The bedroom is at mezzanine level above the living and dining space, so you’ll need to be able to manage the stairs to stay here.

There’s no better way to embrace the history of Rome than to stay in a former 17th-century palace. This apartment’s building embraces the spirit of the “grandezza romana” with its ornate doorway just next to a local pizzeria and marble statues in the ancient stairwell. Stepping into the apartment itself you’re met with grand, high ceilings and a traditional parquet floor. Old double doors let the space flow from the living room, to the dining room and a bijou little kitchen. You’re in a prime location here too. Apart from the buzzing pizzeria literally on your doorstep, there is myriad local trattoria serving up plates of carbonara and tiramisu in the historic streets around you. It’s a seven-minute stroll to Piazza di Spanga (where the Spanish Steps are) and the Trevi Fountain is one minute's walk away, showing just how central this apartment is.

Set in a gorgeous 20th-century building only a five-minute walk from the Piazza di Spagna, this home delivers on location in spades. You're surrounded by mouth-watering restaurants, traditional cafes and upscale shops, not to mention all the museums, landmarks (including The Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain) and galleries within walking distance. Spend an afternoon wandering Rome's cobbled streets before enjoying an aperitif at one of the trendy bars in this neighbourhood. When you've had your fun for the day, retreat home to this bright and roomy apartment. Inside, it's uncluttered and minimal, which only enhances the relaxing atmosphere. Our favourite spot is the long balcony, which is shaded from the Italian sun by a leafy trellis. Sit out there in the evenings with a glass of wine and admire the views before unwinding with a soak in the lush deep bathtub.

With a combination of old-fashioned furniture and modern flourishes, Silk Road manages to retain an understanding of Rome’s history without getting bogged down in recreating the past. It’s not a simple balancing act, and for the most part, Silk Road pulls it off. And, as should go without saying, having the Pantheon about 100m away is not to be sniffed at (as long as you can handle the tourists that accompany it).

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Rome, this contemporary pad is in a pretty unbeatable location. The city's endless array of restaurants, shops and museums are a short walk away, but that's not the only reason we love this neighbourhood. You can wander to the Trevi Fountain in six minutes, stroll through the tremendous Villa Borghese in ten, and shop for provincial produce in Campo de' Fiori in twenty-five minutes, flat. Gives a whole new meaning to the saying 'when in Rome', doesn't it?

After a busy day of sightseeing, pour yourself a glass of red wine and unwind with some locally-sourced gastronomic goodies in the open-plan living area. Decorated in soft cream shades and featuring sumptuous sofas and traditionally-shuttered windows, the lounge radiates relaxation and charm. The kitchen isn't the biggest in our collection, but it's well-equipped if you're in the mood to rustle up a light breakfast or quick lunch. Meanwhile, the bedrooms are comfortable and cosy – just the ticket following a long afternoon on your feet. We think it's an ideal laid-back getaway in Italy's buzzing capital.

When we imagine a stay in Rome, we think of the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. This home's location is ideal – it's just a short walk from both, while the Colosseum is also within walking distance (with comfy shoes). Of course, with such a central location, you're probably going to hear some street noise back at this apartment. We love the beautiful frescoes on the ceilings and the retro photos of celebrities adorning the walls. At full capacity, one guest will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, so this place might be best for a couple if you don't want to compromise on socialising space.

Right on the edge of Campo Marzio, Roman Standard is in an enviable position among some of the smartest boutiques in Italy. It’s tucked under the eaves, so it’s worth noting that parts of the ceiling slope down and are therefore quite low. In the end though, this adds to the cosy feel of the whole place – there’s even a fireplace to keep you warm if you’re there during winter (it’s also there in summer, you’re just less likely to need it).

When we saw this grand home in the heart of Rome, we were in total awe. The classic Italianate interiors are utter joy, with exquisite antique furniture and oil paintings from the host's family homes in Puglia and Sardinia. Large windows with original shutters look out over pretty Via Bocca di Leone off Via Borgognona, with its luxury boutiques. Entertain in style at the large dining table under the light of the crystal chandelier. Or get some rest in the bedroom painted in a rich Pompeian red – if you’re not feeling sleepy, there’s a library here with a variety of books on art and literature to leaf through. Another bedroom has French doors onto a small balcony, filled with plants, with a view onto the internal courtyard – ideal for breakfast in bed before exploring this charismatic city. This location is fantastic –  it’s just a three-minute walk to the Spanish Steps and a ten-minute saunter to the stunning Trevi Fountain, while a range of sublime restaurants are right on your doorstep. You’d be hard-pressed to find better.

Take this studio apartment in the middle of Colonna, the famous shopping district. The building dates back to the seventeenth century and the remains of a fresco from that time have been preserved by the architect on one of the walls. Aside from that, the interior design is heavily influenced by mid-century trends, from the Art Deco crockery in the kitchen and the boldly patterned chairs to the Art Nouveau-inspired mirrors in the bathroom. If your four-century-old home has got you in the mood to see more of the city's illustrious heritage, you're in luck as the central location is excellent. You can walk to Trevi Fountain in seven minutes, while the Pantheon can be seen in just under ten.

There's no doubt that the location is excellent, especially if sightseeing is on the agenda. Yet it's the terrace back home that steals the show. It boasts panoramic views of Rome's historic skyline – nothing beats a glimpse of St. Peter's Basilica or the Vittorio Emanuele II monument while enjoying your morning espresso. Inside, the design marries traditional charm with contemporary touches. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, but we think that's a fair trade given the central neighbourhood.

Nauticalia is set just a couple of hundred metres from Piazza di Spagna, giving it the perfect location for people who are in Rome to do a bit of that famous sightseeing. That’s not the only thing going for it, as the apartment boasts some lovely design elements, such as the frescoed ceiling or the marine theme in the bathroom, and the huge beds will keep you comfortable. The kitchen, despite having some wonderful exposed brickwork, is pretty small and basic, but there are so many places to eat in the area that you won’t even notice.

The best thing about this city-centre home in a historic Roman building? It has to be its view of the Trevi fountain, the waters of which are, at the most, twenty metres away. While this is a tourist-trodden landmark, you'll certainly have pride of place when you stay in this traditional apartment.

Admirers of wonderfully kitsch decor will love this home, where ditsy patterned wallpaper and antique furniture take centre stage. You'll also find all the practical necessities in the well-outfitted kitchen and comfortable bedroom. After a long day of walking over the seven hills of Rome, this is the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy a good night's sleep.

You're well placed to visit the plethora of iconic monuments and landmarks in this historic capital. The Pantheon is just an eight-minute walk away, while you can reach the must-see Colosseum in twenty minutes on foot. You'll pass plenty of pastry shops and cafés en route to refuel.

Cosy and compact, this apartment is an ideal base in Rome. Its location couldn’t be better, just a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, and within walking distance of most of the city’s sights. There are countless restaurants and bars right on your doorstep, which is handy as the kitchenette is more suitable for preparing light bites – you can get your pasta fill nearby instead. The apartment is spread over two floors, with a quiet seating area on the second floor. If you’re hoping for more space and privacy, we’d recommend sticking to a guest count of two, so the sofa bed in the living room isn’t in use.

It doesn’t get more central than this fuss-free apartment. You’ll be moments from the Spanish Steps, so close you can actually glimpse the monument's tower from the small Romeo and Juliet balcony. While it's not the most modern home, we think it works well for couples. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, while the others will kip on the mezzanine underneath the rustic beams. The kitchen is compact but well-appointed, though it’s best suited to antipasti rather than full meals. For those who want to spend most of their time sightseeing, it’s a good option.

Sweet Juliette

With a fantastic address in the heart of Rome, this elegant apartment offers a successful blend of modern chic and timeless character. Combining antique pieces with modern details, this unique apartment on the top floor of a 16th-century aristocratic palace has plenty of character and Roman soul. Ascend the floating staircase up to the cosy bedrooms, benefitting from sloped wooden ceilings and slatted screens that make for a private and homely space to unwind. Exposed brickwork in the kitchen contrasts nicely with the otherwise clean and modern design, making a great area to enjoy group meals. Elsewhere, those keeping one eye on work during their stay will notice the home office space in the corner of the living room. Emails seen to, it's out for a day spent taking in Rome's most beloved sights – pennies at the ready, Trevi Fountain is just a short four-minute stroll away. The home's position just off Via del Corso means it's easy to get to many of the attractions in the city on foot. Last, but certainly not least, round off a lovely day spent sightseeing with a tipple of limoncello from your private balcony, offering a spectacular view of the church of Sant’Ignazio – it's truly special.

Back inside, from the moment you enter you'll notice the black and white photographic wallpaper prints adorning the walls, that we really loved – there's a charming retro feel around the apartment. Plus, a pair of fancy bathrooms – complete with chromo-therapeutic rainfall showers to soak your aching tootsies after a day spent wandering this ancient part of the world. Enjoy mapping out your afternoon's tourist itinerary around the stylish dark wood dining table with a tipple of limoncello in hand. With so much to see and do around here, this pad offers just about everything needed for a sweet stay in the Italian capital.

In a quiet backstreet just off the legendary Via Vittorio Veneto, this apartment would make an excellent retreat for a couple visiting Rome. It’s an eight-minute walk to the Spanish Steps, and less than ten minutes on foot to the Trevi Fountain. The elegant decor of this studio apartment will certainly have you tossing three coins in the fountain, hoping to return. Exposed beams and stonework create a sense of the building’s history. The stylish kitchen area with its sleek breakfast bar illuminated by Edison bulbs is particularly spacious for a studio in central Rome. Although there’s no door between the bedroom area and living area, an archway and the generally large floorspace makes it feel like a one-bed rather than a studio.

It almost seems redundant to try to talk about this magical spot in the heart of Rome – we’ll never be able to do it justice like the photos can. In stunning condition, the apartment hasn't aged at all and invites guests into a time capsule filled with spectacular artworks, antique furniture and original features that are usually only reserved these days for royal palaces and museums alike. Secret doorways and passageways give way to a one-of-a-kind experience and continuous surprises no matter how long you stay. You needn't bother visiting the crowded galleries and museums that the city is so often renowned for, as you'll have your very own gallery at home. Almost every wall is adorned with oil paintings or sumptuous wallpaper, inviting guests to experience the kind of opulence that few ever get to know. And with the vast array of world cuisine and Italian gastronomy at your fingertips, be sure to discover some of Rome's top restaurants in the surrounding area. Having said that – hiring a private chef to come and cook for you is equally as desirable here, as, with such a magnificent dining room setting, it makes sense to embrace every aspect of this outstanding Roman home.

Before we even arrived at Soft Shading, we were struck by the location. It’s so close to the Trevi fountain that the only danger is you’ll end up stuck among all the tourists. It’s very new inside, and the modern fittings contrast nicely with some of the original structural features, like the ceilings. The only drawback is the slightly inadequate living room, upstairs, and without space for a full house, but as it’s right in the middle of the city, you won’t be spending much time in.


Soft Shading

Modern and minimalist, this Art Deco-inspired apartment is a well-designed pocket of calm in the heart of Rome. Just a seven-minute walk to Trevi Fountain and the famous Spanish Steps – you really couldn't be better placed in the Eternal City. A wander around the immediate neighbourhood will take you to designer shops and hidden wine bars for a glass of Barolo. In a quiet courtyard that's away from the bustling tourists, there's a local and authentic feel to the home while still being close to the city's most beloved attractions. Back inside, you'll find a fresh and functional space benefitting from plush leather sofas and a stylish white dining area with tasteful artwork adorning the walls. But the real draw of this home is the shaded terrace – complete with an elegant dining area. We can think of no better way to start the day than with a basket of pastries and your morning coffee out here.

It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Spagna Relaxation

Ammon's Place is a very stylish apartment right on the edge of Campo Marzio, the location is incredible, between the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. There are a few singular decisions with regards to what is provided (one set of keys, no food etc.) but these aren’t symbols of carelessness - the host, Domenico, on the contrary is charming and attentive. Air conditioning in every room and the super king-size beds ensure that there is substance beneath the style, as does the great collection of books (though young children might find them less interesting).
