Just keep in mind that the kitchen lacks an oven or a hob, so it's only suitable for preparing light bites. That said you're in the heart of Italy, so eating out will definitely be on the cards here. The bathrooms are well-designed and metro tiled, while the kitchen’s equipped for home meals – but you’re in one of the restaurant hotspots (as if anywhere in Rome isn’t a restaurant hotspot), and there are some great places to eat very nearby. Visit the Castel Sant'Angelo for a cultural day trip, just ten minutes (on foot) from your front door or head to the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, less than a twenty-minute walk away.

You’ll need it after a day in the city, with the Vatican a ten-minute walk in one direction and Castel Sant’Angelo in the other.

There are bars, restaurants and shops all within a stone’s throw of the apartment building, and the Lepanto metro station is a mere eight-minute walk away so when you’re ready to see the sights, it’s as easy as can be. 

Start your day by tucking into pastries and coffee on the terrace. There are glorious views of the Vatican, which is just a twenty-four-minute walk away. Watch the streets below come to life while you plan how you’ll spend your stay. After visiting the Vatican and St Peter’s Basilica, perhaps you’ll stroll to Sant’Angelo Bridge – it’s nineteen minutes away. Decide which of the restaurants you pass you’ll return to for dinner, and definitely indulge in a scoop or two of gelato. 

Depending on your stamina, everything is within walking distance but in those peak summer months, you’ll be grateful for how easy it is to explore on the metro. The one-bedroom apartment sleeps up to four, thanks to a sofa bed in the lounge, and this one is mainly decked out in red and black. High ceilings and a brick-effect wall make for a bright, fun place to put your feet up at the end of the day, and we particularly love the neon sign and touches of Americana. Meanwhile, the other apartment is an ode to monochrome, with modern, designer furniture and a minimalist feel. Both have open-plan living spaces with dining tables and fully-equipped kitchens, and both have sleek, stylish bathrooms.

Just a short stroll from the nearest Metro station, it's just a couple of stops to the centre of the city, a twelve-minute walk across the bridge to Piazza del Popolo, or a half-hour walk to Vatican City.

It's situated in the upmarket district of Prati, which serves as something of a corporate hub during the week. Its grand sweeping boulevards and beautiful art nouveau buildings mean that it shouldn't be ignored. However, it seems to fly under the radar of most visitors, so you can browse the exclusive boutiques that line Cola di Rienzo (300m away) unbothered by gaggles of tourists. Step off the main thoroughfare and you'll discover low-key neighbourhood haunts and cool kerbside cafes where you can while away an afternoon over a long lunch.

While you can’t actually see the Vatican walls from Three Stags, turn right out of the door and walk about twenty metres and they’re right there. It’s a great location, which is fitting as it’s a great flat. Rather than seeking to preserve a crumbling old flat, Valeria’s recently redone the whole place, updating it without losing the character of the original place. There’s tonnes of space, given that it only has one bedroom, so having a couple of extra people sleeping in the living room is no problem (though three might be a squeeze).


Three Stags

Part of the joy of visiting Rome is being in the thick of things – busy side-street eateries, crowds clamouring to see the sights, and dodging Vespas as you explore the city. This property is in the perfect location.

There are two apartments, making this ideal for groups of friends who want some space. The first is decorated with an eye-catching nod to Pop Art and street artists like Banksy, while the second taps into the romance of Rome with soft pastel shades and an elegant feel. 

You’re close enough to everything to explore on foot, but for those days when the heat is a little too much, you’ll be glad to be a three-minute walk from the Lepanto metro stop. You’re also in an area rife with restaurants, cafes and bars, so you don’t need to travel far for an exquisite meal or a chilled glass of wine. 

We like to start our day with a spot of people watching. Walk twelve minutes to Piazza del Popolo for a cappuccino with a view. From there, maybe you’ll tick off the Trevi Fountain – it’s fifteen minutes on the metro  – or meander the twenty-two minutes to the Spanish Steps. The Roman Forum is thirty-six minutes from the apartment – you’ll want to spend at least a couple of hours there, so pop into a trattoria for a pizza on the way. 

After a busy day in the bustling city, you’ll be glad to return to the apartment. Crack open a cold beer on the balcony in the late afternoon to soak up the atmosphere. After a brief respite, you’ll be ready to hit the town again.

Even though it’s actually quite new, Vintage Rosa feels like it could be from the 50s (can you tell from the name?). In a good way, that is – it has a great balance of the old-fashioned aesthetic and modern fittings, so you won’t be stuck with sixty-year-old kitchen appliances. The whole building is run in the space between a hotel and a block of flats, as there’s more than enough to keep you independent, but you also get some extra services included, like cleaning every other day, and a reception during working hours.

This second-floor apartment in a Prati building dating back to the 1940s illustrates how to incorporate some eccentricity into a home's interior design without going overboard. Colourful pieces of artwork, gold motifs and boldly patterned feature walls pop off satisfyingly against the white walls, while the silverback gorilla in the living room is a playful addition. The kitchen and bathrooms play it relatively simple in comparison but are equally notable for their high quality — we especially liked the whirlpool bathtub. The location is another plus point in our books. Castel Sant'Angelo and the surrounding Parco della Mole Adriana are only ten minutes' walk away, while Vatican City takes about a quarter of an hour to reach on foot.

You can’t visit Rome without visiting the Vatican City – luckily this stylish abode is just a five-minute stroll to St. Peter's Square. It’s also only a ten-minute walk to the Vatican Museums, as well as Castel Sant'Angelo with its large roof terrace offering breathtaking views across the city. Right on this apartment’s street, there’s a range of restaurants, gelaterias and cafés to choose from – we think this is a wonderful location. After all that sightseeing, you’ll need somewhere super comfortable to return to. If you don’t fancy eating out for dinner, cook some pasta and enjoy at the dining table, next to the window with views across the neighbourhood. The bedrooms, with little touches like the distressed metal lights, and warm parquet floors, make for a charming retreat. So, when in Rome, if you want the perfect setting, combined with a comfortable home, look no further.

Nestled just outside of Vatican City, this lovingly decorated home has a certain vintage feel that really is warm and welcoming, with a home away from home kind of feel. Boasting light and airy open spaces, comfortable furnishings and convenient locations, this home really is an ideal rest stop for intrepid adventures aching to get out and experience this beautiful city. We highly recommend making the most of the local Metro stations to get the most out of your stay. Check out other neighbourhoods and see more of Rome by hopping on a train at either Ottaviano, San Pietro, Musei Vaticani Station, a short three-minute walk away, or Lepanto Station, which can be found nine minutes away from the home.

Situated under a ten-minute stroll from Piazza del Popolo, this apartment has a great location. You’ll also be within walking distance of a variety of museums, the Spanish Steps, and Villa Borghese.  In fact, you can see the park of Villa Borghese from this home’s large terrace thanks to its fifth-floor location in a historic building. The stylish open-plan living room is a great place to relax and it also accommodates one guest on a sofa bed at full capacity. This is a great base for your Eternal City visit.

Despite only being a twenty-three-minute walk from the Vatican, this is a cute and surprisingly calming flat. It's housed in an early 20th-century building with heaps of Roman character, and yet modern and cosy inside with its playful pink colour scheme, light wood flooring and tasteful artwork.  After an afternoon taking in the delights of St. Peter's Basilica, devouring all sorts of pizza and limoncello-based drinks, return to the light and airy living space with a chic pink dining table at its core – perfect for coming together for a well-needed cuppa and a slice of a cake. Sitting down to relive the best parts of the day, you'll notice the low-hanging lighting, antique mirrors and retro drinks trolley in the corner. This home cuts no corners when it comes to the little touches. Wandering into the bedrooms you'll find original patterns and vibrant wallpaper prints that remind us of a bygone era. Those lucky enough to be residing in the master bedroom will have the luxury of a private dining table for those romantic morning coffees in bed. Well-rested and full of caffeine, discover the tranquillity and local vibe of the surrounding area. Bordering the River Tiber's west bank, Prati is an art nouveau neighbourhood with alfresco wine bars, stylish cocktail lounges and fine-dining restaurants dotted around its relatively tourist-free boulevards.

Libraries might be out of fashion, but they’ll always hold a special place in our heart. And a home library like La Politica Dell'Autore’s doesn’t come around every day. It’s kind of spectacular, with bookcases lining the entire living room, making the space feel a little bit magical. The small terrace, practically overflowing with plants complements that feeling. The kitchen, unfortunately, is a bit basic, but luckily there are plenty of restaurants in Prati, so you’ll just have to go and sample the local cuisine.

This intimate apartment makes a fantastic base for couples and solo travellers to explore Rome on foot. World-famous hotspots like the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and the picturesque Villa Borghese can reached in around twenty minutes or less, and nearby bus stops ensure you won't miss a thing. This home maintains a delicate balance of traditional charm and modern style, from the painted mural above the bed to the minimalist living space. While the kitchenette has a hob, you won't find an oven here. Worry not though, as you only have to walk steps to sample some of Rome's most inviting restaurants and cafes.

Clean and minimalist are often used as euphemisms for uninspirational and bland – a safe choice that won’t offend but won’t excite either. However, your host Luca has managed the not insignificant task of creating a simple, calm interior that still manages to evoke emotion. It’s also practical – with two bathrooms, it feels like the sofa bed is a feasible option rather than thrown in to inflate the guest count. The location is a twenty-minute walk from the Vatican and convenient for exploring further afield on the metro, with the likes of the Colosseum within a twenty-five-minute journey. With elegant buildings, neatly designed streets, and residential charisma, Prati mixes the charm of classic Rome with the pace of a bustling business district.
