In the heart of the historic Rione Ponte neighbourhood, this apartment puts all of Rome's must-sees at your fingertips. Whether you want to visit Piazza Navona, The Pantheon, or St. Peter's Basilica, it's no problem – they're all about a ten-minute walk away. Back home, the double sofa bed offers flexibility if you're travelling in a larger group. The design is contemporary rather than charming, but the Juliet balcony is a nice, traditional touch (and the view is quintessentially Roman). While the kitchen is small, you'll find plenty of delicious eateries nearby – the climb up to the third floor is a great way to burn off all that pasta.

It’s a journey to get to Ocean Eyes, but we promise it’s worth it. Tucked away on the fourth floor of a beautiful Navona building, it comes with an airy terrace, perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine. The immediate street is filled with antique shops – and you’re only a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Piazza Navona. The place itself is quite small (especially if four guests stay here), but we’re willing to look past that as it’s just so charming.

Not far from Campo de' Fiori and other landmarks, this apartment's location is spot-on. Being so central, there's a chance for noise, but we think it's worth the trade to be in the heart of the action. Space is a little tight with the double sofa bed in use, but you'll likely have minimal downtime if sightseeing is your priority. It's worth noting that the bedroom doesn't have an actual door – just a curtain – and that the kitchen is compact. But that aside, the contemporary finishes and prime position make this a great choice for a Roman getaway.

You’ll find this charming apartment on the narrow, atmospheric Via dei Coronari (officially one of the world’s ten most beautiful streets), right in Rome’s historic centre. It’s just a two-minute stroll to buzzing Piazza Navona where cafés and restaurants spill out onto to pavement and ancient fountains still trickle away. Just across the River Tiber, a fifteen-minute walk takes you to the endless museums and Sistine Chapel at The Vatican. Housed in a building dating back to the 1500s, this apartment still radiates old-world charm which can immediately be felt by the 19th-century aedicule at the entrance. Everything about Kalos Charm feels luxurious, from the velvet upholstery to the elegant bathrooms. It’s also in a fantastic position, between Piazza Navona and Piazza di Spagna – two of the most famous squares in the city. And while it’s a decent size, and can hold four people, Maurizio and Fabio have a few other places in the same building, so a larger group could look into renting out more than one at a time.

The palazzo that houses this apartment is something to behold. It's a wonderfully historic building that backs onto a little square and housed renowned American expressionist painter Cy Twombly for a good part of his later life. Once inside, the apartment is simple and traditional but elegant. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Explore the labyrinth of streets and you'll find yourself a few minutes' walk from the River Tiber, a five-minute stroll from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 550 metres from the stunning Piazza Navona.

This apartment sits within a former palace on one of central Rome’s ancient streets. A short walk away (350 metres), you’ll find Castel Sant’Angelo and it’s just 750 metres from the endless museums of The Vatican. Habitat has a lot going for it. Beyond the incredible location (Via di Monserrato is considered one of the most beautiful streets in the city), it’s in good condition, has high ceilings, excellent parquet floors, and whitewashed ceiling beams. The kitchen brings the average down a little – you wouldn’t want to plan on cooking a dinner party in there – but apart from that, it’s a very comfortable, practical flat.

And on this seven-minute route to your apartment, awe continues at home.

Arriving at this traditional 'via', the orange block stands out against the green leaves of the desert-like foliage lining the street. But while the exterior has a fairly understated facade, this is what really allows for the decor to pop. We recommend pouring yourself a glass of primitivo while you take a look around.

High ceilings, art in gilded frames adorning the walls, floral accents, and a shimmering chandelier create a sense of Italian opulence. But we love the quirkiness from the enourmous painting of a tiger and the trompe l'oeil marble fireplace – painted by the creative owner of this home. Take the rest of the bottle out to the sunny balcony, where you can peer out to the inner courtyard while the trees gently rustle in the breeze.

Once owned by famous painter Albert Jill, this apartment lies in the heart of Rome. The decor is a bit dated and children and toddlers aren't permitted, but we think friends or families with older children will settle right in. The wi-fi isn't the strongest in all rooms so it's perhaps not the best for remote working, but Jill's unique art adorns the walls and the location is wonderful. You'll be on a quiet cobblestone street, but you may still hear some non-disruptive outside noise from the city. Within walking distance, you'll find an array of shops, restaurants, and attractions like the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, with public transport nearby for getting around.

Portal doesn’t try to do anything out of the ordinary. Rather, it takes the basics of a good flat and ensures that they are all spot on. The end result is a bright flat, with high ceilings, some original features and decent furniture. The acrylic Kartell chairs contrast nicely with the largely traditional vibe, and while the kitchen could stand to be redone, it’s still functional. Finally, it’s worth mentioning how fantastic the location is. Both Campo de’ Fiori market and Piazza Navona are nearby, and the streets are an excellent example of the city’s medieval architecture.

It’s rare for a city home to deliver on quite so many fronts as this charming apartment in Rome’s historic Parione neighbourhood. The location, on an enchanting street between Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps, feels brilliantly Roman, while in the home, vintage stylings meet modern comforts in elegant fashion. There’s so much to see within a short walk. Castel Sant'Angelo, St. Angelo Bridge and Piazza Navona are all five minutes on foot, while the Pantheon is ten minutes. If you fancy a spot of shopping, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is an eight-minute saunter. A little further on, St. Peter's Basilica and the Trevi Fountain are both around fifteen minutes. The Vatican Museums and the Roman Forum, on the other hand, are a twenty-five-minute stroll (or a ten-minute ride).

There's much more than meets the eye when it comes to this Roman retreat. Behind its historic facade lies a striking modern apartment over two levels, recently renovated and so quirky you'll want to start taking photos before you've unpacked. Location-wise, it couldn't get much better, with Piazza Navona and the Pantheon within an easy ten-minute walk. You'll enter through a traditional shared courtyard, bursting with historic features, but as soon as you open the front door you'll spot the complex, architect-designed interior – complete with structural steels, a clever mezzanine level in the building's loft and all sorts of surprising features. Think glass sections in the mezzanine floor, a metal staircase, studio workspace, angular windows and space-age lighting. But it's practical too, with everything you'll need for a comfortable stay.

A short stroll from Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona, this apartment is perfectly located for exploring Rome. It’s ideal for a family that won’t mind the sleeping arrangements, with one guest sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room and one sleeping on an additional sofa bed in the main bedroom. Given its third-floor position, you’ll all need to be able to climb stairs – and you might want to travel light. The exposed wooden beams and traditional decor make this a charming base for seeing the sights of the Eternal City.

Horse-Drawn feels like a real home. It’s bright and welcoming, and as it’s been designed as a place to live, rather than one to rent, you don’t get the glitches that sometimes pop up in the latter. It also means that the kitchen is really well equipped – it's easy enough to whip up a decent meal to be enjoyed as a group in the charming, light-filled dining room. There are a few signs of age on the walls and floor, but these don’t detract in any way from the overall environment. In fact, we think that's what makes this 17th-century home – take in the original features from the get-go. Whether you're enjoying a good book by the fireplace or eating lunch under the exposed beams, you'll feel immersed in the heart of the world's most ancient city. We love how the pops of purple and green, abstract artwork and book-filled shelves make this spot so cosy and inviting after a day spent sightseeing. With the Castel Sant'Angelo and Piazza Navona right around the corner, as well as Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps under a twenty-minute walk away, the delights of Rome are right at your doorstep.

Location is where Noon Herald sets itself apart. It’s at the centre of a triangle that has the Vatican, Piazza Navona, and Trastevere as its points. The other big draw is the structure of the flat, with a double-height ceiling and the sloping beams – these help balance out the slightly spartan furniture elsewhere. It would be a good place for someone who is more used to hotels, as there are several services that are more commonly associated with them, such as daily bed turning and clean towels on request.

The terraces of this beautiful apartment overlook Piazza Navona, a lively square of gothic architecture and a neoclassical fountain at its heart. Cafés and restaurants spill onto the pavement and you can watch the street artists from your nest on high. It’s a real suntrap too, so loungers have been set up alongside the dining table and outdoor sofa. Inside, terracotta tiles and high ceilings create a cooling escape from the city heat, and houseplants stand out against pristine white walls. A little 60s-style bar in the living room is the best place to knock up an evening cocktail as you put your favourite song on the wireless speaker.  Don’t worry about navigating your way to the Pantheon (a five-minute stroll) or the Roman Forum and Colosseum (a fifteen-minute walk) as the host provides a smartphone with unlimited international calls and internet, so you can stream maps and call a taxi without any hassle.

From Dusk Herald, the Vatican, Piazza Navona and Trastevere are all easily reachable on foot. You’ve also got the Tiber just around the corner – it’s hard to overstate just how well-placed the flat is. Inside it’s simple, but with a pretty wooden ceiling upstairs, and lots of light. The kitchen is a little beige, but we did like the geometric wallpaper. We also noticed a lot of birdsong coming through the windows, which added a lovely, bucolic feel to the place.

This is a gem of a home for anyone who has a love and appreciation for all that 16th-century Rome had to offer. Built centuries ago by a Roman aristocrat, the space has been beautifully preserved and restored; with the abundance of art, antiques and space, you really get a sense of how high society lived. Stepping into the grand living room, you'll be struck by the original Renaissance ceilings and ornamented fireplace. Pick from a coffee table magazine or, better still, head to the refined library area in the room next door for an extensive literature collection and settle down for an afternoon read amid regal furnishings and adornments. Through to the bedrooms, and it's much of the same elegance and sophistication found in the rest of the home, albeit with an art deco and modern influence that we really love – and a special mention to the glorious marble en-suite bathroom. Guests in search of an added sense of luxury can also request cooks and daily live-in help – the building has a concierge too. You won't need to lift so much as a finger here. Located in a typical, quiet street under ten minutes from the Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori - fruit and veg market by day, trendy drinking spot by night - you've got a wealth of upscale shops and traditional restaurants, not to mention historic points of interest, right on your doorstep.

Located in a narrow street between Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Navona, Kalos is a great home if you want to explore Rome on foot. The insides of this home are immaculate and in spite of mixing several different styles, they create an atmosphere of comfort and luxury. You'll get a beautiful view of the city's skyline from the windows, and if you like an alfresco coffee in the morning, Kalos boasts not one, but two balconies. Take note –three of the five guests will be sleeping in the master bedroom without privacy between the two beds.

The understatement on display in this historic house allows some of the warm, textural elements of the design – like the exposed beam ceiling, tiled floors and concrete steps – to sing. Set within a stunning fifteenth-century building, the home is spread over three floors, accessible via a beautiful spiral staircase that eventually emerges in between the three bedrooms up on the second floor. The interior is a largely pared-back affair, with a definite nod to Scandinavian simplicity, but without veering into the impersonal. While the Tiber isn’t actually visible from the front door, but it’s only one street over, and the Castel Sant’Angelo is just a few minutes' walk on the other bank. Elsewhere, you're around five minutes from the ever-popular Piazza Navona and ten to the lively morning market in Campo de' Fiori.

This historic home in the centre of the Italian capital offers an authentic Roman experience, with original terracotta floors, wood-beamed ceilings and views over the ancient Arco dei Banchi. All this charm, and it's less than a fifteen-minute walk to the Pantheon. What's not to like?

Parchment Scrolls oozes classical Roman style. There’s a wonderful mix of antique elements, like the ceiling beams or the painted doors, and more modern fittings that give it a sense of balance. It’s also in a fantastic position, in the cobblestone lanes of Ponte, and right opposite the grand Church of San Biagio. All of these blessings manage to outweigh the only real problem, which is the second bathroom. It doesn’t have the best ventilation, and the shower is only 190cm high, but we think that it’s forgivable given the rest of the space.

You'll find this home nestled perfectly in the heart of Ponte and within walking distance of the 15th-century Palazzo Altemps, the Museo Nazionale Romano, and Piazza Navona. Swing by to taste-test the delectable array of dishes at the trattorias around the Fountain of the Four Rivers and find hidden vintage gems in the indie boutiques that line the quaint surrounding streets.

Inside, you'll find a sleek and contemporary interior, with a sociable open-plan living space bathed in natural light. Elsewhere in your apartment, you'll have a well-equipped kitchen, a dining area and three good-size bedrooms, each with an en-suite. With the main sitting area in the expansive master suite, along with bookshelves and a mini-fridge, you could well end up using this as your lounge. And it's plenty grand enough, with its elegant, frescoed ceiling and dual windows.

Step outside and you'll be within striking distance of Piazza Navona, with its fountain and bars, and from all sorts of museums, shops and eateries. And don't miss the open-air Campo de' Fiori market – just a five-minute walk away.

A Certain Prestige

Situated a two-minute walk from Campo de' Fiori, one of Rome’s main piazzas, this apartment is ideal for first-time and frequent travellers alike. The city’s best bits are within walking distance – the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and Roman Forum are around thirty minutes away. While some elements of this home are a little dated, everything functions well, and the place is clean and comfortable. Just a heads up, the street below can get noisy at times, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re easily awoken.

The classical design of Shortbread, with the columns and arches, might not be to everyone’s taste, but you can’t deny that it takes the theme and runs with it. If you are keen on the style, then you end up with a great-value flat, in one of the most beautiful areas of the city.
