Just along the quayside, you’ll find Porto’s fabulous wine museum, dedicated to the eponymous drink this city is famous for. Perhaps pick up a bottle or two and take them back to enjoy while you look out from the balcony. In the open kitchen and living room, a glass screen conveniently separates the spaces, creating a division that still allows natural light to flow through. Small porthole windows let in a little extra light and reveal the thick stone foundations of this old building. The decor is decidedly minimalist, with splashes of pop art on the walls. In the bedroom, cooling white walls and a generous queen-size bed guarantee a peaceful rest. A ten-minute walk along the river takes you to the wine bars of Ribeira and the beautiful sights of Porto’s UNESCO-protected historic centre.

When you're not spending your downtime relaxing in front of the TV, curl up on a wicker chair in the sunroom with a good book and a pitcher of sangria by your side. Come mealtime, try your hand at Portuguese cooking and gather the group in the sleek dining area to deliver the verdict. Prefer to leave it to the professionals? There's no shortage of top-tier restaurants in the area, from seafood joints to laid-back tapas bars.

You're barely a ten-minute walk from the heart of Porto, with Livraria Lello and the famous São Bento station just a leisurely stroll away. Wind your way down to Cais da Ribeira's buzzy bar scene to sample the local drinks specialities, from vino verde to the port that gives this city its name.

Situated right where the River Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean, this stylish apartment offers spectacular views and plenty of living space. Two balconies grant you the opportunity to relax in the sun – the one off the main bedroom is perfect for morning cups of coffee, while the downstairs balcony is ideal for cocktails as the evening draws to a close. Floor-to-ceiling windows show off the scenery all day long, a sleek kitchen makes rustling up meals a breeze and a cosy sofa is a perfect spot to kick back and relax after a busy day exploring. Our favourite room is the main bedroom. As well as the private balcony, it has all the bells and whistles you'd want – blackout blinds, built-in Bluetooth speakers and a lavish rainfall shower in the en-suite. 

When you're ready to explore, both the 1 and 18 trams run right past the home, so you'll have no problem getting to and from Porto's bustling city centre. That said, Foz do Douro isn't lacking in activities, either. Sprawl out on the miles of sandy beaches (Praia das Pastoras is a fifteen-minute walk away), grab dinner and drinks at one of the waterfront restaurants or just stroll along the river, admiring the many landmarks, lighthouses and sculptures representing Portugal's rich history.

Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. Come evening, there's a dazzling array of family-run eateries and hidden bars to discover, just wander down the charming backstreets and see for yourself.

When you're not soaking up the calming atmosphere of your plush pad, we recommend you take the ten-minute walk to Livraria Lello – trust us, this famous bookshop is a must-see. Surrounded by art houses, boutiques and charming cafe-bars, the Miragaia district is ideal for those looking to discover Porto's authentic, old-world side while being close to the city centre.

Located on a calm street in Miragaia, Rio & Vinho is all about lounging, even though you won't need to walk far before you're back in the vibrant embrace of the city. This ground-floor home is bright and elegant, each square inch used to its fullest potential to deliver a comfortable experience. There's no washing machine, which makes this home more suitable for a city break than a long stay, but it's still comfortable and a pleasure to spend time in. 

Rio & Vinho

Creative types will love the setting of this ultra-modern apartment set along Rua de Miguel Bombarda in the heart of the historic centre. One of the city's most iconic and artist streets, famed for its galleries, interiors stores, and urban street art, this is the place to be. 

And you won't have far to go when it's time to unearth more of the city's charms. Dive into one of the many authentic bakeries around here for those obligatory pastel de natas and coffee to go, then amble along to the beautiful Livraria Lello bookshop (a ten-minute walk away). Or, just a smidge further, the impressive Câmara Municipal do Porto (a fifteen-minute stroll) and the mighty Porto Cathedral (twenty minutes away on foot).

Back at home, the cool, marble floors, contemporary decor, and generous helping of natural daylight (thanks to those large windows), make this pristine apartment a joy to return home to.

Now, it's a charming spot for couples and solo travellers itching to be in the heart of this vibrant city. Porto Cathedral, Lapa Church, and the Douro River are all reachable on foot or from the tram stop only minutes away. This place does lack character inside, and the bedroom is in a mezzanine, which may not suit taller guests. That said, though you share the patio with neighbours on either side of you, the little bistro table still makes for a nice breakfast spot every morning.
