This rustic Italian retreat looks out over a peaceful Umbrian valley, yet it’s only a short walk into the historic centre of Amelia for the local cheese shop, bars, bakeries and grocery shops. This former farmhouse boasts panoramic views, a private swimming pool, and plenty of character. Everyone will love milling about the garden. We're big fans of the traditional details inside – think chestnut ceiling beams, terracotta floors, and antique Sicilian majolica pottery. This recently restored 19th-century farmhouse is all you could wish for from a stay in Umbria. We love the character features such as the Barberino stone walls, terracotta floors, and barrel vault ceilings with exposed chestnut beams. The large rooms and furnishings wonderfully evoke noble hunting lodges of the last century. 

The real highlights here, though, are the beautifully-kept garden with its lawns and fragrant rose, lavender and rosemary bushes. There are around 5 hectares to explore as well. Spend your days lounging by the gorgeous saltwater pool, admiring the views over the countryside, relax in the hammock or enjoy an alfresco lunch under the jasmine-covered pergola. An impressive centuries-old oak also provides pleasant natural shade – the perfect spot to read a book.

Out and about, explore the olive groves, hills and woods of Umbria on foot, mountain bike or horseback. Or head to medieval hill town Lugnano in Teverina, a twenty-five-minute drive away. The Marmore Falls, a man-made waterfall created by the ancient Romans, is thirty minutes in the car and well worth a trip.

You’re likely to spend much of your time laying back on the sunbeds or swimming in the pool, but in the evenings, the glass gazebo is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of local wine. Sitting within a medieval borgo (little village) whose heyday was the early 17th century, this villa complex embraces old-world Umbria. It’s pure peace and quiet out here between the endless olive groves (extra virgin olive oil is the region’s speciality) and rolling hills covered in a patchwork of fields. It’s five kilometres to Monte Castello di Vibio with its ancient theatre and fifteen kilometres to the pretty town of Todi for restaurants and supermarkets.

The yard, where wheat was once threshed by hand, is now home to a smattering of chairs and tables for tipples in the sunshine. The porticoed upper terrace is the perfect spot for breakfast, or big barbecue lunches, with views of the 22-hectare estate. Accommodation is split between three separate buildings set around the courtyard. Two annexes have their own kitchenettes, living rooms and dining area so the group can spread out. Low, wood-beamed ceilings and old agricultural tools on the walls give that rustic farmhouse feel. But the real bonus inside is the dedicated celebration room which is a vast, barn-like space which can be set up for dining, dancing or even a spot of yoga.
