Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

Apartments don’t come much more poetic than this one, located in Lisbon’s historic Chiado district. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.

Painted all white, with shuttered windows and warm wood floors, it's a traditional apartment with some far from traditional wall art (we see you, Julia Roberts). A bright living area boasts a particularly squashy corner sofa and a modern dining table with chairs for up to six. The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. You'll even have a narrow balcony here, on which to sip coffee, read a newspaper and people watch on the street below. On the lower side of Alfama, you'll get to enjoy a view of the Sé Cathedral, and all the city's sights are within walking distance – we recommend you start your tour at the nearby Praça do Comércio.

If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time.

The Baixa district was completely rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in the mid-eighteenth century – now it's lined with neoclassical architecture, outstanding museums, stunning squares, and plenty of shopping opportunities, and this characterful apartment is right in the heart of it. Just a five-minute walk to the Praça do Comércio, you'll feel immersed in Lisbon's culture, history and commercial centre. Verging on old-timey Alfama, you really couldn't be better placed location-wise for all there is to eat, drink and do here. If you feel like a quiet indoor moment's downtime, relax in the bright, contemporary living/dining area with a glass of Lisbon wine. We love how the original features are still intact, while the modern furniture merges old and new in elegant fashion. Knock up a homemade piri piri chicken in the sleek kitchen to be enjoyed in the stylish dining area with Eames-inspired chairs. Although, with a host of eateries and family-run restaurants right on your doorstep, we think you'll be dining out most evenings.

Baixa is our favourite place to stay in Lisbon. It's packed with restaurants and cafes, all while being a short walk away from the city sights. Golden Feathers is right in front of a famous tram 28 stop, so there's no excuse for staying in. This is a soft, comfortable home that mixes metallic hues with high-quality materials. While we would like to see a bit more of a personal touch in what is clearly a rental home, it's a great base for urban exploration.

Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.

Housed in an 18th-century building just ​​seconds from Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, this beautifully bright home is a stylish, comfortable base from which to explore the city’s most iconic sights. With its Juliet balconies, frescoed walls and laid-back contemporary furnishings, there’s a feeling of history blended with a modern minimalism that feels effortlessly Portuguese. We love the kitchen’s stone sink and the sunny dining area that invites breakfasts over fresh coffee and pastéis de nata, while the bedroom is pared-back and elegant with its Juliet balcony proffering red rooftop views. With a lovely desk space at your disposal too, there will be no shortage of inspiration should business call, though, with countless things to see and do on your doorstep, we suggest less work and more play when you can. Speaking of sightseeing, the Santa Justa Lift is just a seven-minute walk away, São Jorge Castle is walkable in fifteen, while Praça do Comércio is thirteen minutes away on foot.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Spend mornings curled up on the sofa, lost in a good book, and evenings sharing homemade grub and bottles of wine around the dining table. Relax in the golden Iberian sunshine on the terrace before heading out into the atmospheric streets that surround your home. 

Wander over to the Carmo Convent, a reminder of the destructive earthquake of 1755, then mosey down to Praça do Comércio to admire the egg-yolk-yellow Pombaline-style buildings. If you’re feeling peckish, catch the iconic 28 tram to Alfama for traditional tascas or sample the upscale restaurants of elegant Chiado.

A real gem of a place, in a great location, this home is perfect if you're here to experience the buzz of city life in Lisbon. Part of a traditional period building, it's been beautifully restored to show off its best features – the living room's three sets of French doors out to the narrow, wrought iron balcony, the window shutters and the exposed parts of the wooden pombolina skeleton structure this area is known for.
