We particularly liked the stone fireplace and curated pieces of art dotted around that make for a real visual statement. Through to the bedrooms, where you'll find minimalist interiors, crisp white bed linens and antique objects that combines traditional touches with modern influence. Spend mornings idly relaxing underneath the warm Tuscan sun by the stunning 20-metre lap pool or recharging in the sauna, before cycling to the nearby village of Montisi. Take a half-hour drive to the famous vineyards of Montepulciano and bring a few bottles of vino back with you – to be chilled in the home's wine cellar and enjoyed out on the terrace, as you look out across the medieval ruins of Montelifrè Castle. The interior is a typically Tuscan affair, with terracotta tiled floors underfoot, a large brick fireplace to gather around, and earth tones that soothe the soul, all sitting beneath an exposed beam ceiling. In the bedroom, elegantly draped material adds a touch of Renaissance drama, while the spacious marble bathroom is perfect for post-pool pampering sessions.

Step into the shared outdoor space, and you'll find yourself surrounded by eighteen acres of pristine protected forest, with breathtakingly beautiful walks departing right from the front door. In addition to the stunning gardens (complete with table football, table tennis and a playground), you can up your relaxation game at the thermal baths in Rapolano Terme, a fifteen-minute drive away.

If you'd like to explore further afield, the lovely medieval city of Siena and the hilltop Renaissance town of Montepulciano are well within day-trip distance, with both approximately half an hour's drive away.

Rigomagno Rustico

When the evening sun hits the hills around these villas, you’ll understand why they call it “golden hour”. Glowing gold in the evening and emerald green at the peak of the day, there’s nothing but undulating countryside as far as the eye can see. Well, except for cedars standing sentinel all up the driveway to this old farm. Slip into the swimming pool and cool off from the heat of the day, and dry out on a lounger on the lawn. Outdoor dining is set up for the whole group at the long table beneath the veranda, where the view stretches for miles. Inside, the main house has been transformed into a modern haven, with a few traditional touches. Arched windows let in that stunning view and the wooden ceiling and staircase, plus thick timber beams in the lounge are reminiscent of the old country idyll. The most impressive spot has to be the dining room, where a banquet-length wooden table sits beneath a sleek archway in a statement of minimalism that wouldn’t look out of place in a monastery’s refectory. A smaller villa with its own kitchen houses two bedrooms, and there are three self-contained apartments too. This place is ideal for a big group that all appreciate their own space. 

Dolce Far Niente

This converted Tuscan home provides a great base to explore one of Italy’s most iconic areas from. Though the interior perhaps lacks a bit of cosiness, it is well-kept and provides you with all you need for a comfortable stay, including a fully-equipped kitchen and a nice open-plan dining area which leads onto a private terrace. Guests can also make use of the resort’s facilities, such as the shared outdoor pool and rooftop. Make the most of the area by sampling some of its famous wines and visiting the picturesque towns.

It's homes like this that give Tuscany its reputation as a blissful place which to retreat for a week or three. The surrounding landscape of vineyards and rolling hillsides is as picturesque as you could possibly imagine, while the home itself is bursting with character.

Much of this is down to its long history. Built at the end of the 18th century as a mill, it was converted into a farmhouse before becoming the handsome getaway you see today. This heritage is writ large across the interior, with stone archways, wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiles underfoot a treat for those that melt at the sight of rustic design – which includes us. The more contemporary features – including the freestanding bathtub and modern kitchen – have been tastefully added to retain this inimitable charm.

Outside, it's a slightly different story. The hot tub and swimming pool in the middle of the garden are comparatively recent additions to the address but are no less welcome for it. As well as that, there are a couple of spots for alfresco feasts to dine among the fragrant flowers and trees that fill the grounds.

Although the location is certainly secluded, you don't have to venture far to find things to see and do. The medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano is only 4.5km away and is famous for its Renaissance-era buildings and globally-coveted wine. A little further afield, the cities of Perugia and Siena are 63 and 67km away respectively, so well within range for a day trip.

Sure, some of the bedrooms are a little bit of a squeeze, and the kitchen isn’t the biggest, but the home offers everything needed for a restful stay. Perfectly placed to explore the local areas by car, we’d recommend a trip to Pienza, just fifteen minutes away, to sample their famous Pecorino cheese.

This hilltop haven is perfect for those looking for a quiet, calm and restful stay in Tuscany. The villa can be found thirteen minutes outside of Asciano, with its medieval centre, amid stunning rolling countryside that catches the eye from every angle. 

The villa has been restored from an elegant country house, so it retains lots of lovely Tuscan charm ¬– think heavy wood beams, terracotta accents and a classic stone facade. The layout is quirky, with two loft spaces housing the bedrooms – the plus side to all the stairs is that the views are incredible. 

The countryside that surrounds this home is lush and green, with plenty of nearby routes for hikers to get stuck into. It’s also very close to Chianti country, so you might like to seek out a vineyard tour, or at the very least pick up a bottle to enjoy on the terrace one evening. 

In terms of day trips, you can’t do better than driving thirty-five minutes to Siena. It’s a glorious city to explore, with its rich history and a wealth of fantastic restaurants. After a day out, head back to the villa for a dip in the pool in the early evening – it’s a splendid spot for a sunset swim.

This gorgeous house is nestled within the medieval hilltop village of Castelmuzio. The vibrant garden features cypress, fig, pomegranate and local flowers, with its own plunge pool and spaces for sunbathing and alfresco dining. There are three main suites, plus a single bedroom that shares an entrance and en-suite with one of the double rooms, making it ideal for families. It's a twenty-minute drive to the autostrada A1, and we do recommend hiring a car here if you're hoping to take a trip to the cities of Siena or Florence.
