Bold, bright and modern with a knock-out location, this aparment is close to some of Pisa's best bits. The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, for one, is only a few minutes away on foot. And so is Mura di Pisa and Lion's Gate. After a long day of sightseeing, the living space is ideal for relaxing. It's worth noting the sofa also doubles as a bed for two guests, but with a door present, you'll find an element of privacy. Apart from a great central spot, we also like the outdoor seating where you can take a moment to yourself every now and again.

Inside, it’s a homespun delight with antique furnishings that have been in your host’s family for centuries. We had a particular soft spot for the bedrooms – we loved the nature theme in combination with the original ceiling beams to create a fresh but warm atmosphere. The Walled City of Lucca is an eighteen-minute drive from your abode. Spend sunny afternoons exploring the Renaissance ramparts and the Cattedrale di San Martino. This heavenly home couldn’t ask for a more idyllic location. It’s set into the rolling hills that define the border between Lucca and Pisa – two must-see cities – where ancient villages, petite castles and historic churches and palaces sit amid impossibly green vegetation. Surrounded by scenic woodland, you’ll find your only neighbours to be friendly foxes, boar, weasels and curious badgers. Built in the 1700s, this large, green-shuttered farmhouse sports a modern renovation that maintains the integrity of the past through its stone facade and flooring, charmingly crooked ceiling beams and a quaint, tiled kitchen perfect for rustling up hearty sharing plates of antipasto. Outside, sprawling lawns create a sense that the entire hillside is your playground, and you’ll find many seating and lounging areas to unwind in when you’re not splashing around in the turquoise pool. But we’ve saved our favourite feature for last: the tiled terrace, with its sloped beam roof supported by sturdy stone columns is utterly paradisiacal. Here, dine lavishly under a chandelier, surrounded by tropical plants and tumbling vines that create a pretty border for your uninterrupted mountain views.

Because of its age, the interior is that of a more traditional home, which might not be to everyone's taste. Still, it's comfortable and family-friendly.  It's worth noting the sloped ceilings could be hazardous to taller guests, and there's no air conditioning in the third bedroom. With ample outdoor seating, you can take in the greenery on the horizon with a glass of wine. The swimming pool above ground also gives you a unique view of the village. It’s just outside the medieval city of Lucca and a five-minute drive sees you in the historic old town where ancient towers and cobbled streets await. Apart from a few fellow villas dotting the countryside, the view here is of Tuscany’s forest-clad hills and a fringe of ancient oaks and cypresses hides the sprawling private grounds from view. Breathe in the scent of Mediterranean herbs from the patio where a long table allows big group dinners – particularly spectacular when the sunset bathes the surrounding hills in golden light. When lovingly restoring this historic Tuscan farmhouse, the hosts chose to keep certain period features, such as the brickwork and wooden beams. However, they also oversaw some pretty impressive additions.

Obviously, we have to start with the outdoor swimming pool made from local stone, which sits in the middle of the expansive grounds. A solarium complete with loungers and umbrellas can be found conveniently alongside. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a gazebo just outside the back door where you can enjoy alfresco feasts that stretch long into the evening. Inside the home, you'll find walls painted in pleasing pastels, a modern kitchen dominated by clean lines and some eye-catching feature lighting.

Surrounding the address, there's a stream and woodland for tranquil strolls, as well as plenty of nature reserves nearby. You'll also find a wealth of attractions in the towns of Lucca and Pisa, both reached in just over twenty minutes by car.

Escape the stresses of daily life with this home in a lovely setting. There’s a private walled garden with a lawn and a sparkling swimming pool fringed by sun loungers or dine outside under the shade of the loggia after cooking an Italian feast on the wood-burning barbecue. Or enjoy a meal in the eat-in kitchen (there’s no formal dining room here, so you may need to tidy up after cooking, or let your host arrange a private chef). When you feel like exploring, there’s plenty to do. This place is situated just 400 metres from the main square in Calci, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt village. Countless stories have played out in the wooden-beamed bedrooms, with their plush, velvet head-boarded beds, ornate antique furniture and pretty French doors – move fast to nab the en-suite rooms which have deep claw-footed tubs or jacuzzi baths. What's really worth writing home about is the social space; from garden pergolas to grand dining rooms, this home will be recounted in tales for years to come.

Once an oil mill, now a comfortable home-from-home, this 16th century villa is ideal for those who want to enjoy a relaxing break in the Tuscan countryside. Surrounded by olive groves with views of the Vorno valley, the outside area is the perfect place to unwind. There’s a swimming pool open from May and a dining terrace for feasting on meals cooked by the personal chef. The interiors are a little dated, but we think that’s part of the charm. Location-wise, Lucca is a short drive away, and Pisa is reached in less than thirty minutes.

Or, you might prefer to head outside and make some pizza using the wood-fired oven – the dining pergola is the perfect place to eat as you admire the view. When the temperature rises, it's time to make a splash in the swimming pool, while the hot tub is ideal for a luxurious soak after dark. 

If you don't want to leave this little patch of heaven, then we don't blame you, but if some adventure is on the cards then there's plenty to do and see nearby. Nature lovers can join one of the rural trails and hike, cycle, or even horse-ride through the countryside. The beaches of the Versilia Coast are just half an hour's drive away, while the historic cities of Lucca and Pisa are ten and 26kms away respectively.

Located in the secluded countryside, halfway between Lucca and the beaches of Versili, this renovated Tuscan farmhouse is the ultimate Italian retreat. Situated on a hilltop, views are in abundance. The decor is rustic and charming, and there’s plenty of indoor and outdoor communal space for entertaining. The private pool is perfect for those hot balmy days, and the balcony is a nice touch too. We’re particularly fond of the covered outdoor dining area – ideal for long dinners late into the night. If you’re looking to explore further afield, the medieval town of Lucca is a short drive away.

Housed in a farmhouse villa that dates back to the 15th century, there’s an air of seductive, Casanova–like charm that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Stone walls and floors, beamed ceilings, candelabras, elegant drapes and dark furniture create a warm, intimate atmosphere with additional decorative delights hidden behind elaborate iron gates. To add to the romance, there’s an indoor hot tub, complete with a candle chandelier. This sweet stone farmhouse just a 10-minute drive from Lucca is a glorious spot for two couples or a small family to live the Tuscan dream. Through the antique gate in a low stone wall, this hillside home has a private swimming pool surrounded by lovely mature gardens. Rich, green trees shield the expansive garden from view and there’s plenty of space for outdoor lounging. Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones. But a quirky suspended staircase and macrame chandelier in the lounge add a little surprise. Bedrooms in pastel pink and dove grey feel fairytale fine beneath the old wooden ceiling of the home. Just a short walk away you’ll find a little market store and a local bar, and a bit further into the village is a pizzeria and bar to enjoy.

There's more than a touch of opulence to be found inside this apartment in the centre of Lucca. Traditional artworks and gilded mirror frames line the wall, ornate chandeliers hang from the ceiling and grand beds await for you to sprawl out on at the end of the day.

The home's secret weapon, however, has to be the gorgeous view of the bustling Piazza Anfiteatro and a Byzantine mosaic on the façade of the Church of San Frediano out through the windows in two of the bedrooms or the dining room. If you want to feel the breeze upon your face as you people-watch, there's also a Juliet balcony.

As you'll be able to see, there's a great range of cafes and markets in the medieval square directly outside, but there are plenty more attractions that sit within walking distance, too. If you're looking for an authentically beautiful Tuscan getaway, this 18th-century villa is the key. There’s room for all twelve of you to pile into this colossal three-storey villa fringing the Tuscan town of Lucca. Built in 1650, the more-is-more opulence of the interiors may be a little fussy. But you can’t help but swoon at the vast living spaces, including a library and study for work, and the generously proportioned bedrooms, each with a bathroom. Lounging about the private pool surrounded by ancient oak, olive, and lime trees, it all feels blissfully secluded. But when you’re ready to sample Tuscan life, the medieval town of Lucca is just an 8-kilometre drive away, and there’s a Nonna-style pizzeria just footsteps from your door.

The Grapes of L’Appia

In the undulating Tuscan hills, just outside Lucca (a nine-minute drive away), this classic Italian villa is dripping with romance. As you dine on the terrace, beneath the ancient-feeling stone pergola, sunsets set the horizon on fire and tinge the hills beyond the olive groves a dreamy purple. Grapevines twist overhead, creeping in from the vineyard’s fields next door. Apart from this romantic dinner spot, you’ve also got secret outdoor lounge areas, a barbecue station, deckchairs on the lawn and flower beds bursting with colourful hydrangea. 

Outside, the villa is a vision of Tuscan tradition, with green-shuttered windows and a terracotta roof. And the interior doesn’t disappoint either. The kitchen feels like stepping back into the 16th century, with copper pots and pans hanging from the walls and a granite-topped dining table in the centre that looks like it’s seen many hands rolling and shaping pasta over the centuries. The cauldron-pot in the old hearth is a nice touch – but don’t worry, there’s an electric oven and stove for 21st-century cooking too. 

There’s a grand lounge, lit by a sparkling chandelier, for classy evenings in and a second sitting room in splendid Victorian-style floral wallpaper. Throwing open the French doors in here, you can breathe in the fresh air and admire the Tuscan hills before you. Bedrooms are beautiful spaces – particularly the four-poster room with the upright piano which feels like it’s fit for Italian nobility.
