Even though it was recently renovated, Jewel Tones nevertheless manages to hold on to its character. Upon walking in you’re greeted by an open living space with high ceilings and large windows letting in lots of natural light. The impressive array of both vintage and modern furnishings makes for a vibrant atmosphere, with plenty of room to sit and relax, or to entertain. The two full bathrooms are also a bit of a luxury. And it's located in a quiet alley, so it there's plenty of peace and quiet despite being on the ground floor in San Marco.

The views from this home are pretty spectacular. Facing the Cannaregio Canal, you definitely won’t forget that you’re in Venice anytime soon. A mix of Art Nouveau touches and contemporary minimalism, it’s the past meets the present in an elegant version. We particularly loved the modern kitchen – it’s a dream for any chef because of the high-quality appliances and a sociable kitchen island. The location isn’t the most central (it’s a thirty-minute walk away from Piazza San Marco), but Cannaregio is also a charming neighbourhood – and the nearest Vaporetto stop isn't far away.

This home has probably one of the comfiest sofas – it's made of down and feather, so it's very soft, and you'll sink right into it – we felt like Lord Byron lounging here.

The location is as splendid as this apartment – historic Piazza San Marco and Accademia Bridge are just over a five-minute stroll. Opera lovers will be over the moon to learn that Teatro La Fenice is a mere three-minute saunter. It would be reasonable to expect somewhere in San Marco, right by the Grand Canal, to be pretty busy, with streams of tourists winding their way along the streets outside. We can’t stress how little that matches up to the reality of A Call For Quiet. It’s incredibly peaceful, and a wonderful atmosphere to return to after a long day of walking around the city.

For somewhere between San Marco and the Rialto bridge, A Call for Calm is remarkably quiet. It’s far from the main thoroughfares, the narrow alleyways that nevertheless carry tens of thousands of tourists to and from St. Mark’s Square every day. It’s also, location aside, a lovely place to stay. The hefty beams stand out, but every part of the design works perfectly together, and while it can only hold three people, Mario looks after a couple of other places in the building, so larger groups can look at potential combinations.


A Call For Calm

On an alleyway that leads down to the bank of the Grand Canal, A Call For Peace is in something of a magical position. Inside, it’s surprisingly modern, which is unusual for Venice, but some of the original structural features have been kept on to tie the flat to the history of its setting. It’s a nice touch, and works really well. Given the layout of the bedrooms, it feels like it would work particularly well for families, and the proximity to all the main attractions backs that up.

A perfect mix of elegance and warmth, this classic-contemporary apartment offers comfortable living in the heart of Venice’s Dorsoduro district. We loved the dark wood floors, oak ceiling beams, rich red accents and wrought iron details. There’s a spacious living area for regrouping before dinner plans and a cosy mezzanine level for enjoying quiet moments with a good book. If you’re a fan of cooking, the fully-equipped kitchen has everything you need for putting together Italian-inspired dishes but when you fancy hanging up your chef’s apron, head over to Al Profeta, a lovely pizzeria, only a ten-minute walk from your doorstep.

The famous Piazza San Marco is an eight-minute water bus ride away. Get your culture fix at the Basilica and Museo Correr before drifting along the Grand Canal on a gondola. Stop for an aperitivo in one of Venice’s glitzy rooftop bars or go for a more informal setting at Osteria All’Arco, a local favourite next to the Rialto Bridge.

A little more contemporary than many other dwellings you'll find nearby, there's still a taste of tradition in the antique furnishings, the wooden doors that line the main living space and the prettily tiled terrace that lies on the other side. Otherwise, the design is fairly minimalist, with stark white walls and parquet flooring, plus a sleek kitchen that may be a little basic, but will more than suffice for modest meals.

Of course, if cooking isn't on the agenda, there's a good selection of restaurants and bars in the nearby Santa Croce neighbourhood that will keep you fuelled up. One for art and culture lovers – this home is just a two-minute stroll from Giardini della Biennale, which hosts the Venice Biennale Art Festival, the largest and most famous international art exhibition. On Via Garibaldi (an eight-minute saunter), you'll find some of Venice's best restaurants, as well as a market selling fresh produce. This part of the island is ideal if you want to mingle with the locals and get away from the main tourist areas. That said, it's only two boat stops away from the beaches of the Lido, and historic Piazza San Marco is just over a twenty-minute walk.

Back at this home, your hosts occasionally run art exhibitions here, so you may see some beautiful works of art adorning the walls, in addition to the modern pieces already displayed. The house has been carefully restored with local Venetian materials, such as the kitchen with its reclaimed marble from an ancient Abbey near San Marco. A leisurely twenty-five-minute wander will take you to Ponte dell’Accademia, which boasts one of the most spectacular views of the Grand Canal. There are plenty of charming osterias and bars close to home, so you’re never far from your next great meal or glass of wine.

You’re just a two-minute walk from the Rialto Bridge here – not that you’d know it thanks to your quiet surroundings – and the home even overlooks one of Venice’s iconic waterways, though you may be better off elsewhere if it’s views of the Grand Canal you’re after. There’s even a private roof terrace for enjoying an evening cocktail or two, and when it comes to sleeping arrangements, one of the double beds can be split into two singles for extra flexibility.

Experience the quieter side of Venice in this elegant Castello apartment. You’re close enough to the main sights to walk –  just ten minutes to St Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge – but far enough away to escape the crowds. Meanwhile, Castello’s many laid-back wine bars, traditional restaurants and peaceful churches are yours to discover – for central Venice, the location couldn't be much better. The apartment itself has been wonderfully restored, adding elegant, modern touches to the original wood and stonework.

Jewel on the Grand Canal

How's that for a view? Looking directly out over St. Mark's Basilica and Square and with the water in the background, you wouldn't be blamed for spending a sizeable portion of your trip on the balcony here. Don't snub the interior, though – there are several nooks you can break off into, meaning it's perfect for two couples who might want some alone time.
