This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

It’s 100 metres from the Colosseum and the ruin-filled park of Colle Opio is your next-door neighbour. Wandering the surrounding streets it seems like every corner is home to an ancient church between family-run trattoria and gelaterias. The apartment is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, and stepping inside you feel the opulence of an old-world parlour. Velvet seats at the bistro table, a velvet sofa piled high with cushions and suspended candelabra create the opulence, while the exposed stone and timber beams keep one foot firmly in the building’s history. Chess can provide the evening’s entertainment, which feels fitting amidst the gilded mirrors and oil paintings. Heading up the striking mesh-metal staircase, the master bedroom has a pretty arched window with a window seat providing the perfect spot for a bit of holiday reading.

Brilliantly situated in Monti, one of Rome's most ancient neighbourhoods, this top-floor apartment is truly something special. There's no question that the private terrace is the crown jewel of the place. With a charming bistro table and an abundance of sunshine, it's the perfect spot to start the morning with an espresso and a pastry – and of course, end the evening with a bottle of Italian wine as the world passes by below you. 

Elsewhere, you'll find two quaint Juliet balconies – not ideal for sitting, but the view of the bustling street below is as Roman as it gets. The rest of the apartment is filled with light, packed with character and super stylish. Curl up on the cream-coloured sofa and watch a flick on Netflix, rustle up homecooked pasta in the kitchen and work from home at the desk in the second bedroom. There's more than enough space here to spread out and make yourself at home.

And the options for exploring are endless. The forum and the Colosseum are less than a ten-minute walk away – and there's plenty more sightseeing where that came from. Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is also within walking distance and two metro lines are nearby for when you fancy visiting landmarks further into the city. Or just stay local and wine and dine the night away at the restaurants, cafes and bars on your doorstep, including a delicious gelateria right downstairs for some quintessentially Italian gelato.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

The flat isn’t particularly bright – Via Palermo outside is narrow, and has high buildings – but there’s enough light to get by, and the street is beautiful enough that we’ll forgive it. Everything, from the kitchen chairs, to the curtains, to the rainfall shower, is high quality and it all makes sense – functionality isn’t an afterthought.

What a great location this lovely home has – it's just a six-minute stroll from Emperor Nero's Golden House (Domus Aurea), while the Colosseum is eight minutes on foot and the Roman Forum is ten.

Back at this apartment, housed in a 19th-century building, there's a wonderful terrace with a comfy sofa, which is just what you need after a day exploring the Eternal City. There's a dining table here too, perfect for alfresco suppers of cacio e pepe (a Roman staple of pasta, pepper and cheese). Inside, we love that there's a lot of natural light, which helps the trendy Sansevieria plants to thrive. Mix up a Campari in the modern kitchen and relax on the plush purple sofa – bliss.

The living room with its views over the neighbourhood is a great place to relax and the bedrooms are also a good size, and one has a desk for when you need to catch up on work. This place offers a truly unforgettable Roman holiday.

The Roman View

Base yourself in Monti, one of Rome's coolest neighbourhoods. You'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and many independent eateries, putting you within easy reach of all Rome has to offer. The apartment is bright and cosy. Design-wise, it's a bit eclectic, but it's welcoming. There's also a sofa bed for two. That said, the highlight is the balcony and its sweeping views. Just sit back with a coffee or a glass of wine and take in the panoramas of the historic city centre.

You know what they say – location is everything. Well, if that's true, you can't do much better than Monti. Some of Rome's most famous sights are only ten minutes away on foot – The Colosseum and The Forums – yet this neighbourhood is anything but a tourist trap. There's an authentic atmosphere in this part of town, with plenty of traditional eateries, vintage stores and chic wine bars loved by locals. It's also pretty quiet, all things considered. You'll find this apartment on a pretty street, only a few steps from Parco del Colle Oppio. With a bright living area, stylish bathrooms and comfortable bedrooms, this home is a calm place to escape the hustle and bustle. Pour yourself a glass of Italy's finest wine and relax on the sofa or around the glass dining table. If you're in the mood to rustle up a meal, the compact kitchen has plenty of dishes and culinary gear, though it's on the smaller side. There's even a desk in the second bedroom if you need to check work emails, but if it were up to us, we'd spend every day sipping espresso in one of the cafes, basking in the magic of Rome.

Upon arriving at this home, it immediately becomes clear that it's a little bit special. Not only is it in the perfect position for getting around the sights, but the approach itself is wonderfully Roman. Cobbled streets, cloisters, and courtyards all make an appearance.

The iconic Colosseum and Roman Forum are both just under a ten-minute walk away. It's around the same distance to Piazza Venezia, while the beautiful Trevi Fountain is fifteen minutes on foot. Or immerse yourself in the local culture at Mercato Rionale Monti (a one minute stroll), and pick up some fresh produce to take home.

Back in this apartment, whip up a carbonara with some ingredients from the market in the kitchen if you don't fancy eating out. This home has an elegant neutral colour scheme enlivened by pretty artwork – we especially love the cute vintage Fiat 500 painting. This place is perfect for a couple, solo traveller or business professional looking for a stylish and charming address close to many of Rome’s most popular attractions.

Among streets peppered with restaurants and book shops on one corner, and ancient ruins on the next, Rome’s Castro Pretorio district is a melting pot of history and culture. You can find basilicas, palazzos, and even the Teatro dell'Opera all less than 600 metres from your front door on the famed Via Cavour. Just like its locale, your apartment is full of original character and style.

Set on the first floor of a traditional block, the views from the French windows and private balcony offer a fantastic display of the local lifestyle. You can spot the honey and pink tones of nearby Italian architecture, as mopeds whizz by on the streets and people chat at kerbside cafés (all while you sip prosecco on the outdoor seating).

If you can tear yourself away from these eye-catching city scenes, take a stroll through the home to explore. The original tiled floors are reminiscent of a Roman bath house, with ornate mosaic patterns throughout the lounge, hall, and bedroom. We love the melange of classic features alongside modern, psychedelic art on the walls and Starck-style ghost chairs for dining and working. Sometimes when looking for a place to stay in a foreign city, you have to make a decision about what to prioritise, but this Roman apartment has all the bases covered. It’s in a great location in Monti — one of our favourite parts of the city, famous for vintage shops and undiscovered restaurants — but the interiors are just as much of a draw. The frescoed ceilings are perhaps the most striking element, a welcome nod to the history of both the building and the area, but the brightly coloured walls and touches of modernity — such as the transparent dining chairs and strikingly blue master bathroom — are also appreciated additions. The winning touch is the small balcony just off the kitchen, which has a charming view of the internal courtyard.

Tranquillity awaits at this whimsical Italian apartment, which you’ll find tucked away down a quiet backstreet in Monti, one of Rome’s most eclectic neighbourhoods. 

Featuring high ceilings and immaculate wooden floors, this is the perfect place to unwind after a day of work or play in Italy's Eternal City.  We particularly love the open-plan living area here and could see ourselves spending hours around the dining table, enjoying a bowl of fresh pasta alfredo and sharing a bottle of dry Frascati wine with our fellow guests. And when night falls, what better place to drift off than the secluded master bedroom, which comes with its very own ensuite bathroom, ideal if you’re after a bit of extra privacy. 

The interior’s not the only thing worth writing home about here though. With the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and the Basilica of Saint Mary Major all within easy walking distance, this place is perfectly situated for exploring the city. Tick off the major tourist attractions or stick to the streets of Monti, whiling away the hours in one of its trendy wine bars or vintage boutiques. However you decide to spend your time, we think you'll agree there's no place quite like Rome. 

The Starling's Nest

Soft colours anchor Centurion Flax’s interior – a savvy decision that prevents anything from overshadowing the beautiful frescoes on the ceiling. As a whole, it’s a relaxing, grown-up place, never brash, and with an air of quality to the furniture and fittings. There’s also a small balcony, looking out onto Via Palermo, but it’s too small to spend a lot of time outside. Besides, there are so many interesting bars and cafes around that if you were after aperitivo or breakfast, you aren’t short of options.

Exuding plenty of Roman character and rustic charm, there are several lovely original features in this home – the most striking of which are the painted frescoed ceilings dating back hundreds of years. The chequered floors are another nice touch that point back to the history of the palazzo. Elsewhere, it's a stylish and modern apartment with coffee coloured walls, a black leather sofa and a chic dining area with quirky chairs. Right by the window, it's a great spot to feast on fettuccini on those cosy evenings in. Come morning, enjoy your double espresso perched on an elegant ghost stool around the breakfast bar, before mapping out the day's tourist itinerary. And where better place to start than the Colosseum – a thirteen-minute wander from your door. A stroll around the immediate neighbourhood of Monti provides that authentic, local feel too.

Arrive to be welcomed by the light-filled open-plan living room and kitchen area, inviting you to kick off your shoes and relax after a long day of exploring the Eternal City. Lounge about on the plush sofa or gather everyone around the dining table for a light supper you’ll be able to rustle up with ease in the well-equipped kitchen. 

For a night of restful sleep head over to the cosy bedrooms, one offering a double bed and the second featuring two singles, with additional sleeping spaces in the living room. Wake up restored and ready for another day of la dolce vita. 

Outside your door, you’ll find yourself just steps away from the vintage stores and charming cafes of Monti and a ten-minute walk from all the splendour of Ancient Rome. 

Fellini's Dreams 

Paquino is perfectly comfortable, and while it lacks a bit of flair in the design department, it’s pleasant to look at. None of this really matters though, because the big thing going for it is the position, right in the heart of Monti. There are loads of excellent restaurants around (although the kitchen is actually pretty good, easily enough for a decent meal) and you really are in the cobbled streets among the ancient ruins that define the city.


Paquino

Fast Cars is a great base for exploring Rome. Nestled in Monti (one of the city’s most charming neighbourhoods), with picturesque views of Foro di Augusto, we think this home has a lot to offer. Although it’s on the minimalist side, the features of the nineteenth-century building blend well with the more contemporary furniture. It’s right beside Mercato Rionale Monti, a food market popular with locals and tourists alike, where you can pick up fresh ingredients to cook up a storm at home.

Fast Cars

Oh, the view from this Roman home – we go weak at the knees every time we see it. It makes a good case for the best in the city. Who wouldn't want to wake up to the vistas of the magnificent Colosseum? We can imagine on warm summers evening opening up the windows and drinking a glass of prosecco while admiring this ancient amphitheatre set against a red sky. Let's not forget the interiors here, though – they are lovely and fit in perfectly with the old-world grandeur that emanates from Rome. We especially adore the marble-clad bathrooms and plush velvet fabrics, all chosen by a Count. If you can tear yourself away from the windows, history lovers can walk to the Basilica di San Clemente in under five minutes, while St. Peter's Square can be reached in a quarter of an hour.

Impero

The three things that stand out about Urban Meadow are the location, the building, and the balcony. Beyond these, it’s a very comfortable, but not outstanding, place, but once you factor them in, everything changes. It’s on one of the nicest streets in Monti, and is not only impressive from the street, but also from the building’s courtyard. The steel and glass that dominate contrast well with the exterior façade, and the abundance of plants lifts the spirits of the whole area.

This enviably located apartment looks out directly over the ancient Colosseum. Better still, the Roman Forum is a short walk away, and restaurants, cafes and bars are on the doorstep. At capacity, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in the living area, though it may not be the most comfortable option for an extended stay. And while the kitchen and bathroom are a little dated, we think the view more than makes up for it.
