We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

The home isn't the most unique or stylish space, however, for solo travellers or couples looking for a practical base, this is the perfect fit. Located just 15 minutes outside of the bustling city centre, this apartment is a perfect romantic retreat. The expansive terrace is ideal for starting your morning with a mindful yoga session, before taking a short stroll to the Praça Marquês de Pombal and the Parque Eduardo VII to enjoy the sights. Use the sightseeing buses to explore the city, or wander down the Avenida da Liberdade towards Baixa-Chiado, where you'll find a selection of cafes and bakeries for breakfast and lunch. Admire the neoclassical architecture and shop along the boutique-lined Rua Augusta where artists and artisans peddle their wares. Or hop on the Elevador de Santa Justa and make the vertical 47-metre journey to enjoy spectacular views of the city – it’s a bit of a cliché, but some things are clichéd for a reason.

If you wander through the winding streets of the Mouraria neighbourhood, you might come across this traditional apartment building, clad in delicately patterned tiles. You might expect that the inside will be similarly traditional, but this flat is sleek and modern, inspired by Scandi-style minimalism rather than the typical Portuguese design. In spite of being closer to an apart-hotel than a private residence, we liked having the friendly concierge team on-hand offer a variety of services – from massages to tour guides they have the best contacts in town. And, while it's still disputed whether fado was born in Mouraria or the Alfama area, one thing is for certain – the streets that surround this apartment are full of fado houses and monuments to the music. Grab a glass of port, sit back, and be transported back hundreds of years by these haunting melodies. 

Lioz Balcony

If you like a spot of shopping followed by lunch (who doesn't?), then this home near Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's answer to the Champs Élysées, is within walking distance. Here, you'll find plenty of boutiques, bars and restaurants, and the Praça dos Restauradores is nearby, too. We love this home's small balcony with its views over the area's rooftops. And while the kitchen is compact, there's everything you need to make some Portuguese cuisine. One thing we must mention, though, is two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room at full capacity.

The place is clutter-free and well-thought-out. There’s a fully-equipped kitchenette for rustling up quick meals and a dining table that doubles as a laptop-friendly workspace should you have some emails to attend to. Wake up feeling refreshed after an extra-long snooze then head out and explore your locale. 

Nip over to Chiado for breakfast in a sleek cafe then tick off the city’s must-see sights including the Carmo Convent, Castelo de São Jorge and Rua Augusta Arch. Weave your way through Alfama’s higgledy-piggledy streets, easily reached by foot or public transport, before stopping to soak up views of the River Tagus from the Portas do Sol viewport – we think it’s an experience best enjoyed with a glass of green wind in hand.

With its wood floors, contemporary decor and a large glass door that leads out onto a Juliet balcony, you can sip your morning coffee or evening glass of wine while taking in views of the neighbourhood's historic buildings. We love the bright red tiles in the kitchen and the bedroom’s soothing neutral palette that invites a serene night’s sleep. You’ll relish taking relaxing soaks under the bathroom’s rainfall shower, especially after a day of walking up and down Lisbon’s iconic hills. Speaking of exploring, you’ve within easy reach of the city’s main sights on foot – the Alfama district, São Jorge Castle, the Carmo Convent and the Santa Justa Lift are just a twenty-minute walk away while the Praça do Comércio is a twenty-five-minute stroll from your door.

Location-wise, it's hard to get more authentically Lisbon than the hilltop district of Graça. While the tourists might be wandering the winding streets of next-door neighbour Alfama, for those in the know, Graça is where it's at. This charming apartment is located in a particularly picturesque part of this lovely neighbourhood, with views of the city’s seven hills and iconic red roofs. The vista inspires the lively colour palette that we find inside this two-bedroom home. We love how the home maximises the available space with vibrant energy and cosy corners that make the most of every square foot. Granted, it’s on the fourth floor with no lift, but after a few days of training on Lisbon's hilly streets, you'll be at the top before you know it. Back down at street level, you'll find a quaint family-run cafe that's perfect for breakfast, while there's a bar next to the nearby church that's one of the best spots in the city for a scenic sunset. Most of the city's main sights are within a twenty-minute walk, and there are good transport links to take you back up the hill to your home at the end of a long day of exploring.

Sunshine Sundae

The building that homes Lioz Marble looks like a typical azulejo-paved townhouse, but the moment you enter, it's a new world. This home is minimalist, ultra-modern, and maximizes the assets of this compact space.  We liked the array of extra services provided by the friendly host team, such as breakfast and on-demand cleaning. Located in Mouraria, the mediaeval neighbourhood best characterised by the sounds of fado, you'll be within walking distance to all central sights. 

Lioz Marble

Located on a quiet street in the authentically Portuguese Arroios neighbourhood, this sweet apartment is up in the eaves of a traditional building. Inside, it’s a contemporary space with white walls and minimal furnishings. Hardwood floors are topped with cotton rugs to add some colour and warmth to the home. In the mornings, enjoy the view from the windows with an espresso and famed custard tart, followed by a stroll around your locale. The Campo dos Mártires da Pátria gardens are sun-soaked and serene, interrupted only by the occasional calls of the ducks and chickens that make their home here. Old school cafes and hole-in-the-wall eateries line the streets while Avenida Almirante Reis, just a ten-minute walk away, is one of Lisbon’s main arteries, connecting you to the iconic Tagus river and downtown district.

Step out of your building and you’ll find yourself right on the edge of Praça dos Restauradores, one of the city’s most bustling squares. It joins up with the leafy Avenida de Liberdade and places you a fifteen-minute walk from the upscale Príncipe Real neighbourhood – one of our favourite bairros for food and drink.

If you’re looking for a central base, you can’t do much better than this little studio we spotted overlooking Rossio Square, one of the liveliest areas in the whole of Lisbon. Whether you’re here for the monuments, the architecture, or the world-class cuisine, this place has got you covered, situated within easy reach of the city’s most popular attractions. Start with a coffee in the main square then set off for a day of sightseeing, making sure to stop by Lisbon Cathedral to soak up stunning rooftop views of the Capital. 

When you’ve had your fill of being out and about, you’ll come home to your recently renovated apartment, where you’ll find all the essentials you’d expect from a nifty hotel alternative. Rustle up a Portuguese-inspired dish in the kitchenette, then pour yourself a glass of wine and tuck into your home-cooked feast as  you gaze out at the city’s rooftops. We don’t know about you, but we can’t think of a better way to unwind. 

Squared Away

With unobstructed views of Alfama, Lisbon's charismatic medieval neighbourhood, this apartment will place you in the best location to explore the city's rich history. It's next to the Sé de Lisboa cathedral, so you won't have to walk far to see your first attraction. You're also no more than a five-minute walk to Baixa – the historical and geographical heart of the city – where you'll discover magnificent plazas, grand avenues and impressive Pombaline architecture. A timeless, rustic home with original azulejo tilework, antique wood-panelled walls, a standalone bath, and two reading nooks in the living room. There's hardly a corner in this home that couldn't feature in an interiors magazine as a prime example of rustic chic. The classical decor immediately had us in the mood to seek out another must-see/hear Lisbon experience, fado. You've got a few choices within a ten-minute walk, but the elegant Casa da Linhares stood out to us. Where better to listen to this mysterious and melancholic music while you dine on typically Portuguese dishes than in the foundation of an earthquake-ruined palace?

After filling up on traditional Portuguese pastries, step out of your building and onto Praça dos Restauradores, one of the centre’s four grand squares – you’ll be struck by just how quiet your place is despite its bustling location. Turn left and stroll no more than five minutes into the heart of downtown. You’ll find endless boutiques, brunch spots and coffee houses plus the famous Santa Justa elevator and Carmo Convent. Continue walking for ten minutes to reach the picturesque river Tagus or take the historic 28E tram route from Praça Martim Moniz and trundle uphill to São Jorge castle. In the evening, just before sunset, head back to your pad and share a bottle of wine on your spacious private terrace – a real rarity in central Lisbon.

Located between Maritim Moniz and Intendente, this stylish and sophisticated home is in one of Lisbon's trendiest neighbourhoods. If you want to visit some historic sights, Lisbon Cathedral and São Jorge Castle are both around a twenty-minute walk away. Or it's a mere five-minute walk to Intendente metro station. But the neighbourhood has much more to offer than just the proximity to the sights - this is a multi-cultural area where you're just as likely to find extraordinary Nepalese restaurants as you are Portuguese pastries. Inside this apartment, every room here is a treat to spend time in, but if we had to choose a favourite, we'd go for the rustic kitchen with its huge, sturdy wooden beams and butcher's block table. There’s even views over towards São Jorge Castle. Although it’s pretty busy in this popular neighbourhood, you’re just a short way from wonderful attractions, such as the Natural History Museum or the Lisbon Botanical Gardens. You’ll also find plenty of high-end restaurants and bars in this neighbourhood. Our insider tip is to visit Red Frog – an intimate and stylish speakeasy-style bar, perfect for late-night cocktails in this vibrant city.

Situated on a quiet backstreet, Marcelo’s apartment is a comfy, well finished, Lisboeta-style bolthole in the trendy Intendente neighbourhood. Tastefully furnished with everything you need for the perfect city break—or a longer stay, which we guarantee you’ll be considering after tasting the local custard tarts. Traditional tiles, that the region is so famous for, adorn the walls of the bedroom and living spaces and are charmingly reproduced on the cushions. Enjoy an espresso and a pastry at the cosy breakfast nook before taking to Lisbon’s cobbled streets—catch the unmistakable 28 tram from nearby Martim Moniz if you don’t fancy climbing the hills. The lively Largo do Intendente square is a five-minute walk east where cafes and bars serve coffee and beer into the small hours. Your nearest Metro station is closer still and will take you to downtown in just seven minutes. As soon as you arrive, pick a spot on the banks of the River Tagus to watch the sunset dip behind the iconic red suspension bridge.

Intendente is a cosmopolitan neighbourhood home to Ramiro, which is rumoured to be the best marisqueira in town should you be on the lookout for freshly caught seafood. But there are other perks to this neighbourhood too – you’ll find mom and pop food shops, great markets and good accessibility to Chiado and Alfama, which can be easily reached on foot in twenty minutes or quicker by public transit. The apartment itself is pleasant and comfortable, with a plush sofa, a balcony that overlooks the charming street and a quiet bedroom. The red tile in the kitchen and bathrooms brighten up the home and match its quirky personality, as do the patchwork throws and fabric wall hangings. For a small group desiring a quiet stay and fabulous seafood, this home is a great base for getting to know the local’s side of Lisbon without sacrificing proximity to the major tourist attractions.

Cosy and charming, this studio apartment may be compact, but it certainly is comfortable. You'll find it in a historic building that was once owned by the Menezes family, and this heritage is evident with an exposed stone wall and a quaint Juliet balcony overlooking the street and offering a partial view of the Tagus. We love how the combined living/sleeping space is bathed in Portuguese sunlight – our only quibble is the kitchen, which is quite tiny. That said, it gets the job done for breakfasts and light bites, and besides, Lisbon is home to some truly fantastic eateries and delicious local cuisine – we doubt you'll get up to much cooking, anyway.

As for discovering these top-notch eateries, you won't have to travel far. This is one of the most authentic districts in Lisbon, where restaurants are tucked away down steep, cobbled alleyways and cafes flank the bustling squares. You're right in the centre, too, just a seventeen-minute stroll from Praça do Comércio – as far as locales go, you can't really beat it. And, if your feet need a break from all the walking, a handy metro station is also nearby – win, win.

Located next door to the historic Rossio Square and providing a view of the Column of Pedro IV from the balcony, this apartment will put you right in the heart of the action in Lisbon. Here, you'll be within easy reach of the Carmo Convent, as well as a short stroll from the city’s historic harbour. The apartment is unique in its décor, with classy furniture and décor combined together with modern artwork and contemporary lighting to make it feel quaint yet trendy. There’s even a little leafy courtyard here, where you can sip your morning coffee while listening to the city wake up around you.

The Beat

Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Poetic Form

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Vermilion at Dusk

Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.
