It's covered in leafy plants and lush flowers, and sits in an elevated spot, so you can enjoy dreamy sea views beyond the flowers. Outside, there's a covered terrace where you can relax with a good book or sip sundowners in the evenings. Inside, you'll find lots of character – from wooden beam ceilings to exposed stonework. It may be small and the kitchen is best suited for light bites, but you can't deny it has oodles of charm.

Set a five-minute drive from the basalt stones of Reis Magos Beach, this homely apartment is the perfect base for short sojourns and longer stays on Madeira’s south coast. Or, if you're after something a little buzzier, there's always nearby Caniço (five minutes by car) and, a smidge further, Funchal.

Back home, you'll love this light-filled home's fresh and inviting interiors. But the clincher for us has to be that panoramic sea-facing balcony accessed from the main bedroom and living space. And if you're impressed now, imagine this spot at sunset with the boats bobbing back into shore. Rustle yourselves up some Poncha sundowners (you're on holiday, after all) and settle down for golden hour – it's quite the show.

Blessed with an enviable clifftop location looking out over Funchal Bay, we can envision long afternoons laid out on sun loungers that evolve into evenings on the terrace, with a glass of wine in hand, watching passing boats bobbing on the ocean waves as the sun slowly sinks towards the horizon.

While the Atlantic views have to be seen to be believed, the home's interior is equally as lovely. It's an easy walk down to Praia Santa Cruz, and due to the proximity to Madeira Island Airport you'll have the chance to see planes passing over to land during your stay. Take a stroll into the small city to immerse yourself in local life, whether it's picking up some essentials at a mini-market or trying some local cuisine at a nearby restaurant.
