We love the open-plan living area, a free-flowing space primed for relaxation with ample seating, a delightfully-equipped country kitchen and a majestic stone fireplace. Down the hall, three sumptuous sleeping quarters promise restful slumbers and, through timber-framed windows, postcard-worthy views of your glorious surroundings.

This Tuscan villa is grand Italian rusticana at its finest. Though the wooden ceilings, thick stone walls and view of vineyards for miles feels like an 18th-century farmhouse, the glowing candelabra, rich oil paintings and antique furniture are more manor house-esque. The grounds are dotted with myriad places to recline and eat (both at the same time if you fancy), with a wooden dining table in the shade, or a wrought iron bistro set in the sun, and day beds and loungers lining the swimming pool. Staying at this sprawling Tuscan estate is like having your own ancient borgo (small village). Hectares of grounds are dotted with cypress trees, dense woodland, ancient olive groves and gardens blossoming with flowers. You could get your daily steps in just wandering the grounds. The villa itself is set around a traditional courtyard-style with a separate annexe housing some of the bedrooms. It’s a vision of Tuscan tradition – wooden ceilings, tiled floors and antique furniture in every room. The huge dining table can fit the whole group for breakfasts and the chrome, the professional kitchen could rival that of a Michelin-starred restaurant. Bedrooms are all ensuite, and have the touches of Victoriana and 19th-century splendour, like winged armchairs, dark wood desks and wrought-iron bed frames.

You’re out in splendid isolation here, with nothing but the sound of birds in the trees and the clink of glasses on the terrace. However, if you do fancy a day trip, Monteriggioni is just two kilometres away – a beautiful fortified village sitting atop a hill with a handful of traditional restaurants. 

The Sweetest Life

This charming apartment is in the old town of Colle di Val d'Elsa, a typically medieval region of Tuscany famous for crystal glass production. It’s a ten-minute stroll into the centre where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and archaeological museums beyond the ancient town walls. Further afield, the city of Siena is a half-hour drive away, ideal for a day trip.

The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello. Wood beams on display hark back to the building’s roots, but the decor is decidedly modern. Vibrant modern art is displayed above the plush, L-shaped sofa and the kitchen is a sleek space of white cabinets. The best bit is the view from French-style windows, which shows off golden fields and hills, even though you’re a short walk from the town centre.

In years gone by, this building in the countryside surrounding Siena was a farmhouse. Today, however, those paying a visit to the address will find a really rather dreamy Tuscan getaway.

We're willing to wager the first things that guests notice upon arrival is the invitingly blue swimming pool that sits in the middle of the garden, which in turn, is surrounded by beautiful views of Val d'Orcia — a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no less. The panorama is no less spectacular from underneath the home's shady verandah, either.

Inside, there are traditional aspects, like the wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiling underfoot, but the white walls and furnishings add a contemporary flourish, too. It must be said that the kitchen is modest in size, but there's also a barbecue in case you fancy cooking alfresco.

There is a recently added sauna, minipool and chromotherapy hot tub for those looking to fully relax. 

If you're hoping to dine out, there are a handful of restaurants in the closest town of Monteroni d'Arbia ten minutes' drive away, as well as a much wider choice in the medieval city of Siena, which takes about half an hour to reach in the car. You're well covered for countryside walks in the surrounding hills that will help you work up an appetite, too.
