It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. Then there’s a somewhat contemporary Scandi look, with minimalist bedspreads, stepped bed frames, and modern, white shelved walls. These shelves are packed with literature and art books. Take your pick from the collection and perch in the study – with its twisted gold column, hardwood furnishings, and vintage typewriter, you’ll feel every bit the European intellectual. A stroll in the immediate neighbourhood will take you to jewellery boutiques and hidden wine bars for a glass of barolo. Before we even arrived at Soft Shading, we were struck by the location. It’s so close to the Trevi fountain that the only danger is you’ll end up stuck among all the tourists. It’s very new inside, and the modern fittings contrast nicely with some of the original structural features, like the ceilings. The only drawback is the slightly inadequate living room, upstairs, and without space for a full house, but as it’s right in the middle of the city, you won’t be spending much time in.

This modern apartment has the best of historic Rome right on the doorstep. You can walk to the Spanish Steps in five minutes, the Trevi fountain in ten, and the Colosseum in thirty. In such a central location, you'll have your pick of authentic trattorias and buzzing bars. But if you prefer to unwind at home after a day on your feet, the open-plan kitchen and dining area is ideal for preparing home-cooked dinners. And if you need to catch up on work, the dining table doubles up nicely as a desk, too.

Soft colours anchor Centurion Flax’s interior – a savvy decision that prevents anything from overshadowing the beautiful frescoes on the ceiling. As a whole, it’s a relaxing, grown-up place, never brash, and with an air of quality to the furniture and fittings. There’s also a small balcony, looking out onto Via Palermo, but it’s too small to spend a lot of time outside. Besides, there are so many interesting bars and cafes around that if you were after aperitivo or breakfast, you aren’t short of options.

Aperitivo might have a small footprint, but it’s unusual in that it’s a real house, spread over three floors, from the ground to the (magical) roof terrace. It’s been put together with a lot of care – this much is evident – and a lot of the furniture has been cleverly made from repurposed materials, such as the chest of drawers that used to be an old trunk. Finding this sort of place in the middle of Monti isn’t easy, and we’re very happy to have come across Aperitivo.

Climb the original marble staircase up to the top of this elegant eighteenth-century palazzo for a whole new perspective on the Eternal City from your incredible penthouse pad. This modern apartment has been designed to make the most of its stunning setting. There's a massive wall of glass in the stylish living room, bedrooms that open up directly onto terraces, and plenty of outdoor furniture so that you can enjoy Rome's vibrant atmosphere any time of day or night. The undoubted star of the show is the incredible rooftop terrace, complete with a vast seating area and sun canopy, Jacuzzi, and dining area. We can't think of any reason not to spend every waking hour up here. When you can tear yourself away to explore the charismatic capital, you'll find yourself right in the thick of things at the Piazza Venezia end of Via del Corso, Rome's main shopping street. Seven minutes' walk will get you to postcard-perfect sights like the Trevi Fountain and Pantheon. At the same time, you can reach the ancient Roman site on Palatine Hill in fifteen minutes. Of course, those tempting boutiques might add an hour or two to those walking times. 

Three Coins in the Fountain

Base yourself in Monti, one of Rome's coolest neighbourhoods. You'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and many independent eateries, putting you within easy reach of all Rome has to offer. The apartment is bright and cosy. Design-wise, it's a bit eclectic, but it's welcoming. There's also a sofa bed for two. That said, the highlight is the balcony and its sweeping views. Just sit back with a coffee or a glass of wine and take in the panoramas of the historic city centre.

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Rome, this contemporary pad is in a pretty unbeatable location. The city's endless array of restaurants, shops and museums are a short walk away, but that's not the only reason we love this neighbourhood. You can wander to the Trevi Fountain in six minutes, stroll through the tremendous Villa Borghese in ten, and shop for provincial produce in Campo de' Fiori in twenty-five minutes, flat. Gives a whole new meaning to the saying 'when in Rome', doesn't it?

After a busy day of sightseeing, pour yourself a glass of red wine and unwind with some locally-sourced gastronomic goodies in the open-plan living area. Decorated in soft cream shades and featuring sumptuous sofas and traditionally-shuttered windows, the lounge radiates relaxation and charm. The kitchen isn't the biggest in our collection, but it's well-equipped if you're in the mood to rustle up a light breakfast or quick lunch. Meanwhile, the bedrooms are comfortable and cosy – just the ticket following a long afternoon on your feet. We think it's an ideal laid-back getaway in Italy's buzzing capital.

The Spanish Steps are only three minutes away on foot, and you need only walk seven minutes to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain. The apartment is on the fourth floor of the building, so you’ll be able to admire a view of the city’s rooftops from the terrace. This loft apartment is warm and welcoming, with a chic, open layout. The bedroom is at mezzanine level above the living and dining space, so you’ll need to be able to manage the stairs to stay here. 

The Ancient Palazzo

In a quiet backstreet just off the legendary Via Vittorio Veneto, this apartment would make an excellent retreat for a couple visiting Rome. It’s an eight-minute walk to the Spanish Steps, and less than ten minutes on foot to the Trevi Fountain. The elegant decor of this studio apartment will certainly have you tossing three coins in the fountain, hoping to return. Exposed beams and stonework create a sense of the building’s history. The stylish kitchen area with its sleek breakfast bar illuminated by Edison bulbs is particularly spacious for a studio in central Rome. Although there’s no door between the bedroom area and living area, an archway and the generally large floorspace makes it feel like a one-bed rather than a studio.

This apartment's address is perfect if you want to be within walking distance of some of Rome’s key landmarks. The Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and the Roman Forum are just a few to mention. You’ll also have plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants on your doorstep. Another highlight of the home, in our opinion, is the terrace with its fire pit, barbecue and dining area. This great outdoor space is accessed from the modern and stylish open-plan living room. And if you need to work while away, two of the comfy bedrooms have desks. We think this apartment has everything you need for your Eternal City stay.

Tranquillity awaits at this whimsical Italian apartment, which you’ll find tucked away down a quiet backstreet in Monti, one of Rome’s most eclectic neighbourhoods. 

Featuring high ceilings and immaculate wooden floors, this is the perfect place to unwind after a day of work or play in Italy's Eternal City.  We particularly love the open-plan living area here and could see ourselves spending hours around the dining table, enjoying a bowl of fresh pasta alfredo and sharing a bottle of dry Frascati wine with our fellow guests. And when night falls, what better place to drift off than the secluded master bedroom, which comes with its very own ensuite bathroom, ideal if you’re after a bit of extra privacy. 

The interior’s not the only thing worth writing home about here though. With the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and the Basilica of Saint Mary Major all within easy walking distance, this place is perfectly situated for exploring the city. Tick off the major tourist attractions or stick to the streets of Monti, whiling away the hours in one of its trendy wine bars or vintage boutiques. However you decide to spend your time, we think you'll agree there's no place quite like Rome. 

The Starling's Nest

This apartment boasts an unbeatable location in Rome, just above Piazza Barberini. Staying in such a central spot means you’ll be within walking distance of many of Rome’s most iconic attractions – the Trevi Fountain is only a few minutes away. You’ll also be perfectly placed to hit the shops. This is an excellent base for a family, with interconnected rooms and an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space. Heavy packers, be warned – there are quite a few stairs to tackle here. 

Barberini Bliss

Paquino is perfectly comfortable, and while it lacks a bit of flair in the design department, it’s pleasant to look at. None of this really matters though, because the big thing going for it is the position, right in the heart of Monti. There are loads of excellent restaurants around (although the kitchen is actually pretty good, easily enough for a decent meal) and you really are in the cobbled streets among the ancient ruins that define the city.

A Roman Reign

Tempus has pretty much everything going for it. Not only is it in the very centre of Monti (on a backstreet though, so it’s pretty quiet), but the design shows off a lovely mix of original brick archways and modern, almost industrial touches. The enormous kitchen island is a dream, and we haven’t come across many more inviting bathrooms than the little grotto here. It’s very bright, thanks to the plate glass windows, but these also bring about the only flaw we could find – you’re definitely in a bit of a fishbowl.

A three-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain, this apartment is the ideal place to stay whether you’re a first-time visitor to Rome or a return traveller. If you’re keen to venture outside your neighbourhood, the Barberini metro station is just up the road. Inside, the home has a fully equipped kitchen, a desk for remote workers and a Jacuzzi bathtub for soaking away the day. Plus, your host can provide private chef services and breakfast deliveries so you can spend more time with your feet up. 


A Note From Rome

Ideal for families and groups of friends, this apartment is a convenient base in Rome. It’s in a wonderful location just steps from Santa Maria Maggiore, close to all the attractions including the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and Piazza Venezia. The modern apartment has everything needed for a city break, with a fully-equipped kitchen – though with so many trattorias and cafes nearby, you might prefer to dine out. At full occupancy, one guest will sleep on a single sofa bed, which we think is best suited to a child.

Light pours in through the Juliet balcony, illuminating a modern, airy and minimalist space that we think has somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel to it. Find a calming spot perched on the elegant antique furnishings for a relaxing read in the afternoons. Outside, you're right in the thick of things here. A stone's, or should we say a coin's, throw from the Trevi Fountain (nine-minute walk) and a couple of kilometres stroll from the emblematic Colosseum – you really are fantastically placed. Bridging the gap between hotel and rental perfectly, this ever-so central apartment is just the ticket.

There’s no better way to embrace the history of Rome than to stay in a former 17th-century palace. This apartment’s building embraces the spirit of the “grandezza romana” with its ornate doorway just next to a local pizzeria and marble statues in the ancient stairwell. Stepping into the apartment itself you’re met with grand, high ceilings and a traditional parquet floor. Old double doors let the space flow from the living room, to the dining room and a bijou little kitchen. You’re in a prime location here too. Apart from the buzzing pizzeria literally on your doorstep, there is myriad local trattoria serving up plates of carbonara and tiramisu in the historic streets around you. It’s a seven-minute stroll to Piazza di Spanga (where the Spanish Steps are) and the Trevi Fountain is one minute's walk away, showing just how central this apartment is.

Set in a gorgeous 20th-century building only a five-minute walk from the Piazza di Spagna, this home delivers on location in spades. You're surrounded by mouth-watering restaurants, traditional cafes and upscale shops, not to mention all the museums, landmarks (including The Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain) and galleries within walking distance.
