At the edge of a nature reserve, in a picturesque Sicilian village, right on the sea – this villa has it all. The breathtaking Vendicari nature reserve is a twenty-four minute drive away, a paradise for birdwatching, where you’ll find hiking trails, pristine beaches, and blooming native plant life. Morning, afternoon or night, the garden is where you'll spend most of your time. You’ll have a private pool to swim in and will be just 30 metres from a small beach, with the slightly larger Scogliera Bianca just 200 metres away. Enjoy the sound of waves crashing to the shore from your poolside lounger, or stroll in the garden with a pre-dinner cocktail while the barbecue heats up. 

Noto's Oasis

Hidden among the olive trees of Syracuse, this home caught our eye with its seafront location and peaceful garden. It’s also a great base from which to explore the most stunning spots of the region – the Baroque cities of Syracuse and Noto are a short drive away, while the beaches of Avola and Fontane Bianche are also within easy reach. You will need a car here, but your host can help organise car rentals along with a range of excursions. And while the rooms are basic, we think most of your time will be spent outside, admiring the views from the jacuzzi.

Occupying a prime seaside position on Sicily's southeast coast, this stunning villa offers everything you could want for an Italian escape. A crisp and clean interior keeps things simple, which makes complete sense once you get your first glimpse of the view from the terrace.

This beautiful verandah leads directly off the l. It offers a shaded dining area, plenty of seating around its perimeter, and easy access to the sun loungers dotted about the lawn. A short stretch of rocky shoreline is all that separates you from the sea, making the lack of a swimming pool a non-issue, as you can simply take a few steps straight into the inviting azure sea when you want to cool off.

If you prefer to feel the sand between your toes, Spiaggia Fontane Bianche is just over a kilometre away. This popular spot offers fine golden sand and dazzling blue waters backed by a small selection of bars and restaurants, where you can dine on fresh Sicilian seafood as you look out over the ocean.

When you've had enough of topping up your tan for the day, why not drive the 16km to the historic city of Syracuse, known for its ancient ruins and the lovely island of Ortigia. In addition to the history, you'll uncover a spectacular selection of lively bars, traditional restaurants and plenty of shops to pick up a holiday memento or two.

An hour or so south, the charming Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa make for fascinating day trips. In addition, we'd recommend stepping back in time on a visit to the former fishing village of Marzamemi on Sicily's southern tip.

Back home, you'll be spoilt for choice in the amenities department. Take your pick between an infinity pool with sea views and a shallow relaxation pool, or unwind in the two Jacuzzis – one is on the roof terrace, the other just off the main suite. There's also a poolside bar, a massage cabana (you can hire a massage therapist for a fee), and an outdoor cinema area. Factor in the contemporary interiors and it's no surprise it caught our eye.

We love the interior's minimalist design aesthetic. Cloaked entirely in white, its contemporary and stylish decor is complemented by heaps of natural light, exuding coastal calm and creating a free-flowing ambience primed for relaxation. There are all the bells and whistles here for a want-for-nothing stay, including a fully equipped kitchen, though the real highlight is undoubtedly the outdoor space. Large whitewashed pillars support the covered terrace that wraps around the house. Fire up the audio system while you make drinks and snacks in the outdoor kitchen, or throw some meats on the barbecue for an alfresco lunch. 

The rooms inside are characterised by high ceilings and dark wooden beams that contrast with the whitewashed walls. Sleek, minimalist furniture is compounded by statement pieces: we love the sunken living area with the towering ultramarine ornamental fireplace. The villa is just 50 metres from the sea, and there are beautiful sandy beaches within easy reach. 

From the villa you are well placed to explore Sicily’s delights: the baroque town of Noto and Syracuse are both a twenty-five minute drive away, while the hamlet of Fontane Bianche is on your doorstep: home to beach bars, laidback restaurants and local shops.

We were big fans of the pool, thanks to it being bordered by rows of gorgeous tropical plants – perfect for ensuring privacy. And with the home looking out to the east, you'll want to wake up early at least once during your stay to catch a sunrise over the sea. In the local area, you'll of course find the gorgeous beach and plenty of eateries, while you're also a short drive from nature reserves, historical sites, and quaint fishing villages.
