Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

Inside, it's a smart, functional space for your group to spread out, and there's a sofa bed for a fifth guest. The kitchen is compact yet fully equipped for home-cooked dinners, while the enclosed balcony is a nice place to toast the day's end. Just note that you'll need to climb stairs to reach the entrance of this home.

Located just a two-minute stroll from Rua das Flores and a seven-minute walk from Porto Cathedral, this apartment is perfect for sightseeing. If you want to explore the rest of the city, São Bento train station is five minutes on foot. Just remember to bring you're walking shoes, as this home is on a bit of a hill and the apartment is on the first floor, with no lift (there are two flights of stairs to reach the door). But you are rewarded with views of the city's cathedral once you've arrived – take in the vistas from the private balcony. Inside, we love the vaulted ceilings, which add character to this modern home.

Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

From its enviable position in the centre of Porto, this stylish yet functional apartment is an excellent choice for families and groups of friends alike. The open-plan living space is perfectly proportioned, with enough room for entertaining your loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.

There are several things we love about this home. First of all, it's housed in a gorgeous refurbished 19th-century building that used to belong to a commander from the 1800s. The second reason is for its Harry Potter connections – the house opposite is where JK Rowling lived during her time in Porto. It’s said she wrote the first three chapters of the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone there. 

Third, but by no means least, is the sunny, large courtyard garden with its rocking chair, barbecue, sofa and dining table, which is the real highlight of this home. It's filled with roses, geraniums, and a lemon tree – it's the perfect place to gather with your family or friends. 

Inside, there are plenty of character features such as exposed stone walls, beams, shutters and traditional tiles. Whip up some bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (cod casserole) in the kitchen and enjoy it at the huge wooden table.

Out and about, there's plenty to see in this enchanting city. Jardim de São Lázaro, Lisbon's oldest municipal park, is a four-minute stroll, while the Via Catarina Shopping Mall is eight minutes on foot. It's around the same distance to Bolhão Market or head to Batalha Square, with its cafes and theatres, a ten-minute saunter from this fantastic home.

Make yourself at home in this stunning top-floor apartment situated in the heart of Porto. The first thing you'll notice is that your hosts have taken great care to preserve the original nineteenth-century features of this home while adding sophistication and style into the mix. Alongside stone walls, exposed timber frames and original wood flooring, you'll encounter bold printed wallpaper, mid-century furniture and plenty of gold accents to add a touch of luxury.

With its elevated top-floor position and sky-high vaulted ceiling, every corner of this city-centre flat is illuminated by natural light – a real rarity in these older buildings. We loved the covered balcony, where we could imagine nothing better than sitting in the wicker throne, a glass of local wine in hand, as the sound of live music drifts up from the streets below. Despite the central location, the apartment is calm and tranquil, making it perfect for families with children – especially when you add the second bunk room into the mix.

Down at street level, the neighbourhood has everything you could need, including traditional restaurants, cool cafes and well-stocked supermarkets. Meanwhile, Porto's main sights are within easy walking distance, with the riverfront promenade at Cais da Ribeira and the Neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa both a twenty-minute walk away.


Lofty Expectations

This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Whether you’re sat on the sofa or enjoying a coffee at the dining table, you’ll have sweeping views of the water and the city. The windows’ second benefit is the sheer amount of light the living space gets, bathing the tasteful furniture in the warm sun. We could spend hours with a book in the armchair, taking in the sea air as the day grows to a peak. But of course, this central location leaves much to be explored. You can wander along the riverfront’s picturesque fishing neighbourhoods, hopping on the 1930s tram that runs to Foz. Or, board on a boat that will take you to the famous terraced Douro vineyards to sample Vinho Verde and Port. You’ll be walking distance from beautiful historic buildings, located in one of the quietest streets of Ribeira, and only a thirteen-minute walk from São Bento Railway Station – which will connect you all over the city.
