It’s in a wonderfully central location close to many of the city’s most popular sights, including the Sé do Porto, which you can walk to in less than thirty minutes. For further afield attractions, you can hop on the metro at Heroísmo station, a 140-metre walk away. The apartment is close to restaurants and cafes, as well as some excellent pastry shops – you’ll never be too far from your next pastel de nata. We love the simplicity of this attractive home, with its petite balcony and open-plan living and dining space. It’s a great choice for a large group.

Visit the Church of Saint Ildefonso, sample local produce at the Mercado do Bolhão, or head to the Douro River for a boat trip. Bonfim is known as one of the city’s most traditional areas, full of local shops, small cafes, and authentic Portuguese restaurants – there’s also a real sense of community. When you want to see more of Porto, you need only walk a short distance to Campo 24 de Agosto station to hop on the metro. The villa is attractive, warm, and welcoming. Inside, you’ll find vibrant decor, while the outside space is centred around the petite private pool and the south-facing terrace.

Petite and pared-back, this apartment is ideally placed for sightseeing. You'll find it nestled between the shops and markets on a pedestrianised street in the heart of the city. Exploring on foot is a breeze here – or, if you'd prefer to take it easy, there are metro stops and trams nearby. Back home, the living area isn't the biggest, and the compact kitchen makes cooking anything more than a snack a challenge. However, each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and the uncluttered design is a reprieve after a day out and about. There's even a tiny balcony overlooking the street – perfect for a quick spot of people-watching.

Guests rave about the location of this Porto apartment, and it’s easy to see why. Set in a quiet corner of Ribeira, the Douro River, Praça da Ribeira Square, and neoclassical Bolsa Palace are all just a short stroll away. It’s worth noting if six guests share, two of you will have to make do with a double sofa bed in the living space. Not ideal for some, but it could work great for family sharing. The small inner courtyard is a nice touch for sundowners, and there’s plenty of space to spill out around the dining table for lazy breakfasts of pastel de natas picked up from the nearby bakeries.

There are several things we love about this home. First of all, it's housed in a gorgeous refurbished 19th-century building that used to belong to a commander from the 1800s. The second reason is for its Harry Potter connections – the house opposite is where JK Rowling lived during her time in Porto. It’s said she wrote the first three chapters of the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone there. 

Third, but by no means least, is the sunny, large courtyard garden with its rocking chair, barbecue, sofa and dining table, which is the real highlight of this home. It's filled with roses, geraniums, and a lemon tree – it's the perfect place to gather with your family or friends. 

Inside, there are plenty of character features such as exposed stone walls, beams, shutters and traditional tiles. Whip up some bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (cod casserole) in the kitchen and enjoy it at the huge wooden table.

Out and about, there's plenty to see in this enchanting city. Jardim de São Lázaro, Lisbon's oldest municipal park, is a four-minute stroll, while the Via Catarina Shopping Mall is eight minutes on foot. It's around the same distance to Bolhão Market or head to Batalha Square, with its cafes and theatres, a ten-minute saunter from this fantastic home.

You’ll be in the heart of the city, just a five-minute walk from Coliseu do Porto and within easy reach of Clerigos Tower. For further-afield sights, you need only walk 400 metres to Bolhão Station to hop on the metro. The apartment is petite but charming, with a beautiful carved ceiling that draws the eye. The kitchen facilities are limited, but you’ll have your pick of Porto’s best restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

Cedofeita is slightly off the beaten track, but still a part of Porto's busy city centre. After you pass the neighbourhood's cosy cafes and art galleries, you'll quickly get to the riverside and other central sights. Fernando & Amalia is a simple, immaculate home with ample natural light and high-quality furniture. The building faces a busy street, which is great if you want to grab a taxi – but the communal areas are a little noisy with the windows open. We did, however, like the Porto-inspired art prints in the living room.

Located in Porto’s city centre, this practical apartment puts you in a prime position for sightseeing. The Igreja do Carmo and the Livraria Lello bookshop are within walking distance, and the nearby public transport links put you in good stead for wider exploring. The home’s minimalist decor isn’t the most inspiring and may not suit those looking for a characterful stay. But its sixth-floor position means wonderful views over the city’s rooftops, best enjoyed from the dining nook’s window or the main bedroom’s small private balcony. 


The Porto Palms

Poet's Hideout is an elegant split-level home in the tourist centre of Porto – but one of the things we love most about it is that it's still peaceful and quiet. The host has invested a lot of effort and brainpower to make the original architectural features work with modern furniture, and the end result is stunning. This home is closer to an aparthotel than a characterful private residence, but that does come with its perks, like daily cleaning and breakfast, which are included in your stay.

Whether you're a solo traveller looking for your own little nest, or a couple after a romantic dwelling, this compact yet classy apartment is ideal for a wonderful getaway to the heart of Porto. It's no wonder why this UNESCO World Heritage City is such a sought-after destination – there are plenty of sights to see and historic spots to visit, as well as fun rooftop bars and vibrant restaurants to explore – and when you stay here, you'll be within easy reach of it all.

We love this home's simple design, with a charcoal and natural wood colour scheme that feels modern and fresh. You can sit around the compact dining area and tuck into tasty pastel de natas together, and there's also a kitchenette where you can make your morning cups of coffee and light lunch bites. At the end of busy times spent exploring the city, you can fall into the big cosy bed, ready to do it all again the next day.
