with a few luxuries to remind you you're on holiday. Sink into plush double beds when you arrive and slip into a deep slumber, despite the central location. Come morning, whip up a fresh breakfast in the fully-equipped kitchen and crank open the windows to listen to the hum of the city below.

When you're ready to explore, take the lift downstairs, glide through the building's quiet courtyard and the best of Rome is before you. Castel Sant 'Angelo should be your first top – the mausoleum is just a three-minute stroll across the River Tiber. You'll pass plenty of pastry shops on the way where you can pick up a strong coffee and cannoli to enjoy en route.

Climb the original marble staircase up to the top of this elegant eighteenth-century palazzo for a whole new perspective on the Eternal City from your incredible penthouse pad. This modern apartment has been designed to make the most of its stunning setting. There's a massive wall of glass in the stylish living room, bedrooms that open up directly onto terraces, and plenty of outdoor furniture so that you can enjoy Rome's vibrant atmosphere any time of day or night. The undoubted star of the show is the incredible rooftop terrace, complete with a vast seating area and sun canopy, Jacuzzi, and dining area. We can't think of any reason not to spend every waking hour up here. When you can tear yourself away to explore the charismatic capital, you'll find yourself right in the thick of things at the Piazza Venezia end of Via del Corso, Rome's main shopping street. Seven minutes' walk will get you to postcard-perfect sights like the Trevi Fountain and Pantheon. At the same time, you can reach the ancient Roman site on Palatine Hill in fifteen minutes. Of course, those tempting boutiques might add an hour or two to those walking times.

Milliner has a history as a family home – Olimpia actually grew up here – and as such it’s got a bit of soul to it. It’s been designed to last, and many of the pieces of furniture have a sense of intransigence to them, from the tree boughs to the wicker and the collection of books. The space is slightly lopsided, as most of it feels quite large, but the second bedroom is definitely undersized, but this is really just a quibble. It’s a welcoming, genuine place.


Milliner

As well as being ideally located in one of the prettiest and most central squares in Rome, this apartment is also within walking distance from pretty much every major tourist attraction. For example, you'll find yourself less than five minutes' walk from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, nine minutes from the Trevi Fountain, and twenty-five minutes to the Colosseum. You've also got plenty of eateries nearby to refuel after a long day of exploring – favourites include seafood linguine at La Tavernetta 48 and creative bruschetta and seasonal dishes at Michelin-recommended CiPASSO – both of which are within a two-minute walk. We'd suggest you pick this home based on location alone, but luckily the classically Roman interior has its own charms. It might not be one for the cutting-edge minimalist, but with high ceilings, antique furniture and tiled floors throughout, there's plenty of character on show here. Finally, there's a lovely big kitchen for rustling up family feasts, and the light-filled bedrooms all have large windows and ornate beds in the two king rooms.

Twister

Stay in a fantastic location on Via Margutta (the home of Gregory Peck’s journalist in Roman Holiday), just a six-minute walk from the Villa Borghese Gardens and eight minutes from the Spanish Steps. After some morning sightseeing, return home, past the excellent restaurant in the courtyard serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner, and fling open the doors to your private terrace. Sit on the patio set with an afternoon bottle of wine, or sprawl out on a lounger with a good novel – you’ll have a pretty view of the surrounding pastel buildings and plenty of sunshine. Inside, the apartment is just as lovely – a bright, tastefully decorated space with designer furniture and carefully selected artworks. At the end of your busy days in the eternal city, fall asleep soundly in private comfortable bedrooms, looking forward to another morning coffee on the patio.
