We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.

With an address on an iconic street, this home is within walking distance of many of Porto’s top attractions. We’re talking about Mercado do Bolhão (five-minutes on foot) and the majestic Clérigos Tower, an eight minute walk away. If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.

Porto is a city perhaps best known for the fortified wine that borrows its name, so it only feels appropriate that this large apartment in the downtown area of the city feels like it has been designed for gathering people together. 

The space revolves around an open kitchen-dining area that looks like the trendiest restaurant in town. Here, guests can get stuck in and whip up tasty dishes, or alternatively watch the action from a seat at the large island. If you’d prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals, there's the option of hiring a private chef at this address who can take care of mealtimes. Once dinner is piping hot and ready to serve, there's a huge dining table to seat the whole party and spend long evenings around. 

If you ever fancy a breath of fresh air at any point, there's a balcony with a pleasant view of the street below. Outside, Bolhão market is only a five-minute walk away when you want to pick up some fresh, local ingredients, while Bolsa Palace can be reached in just over fifteen if you're in the mood for some culture. Finish the day with some sunset watching at the Vitória viewpoint, an eighteen-minute stroll from your doorstep.

Inside, the open-plan living space is welcoming and calm with checkerboard floors, white walls and stylish furnishings. Large balcony doors not only flood the home with natural light, but extend the communal area out to a private terrace – perfect for morning pastel de natas or evening churros. Rustle up breakfast in the contemporary, marble kitchen and sit down for convivial meals at the window-side dining table for eight. 

We especially love the attention to detail here, with objets d'art and chic art prints adorning the bookshelves and walls. Step inside the building and find an original marble entrance stairway, before entering your open-plan apartment that is perfect for socialising with your guests over a glass of wine or meal cooked in the fully-equipped kitchen. The neutral colour scheme, organic shapes, and natural textures create a tranquil atmosphere where you can truly relax. The south-facing bedroom is bathed in sunlight, and the private balcony has direct access to the courtyard - if you can tear yourself away from the luxury 300tc linens. The internal garden, accessible and shared with the other units, is a little oasis in an otherwise busy part of the creative heart of Porto.

The surrounding neighbourhood is a mixture of old and new architecture, and you can stroll to the banks of the Duoro River in around ten minutes. Several of the most impressive churches in Porto are within easy walking distance, including the Igreja de Santo Ildefons which is twelve minutes away. Head to the Fontainhas Viewpoint for epic panoramas, and stroll down one of Porto's most emblematic streets, Rua de Passos Manuel. There are several things we love about this home. First of all, it's housed in a gorgeous refurbished 19th-century building that used to belong to a commander from the 1800s. The second reason is for its Harry Potter connections – the house opposite is where JK Rowling lived during her time in Porto. It’s said she wrote the first three chapters of the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone there. 

Third, but by no means least, is the sunny, large courtyard garden with its rocking chair, barbecue, sofa and dining table, which is the real highlight of this home. It's filled with roses, geraniums, and a lemon tree – it's the perfect place to gather with your family or friends. 

Inside, there are plenty of character features such as exposed stone walls, beams, shutters and traditional tiles. Whip up some bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (cod casserole) in the kitchen and enjoy it at the huge wooden table.

Out and about, there's plenty to see in this enchanting city. Jardim de São Lázaro, Lisbon's oldest municipal park, is a four-minute stroll, while the Via Catarina Shopping Mall is eight minutes on foot. It's around the same distance to Bolhão Market or head to Batalha Square, with its cafes and theatres, a ten-minute saunter from this fantastic home.

Cedofeita is slightly off the beaten track, but still a part of Porto's busy city centre. After you pass the neighbourhood's cosy cafes and art galleries, you'll quickly get to the riverside and other central sights. Fernando & Amalia is a simple, immaculate home with ample natural light and high-quality furniture. The building faces a busy street, which is great if you want to grab a taxi – but the communal areas are a little noisy with the windows open. We did, however, like the Porto-inspired art prints in the living room.

A stylish but still practical flat, Buckthorn would make an excellent base from which to explore the city. Bonfim is one of the trendier areas of Porto, and while the flat’s not huge, it’s well equipped, and the balcony is a nice touch. It’s important to know that this doesn’t really feel like someone’s home (for the very good reason that it isn’t), so if you want the sense of a lived-in place, you’re better off elsewhere. When it comes to objective comfort though, Buckthorn does pretty well for itself.

Located just minutes away from the city's sights, such as Santa Catarina Street and Bolhão Market, it makes an ideal choice for those looking to explore Porto on foot. Considering the home's studio set-up, you'll find plenty of space for two here, including a walk-in closet for storage and an open kitchen and living area. Plus, you'll get to choose whether you dine out or prepare your own meals, as you'll have all the appliances required to do so here.

Cheery yellow accents, a well-considered layout and an ideal location combine to create this inviting apartment in the heart of Porto’s Sé neighbourhood. After a restful sleep in the unfussy bedroom, sit down to a typical Portuguese breakfast in the open-plan living space. When the plates are cleared, curl up on the sofa with an espresso or head out and explore your surroundings. 

The Church of Saint Ildefonso, famous for its blue and white tiled facade, is just a five-minute walk from your building. Head west for the Lello bookshop – the most beautiful of its kind – then mosey down to the riverside for a glass of something chilled in a laid-back cafe. When it’s time for something to eat, settle on a traditional restaurant in the Ribeira district.

This modern pad in the heart of Bolhão offers everything needed for a fuss-free getaway to Porto. It’s ideal for reaching all the city’s sights, including the Torre dos Clérigos, Mercado do Bolhão and Avenida dos Aliados. Inside, you'll find a bright and stylish space, where you can enjoy morning coffees on the balcony and homemade suppers together around the dining table. Though do keep in mind that one person will be sleeping on a sofa bed at full capacity and you'll need to climb an external staircase to reach the entrance of the home.

If you’re visiting Porto as a big group of friends and family, this modern pad covers all the bases. Central location? Check. Modern designs? Check. Balcony? Check. With en-suite bathrooms, getting ready in the morning is a breeze, but please note that the four guests sleeping on the sofa beds will need to share the bathrooms. We love the spacious and sociable kitchen, perfect for family dinners at home. However, with Porto's diverse restaurants on your doorstep, you'll likely prefer to dine out, especially with foodie havens like Rua Santa Catarina and Mercado do Bolhão just a short walk away.

The Porto Retreat

Set in the heart of downtown Porto, this apartment is close to Porto's main squares and landmarks, such as the Chapel of Souls. We love this home's private, sunny terrace here – the perfect spot for breakfast or cocktails in the evening. Inside, there's a well-equipped kitchen if you want to try your hand at creating some Portuguese cuisine, and there's a desk if you need to catch up on some work. This place will appeal to business professionals, couples and families. You may have to toss a coin to see who gets the bedroom that opens onto the terrace, though.

Set in the heart of Porto, this apartment provides easy access to the historical marvels dotting the city – and when you want to travel further afield, the closest metro is a mere ten-minute walk. So, while this fuss-free home may not be filled with luxurious finishes, it’s all about the location for us. It’s a comfortable space for four people, just bear in mind that the second bedroom is an interior room, so lacks natural light. That said, we think this makes it a perfect spot for a restful, undisturbed sleep.

Open these up to let the breeze drift through the space while you enjoy breakfast at the dining table, or perch by their Juliet balconies with a glass of Portuguese wine. 
 
The two bedrooms boast equally beautiful French doors that give way to views over the nearby Jardim Marques de Oliveira (a one-minute walk away), as well as inviting beds that wait to drift you into a peaceful night’s slumber. 
 
And when it comes to sightseeing, you’ve got plenty from which to choose within easy walking distance – the Igreja de Santo Ildefonso is a three-minute walk, Porto Cathedral is a ten-minute stroll and bustling, waterfront Cais da Ribeira is fifteen minutes away on foot.

In the heart of Porto, this contemporary apartment is a fuss-free base to call home. Our favourite feature – and yours too, we reckon – is the private balcony. Boasting views across the city, it's an excellent spot to savour a glass of port wine after sightseeing and watch the sun go down. Both bedrooms are roomy and bright, although the fifth guest will have to sleep on the sofa bed in the living area. Location-wise, you're not far from the shops on Rua de Santa Catarina or the buzz of downtown. Also nearby is Trindade Metro station for adventures further afield.
