This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

You know what they say – location is everything. Well, if that's true, you can't do much better than Monti. Some of Rome's most famous sights are only ten minutes away on foot – The Colosseum and The Forums – yet this neighbourhood is anything but a tourist trap. There's an authentic atmosphere in this part of town, with plenty of traditional eateries, vintage stores and chic wine bars loved by locals. It's also pretty quiet, all things considered. You'll find this apartment on a pretty street, only a few steps from Parco del Colle Oppio. With a bright living area, stylish bathrooms and comfortable bedrooms, this home is a calm place to escape the hustle and bustle. Pour yourself a glass of Italy's finest wine and relax on the sofa or around the glass dining table. If you're in the mood to rustle up a meal, the compact kitchen has plenty of dishes and culinary gear, though it's on the smaller side. There's even a desk in the second bedroom if you need to check work emails, but if it were up to us, we'd spend every day sipping espresso in one of the cafes, basking in the magic of Rome.

No monument captures the spirit of Rome quite as like the Colosseum, and being as close to the amphitheatre as this home is a real privilege. Just six minutes (on foot) to the emblematic attraction, and a traditional local area full of authentic eateries and beautiful tangerine buildings – you're perfectly placed here. Back home, you'll find a sociable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area benefitting from sleek grey floors, tasteful artwork of the city by night and plenty of natural light pouring in. Wandering through the home, you'll notice a collection of art and literature books, quirky adornments and funky printed wallpapers in the bedrooms. There, those who are working from home during their stay will be able to power through emails at the dedicated desk spaces. The other thing that really makes the flat stick out is Simona and her hosting. She’s an absolute delight and will do everything possible to make your stay as good as it can be.

This enviably located apartment looks out directly over the ancient Colosseum. Better still, the Roman Forum is a short walk away, and restaurants, cafes and bars are on the doorstep. At capacity, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in the living area, though it may not be the most comfortable option for an extended stay. And while the kitchen and bathroom are a little dated, we think the view more than makes up for it.

Oh, the view from this Roman home – we go weak at the knees every time we see it. It makes a good case for the best in the city. Who wouldn't want to wake up to the vistas of the magnificent Colosseum? We can imagine on warm summers evening opening up the windows and drinking a glass of prosecco while admiring this ancient amphitheatre set against a red sky. Let's not forget the interiors here, though – they are lovely and fit in perfectly with the old-world grandeur that emanates from Rome. We especially adore the marble-clad bathrooms and plush velvet fabrics, all chosen by a Count. If you can tear yourself away from the windows, history lovers can walk to the Basilica di San Clemente in under five minutes, while St. Peter's Square can be reached in a quarter of an hour.

The seven-minute walk to the Colosseum from this bijou apartment is lined with centuries-old churches and family-run pizzerias. Surrounded by ancient buildings and architecture, there’s no doubt you’re in the old centre here. Just beyond the Colosseum, you’ll find the sprawling ruins of the Roman Forum a ten-minute walk away. 

Within the apartment, you’ve got a calming haven of traditional furnishings and gold trim. The front door opens straight into the living room, where there’s a little collection of books for a holiday read. The cute, provincial-tiled kitchen is tucked away in one corner and there’s room to dine in here too. It’s the bedrooms that really grabbed us here though, with their hand-painted pastel murals of the Italian countryside above both beds. The little sit-outery with its bistro set that catches the sun in the morning isn’t a bad spot either.

What a great location this lovely home has – it's just a six-minute stroll from Emperor Nero's Golden House (Domus Aurea), while the Colosseum is eight minutes on foot and the Roman Forum is ten.

Back at this apartment, housed in a 19th-century building, there's a wonderful terrace with a comfy sofa, which is just what you need after a day exploring the Eternal City. There's a dining table here too, perfect for alfresco suppers of cacio e pepe (a Roman staple of pasta, pepper and cheese). Inside, we love that there's a lot of natural light, which helps the trendy Sansevieria plants to thrive. Mix up a Campari in the modern kitchen and relax on the plush purple sofa – bliss.

Situated right around the corner from the iconic Colosseum, this three-bedroom apartment is the ideal spot for families and groups seeking the best that Rome has to offer. In the morning, enjoy your coffee out on the balcony, where you can feel the bustly atmosphere of the Eternal City emanate from the streets. While the decor and furniture can feel a bit dated in parts, the true highlight of this home is its stellar location – with the Colosseum and the Roman Forum just down the road, you can’t go far wrong in this home.

Decked out in intense colours and on the fourth floor with no lift, Gladiator Stripes isn’t one for the faint-hearted. We’re big fans of the look though, and it’s clear that the place is very well-kept. The host, Mary, also pushes the boat out when it comes to service - there’s a daily cleaning service and someone at reception until 11pm, as well as free laundry, great breakfast options, and recommendations of all the places tourists don’t know about.

Situated on the famous street Via Merulana in the San Giovanni district, this is an excellently located home in a lively bourgeois area with good transport links to the rest of the city. The rooms are large and bright, all recently renovated with minimal modern design. The style of the home is more industrial than cosy thanks to the steel kitchen, prevalence of clean lines and minimal contemporary lighting, but that doesn’t compromise the comfort of the home. We did notice that the WiFi was notably slow, however, which might pose a problem for some guests.

When it comes to location, you could hardly ask for a more convenient spot to be than this bright and modern apartment, situated just moments away from the Forum and the Colosseum. At the same time, you’ll benefit from being slightly removed from the main tourist tracks, able to immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of one of Rome’s trendiest areas. 

Arrive to be welcomed by the light-filled open-plan living room and kitchen area, inviting you to kick off your shoes and relax after a long day of exploring the Eternal City. Lounge about on the plush sofa or gather everyone around the dining table for a light supper you’ll be able to rustle up with ease in the well-equipped kitchen. 

For a night of restful sleep head over to the cosy bedrooms, one offering a double bed and the second featuring two singles, with additional sleeping spaces in the living room. Wake up restored and ready for another day of la dolce vita.

Not only is this recently gentrified area a hub for outstanding street food, alternative fashion, and traditional alfresco café culture, it’s also within easy walking distance of top attractions, like the Colosseum or the Forum. Reach the world's most beloved amphitheatre in just eight minutes and explore the ancient Roman ruins, only a quick ten-minute stroll from your swanky pad. On top of all of that, truly, the best part about this trendy district is that, even with its proximity to the big sites, it’s not overrun with clamouring tourists and intense crowds, meaning you can raise the curtain on the locale and get a real sneak peek of life in Rome. The original character of the property shines – timber beams have been lovingly restored and counterpoint some of the more modern touches. We particularly liked the textured wallpaper above the bed and the matching set of Smeg kitchen appliances. After sipping an espresso and watching the daybreak over the Colosseum from your window, hit the pavements and get a closer look at Rome’s headline acts. The Roman Forum, Arch of Titus and the Via Sacra are all within a ten-minute walk. Plus, museums, piazzas and the iconic Pantheon are a seventeen-minute bus trip or ten-minute taxi ride away.

Brilliantly located in the heart of Monti, one of Rome’s oldest residential neighbourhoods and famed for its bohemian edge and cool bars, this home offers the ideal starting point for a Roman adventure. With fresh, cool, open spaces, comfortable furniture and a wealth of local amenities, all guests need to do is drop their bags off and head on out sightseeing with the help of the public Metro station, which can be found ten minutes away from home. Moreover, guests can easily walk to the Colosseum or the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore from here, and in a scenic twenty-five-minute stroll, a full day of exploring the Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Pantheon, etc. can all be achieved, all the while opportunities for the finest dining, wine tasting, and shopping are around every corner, and not to be missed.

Run by a team of professionals, you can expect to be well looked after during your stay at Odes & Psalms. While it's not the most characterful home in our books, it’s super comfortable, with a large living and dining area, and two immaculate bedrooms. The main reason to stay here, however, is the location. This residential neighbourhood has a real local feel with a side of bohemian spirit. You're also close to plenty of big attractions, without having to deal with masses of tourists. If it were just up to us, that’s exactly the kind of holiday we’d be after.

With neutral colours and bright living space, this home is a relaxed place to rest your head on a visit to the Italian capital. After a long day of sightseeing, the roomy communal area is the perfect place to rest tired feet – plop down on the cosy white sofa (which doubles as a sofa bed) with a glass of local wine and take a load off. Both bedrooms are super comfortable and the bathrooms are stylish, with rainfall showers and built-in hair dryers. You'll also feel right at home in the compact kitchen, but with so many authentic eateries and restaurants in this neighbourhood, we're sure you'd rather dine out. Speaking of location, you're in a great spot for exploring. Whether it's your first trip to Rome or you're a seasoned visitor, Monti has plenty for everyone – vintage stores, trendy cafes and chic wine bars. Best of all, this apartment is practically next door to the Parco del Colle Oppio, only a ten-minute stroll from the Domus Aurea and The Colosseum.

With its quaint cobblestone streets, bearing a delightful tangle of ochre-hued architecture, artisan cafes and vintage boutiques, the residential district of Monti offers a community feel and proximity to the main sights. You'll find this home tucked away in this creative part of town, just behind Oppian Hill. Here, you're within a ten-minute walk from the Colosseum, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major and the Roman Forum. 

Inside, it's a timeless combination of white walls, wooden floors and high ceilings. Newly renovated interiors promise a want-for-nothing stay, especially in the bathrooms – beautifully decorated and equipped with contemporary fixtures. We especially love the open-plan living area, with its cosy lounge and fully-equipped kitchen. Here, floods of sunlight stream through the large windows, creating a peaceful atmosphere primed for relaxation. Spend mornings roosted around the dining table for espressos and pastries before slipping out for a day of exploring.

Aperture

Located in only a short walk away from Nero's Golden House and Opium Hill, Odes & Chorals is situated in a sweet spot that's central enough to walk to the sights but tucked away on a quiet street. You'll certainly appreciate how calming this home is after a long day of urban exploration, and the natural light in the communal area will create a lovely breakfast atmosphere as well. The design of this home might not be to everyone's taste, but it's cosy, big, and well kept by a dedicated team of professionals.

If you're here to visit all of Rome's most recognisable spots, locations don't much more convenient than this. Just steps away from the beautiful Colosseo Gardens and less than ten minutes walk from the incredible Colosseum itself, you'll be a short walk from the nearest Metro stop, with easy access to the rest of the city's treasures. Set in a typical period building, it's a smart, modern home designed for simplicity and comfort.

It's not the most spacious home in our collection but it's ideal for a couple or a solo traveller, and can easily stretch to sleeping four thanks to a sofa bed in the open-layout living space. And while the kitchen area is on the small side, it's perfectly practical for cooking light meals at home. For everything else, you're just a stroll away from some of the neighbourhood's numerous restaurants.

Sink into the sofa in the master bedroom, admiring the floral design and beauty of the boiserie with a quiet cuppa. We’ll just say that it’s a fantastic home, in a beautiful building, in one of the best areas in the city. Just a fifteen-minute walk to the Colosseum, under thirty minutes (on foot) to Trevi Fountain, as well as being surrounded by authentic bistros, fine-dining restaurants and classy cafés – the limoncello is never far from hand here.

This building is run by a management company, so you can expect an immaculate home and excellent service, while still enjoying the privacy and freedom of a real home. More importantly, however, this home is brilliantly located in the neighbourhood of Monti. Famed for its bohemian edge, the streets are lined with cafes and you can do some of the best vintage and alternative fashion shopping in the entire city.

For a spacious one-bedroom apartment close to the action, look no further than this convenient address. A stone's throw from Parco del Colle Oppio – which overlooks Rome's iconic Colosseum – and a short journey from the baroque beauty of Piazza Navona and Trastevere's trendy trattorias, nearby bus stops and metro stations ensure this home offers easy access to the city sights from a peaceful residential base.

The apartment itself offers ample space for up to four people, with large windows illuminating the main open-plan living space, while the bedroom is slightly set back from the road for an undisturbed night of beauty sleep. A well-equipped kitchen includes everything you could need for a quiet night in. Still, with Testaccio's traditional culinary scene a twenty-minute metro journey away, we don't imagine it'll get all that much use. One of Rome's last remaining residential neighbourhoods in the historic city centre, authentic Roman experiences don't come much more real than Testaccio.

The ideal Roman retreat, this apartment is mere moments from the Colosseum. You couldn't ask for a better vantage point if sightseeing is on your to-do list. Outside, you'll find the famous landmark at the end of the street, plus nearby public transportation makes it easy to explore further afield. The apartment itself is on the first floor of a 17th-century building. There's a compact kitchenette suitable for snacks, a bright living area with a glimpse of the Colosseum, and a sofa bed for flexible sleeping arrangements. The local area can be a little noisy, and there isn't a lift, but we think it's a solid option for short stays.

Inside, Bellflower is large and comfortable, and while the design isn’t particularly avant-garde, the neutral colour scheme makes for a calming overall effect. The two balconies are also a nice touch, without being overwhelming. What does stand out, however, is the location. The Colosseum is at the end of the street (maybe 200m, at a stretch), yet because it’s on the less-frequented side, the streets are surprising free of tourists. 


Bellflower

Situated just 200 metres from the Colosseum, this first-floor apartment puts you in a prime position for sightseeing. You'll find plenty of restaurants and shops in the local area, not to mention tram stops and a metro station for adventures further afield. Back home, we love the views of the nearby Basilica of San Clemente. The living space is bright and comfortable, and though the kitchen lacks an oven, it has everything you need to rustle up lighter fare. There isn't a lift here, and two guests will sleep on the sofa bed – but, to be moments from Rome's most famous landmark, it more than fits the bill.

This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

With its contemporary style full of sleek furnishings and decor, this is slice of modern living in an especially ancient part of Rome. Find yourselves right in the thick of the action as soon as you leave your door, with the Piazza Navona and Campo de Fiori close by, and the iconic Pantheon just down the street. When you’ve had your fill of sightseeing, kick off your shoes and climb into the cosy bed, or have a coffee outside in the courtyard.

Pantheon Charm

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.
