As soon as you set eyes on this tiny home, you'll see just how special it is. It's covered in leafy plants and lush flowers, and sits in an elevated spot, so you can enjoy dreamy sea views beyond the flowers. Outside, there's a covered terrace where you can relax with a good book or sip sundowners in the evenings. Inside, you'll find lots of character – from wooden beam ceilings to exposed stonework. It may be small and the kitchen is best suited for light bites, but you can't deny it has oodles of charm.

We adore this contemporary home due to the unique characteristics sprinkled throughout. Spacious and drenched in sunlight, imagine yourself cooking an all-day breakfast in the kitchen. Not only will you be bang in the centre, next to the Farmers’ Market, but your large room was constructed as part of a traditional old Madeiran embroidery factory – and mementos are profusely distributed around the property. Its past means you will have plenty of light via the tall windows and high ceilings, while the minimalist monochrome décor is calming, clean and uncluttered. Perhaps the centrepiece of this comfortable home is the communal terrace which has its own kitchen and plenty of tables and chairs for al fresco dining – plus a hanging wicker chair that seats two for a more intimate night ‘in’. Your home is the hub for touring the island, with a bus stop right outside, and all of Funchal’s many restaurants, cafes, bars and shops are reachable on foot. This villa may be in Funchal's Old Town area, but the boxy home with a wealth of amenities is as contemporary as they come.

During a stay here, you'll find it a breeze to enjoy the island's generous climate. There are plenty of spots to do nothing more than lie back and relax, with our favourite being up on the terrace complete with a stunning view of the sparkling Med. If the heat ever gets too much, you can retire to the swimming pool for a while, and you've also got a barbecue and alfresco table ready and waiting for summer evening feasts.

The living quarters are bright and inviting, thanks in large part to the glass doors that flood the interior with Madeiran sunshine and the abundance of sleek finishes that catch this natural asset rather well. Those that are happiest with something delicious bubbling away on the stove will be more than content with the vast kitchen, while the games room with a pool table and fitness equipment will keep the excitable occupied for a while.

That being said, there's plenty to do in the surrounding area, too. There's a stretch of beach less than 300 metres from the home, as well as a good choice of bars and restaurants lying within walking distance.

This apartment is perfect for those wanting to drop their bags and step out into the heart of Funchal to explore. Comfortable for four people, just bear in mind that at full occupancy, two guests will draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. There’s also no air conditioning here, so it could get a little warm in summer – that said, fans are provided and you can throw open the balcony doors to welcome in the fresh sea air as you soak up the views.
