There’s no better way to embrace the history of Rome than to stay in a former 17th-century palace. This apartment’s building embraces the spirit of the “grandezza romana” with its ornate doorway just next to a local pizzeria and marble statues in the ancient stairwell. Stepping into the apartment itself you’re met with grand, high ceilings and a traditional parquet floor. Old double doors let the space flow from the living room, to the dining room and a bijou little kitchen. You’re in a prime location here too. Apart from the buzzing pizzeria literally on your doorstep, there is myriad local trattoria serving up plates of carbonara and tiramisu in the historic streets around you. It’s a seven-minute stroll to Piazza di Spanga (where the Spanish Steps are) and the Trevi Fountain is one minute's walk away, showing just how central this apartment is.

In most cities, paintings dating back to the seventeenth century are typically looked at from a safe distance in museums and galleries, but in a place like Rome, it's not unusual to live among historic artefacts. Take this studio apartment in the middle of Colonna, the famous shopping district. The building dates back to the seventeenth century and the remains of a fresco from that time have been preserved by the architect on one of the walls. Aside from that, the interior design is heavily influenced by mid-century trends, from the Art Deco crockery in the kitchen and the boldly patterned chairs to the Art Nouveau-inspired mirrors in the bathroom. If your four-century-old home has got you in the mood to see more of the city's illustrious heritage, you're in luck as the central location is excellent. You can walk to Trevi Fountain in seven minutes, while the Pantheon can be seen in just under ten.

Set in a gorgeous 20th-century building only a five-minute walk from the Piazza di Spagna, this home delivers on location in spades. You're surrounded by mouth-watering restaurants, traditional cafes and upscale shops, not to mention all the museums, landmarks (including The Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain) and galleries within walking distance. Spend an afternoon wandering Rome's cobbled streets before enjoying an aperitif at one of the trendy bars in this neighbourhood. When you've had your fun for the day, retreat home to this bright and roomy apartment. Inside, it's uncluttered and minimal, which only enhances the relaxing atmosphere. Our favourite spot is the long balcony, which is shaded from the Italian sun by a leafy trellis. Sit out there in the evenings with a glass of wine and admire the views before unwinding with a soak in the lush deep bathtub.

Plush velvet, wood floors, elegant gilding, and soft tones echo the colours of Rome while light - airy bedrooms, each with a contemporary en-suite, offer extra privacy. Although the kitchen is compact, the large dining area and charming balcony offer lovely spaces for eating in.

With a combination of old-fashioned furniture and modern flourishes, Silk Road manages to retain an understanding of Rome’s history without getting bogged down in recreating the past. It’s not a simple balancing act, and for the most part, Silk Road pulls it off. And, as should go without saying, having the Pantheon about 100m away is not to be sniffed at (as long as you can handle the tourists that accompany it).

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Rome, this contemporary pad is in a pretty unbeatable location. The city's endless array of restaurants, shops and museums are a short walk away, but that's not the only reason we love this neighbourhood. You can wander to the Trevi Fountain in six minutes, stroll through the tremendous Villa Borghese in ten, and shop for provincial produce in Campo de' Fiori in twenty-five minutes, flat. Gives a whole new meaning to the saying 'when in Rome', doesn't it?

After a busy day of sightseeing, pour yourself a glass of red wine and unwind with some locally-sourced gastronomic goodies in the open-plan living area. Decorated in soft cream shades and featuring sumptuous sofas and traditionally-shuttered windows, the lounge radiates relaxation and charm. The kitchen isn't the biggest in our collection, but it's well-equipped if you're in the mood to rustle up a light breakfast or quick lunch. Meanwhile, the bedrooms are comfortable and cosy – just the ticket following a long afternoon on your feet. We think it's an ideal laid-back getaway in Italy's buzzing capital.

Right on the edge of Campo Marzio, Roman Standard is in an enviable position among some of the smartest boutiques in Italy. It’s tucked under the eaves, so it’s worth noting that parts of the ceiling slope down and are therefore quite low. In the end though, this adds to the cosy feel of the whole place – there’s even a fireplace to keep you warm if you’re there during winter (it’s also there in summer, you’re just less likely to need it).

Let's not beat around the bush: the star of the show here is that unparalleled view of the Pantheon and the bustling piazza. It's an incredible sight, and it's all yours to enjoy from the small balcony. But to reduce this gorgeous flat to the view alone is a massive disservice. It's a real stunner, both inside and out – think plush sofas built for lounging, sleek marble countertops, luxurious bedding fit for royalty (which are turned daily for free), and of course, that beguiling printed wallpaper. We can go on and on about how much we adore this flat – don't even get us started on those chequerboard floors – but the fact that you can arrange services like massages and champagne on arrival make it even better. You are truly in the heart of the city, surrounded by markets, shops, cafes, restaurants, ice cream parlours – you name it, you're near it – while sights like the Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain are just a short stroll away.
