Ribeira is one of Porto’s most charming and typical neighbourhoods, and this apartment blends right in. Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

Situated in the heart of Downtown Porto, this apartment places you within easy walking distance of the city's top highlights. Visit the Church of Saint Ildefonso, sample local produce at the Mercado do Bolhão, or head to the Douro River for a boat trip. Boasting pastoral architectural features in combination with minimalist interiors, we were not only impressed with the sleek look but more importantly, the comfort provided. On top of that, you’ll be staying in a fabulous location, especially if you’ve never been to Porto before. You're right by the city centre and close to the most important tourist attractions. Of course, it wouldn't be Porto if wonderful cafes didn't also line the streets.

Situated in the charming Ribeiro neighbourhood, a three-minute walk from the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa and within touching distance of old-school restaurants serving traditional Portuguese fare, this modern and bright apartment is a great base for exploring all that Porto has to offer.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

From its enviable position in the centre of Porto, this stylish yet functional apartment is an excellent choice for families and groups of friends alike. The open-plan living space is perfectly proportioned, with enough room for entertaining your loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.

Found in one of the oldest residential buildings in Porto, this apartment might not look 200 years old thanks to modernisation, but it remains historic. Now updated to house families itching to explore this UNESCO World Heritage City, it's comfortable – though the two bedrooms with the sloped ceilings might be better for kids – and bright with a fantastic location. Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield.

This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Whether you’re sat on the sofa or enjoying a coffee at the dining table, you’ll have sweeping views of the water and the city. We could spend hours with a book in the armchair, taking in the sea air as the day grows to a peak. But of course, this central location leaves much to be explored. We love the views over the River Douro and Porto from this home's terrace. You can enjoy the vistas from inside too, where you'll also find stylish interiors with wooden floors, whitewashed beams and a log burner. This home is situated right in the hub of the Port industry. There are plenty of wine cellars offering tours and tastings, such as Fonseca Port Wine Cellars and Caves Cálem within a short walk. For a bird's eye view of the city, head to the nearby Gaia Cable Car, or the stunning Porto Cathedral is a quick drive away.

Petite and pared-back, this apartment is ideally placed for sightseeing. You'll find it nestled between the shops and markets on a pedestrianised street in the heart of the city. Exploring on foot is a breeze here – or, if you'd prefer to take it easy, there are metro stops and trams nearby. Back home, the living area isn't the biggest, and the compact kitchen makes cooking anything more than a snack a challenge. The apartment is simple, allowing the floor-to-ceiling windows to draw the eye. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the open-plan living and dining space, which isn’t the most private.

Sitting just a short walk from Alfândega and the Douro River, this duplex apartment is a convenient base for a group of friends or family. You’ll need to climb some stairs to reach this second-floor apartment, so keep that in mind. The third bedroom lacks some privacy, though the sliding doors allow you to partition it off from the living area. And while the dining room doesn’t accommodate all six guests, you'll find plenty of casual eateries, bars and cafes on your doorstep. Location-wise, Porto’s iconic sights, including Bolsa Palace, the Miradouro da Vitória and Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória are within easy reach.

The kitchen facilities are limited, but you’ll have your pick of Porto’s best restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

You're well-positioned to visit many of the top sights in the city, with Clérigos Tower and Aliados Avenue a five-minute walk away, and the Livraria Lello Bookstore just around the corner – rumour has it this literary wonderland inspired the Hogwarts library. There are several things we love about this home. First of all, it's housed in a gorgeous refurbished 19th-century building that used to belong to a commander from the 1800s. The second reason is for its Harry Potter connections – the house opposite is where JK Rowling lived during her time in Porto. It’s said she wrote the first three chapters of the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone there. 

Third, but by no means least, is the sunny, large courtyard garden with its rocking chair, barbecue, sofa and dining table, which is the real highlight of this home. It's filled with roses, geraniums, and a lemon tree – it's the perfect place to gather with your family or friends. 

Inside, there are plenty of character features such as exposed stone walls, beams, shutters and traditional tiles. Whip up some bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (cod casserole) in the kitchen and enjoy it at the huge wooden table.

Out and about, there's plenty to see in this enchanting city.
