We don’t think there’s a better way to experience the ancient feel of Modica than with a stay at a historic stone home dating back to the 1500s. This home delivers that, along with a few 21st-century touches to keep things feeling luxurious. It’s in the heart of the city, where the narrow streets are home to chi-chi coffee shops and family-run restaurants serving Sicilian cuisine. You’ve even got a view of the ancient church next door from the terraced garden.

Set over stone terraces and patios, the garden is filled with verdant plants and cacti, and feels like a little oasis in the centre of town. Seats and sofas are shaded by olive trees, and there’s dining for the group by strings of fairylights. Then there’s the circular stone hot tub, shimmering like a jewel.

We know waking up early on holiday isn't always what you want to do, but we guarantee a stay in this 1900s townhouse will transform you into an early riser. Situated at a vantage point overlooking panoramic scenes of Modica, when you walk out onto the balcony and witness magnificent views of the light forming over the town, you'll be sure to feel energised for the day ahead. That's important as there's a lot to do and see in this stunning region of Sicily. 

Modica itself is a Unesco town with years of history to explore. Wander its wonderful streets and make sure to indulge in lots of chocolate here – the town has a 400-year tradition of Sicilian chocolate making. We recommend checking out the centrepiece of the town, the Duomo di San Giorgio, which is one of the most spectacular sights of Baroque architecture in Sicily. But if days walking around is too much, then why not spend a day at one of the fine beaches in this area? Sampieri is one of the most famous and it's only a twenty-eight-minute drive. No matter what you choose to do during the day, we guarantee you'll end up spending your evenings on this home's balcony watching the lights of Modica twinkle at night while sipping on a glass of something tasty. Nestled away in the Hyblean region of southern Siciliy, this farmhouse was recently treated to a four-year refurbishment that finished in 2021 and this hard work is immediately apparent as you take a tour around the buildings and the grounds.

We're full of praise for the way that period features have been retained alongside more contemporary features, which lead to super-sleek kitchens and bathrooms rubbing shoulders quite happily with patches of exposed stonework and wooden ceiling beams overhead. A former stable has been turned into a lavish dining space, while the wine cellar has been kept and filled with local bottles.

The very same climate that makes Sicily so propitious for wine production is a pretty sizable reason why people jet over to the island for a sojourn and there are plenty of ways to bask in the sunshine here. The large swimming pool and adjoining Jacuzzi are sure to see plenty of use, as are the barbecue and alfresco tables on the verandahs that are treated to peaceful views of the local landscape.

Although there's a welcome sense of isolation at the address, the nearest town – Frigintini – is only 3km away and has a few restaurants and shops to tide you over. A little further afield, there are beaches on the island's southern coastline starting from as close as 30km away – well within range for a day trip or two.

This architect-renovated home in the centre of Modica is a real find. Sitting behind gates, we were intrigued to see what lay behind. The house is constructed of warm local stone, which contrasts beautifully with the grey paintwork. There are multiple terraces, balconies and courtyards to enjoy – our favourite is the terrace with a lemon tree as its focal point – it's the perfect spot for an alfresco supper. Some of the rooms offer beautiful views of Modica, and there's an exercise room if you fancy clocking up some miles on the treadmill.

Or you could take a stroll around this stunning city with its Baroque buildings, like the Cathedral of St. George. There are restaurants and shops on your doorstep, or if you fancy a day at the beach, the golden sands of the Marina di Modica beach are 15 kilometres away.

After a day of exploring, fire up the barbecue and whip up some cocktails as you watch the sunset from your balcony.

When you've had enough of topping up your tan for the day, why not drive the 16km to the historic city of Syracuse, known for its ancient ruins and the lovely island of Ortigia. In addition to the history, you'll uncover a spectacular selection of lively bars, traditional restaurants and plenty of shops to pick up a holiday memento or two.

An hour or so south, the charming Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa make for fascinating day trips. In addition, we'd recommend stepping back in time on a visit to the former fishing village of Marzamemi on Sicily's southern tip.
