Think tea parties in the living room, extravagant feasts around the dining table and luxurious breakfasts in the white, typically Italian kitchen. Jewel-coloured accents add to the bedrooms’ sumptuous decor, where plump throw pillows, elaborate headboards and classical art create serene and sophisticated spaces you’ll relish retreating to after a day of sightseeing and cycling around Lucca on the home’s fleet of bicycles. But the jewel in the crown of this royally decadent home is the private rooftop terrace. With sweeping panoramic views over the whole city, this is the perfect spot for cocktails or memorable starlit dinners catered by a private chef.

Located in the hills and a short drive from ancient villages, the Church of Pieve Santo Stefano and 4km from the historic city of Lucca lies this rustic villa. It’s charming, though a little dated in parts, and makes for a peaceful countryside stay. The outside space is definitely a highlight, with an outdoor lounge and an alfresco dining area – why not have your host arrange a private chef to top it off? Or, explore the surrounding area with a wine tasting.

It’s twilight, the sky is painted deep blue with streaks of purple, and you’re looking out over rustic rooftops as a gentle breeze carries murmurs of arias from the nearby music conservatory – your Tuscan fantasy is just beginning. Take in the lovely vistas of the Guinigi Tower and Lucca Cathedral with a drink. Your expansive terrace and the apartment to which it’s attached are situated on the top floor of a building dating back to the 1400s. The meeting of worlds old and new continues inside with tasteful furnishings and little dashes of luxury – think mirrored cabinets, cut crystalware and feather-trimmed cushions. When you aren’t taking holiday snaps from the terrace, we recommend a stroll around Lucca (or take the two bicycles provided for a ride). In addition to the conservatory, the home is right by Piazza del Suffragio and the must-see medieval church, Santa Giulia (all under a minute on foot), while several fantastic restaurants are on your doorstep. If you want to explore Guinigi Tower and Lucca Cathedral up close, both are a two-minute walk away.

Finding an exquisite palazzo in the heart of Lucca’s walled city is special. To bag a place with a garden and terrace to boot? Now that's a rare thing. Inside, the design-savvy interiors are impressive, and there’s heaps of space to spill out across the three bedrooms, each offering a private bathroom. It’s worth noting this home does not accept children under eight years old – so you’ll need to leave little ones at home for this Tuscan adventure. Location-wise, all the iconic landmarks are just a stroll away. The only thing this home is missing is private parking (not uncommon in Lucca). But with street parking close by, we can let that slide.

Just north of the walled perimeter of the medieval city, this home offers a spacious and elegant abode where you can walk to the River Serchio in seven minutes, or to the Porta Santa Maria in eight. Original beamed ceilings, charming wooden shutters, and traditional Italian furnishings await you in this Tuscan treat. The enchanting interiors echo classical aspects of the city, with antique wooden furniture, luxe textiles, and a marble fireplace at its heart. But modern pieces like the glass coffee table create a subtle contrast, reminding you of Lucca’s presence over so many centuries. On sunny afternoons, cold negronis on the large private terrace are a must. And by evening, host an intimate dinner around the dining table before a peaceful sleep under the plush, quilted blanket in the king-size bed. In this serene neighbourhood, we recommend waking up early to make use of the host’s bicycles. Take a romantic ride along the river then head into town – it’s a six-minute cycle to the Mercato del Carmine. Pick up some local delicacies to savour at sunset on the terrace.

About a thirty-second stroll from the entrance of this 14th-century tower, the setting couldn't be more fairytale-like if it tried. At the top of a medieval building, set over two floors, this modern home retains many of its original features in a serene and stylish space. We love its carefully curated mix of both new and antique pieces, along with a chandelier adding drama in the living room. White is the colour of choice, creating a bright and clean look which contrasts beautifully against the rich wooden floors. Up in the eaves of the home, you’ll find attic bedrooms tucked under beams dating back hundreds of years. Gaze out to rooftop views from almost every window – it’s hard to believe how close you are to the city's iconic tower, as well as its charming bars and restaurants. After visiting nearby churches and museums, don't miss out on the top shopping spots either – it’s a ten-minute walk to Via San Paolino for fashion, and six to Piazza San Giusto for antiques.

The apartment is just a two-minute walk from shops and some of the best restaurants in town. As with much of Italy, you’re never far from your next great meal here. The apartment is within the walls of Lucca, and all of the top sights are an easy walk away.

This dream-like state will continue when you head inside – white interiors and high ceilings, artwork, sculptures and cascading folds of fabric hanging above the beds create a sumptuous, sophisticated and romantic atmosphere.

It may be hard to leave this home, but thankfully it's also in a great location with plenty to explore close by. You're just a five-minute walk away from the Lucca city walls and the Guinigi Tower, while the Puccini Museum is a mere three-minute stroll.
