Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

A quirky base in Rome, this home is the attic of a building, so sits amid Rome’s rooftops. This means there are a lot of stairs to climb – it’s not going to be suitable for everyone and isn’t recommended for children under the age of six. But if you can manage the stairs, you’re rewarded with a charming home-from-home. The apartment even boasts a private terrace – the perfect spot for alfresco dining – and is next to a chapel designed by Raphael in the 1500s. Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

It’s just over a five-minute stroll to a wide variety of eateries, while history lovers can visit Piazza di Santa Maria with its 12th-century basilica. If you want to check out some of Rome’s main attractions, the Trevi Fountain and Colosseum are around a half an hour walk or fifteen-minute ride away. Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. There's plenty within walking distance, from restaurants and shops to the River Tiber and the ancient Pantheon. Public transport is also nearby, making it easy to see the sights both near and far.

Step into the world of a local Roman in this home in Trastevere's desirable Orto Botanico neighbourhood. The Botanical Garden of Rome, the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica and the Ponte Sisto are a short walk away. You'll also find plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. So that's the location – what about the apartment? Well, first of all, there's a courtyard garden, perfect for a glass of wine after all that sightseeing. We also love that the main bedroom opens out onto the patio and that both bedrooms are en-suite. The second bedroom has a desk, too, if you need to catch up on emails while in Rome. This home is ideal for leisure or business travellers.

Milliner has a history as a family home – Olimpia actually grew up here – and as such it’s got a bit of soul to it. It’s been designed to last, and many of the pieces of furniture have a sense of intransigence to them, from the tree boughs to the wicker and the collection of books. The space is slightly lopsided, as most of it feels quite large, but the second bedroom is definitely undersized, but this is really just a quibble. It’s a welcoming, genuine place.

Grab yourself a big slice of Roman life at this immaculate river view apartment, just around the corner from the iconic piazza of Campo di Fiori. Home to one of the city's best-known markets and, by night, buzzing bars and restaurants, this square delivers all the Italian charms you're chasing.

You can easily blaze a trail to Rome's biggest sights from here, too, including the Colosseo (half-an-hour on foot) and even closer, the Patheon (a fifteen-minute walk). Or ditch the crowds and hop over the bridge to Trastevere's atmospheric alleyways to seek out a nonna-esque trattoria for dinner. 

Back home, this newly renovated apartment feels like the perfect little hideaway after days amongst the city's hustle and bustle. Put your feet up in the light-filled living space – the leafy vistas reaching out to the River Tiber through the dual-aspect windows are a joy. While over in the two boutique-feel bedrooms, guests sharing will love the privacy of the separate ensuite bathrooms. And despite its central location, both rooms feel surprisingly quiet at night, so you can bank a good night's kip here. While for those planning to work or study during your stay, there's a handy desk space in one of the bedrooms with a charming view to boot.

With a combination of old-fashioned furniture and modern flourishes, Silk Road manages to retain an understanding of Rome’s history without getting bogged down in recreating the past. It’s not a simple balancing act, and for the most part, Silk Road pulls it off. And, as should go without saying, having the Pantheon about 100m away is not to be sniffed at (as long as you can handle the tourists that accompany it).

Location, location, location! This apartment is a perfect base for exploring the very best of the Eternal City. Your Roman retreat is right in the heart of the historical centre, on a beautiful cobbled street no more than a fifteen-minute amble away from Campo de' Fiori, Piazza Navona, and charming Trastevere. Perhaps most importantly, you're just off Via Giulia – a roughly half-mile-long cobbled street that's lined from end to end with beautiful churches, elegant palazzi, maze-like antique shops, and some of the fanciest homes in Rome. It's also well-equipped with eateries – I Sofà Bar Restaurant & Roof Terrace is set to impress with great views and even better food or you can rub shoulders with Rome's great and good at specialist seafood establishment Assunta Madre. If the idea of a quiet night in appeals, the high-end appliances in the kitchen have got you covered, while the home cinema in the double room is ideal for watching legendary Fellini films from the comfort of your bed.

The palazzo that houses this apartment is something to behold. It's a wonderfully historic building that backs onto a little square and housed renowned American expressionist painter Cy Twombly for a good part of his later life. Once inside, the apartment is simple and traditional but elegant. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Explore the labyrinth of streets and you'll find yourself a few minutes' walk from the River Tiber, a five-minute stroll from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 550 metres from the stunning Piazza Navona.

This third-floor apartment is perfectly placed for getting to know Rome, boasting a private balcony overlooking the street. There is the potential for some noise and parking outside may be tricky, but you'll have public transport nearby and attractions like the Basilica of Santa Maria are an easy walk away. The kitchen is fully equipped but quite small, and storage throughout is limited so we think it's best for short breaks or work trips. At full capacity, two guests will sleep on the comfy sofa bed, and your host can provide a free cot and high chair to make travelling with little ones a breeze.

Nestled in the heart of Rome, this apartment is all about the location. It’s just a short walk to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain – all of the city's must-see sights. That said, while the traditional style may not be everyone’s cup of tea and some areas could benefit from a refresh, we love the added extras here. The living room projector promises an authentic movie night experience, while the terrace is just the spot to enjoy an evening aperitif. There's even a desk in the loft if you're in town on business. Just keep in mind the third bedroom is very small, so a maximum of five adults are allowed.

The Charms of Rome

Since 1869, the Campo de' Fiori has been a hub of market trading for fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers. And by evening, this charming square becomes a hub of alfresco dining spots and wine bars. With that in mind, this studio apartment is pretty convenient, at less than a minute away. But if you want to keep busy rather than relaxing with a glass of chianti, you’ll find palaces, museums, and statues all around – such as the Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, two minutes away. However, we feel that this home is somewhat of a landmark itself. As you step inside, you can help but be taken aback by the striking timber ceiling. These thick, rustic beams ooze old-world Italy, transporting you back in time. But with modern twists from minimalist furniture and quirky artworks, there’s an elegant clash of eras which makes this studio feel unique. We love the luxe touches like the marble kitchen sink and bathroom, although your host can provide an even better VIP experience. After being picked up by your private driver from the airport, you might fancy taking up their offer of a wine tasting tour or ride on a classic Vespa.

Habitat has a lot going for it. Beyond the incredible location (Via di Monserrato is considered one of the most beautiful streets in the city), it’s in good condition, has high ceilings, excellent parquet floors, and whitewashed ceiling beams. The kitchen brings the average down a little – you wouldn’t want to plan on cooking a dinner party in there – but apart from that, it’s a very comfortable, practical flat.

You'll be impressed with the views of the Santa Barbara dei Librari seen from the windows of this newly renovated apartment. But you'll love this home's location even more. Set in the heart of the historic district, overlooking the atmospheric square Largo dei library, all the must-see sights are walkable from here.

Get off to a flying start with a hefty dose of Roman life around the corner at Campo de Fiori (a three-minute walk) –⁠ by day, the piazza hosts one of the city's best-known markets, and by night, its bars and restaurants keep the night flowing. Or do like the locals with early-evening passeggiatas along the postcard-pretty River Tiber, it's just a four-minute walk from your door.

Back at home, this modern apartment housed in an ancient Roman villa of mighty proportions makes quite the first impression with its floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural daylight and revealing charming scenes of the pretty piazza below.

The designers have cleverly used the height of those lofty, exposed beam ceilings to create a nifty mezzanine level that houses the second bedroom. Meanwhile, strategically-placed house plants and contemporary artwork warm the loft-style space. When thoughts turn to food, you can easily rustle up a  bite to eat in the smart kitchen area. Though with so many trattorias waiting right outside your door, we wouldn't blame you if you ate out every day instead.

This characterful little apartment lies right in the heart of one of Rome’s oldest neighbourhoods. Its location is second to none – with plenty of lively bars and restaurants on your doorstep and the Pantheon just around the corner, you’re right in the middle of all the action. Though some parts of the apartment, such as the entrance and bathroom, may feel a little rough around the edges, we think it adds to the charm. It’s a great home away from home to explore everything this magnificent city has to offer.

This apartment in the Testaccio neighbourhood of Rome is a shining example of a somewhere we'd be more than happy to stay in the Italian capital. Quite literally in the case of the gleaming chequerboard tiling, parquet-style flooring and black marble in the master bathroom, which reflect the light beautifully and make this home feel gloriously light. The open-concept kitchen-dining area feels geared towards shared mealtimes, which is only appropriate given the locale's reputation as a gastronomic hotspot. Stroll over to Testaccio's glass-roofed market in under ten minutes and pick up some fresh ingredients for a home-prepared feast. Alternatively, if you're feeling lazy — or intrepid, however you want to frame it — there are a wide choice of restaurants nearby from which to take your pick.

Being so central, there's a chance for noise, but we think it's worth the trade to be in the heart of the action. Space is a little tight with the double sofa bed in use, but you'll likely have minimal downtime if sightseeing is your priority. It's worth noting that the bedroom doesn't have an actual door – just a curtain – and that the kitchen is compact. But that aside, the contemporary finishes and prime position make this a great choice for a Roman getaway.

The study (or second bedroom) overlooks the vines of Rome’s Botanic Gardens, as though you’re in Tuscany or Chianti rather than the hip suburb of Trastevere. Bars and local trattoria fills the buzzing streets, but this apartment is a haven of calm amidst it all. The interior is a modern medley of soft green and grey, while the exterior boasts the traditional wooden shutters of medieval Italy. Big, arched doors in the master bedroom open up to a private terrace, dappled with greenery and set up with a couple of deckchairs and a drinks table. There’s also a terrace off the living room, with dining for four – perfect for an aperitivo before hitting the bars of Trastevere.

Charming and cosy, you'll find this apartment in the centre of Rome, just around the corner from Campo de' Fiori and its morning market. Whether you're in the mood for museums and art galleries or bars and boutiques, this spot promises many Roman adventures – your host can even arrange guided tours and culinary experiences for you. If sightseeing is on your to-do list, you're in luck – Piazza Navona (a seven-minute walk), the Pantheon (eleven minutes on foot), the Trevi Fountain (walkable in eighteen) and the Colosseum (a twenty-three-minute stroll) are all within easy reach.

After exploring, come home to this characterful flat, where beamed wooden ceilings, traditional tile floors and vintage furniture create an authentic ambience. Halfway between Trastevere and Campo de’ Fiori, and footsteps from the banks of the River Tiber, this apartment is enviably located. Inside, the place has been tastefully finished with relaxation in mind. Furnishings in rich brown are complemented by pops of teal and subtle gold accents. There’s a comfy L-shaped sofa that calls for reclining with a good book and a dining nook should you fancy taking your meals at home. Take a walk through Rome’s historic streets. You’ll reach the Spada Gallery and the old-school trattorias of Via del Pellegrino in five minutes by foot, the Moor Fountain in ten and the Pantheon in fifteen. To reach the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, catch a taxi and arrive in just over ten minutes or opt to wander through the city and reach them in a leisurely thirty.
