As it so happens, this villa sits just above the sea in the region and you'll be grateful for the conservation effort as you gaze out at the scenery.

You probably won't be surprised to learn that it's very easy to embrace the alfresco lifestyle here. The swimming pool offers an inviting spot to cool off from the Mediterranean heat, while you can also cook up a storm in the outdoor kitchen and dine on the adjoining terrace, as well. When you've had enough of topping up your tan for the day, why not drive the 16km to the historic city of Syracuse, known for its ancient ruins and the lovely island of Ortigia. In addition to the history, you'll uncover a spectacular selection of lively bars, traditional restaurants and plenty of shops to pick up a holiday memento or two.

An hour or so south, the charming Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa make for fascinating day trips. In addition, we'd recommend stepping back in time on a visit to the former fishing village of Marzamemi on Sicily's southern tip.

Back home, you'll be spoilt for choice in the amenities department. This home is set within an idyllic garden with a jasmine-covered dining terrace and a private pool surrounded by fragrant citrus trees – add some to your gin and tonic. Inside, the furnishings are antique style and many have been restored by the owners, which is charming, but this place may not be for you if you prefer modern interiors.
