Those visiting Rome for the ancient marvels and historic sights won't find a location much better than this. It’s 100 metres from the Colosseum and the ruin-filled park of Colle Opio is your next-door neighbour. Wandering the surrounding streets it seems like every corner is home to an ancient church between family-run trattoria and gelaterias. The apartment is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, and stepping inside you feel the opulence of an old-world parlour. Velvet seats at the bistro table, a velvet sofa piled high with cushions and suspended candelabra create the opulence, while the exposed stone and timber beams keep one foot firmly in the building’s history. Chess can provide the evening’s entertainment, which feels fitting amidst the gilded mirrors and oil paintings. Heading up the striking mesh-metal staircase, the master bedroom has a pretty arched window with a window seat providing the perfect spot for a bit of holiday reading.

Can you think of anything more Roman than the Colosseum? We love this home because you don't have to step a foot outside to see this ancient amphitheatre. Just look out of the windows – no more battling like a gladiator with fellow tourists to get that perfect shot – how fabulous is that? Modern and bright, this home is an elegant journey into Italian 70's chic meets classical design, with its parquet flooring, marble columns, and plush velvet sofas. Gather around the dining table for cocktails at one of the best vantage points in Rome to see the sunset, and marvel at this magnificent monument set against a fiery sky. Your Instagram likes will surely go through the roof. You'll be infinitely happy that you found this special place in the Eternal City.

Situated on the famous street Via Merulana in the San Giovanni district, this is an excellently located home in a lively bourgeois area with good transport links to the rest of the city. The rooms are large and bright, all recently renovated with minimal modern design. The style of the home is more industrial than cosy thanks to the steel kitchen, prevalence of clean lines and minimal contemporary lighting, but that doesn’t compromise the comfort of the home. We did notice that the WiFi was notably slow, however, which might pose a problem for some guests.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

Aperitivo might have a small footprint, but it’s unusual in that it’s a real house, spread over three floors, from the ground to the (magical) roof terrace. It’s been put together with a lot of care – this much is evident – and a lot of the furniture has been cleverly made from repurposed materials, such as the chest of drawers that used to be an old trunk. Finding this sort of place in the middle of Monti isn’t easy, and we’re very happy to have come across Aperitivo.

Keen to be in the historic heart of Rome? If so, you'll love this apartment. Just a few steps from the Trevi Fountain, it's a short stroll from restaurants, shops, and must-see landmarks – that's about as central as it gets. Inside, the design merges contemporary comfort with classic charm. The living area has ornate ceilings and large windows offering a glimpse of the famous fountain, while each bedroom has its own bathroom for added convenience. There isn't a coffee machine, but there are plenty of cafes within walking distance where you can kickstart your day with an espresso.

No monument captures the spirit of Rome quite as like the Colosseum, and being as close to the amphitheatre as this home is a real privilege. Just six minutes (on foot) to the emblematic attraction, and a traditional local area full of authentic eateries and beautiful tangerine buildings – you're perfectly placed here. Back home, you'll find a sociable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area benefitting from sleek grey floors, tasteful artwork of the city by night and plenty of natural light pouring in. Wandering through the home, you'll notice a collection of art and literature books, quirky adornments and funky printed wallpapers in the bedrooms. There, those who are working from home during their stay will be able to power through emails at the dedicated desk spaces. The other thing that really makes the flat stick out is Simona and her hosting. She’s an absolute delight and will do everything possible to make your stay as good as it can be.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

When you think of Rome, architecture will likely come to mind, but the city is also known for picturesque gardens, a thriving art scene, and the most incredible food. This home, located on a quiet road in the Monti area, puts you right in the heart of The Eternal City and therefore, on the doorstep of all the things that make it great. Start by exploring Piazza Santa Madonna dei Monti, only a minute away, as you wind your way towards the notable sights. Sit outside of coffee shops, people watching as you sip your cappuccino from under an umbrella, before checking out the local shops. See the Colosseum, Forum, Arch of Constantine, and many more historical landmarks in all their glory just by wandering ten-minutes away from home. 

With so much to see, you might be rushing from one landmark to another, so take a time out with a relaxing walk through the scenic Parco del Colle Oppio – if there happens to be a gelato vendor along the way, all the better. After a good dose of ruins, cathedrals and museums, return home to enjoy a glass of wine out on the balcony as you unwind. 

The kitchen, although compact, allows you to whip up some basics and if you’re feeling inspired to cook, why not do it together and take your meal up on the rooftop terrace at sunset? You might opt to stay in after dinner, playing board games, or head out and experience nightlife at the bars in Piazza Santa Madonna dei Monti – whatever you choose, this comfortable home will be waiting for you when you return.

The seven-minute walk to the Colosseum from this bijou apartment is lined with centuries-old churches and family-run pizzerias. Surrounded by ancient buildings and architecture, there’s no doubt you’re in the old centre here. Just beyond the Colosseum, you’ll find the sprawling ruins of the Roman Forum a ten-minute walk away. 

Within the apartment, you’ve got a calming haven of traditional furnishings and gold trim. The front door opens straight into the living room, where there’s a little collection of books for a holiday read. The cute, provincial-tiled kitchen is tucked away in one corner and there’s room to dine in here too. It’s the bedrooms that really grabbed us here though, with their hand-painted pastel murals of the Italian countryside above both beds. The little sit-outery with its bistro set that catches the sun in the morning isn’t a bad spot either.
