Bold, bright and modern with a knock-out location, this aparment is close to some of Pisa's best bits. The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, for one, is only a few minutes away on foot. And so is Mura di Pisa and Lion's Gate. After a long day of sightseeing, the living space is ideal for relaxing. It's worth noting the sofa also doubles as a bed for two guests, but with a door present, you'll find an element of privacy. Apart from a great central spot, we also like the outdoor seating where you can take a moment to yourself every now and again.

This fairy tale cottage offers front row seats to a freshwater stream that runs directly from the Monte Pisano mountains. Inside, it’s a homespun delight with antique furnishings that have been in your host’s family for centuries. You’ll split your time between the cosy living space, reclining on the sofa with a glass of robust red, and the enchanting garden – plate up Tuscan favourites at the dining table or sip a coffee beside the trickling brook. We had a particular soft spot for the bedrooms – we loved the nature theme in combination with the original ceiling beams to create a fresh but warm atmosphere. The Walled City of Lucca is an eighteen-minute drive from your abode. Spend sunny afternoons exploring the Renaissance ramparts and the Cattedrale di San Martino. Or why not add leaning towers to your itinerary? Pisa is only a twenty-five-minute drive away.

Dating back to the 1600s, this hunting lodge in the Lucca countryside features inspiring views, original frescoes and plenty of modern conveniences. Three living areas provide enough room for the whole group to spread out and two ground-floor bedrooms mean those who struggle with stairs don’t have to miss out. Outside, it’s just as impressive. A brook flows through the garden and the swimming pool is sure to be a hit. Although there are plenty of dining spaces here, if you fancy eating out, the restaurants of Lucca and Pisa are less than a thirty-minute drive away.

This heavenly home couldn’t ask for a more idyllic location. It’s set into the rolling hills that define the border between Lucca and Pisa – two must-see cities – where ancient villages, petite castles and historic churches and palaces sit amid impossibly green vegetation. Surrounded by scenic woodland, you’ll find your only neighbours to be friendly foxes, boar, weasels and curious badgers. Built in the 1700s, this large, green-shuttered farmhouse sports a modern renovation that maintains the integrity of the past through its stone facade and flooring, charmingly crooked ceiling beams and a quaint, tiled kitchen perfect for rustling up hearty sharing plates of antipasto. Outside, sprawling lawns create a sense that the entire hillside is your playground, and you’ll find many seating and lounging areas to unwind in when you’re not splashing around in the turquoise pool. But we’ve saved our favourite feature for last: the tiled terrace, with its sloped beam roof supported by sturdy stone columns is utterly paradisiacal. Here, dine lavishly under a chandelier, surrounded by tropical plants and tumbling vines that create a pretty border for your uninterrupted mountain views.

When lovingly restoring this historic Tuscan farmhouse, the hosts chose to keep certain period features, such as the brickwork and wooden beams. However, they also oversaw some pretty impressive additions.

Obviously, we have to start with the outdoor swimming pool made from local stone, which sits in the middle of the expansive grounds. A solarium complete with loungers and umbrellas can be found conveniently alongside. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a gazebo just outside the back door where you can enjoy alfresco feasts that stretch long into the evening. Inside the home, you'll find walls painted in pleasing pastels, a modern kitchen dominated by clean lines and some eye-catching feature lighting.

Surrounding the address, there's a stream and woodland for tranquil strolls, as well as plenty of nature reserves nearby. You'll also find a wealth of attractions in the towns of Lucca and Pisa, both reached in just over twenty minutes by car.

There's plenty of character to be found inside, thanks to the gilded mirrors, arched entrances and open fireplace. The farmhouse kitchen, with its curved brick ceiling, is a cosy spot to cook up some delicious homemade dishes to serve up in the impressive dining space. Or, you might prefer to head outside and make some pizza using the wood-fired oven – the dining pergola is the perfect place to eat as you admire the view. When the temperature rises, it's time to make a splash in the swimming pool, while the hot tub is ideal for a luxurious soak after dark. 

If you don't want to leave this little patch of heaven, then we don't blame you, but if some adventure is on the cards then there's plenty to do and see nearby. Nature lovers can join one of the rural trails and hike, cycle, or even horse-ride through the countryside. The beaches of the Versilia Coast are just half an hour's drive away, while the historic cities of Lucca and Pisa are ten and 26kms away respectively.

Perched high above the beautiful medieval city of Lucca – just over two-miles drive away – this 17th century villa offers a plethora of charming dining areas and quaint living spaces. The interior benefits from eloquent floral furnishings, high vaulted ceilings with old renaissance arches and opulent touches. Lined by cypress trees, the pristine swimming pool really catches the eye, and a veranda covered patio area overlooking picturesque views of the Tuscan hills is truly special. Our favourite spot is hidden in a quiet little pocket around the back of the villa, where a charming woodland dining area can be found – with draping leafy oaks, glowing candle lanterns, and seating for the whole party. Another dining spot can be found steps away – sun-dappled in the early mornings, this is a perfect place for al fresco breakfasts. When you’re not hosting tea parties or sipping on something a little more bubbly, venture to the sweeping hills for seriously scenic hiking trails – that will have you grinning like a Cheshire Cat.

Found in an ancient hamlet in Lucca, this Italian cottage charms with stone walls and exposed beams.  Because of its age, the interior is that of a more traditional home, which might not be to everyone's taste. Still, it's comfortable and family-friendly.  It's worth noting the sloped ceilings could be hazardous to taller guests, and there's no air conditioning in the third bedroom. With ample outdoor seating, you can take in the greenery on the horizon with a glass of wine. The swimming pool above ground also gives you a unique view of the village. For day trips, venture to Pisa or Lucca – both reachable by car.

This sweet stone farmhouse just a 10-minute drive from Lucca is a glorious spot for two couples or a small family to live the Tuscan dream. Through the antique gate in a low stone wall, this hillside home has a private swimming pool surrounded by lovely mature gardens. Rich, green trees shield the expansive garden from view and there’s plenty of space for outdoor lounging. Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones. But a quirky suspended staircase and macrame chandelier in the lounge add a little surprise. Bedrooms in pastel pink and dove grey feel fairytale fine beneath the old wooden ceiling of the home. Just a short walk away you’ll find a little market store and a local bar, and a bit further into the village is a pizzeria and bar to enjoy.

We recommend hiring a car here as there's plenty to do and see within a short drive. The historic town of Lucca with its colourful buildings and ancient monuments is only twenty-six-minutes away, and the lovable Pisa with its must-see leaning tower is a thirty-eight-minute drive. No matter where you choose to go, you'll find vibrant Italian culture to soak up (and so much good food). Located in the countryside between the Pisa coast and Lucca city centre, this estate pops with bucolic charm. Though renovated, there are hints of this home’s history – think traditional features, original beamed ceilings and antique-inspired furnishings. It may not be to the taste of those looking for a contemporary pad, but we love how the designs work seamlessly against this rural setting. There’s plenty of space to unwind, with a large living room, conservatory, outdoor lounge and private pool – we suggest sharing a bottle of Sangiovese overlooking the lilies in the pond. When you’re ready to venture out, you’ll find Viareggio Beach, San Rossore Park, and Pisa city centre within easy driving distance.

You'll find plenty of places to take advantage of the Tuscan sun at this romantic villa, set only a few minutes from historic Lucca. Of course, the private swimming pool is the biggest draw – make a splash in the crystal-clear water first-thing each morning, then paddle over to the Jacuzzi corner and relax in the bubbles with a cocktail in hand. Later on, lounge on either of the two balconies with a glass of local wine, then dig into an Italian feast on the patio as the stars come out.

It’s adjacent to the bus station, so it’s easy to head out on day trips – if you can tear yourself away from beautiful Lucca. The apartment features large windows that look out over the streets of Lucca and fill the home with light. You’ll have everything you need for a comfortable stay here, including two bathrooms.

There’s a private walled garden with a lawn and a sparkling swimming pool fringed by sun loungers or dine outside under the shade of the loggia after cooking an Italian feast on the wood-burning barbecue. Or enjoy a meal in the eat-in kitchen (there’s no formal dining room here, so you may need to tidy up after cooking, or let your host arrange a private chef). When you feel like exploring, there’s plenty to do. This place is situated just 400 metres from the main square in Calci, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt village. Here you’ll find restaurants and a natural history museum, while Pisa and Lucca are 12 and 22 kilometres respectively.

With a great address in the heart of Lucca with its well-preserved Renaissance walls, this studio-style apartment is an ideal city retreat for two. Step out onto cobblestone streets, and you'll find an array of restaurants within a short stroll. Or music lovers can visit Casa di Puccini, where the famous opera composer was born. With such a fantastic location, you may hear some street noise during your stay. Unlike many studios, this apartment has a separate kitchen – though there's no oven, there's a hob and microwave. There are plenty of character features here, and the tall ceilings give a sense of space. We love the modern four-poster bed, too – this place is ideal for a romantic break.

Located in the secluded countryside, halfway between Lucca and the beaches of Versili, this renovated Tuscan farmhouse is the ultimate Italian retreat. Situated on a hilltop, views are in abundance. The decor is rustic and charming, and there’s plenty of indoor and outdoor communal space for entertaining. The private pool is perfect for those hot balmy days, and the balcony is a nice touch too. We’re particularly fond of the covered outdoor dining area – ideal for long dinners late into the night. If you’re looking to explore further afield, the medieval town of Lucca is a short drive away.

Perfect for a couple’s retreat, this charming penthouse apartment places you in the heart of the city. With far-reaching views across Lucca to the Tuscan hills beyond, it’s easy to see why this home caught our eye. We love the glazed terrace and the wooden beams, adding character to the space – just mind your head on those sloping ceilings. Locally, you’re a mere stone’s throw away from delicious Italian eateries – so while there’s a kitchen fit for any budding chef here, dining out is sure to be on the menu. 

Lucca Skies

Boasting stunning views of the town's historic rooftops and medieval towers, this two-level apartment is the ideal Lucca retreat. It’s light and airy with lots of character features, but we should probably mention that the bathroom is a bit dated. And although there’s a lift here there’s still a flight of stairs to climb. We’re sure you’ll love the location here. It’s situated between the vibrant Piazza San Michele and the Via Fillungo, so you’ll have plenty of boutiques and restaurants on your doorstep.

Rooftop Views

Peek through the windows of this first-floor apartment and you’re met with views aplenty – mediaeval city walls, the promenade, an antique baroque church and Porta San Pietro. Aside from the picture-perfect vistas, with Piazza Napoleone, Teatro del Giglio, and the Cathedral of San Martino close by, you’ll never be short of things to see and do. Lucky, really, as not all curtains completely block out the light, so after waking as sunshine filters through the window, you’ll be up and ready to tour the city.

This Lucca home has been picked straight from the pages of an Italian fairytale. Set within the 16th-century Palazzo Cittadella, this characterful apartment marries history, local heritage and contemporary luxuries – think antique paintings, timber-beam ceilings, ornate chandeliers and tiled floors, with a Jacuzzi bath to boot. The living and dining spaces are the epitome of tasteful grandeur, but we think that you'll spend most of your time exploring the picture-perfect scene on your doorstep: the Piazza Cittadella, lined with cafes and colourful umbrellas.
