A tree-lined driveway leads to the impressive, tangerine facade of this Italian villa. It’s in the countryside, just on the outskirts of the charming town of Pistoia. A ten-minute drive sees you in the town centre, where an ancient duomo and old family towers await to be explored. If you fancy a day trip, Lucca is just a forty-five-minute drive. Sunny days beg for a dip in the Roman-style swimming pool and there are plenty of shaded nooks and verandas to relax with a good book. Breakfast can be taken in the big, country-style kitchen which looks like a vision of yesteryear with its log-fired hearth still active and a dedicated pasta maker and charcuterie slicer. Dine outside (roof on or roof off, it’s up to you) or in the formal dining room inside at an antique table. In here you’ll also find a music corner for the maestro of the group – a vintage record player alongside an accordion and grand piano. This villa is where real Italian living is the name of the game.

Surrounded by holm oaks, cypresses and chestnut trees, this home near Pistoia is a peaceful retreat set within the stunning Tuscan countryside. It’s a sociable place to stay – whether you’re lazing by the pool, tucking into alfresco meals on the covered terrace, or sipping a bold chianti under the gazebo at sunset. Head into town to pick up some fresh local produce to cook on the stone barbecue, or make pizzas in the bell tower’s wood-fired oven. Inside, you’ll find wooden beams, exposed brick walls, stone staircases and typically Tuscan decor, so it’ll feel like another world when you step into the basement, with its Jacuzzi room painted with palm trees and a brilliant yellow sky.

A Tuscan villa dating back to the 19th century, there's plenty of history in this home – we were especially fond of the exposed brickwork and wooden beams, contributing to a romantic and authentic-feeling living area. Not to be outdone, the outdoor space is equally impressive – you'll find acres of olive trees surrounding the pool, enhancing the sense of privacy as you relax in the sun. Unfortunately, the pool is only available between June and September – if you're visiting outside these times, stay entertained by exploring the area on one of the mountain bikes, or book tours and cooking classes with your host.

Greeting you with wrought-iron gates, this eighteenth-century Tuscan villa immerses you in the past while maintaining one foot firmly in the present. Set in rolling countryside, just a short drive from the city of Pistoia, it's about as charming as it gets. Think staggering scenery, beautiful terraces, stone courtyards and terracotta tiles. The estate is private and pristine, with immaculate lawns, fragrant flowers and a backdrop of gently swaying pine trees. It's out here that we think you'll spend most of your time, by the glorious infinity pool with far-reaching views. Up at the house, you'll step into history, with so many character features it could be used as a setting for a film. There's a grand living space, with a magnificent fireplace and huge dining table, along with a rustic kitchen and a second lounge. But it's the bedrooms that we fell head over heels with – furnished with antiques and with beamed ceilings and shuttered windows, they're simply beautiful. The ground floor bedroom even opens to a covered veranda with a table and chairs, and the master bedroom's ensuite has a Turkish bath where you can enjoy some aromatherapy. Dining outside on the terrace is an all-day affair, with a barbecue for some of the fresh produce you can pick up locally. And in the evening, why not slip into the hot tub as the sun sets. And although it feels secluded, this place is just a forty-minute drive from Lucca and an hour from Florence.

When staying in the spa town of Montecatini Terme, it’s only right to have a spa of your own. This gorgeous villa, nestled between Florence and Lucca, has relaxation down to a tee. Want for nothing with expansive gardens, a private gym, a huge glistening pool, and a spa complete with a huge jacuzzi, sauna, and Turkish bath. 

It might have every luxury you could ask for, with a modern interior that practically sparkles, but the home is traditional and charming. Creamy walls, white shuttered windows, and a terracotta tiled roof, characteristic of a Tuscan abode, set the scene for a blissful stay. 

While the home itself is lovely, we can’t get over the panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. Atmospheric rolling hills and sprawling fields are everywhere you turn. It’s the perfect setting to unwind and relax by the pool. Better yet, take in the view from your jacuzzi. The spa might be for the grown-ups, but the kids will love the opportunities for games in the L-shaped pool.

If you thought the days were beautiful, dusk brings new meaning to the word. Watch the golden sun dip into the countryside from one of the patio seating areas, glass of local wine in hand. Then, gather beneath the woven pergola and get started with dinner on the stone brick barbecue. 

When it’s time to explore, the centre of Montecatini Terme is only moments away. Take the funicular train up the hill to the old town for a delicious dinner and even better views.

Anyone for tennis? Lovers of the game will be thrilled with the large courts here. Prepare some strawberries and cream for your own version of Wimbledon. The star attraction, though, is this grand, secluded home high on a hill with views over the verdant Tuscan valleys. Enjoy breakfast while gazing out over the peaceful hillside or lounge by the pool while taking in the glorious scent of the surrounding pines. Later, relax over a long lunch of antipasto under the shade of the gazebo with its billowing drapes. Then go for a walk on the winding terracotta paths to find your own slice of heaven in the magnificent gardens. 

Inside, the interiors are no less impressive. Select a book from the library and recline on the chaise longue or take afternoon tea in the sunroom overlooking the silvery olives. We could spend much of our time just wandering around this vast home, discovering all the intriguing antiques and objet d'art. There's so much to do here, but if you do want to venture out, you'll be spoilt for choice. 

Spend the day at the famous Montecatini Thermal Waters (thirty-three minutes by car) and perhaps try their mud bath therapies or visit the many museums in Pistoia, a twenty-minute drive away. If you find yourself in this historic city in July, check out the Pistoia Blues Festival.

Whereas most homes give you a single terrace if you're lucky, this Tuscan property spoils you with outdoor spaces. As well as a lounge given some shade by a large parasol, there's also a separate deck with an alfresco dining table and a stone barbecue, plus another area that holds a swimming pool.

Although we're betting you'll be spending most of your time in the open air, the interior is also pleasing to the eye as well. Through the arched doorways, guests will be greeted by a rustic interior, complete with cooling tiles on the floor, patterned walls in the kitchen and lots of botanical-themed artwork dotted about the place.

The local village of Vellano can be reached in around ten minutes' stroll and has a couple of restaurants for when you get peckish. Further afield, there are Tuscan towns that can be reached in under an hour's drive, such as Montecatini Terme, Lucca and Pistoia. If you're up for a slightly longer journey, Florence is only an hour and twenty minutes' drive from the home.

With the shops, cafes and eateries of Lamporecchio on your doorstep and picturesque Pistoia no more than a thirty-minute drive away, this apartment is perfectly placed for a laid-back family holiday. There’s a private balcony for enjoying a traditional Italian lunch in the sunshine and a small communal pool for hot summer days. Inside the home, the kitchen is fully equipped for rustling up something tasty, and the bedrooms have everything you need for a comfortable night’s sleep.

This rustic farmhouse surrounded by picturesque hills makes for a restful Tuscan retreat. The interiors are a little dated in parts, but perfectly comfortable for a rural stay – the dining room with panoramic windows is a highlight. Outside, the terrace offers swing seats, loungers and a dining area, so you can maximise every moment with those country views. The unpaved track to this house is a little tricky to navigate, so it’s not the best for low-suspension cars. Nearby you’ll find Pescia’s authentic restaurants and shops, while Lucca lies less than 25km away should you feel like a day in the city.

Slap bang in the beautiful Tuscan countryside, the abode is surrounded by mature trees, olive groves and rambling woodland trails that lead to a secret waterfall. Inside the main house, there’s a rustic yet refined approach. Expect exposed stone and timber beams with plenty of modern conveniences to ensure your stay as fuss-free as possible. Plus, there’s a private apartment with a bedroom, kitchen and en-suite bathroom – ideal for holidays with extended family or friends. There are village restaurants and shops a short drive away in the Montalbano hills and Florence is only 20 kilometres away, so you can get your culture fix in the morning and be back by the pool in time for an afternoon swim followed by a glass of something chilled on the expansive terrace.

The layout here won’t suit everyone – the home is spread over several floors and one of the staircases is open – and the traditional decor won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it’s a great option for those seeking a house with personality. Location-wise, you’re in the village of Massa e Cozzile, with Lucca, Pisa, and Versilia within driving distance for day trips.

Boasting noble origins and surrounded by 10 hectares of land, this villa guarantees a stay to remember. Inside, you'll find 19th-century antiques and ceiling frescoes – and while this may not appeal to the modernists among you, the place has that quintessential Tuscan charm that we can’t get enough of. Taking advantage of the glorious weather couldn’t be easier thanks to the alfresco dining terrace and seating area, and when you need to cool off, there’s a private pool. Location-wise, Montecatini Terme is within easy driving distance, but if you fancy exploring further afield, Pisa is our day-trip destination of choice.

If you’re looking for local immersion in a quintessentially Tuscan home, you've found it. Once the lowly hayloft of a country retreat for nobles, it’s been elevated to something wonderful. It’s rustic – think exposed brick, cooling stone floors and original wood beams – but with the kind of luxe touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance townhouse. We love the juxtaposition of homely vibes with ornate flourishes. Who knew chandeliers could look so good in a barn? Set on a private estate, with lush gardens all around, the owners are your only neighbours. Signora Rosa will welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a slice of homemade torta), and the whole family is on hand to help, while also respecting your privacy. There are two complimentary bicycles available for guests, making the five-minute walk to the local town even quicker. Here you can pick up groceries to cook up an alfresco feast; you’ll want to make use of the pretty, shaded outdoor dining area with views over the immaculate grounds. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven, so you’d better start practising your dough spinning. We’d happily hole up in this place for a week or two, but with a car, it’s the perfect base for exploring Tuscany. 

Homespun Renaissance

Sitting among the green hills of the Valdinievole, this quintessentially Tuscan villa puts guests in the middle of some truly gorgeous scenery, while offering plenty to do should they ever tire of the views – although we think that's unlikely to happen.

During the warmer months, it's not difficult to imagine countless hours spent in the home's outdoor space. The swimming pool is sure to be popular on summer afternoons, but you can just as easily enjoy the sunshine while playing table tennis on the terrace or enjoying hearty alfresco feasts on the pergola.

The home itself is fairly traditional in character, with wooden beams and exposed stonework lending a certain rustic charm. That being said, you can tell from the wealth of contemporary features that the host has put a lot of effort into the interior in recent years – the sleek kitchen and upper-floor Turkish bath are a bit of a giveaway, as are the bar games and decorative motorcycle that all add a bit of Americana to proceedings.

You can see a whole lot of Tuscany from the home's balconies and terrace, but if you ever want a bit more of a close-up, the thermal baths and opulent villas in the spa town of Montecatini Terme are 4km away, while the medieval city of Pistoia is around 15km away.

Just outside the famed artist town of Montecatini Terme, this sprawling villa in the Tuscan countryside is well-placed for exploring not only nearby Florence, but lovely Lucca as well. But while we love the position of this home, we think some guests might end up finding it difficult to leave the premises – with a beautiful mature garden and large swimming pool, this home’s many charms are capped off by a floodlit private tennis court, ping pong table, foosball, and a children’s play area. And that’s before we get to the horses. Keen equestrians – or just the horse curious – will love the fact that this home is neighboured by horse paddocks, with riding lessons and excursions available on request. Inside, the home is decorated in the traditional Tuscan manner, with classic tiling, exposed ceiling beams, and classic furnishings all in evidence. There’s a separate apartment available too, which we think would work wonders for families or friends travelling together. Not that you’ll be spending much time indoors though – with covered terraces, plenty of sun loungers round the pool, and shady spots set up under the trees, this is a home that revels in indoor-outdoor living.

This magnificent yellow house sits in the rolling countryside between Lucca and Tuscany, offering incredible views of this lush, green part of Italy. The home is elegant and unique, with ceiling frescoes in the bedrooms and even a consecrated chapel in the grounds – this would be a magical setting for a wedding. 

Special events aside, this is a wonderful holiday home whether you’re travelling with friends or family. There’s plenty of room, including a spacious traditional kitchen – why not hire a private chef and enjoy an alfresco feast on the terrace? The outdoor space is marvellous, set over several terraced levels. The result is incredible views of the Tuscan countryside from every angle. The swimming pool is sheltered from view by a row of trees on one side, and open to sweeping views on the other – it’s glorious at any time of day, but we’re particularly fond of a sunset swim. 

The villa is only a thirty-minute drive from Lucca, and within easy reach of Florence too – the train to Florence takes an hour and eleven minutes. Spend a morning in Lucca admiring the architecture from a picturesque square, then stroll around the medieval centre with a gelato. For some top-notch relaxation, we recommend driving fourteen minutes to Montecatini Terme. This gem of a town boasts nine thermal spas housed in historic buildings – it feels like stepping back in time in the best way. 

There’s so much to see and do in this beautiful part of Italy, and this spectacular home is the ideal base from which to explore. When you’ve taken in all the sights you can manage, recline on the terrace with a glass of Chianti. Bliss.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

San Gimignano and its iconic towers are a twenty-two-minute drive. It’s a wonderful day trip – spend your time meandering around the narrow cobbled streets, stopping to enjoy coffee and gelato in a piazza, and soaking up the atmosphere of this historic town.

You'll find it tucked away in Terranuova Bracciolini, surrounded by natural beauty and just a thirty-minute drive from Arezzo. Here, you're in a convenient spot for exploring Tuscany, with Siena and Florence both just shy of an hour's drive away.

We're completely infatuated with this home's rustic charm. It's set across two pastel-hued and ivy-clad villas, making it the perfect base for families and large groups. We especially love the majestic glass-walled recreation space, dressed to the nines for entertaining, with a banquet-style dining table, cosy lounge, ping pong and billiards table. 

Inside, it's a quaint canvas of terracotta tiled floors, shuttered windows and timber beamed ceilings, while contemporary comforts promise a want-for-nothing stay. Did we mention the wine? You'll be staying on a property with its own vineyard, after all. From here, you'll also be well-positioned for visiting the historic town of Lucca – just a twenty-minute drive away as well as the region's local beaches, which are reachable from the house in thirty-five minutes.

The Winemaker's Neighbour

Tranquil doesn’t even begin to describe this wonderful apartment. It’s tucked away in the hills above Bagni di Lucca, in a tiny village that’s quiet even in the height of summer. You’ll share the grounds and outdoor pool with four villas, but there’s plenty of space. Stunning views can be admired from almost every angle here, with far-reaching vistas of the surrounding hills and forests. The apartment is rustic in style, with exposed stone walls and terracotta floor tiles. It’s the perfect retreat for a romantic getaway. 

Italian Stone

This elegant home in Tuscany is in a dreamy spot in a valley, in a countryside setting that leads to absolute relaxation. The villa is full of character, with antique furniture and wooden beams, in addition to mesmerising views. 

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. Dry off on a sun lounger with a good book, or start a table tennis tournament with your friends. 

In the evening, set up outside at the long dining table. You might like to arrange for a local chef to come and cook for you – that way you can enjoy a cocktail hour on the terrace before dining as the sun sets beyond the valley. 

The villa is only a short walk along the river to the centre of peaceful Poggibonsi, so you can easily dine out in the local restaurants or grab a gelato. Montemorli vineyard is just a twenty-minute walk up the hill, while the medieval beauty of San Gimignano is a mere twenty-one-minute drive away. Slightly further afield, you can be in Siena in thirty minutes, and Florence in an hour.

Already built by the 17th century, according to the Medici maps drawn up then, this medieval borghi might even be decades older. Though we're unsure of its age, there's no doubt of its beauty. The interior with exposed beams and brick is what you'd expect from an older home, but the traditional style might feel dated to some. Still, it's comfortable and charming, giving way to a sweeping garden. Kids will love the opportunity to run around on the lush green grass whilst adults take advantage of the sun loungers, poolside and terrace seating. Our favourite is the dining table under the vine-covered pergola. You'll find the renowned spas of Casciana Terme or Monsummano Terme minutes away.

Tuscan Essence

Once owned by winemaker Marchesi Torrigiani, this beautiful hillside villa still features the vineyards that were once, and will likely always be, the heart of this farmland. A beautiful sight, it’s only marginally rivalled by the view of the Chianti Hills which is sprawled out right before you from the elevated position of this home. When you walk the grounds in search of new angles to photograph, you might stumble upon a wood-burning oven and picnic style-benches. Get the family together and venture down to barbecue lunch and dine alfresco in the shade of the towering trees. 

With another home on the property, you’ll likely make new friends around the communal pool when you’re spending lazy days in the sunlounger. Catch up on a novel, drink in hand, as the aroma of olives from the nearby tree drifts to you on the breeze.

Away from the home, you can find the mediaeval village of San Donato only minutes away. Walk the winding streets, marvel at the architecture, and sit down at one of the local restaurants for a beautiful lunch before returning home for an afternoon nap, followed by a glass of chianti wine out on the terrace.

A sixteenth-century villa in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.
