Boasting views across the city, it's an excellent spot to savour a glass of port wine after sightseeing and watch the sun go down. Both bedrooms are roomy and bright, although the fifth guest will have to sleep on the sofa bed in the living area. Location-wise, you're not far from the shops on Rua de Santa Catarina or the buzz of downtown. Also nearby is Trindade Metro station for adventures further afield.

Bonfim is known as one of the city’s most traditional areas, full of local shops, small cafes, and authentic Portuguese restaurants – there’s also a real sense of community. When you want to see more of Porto, you need only walk a short distance to Campo 24 de Agosto station to hop on the metro. The villa is attractive, warm, and welcoming. Inside, you’ll find vibrant decor, while the outside space is centred around the petite private pool and the south-facing terrace.

Poet's Hideout is an elegant split-level home in the tourist centre of Porto – but one of the things we love most about it is that it's still peaceful and quiet. The host has invested a lot of effort and brainpower to make the original architectural features work with modern furniture, and the end result is stunning. This home is closer to an aparthotel than a characterful private residence, but that does come with its perks, like daily cleaning and breakfast, which are included in your stay.

Porto is a city perhaps best known for the fortified wine that borrows its name, so it only feels appropriate that this large apartment in the downtown area of the city feels like it has been designed for gathering people together. 

The space revolves around an open kitchen-dining area that looks like the trendiest restaurant in town. Here, guests can get stuck in and whip up tasty dishes, or alternatively watch the action from a seat at the large island. If you’d prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals, there's the option of hiring a private chef at this address who can take care of mealtimes. Once dinner is piping hot and ready to serve, there's a huge dining table to seat the whole party and spend long evenings around. 

If you ever fancy a breath of fresh air at any point, there's a balcony with a pleasant view of the street below. Outside, Bolhão market is only a five-minute walk away when you want to pick up some fresh, local ingredients, while Bolsa Palace can be reached in just over fifteen if you're in the mood for some culture. Finish the day with some sunset watching at the Vitória viewpoint, an eighteen-minute stroll from your doorstep.

Cedofeita is slightly off the beaten track, but still a part of Porto's busy city centre. After you pass the neighbourhood's cosy cafes and art galleries, you'll quickly get to the riverside and other central sights. Fernando & Amalia is a simple, immaculate home with ample natural light and high-quality furniture. The building faces a busy street, which is great if you want to grab a taxi – but the communal areas are a little noisy with the windows open. We did, however, like the Porto-inspired art prints in the living room.

This stylish apartment is a superb base in Porto. It’s in a wonderfully central location close to many of the city’s most popular sights, including the Sé do Porto, which you can walk to in less than thirty minutes. For further afield attractions, you can hop on the metro at Heroísmo station, a 140-metre walk away. The apartment is close to restaurants and cafes, as well as some excellent pastry shops – you’ll never be too far from your next pastel de nata. We love the simplicity of this attractive home, with its petite balcony and open-plan living and dining space. It’s a great choice for a large group.

We love the main bedroom’s French doors that lead out onto the sunny terrace – the ideal spot for alfresco breakfasts and celebratory sundowners – as well as the second bedroom’s large windows that give way to a stone-walled courtyard dotted with leafy plants. 
 
Factor in the Porto-inspired art on the walls as well as the sleek en-suites, and you’ve got everything you need for a relaxing stay. 
 
Outside of your home, you’ve got plenty to see and do within easy walking distance, including Porto Cathedral (thirteen minutes), Livraria Lello (fifteen minutes), Rua Santa Catarina (seven minutes) and the waterfront Cais da Ribeira (eighteen minutes).

Bright and welcoming, this studio apartment is an ideal base for two in Porto. You’ll be in the heart of the city, just a five-minute walk from Coliseu do Porto and within easy reach of Clerigos Tower. For further-afield sights, you need only walk 400 metres to Bolhão Station to hop on the metro. The apartment is petite but charming, with a beautiful carved ceiling that draws the eye. The kitchen facilities are limited, but you’ll have your pick of Porto’s best restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

Take a stroll around Porto, and something will immediately jump out at you – those shimmering, blue glazed azulejo tiles. They adorn many of the city's structures, transforming them from beautiful buildings into something truly extraordinary. You'll spot them at the cathedral, Terreiro da Sé and São Bento Station, all around a fifteen-minute stroll away. And if you're as taken by them as we are, we think you'll love staying in this home. 

This large, modern apartment in Porto's Bolhão takes a playful twist on these historic tiles, with geometric blue, white and black tiling in the kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling turquoise tiles in the five ensuite bathrooms. You'll also love it because it celebrates that other delectable element of Porto's DNA – food. The aforementioned kitchen in this home is state of the art – your host Rui puts on an incredible breakfast spread each day, and he can even hook you up with one of the best foodie tours in the city – simply delicious.

A stylish but still practical flat, Buckthorn would make an excellent base from which to explore the city. Bonfim is one of the trendier areas of Porto, and while the flat’s not huge, it’s well equipped, and the balcony is a nice touch. It’s important to know that this doesn’t really feel like someone’s home (for the very good reason that it isn’t), so if you want the sense of a lived-in place, you’re better off elsewhere. When it comes to objective comfort though, Buckthorn does pretty well for itself.

There are several things we love about this home. First of all, it's housed in a gorgeous refurbished 19th-century building that used to belong to a commander from the 1800s. The second reason is for its Harry Potter connections – the house opposite is where JK Rowling lived during her time in Porto. It’s said she wrote the first three chapters of the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone there. 

Third, but by no means least, is the sunny, large courtyard garden with its rocking chair, barbecue, sofa and dining table, which is the real highlight of this home. It's filled with roses, geraniums, and a lemon tree – it's the perfect place to gather with your family or friends. 

Inside, there are plenty of character features such as exposed stone walls, beams, shutters and traditional tiles. Whip up some bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (cod casserole) in the kitchen and enjoy it at the huge wooden table.

Out and about, there's plenty to see in this enchanting city. Jardim de São Lázaro, Lisbon's oldest municipal park, is a four-minute stroll, while the Via Catarina Shopping Mall is eight minutes on foot. It's around the same distance to Bolhão Market or head to Batalha Square, with its cafes and theatres, a ten-minute saunter from this fantastic home.

What this central Bolhão apartment lacks in character more than makes up for with location. All the hotspots are within easy walking distance, including the iconic Bolhão Market – just a five-minute stroll away. Need to be somewhere fast? Trindade and Bolhão Metro Stations are within 300 metres of your door, and covered parking is available next door if you plan to drive. The small balcony is a nice touch for morning coffee, and guests sharing will appreciate the two smart en-suite bathrooms for each bedroom.

Emerald Heights

This fuss-free apartment is perfectly placed to discover the charm of Porto. Situated near Sé do Porto and Bolsa Palace, this is an excellent base for those who want to explore the city’s cultural hotspots and restaurants. The apartment is simple and functional, with a balcony for sipping sundowners after a day along the Douro River (speak to your host to arrange a tour). While a great choice for those visiting on business, your host can also provide a cot and high chair for little ones, and there’s a sofa bed that could comfortably accommodate two extra guests.

But the central location doesn't mean that Poet's Swing is noisy – tucked away on a quiet street, it offers a relaxing atmosphere with beautifully refracting light from the tall windows. Spending time here is a pleasant experience, highlighted by the sleek modern furniture.
