Bold, bright and modern with a knock-out location, this aparment is close to some of Pisa's best bits. The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, for one, is only a few minutes away on foot. And so is Mura di Pisa and Lion's Gate. After a long day of sightseeing, the living space is ideal for relaxing. It's worth noting the sofa also doubles as a bed for two guests, but with a door present, you'll find an element of privacy. Apart from a great central spot, we also like the outdoor seating where you can take a moment to yourself every now and again.

This heavenly home couldn’t ask for a more idyllic location. It’s set into the rolling hills that define the border between Lucca and Pisa – two must-see cities – where ancient villages, petite castles and historic churches and palaces sit amid impossibly green vegetation. Surrounded by scenic woodland, you’ll find your only neighbours to be friendly foxes, boar, weasels and curious badgers. Built in the 1700s, this large, green-shuttered farmhouse sports a modern renovation that maintains the integrity of the past through its stone facade and flooring, charmingly crooked ceiling beams and a quaint, tiled kitchen perfect for rustling up hearty sharing plates of antipasto. Outside, sprawling lawns create a sense that the entire hillside is your playground, and you’ll find many seating and lounging areas to unwind in when you’re not splashing around in the turquoise pool. But we’ve saved our favourite feature for last: the tiled terrace, with its sloped beam roof supported by sturdy stone columns is utterly paradisiacal. Here, dine lavishly under a chandelier, surrounded by tropical plants and tumbling vines that create a pretty border for your uninterrupted mountain views.

Inside, it’s a homespun delight with antique furnishings that have been in your host’s family for centuries. We had a particular soft spot for the bedrooms – we loved the nature theme in combination with the original ceiling beams to create a fresh but warm atmosphere. The Walled City of Lucca is an eighteen-minute drive from your abode. Spend sunny afternoons exploring the Renaissance ramparts and the Cattedrale di San Martino. When lovingly restoring this historic Tuscan farmhouse, the hosts chose to keep certain period features, such as the brickwork and wooden beams. However, they also oversaw some pretty impressive additions.

Obviously, we have to start with the outdoor swimming pool made from local stone, which sits in the middle of the expansive grounds. A solarium complete with loungers and umbrellas can be found conveniently alongside. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a gazebo just outside the back door where you can enjoy alfresco feasts that stretch long into the evening. Inside the home, you'll find walls painted in pleasing pastels, a modern kitchen dominated by clean lines and some eye-catching feature lighting.

Surrounding the address, there's a stream and woodland for tranquil strolls, as well as plenty of nature reserves nearby. You'll also find a wealth of attractions in the towns of Lucca and Pisa, both reached in just over twenty minutes by car.

We recommend hiring a car here as there's plenty to do and see within a short drive. No matter where you choose to go, you'll find vibrant Italian culture to soak up (and so much good food). Found in an ancient hamlet in Lucca, this Italian cottage charms with stone walls and exposed beams.  Because of its age, the interior is that of a more traditional home, which might not be to everyone's taste. Still, it's comfortable and family-friendly.  It's worth noting the sloped ceilings could be hazardous to taller guests, and there's no air conditioning in the third bedroom. With ample outdoor seating, you can take in the greenery on the horizon with a glass of wine. The swimming pool above ground also gives you a unique view of the village. For day trips, venture to Pisa or Lucca – both reachable by car.

There's plenty of character to be found inside, thanks to the gilded mirrors, arched entrances and open fireplace. The farmhouse kitchen, with its curved brick ceiling, is a cosy spot to cook up some delicious homemade dishes to serve up in the impressive dining space. Or, you might prefer to head outside and make some pizza using the wood-fired oven – the dining pergola is the perfect place to eat as you admire the view. When the temperature rises, it's time to make a splash in the swimming pool, while the hot tub is ideal for a luxurious soak after dark. 

If you don't want to leave this little patch of heaven, then we don't blame you, but if some adventure is on the cards then there's plenty to do and see nearby. In the undulating Tuscan hills, just outside Lucca (a nine-minute drive away), this classic Italian villa is dripping with romance. As you dine on the terrace, beneath the ancient-feeling stone pergola, sunsets set the horizon on fire and tinge the hills beyond the olive groves a dreamy purple. Grapevines twist overhead, creeping in from the vineyard’s fields next door. Apart from this romantic dinner spot, you’ve also got secret outdoor lounge areas, a barbecue station, deckchairs on the lawn and flower beds bursting with colourful hydrangea. 

Outside, the villa is a vision of Tuscan tradition, with green-shuttered windows and a terracotta roof. And the interior doesn’t disappoint either. The kitchen feels like stepping back into the 16th century, with copper pots and pans hanging from the walls and a granite-topped dining table in the centre that looks like it’s seen many hands rolling and shaping pasta over the centuries. The cauldron-pot in the old hearth is a nice touch – but don’t worry, there’s an electric oven and stove for 21st-century cooking too. 

There’s a grand lounge, lit by a sparkling chandelier, for classy evenings in and a second sitting room in splendid Victorian-style floral wallpaper. Throwing open the French doors in here, you can breathe in the fresh air and admire the Tuscan hills before you. Bedrooms are beautiful spaces – particularly the four-poster room with the upright piano which feels like it’s fit for Italian nobility.

Located in the countryside between the Pisa coast and Lucca city centre, this estate pops with bucolic charm. Though renovated, there are hints of this home’s history – think traditional features, original beamed ceilings and antique-inspired furnishings. It may not be to the taste of those looking for a contemporary pad, but we love how the designs work seamlessly against this rural setting. There’s plenty of space to unwind, with a large living room, conservatory, outdoor lounge and private pool – we suggest sharing a bottle of Sangiovese overlooking the lilies in the pond. We’re sure you’ll love the location here. It’s situated between the vibrant Piazza San Michele and the Via Fillungo, so you’ll have plenty of boutiques and restaurants on your doorstep.

This villa was once home to the owner's grandmother, and it retains all the cosy charm and elegance that you would expect. It's nestled in the village of Sant’Alessio, in a quiet spot where you can really settle into the Tuscan way of life. The interior is bursting with traditional details, from the chandelier to the stunning staircase, and of course there are some iconic terracotta floortiles. Budding chefs will love trying out classic Italian recipes – just like nonna used to make – in the beautiful kitchen, before serving up their creations outside on the terrace. It's the ideal spot for long, relaxed dinners, perhaps with a bottle or two of prosecco to make the evening extra special. The surrounding village has a couple of local restaurants and cafés within walking distance, and it's a perfectly peaceful area where you can truly relax. Plus, the beautiful Renaissance city of Lucca is just 3kms away – pick up a tub of gelato and spend a day strolling through the cobbled streets.

Inside a historic building in the charming city of Lucca, this apartment is the ideal place for your Italian escape. The first thing you'll notice are the elaborate ceilings, which are over 300 years old, providing an elegant, historic backdrop to your Tuscan stay. This farmhouse villa is an ideal base for exploring some gorgeous Tuscan cities and towns. Made up of a main house and a hayloft with its own living room and kitchen, there's plenty of space for a family or group of friends to stretch out. We think a couple of areas could do with a touch-up, especially in the hayloft, but the views over the Compitese hills from the private pool are lovely. You'll want a car for exploring, and there's no shortage of hot spots like Lucca, Pisa, and Florence nearby.

If you’re feeling short on creative energy, let this unique home be your muse. Surrounded by Lucca’s Renaissance history, you’ll be steps away from the spectacular old palace that now houses the Town Hall and a short walk from the columnar San Michele in Foro church that predates medieval times. Inside the apartment, Tuscan aesthetics dominate, with a palette of earthy colours accented by rusty reds – we especially love the dappled paint effect on the walls and the vibrant tiled bathrooms. An L-shaped kitchen with generous counter space – topped with marble to continue the air of casual luxury – and a dedicated dining room, indicate that this is a home where culinary exploits are highly encouraged. Sitting pretty on a sweeping lawn outside the ancient city of Lucca, this historic villa embraces its roots. Between frescoed walls and antique furniture, the home's traditional style might not be for everyone. Still, it's bright and comfortable, with plenty of space for large groups. The Enchanted Grove

Located in the countryside just outside of Lucca, guests staying at this Tuscan villa are treated to views of the old town, rolling fields and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. As you can imagine, it's a truly idyllic location and what's perhaps most impressive is that the home is just as easy on the eye, too.

The main portion of the home sits within a villa that dates back to the 15th century and you get a sense of this history with the high ceilings, large fireplaces and wooden beams. There's also a real sense of grandeur when it comes to the interior design — you only have to look at the chandeliers, artworks and lavish dining areas to see what we mean. This opulence can be witnessed in the pool house and suite house, as well.

Stepping outside, there are plenty of terraces, verandahs and lounges out on the lawns populated by olive trees and flowers where you can sit and admire the scenery. That being said, the views are equally as dreamy from the home's swimming pool, too.

When you can prise yourself away from this tranquil address, you can hop in the car and be wandering the historic streets of Lucca in a little over ten minutes, while the Italian coastline takes around thirty-five minutes to reach.
