Located only a few minutes from the Clérigos Tower, On The Lookout's rooftop terrace offers a rival view to the Cathedral and downtown architecture. The insides of this home are equally impressive, with a welcoming communal area all dressed in wood. The rustic touches are added in the form of forest animal prints, which adds to the warm ambiance in every room. Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Hardwood floors lead from the living room, to the compact kitchen in an alcove and through to the bright bedroom where the exposed stone and big sash window motif continues.

Guests rave about the location of this Porto apartment, and it’s easy to see why. On top of that, you’ll be staying in a fabulous location, especially if you’ve never been to Porto before. You're right by the city centre and close to the most important tourist attractions. Of course, it wouldn't be Porto if wonderful cafes didn't also line the streets.

We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

This home is centrally located, so you’ll be able to easily explore on foot and by using the metro. Location doesn’t get much better than this in Porto – on a charming shopping street just a couple of streets away from Sao Bento train station. If you love books, then we’d recommend a browse around Livraria Lello, said to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – it’s well worth the eleven-minute stroll.

Back at this home, take in the views over the city from your private balcony with a glass of rich Port or a cup of coffee. Alternatively, relax on the green mid-century style sofa, next to the potted palm in the light-filled open plan living space. We love that the bedroom opens out onto the balcony too – perfect for breakfast in the morning.

Located on one of Porto’s liveliest streets, this studio apartment is very close to the iconic Ribeira which can be reached on foot within seven minutes. A picturesque part of the city, in the heart of the old town, Ribeira is a riverside spot overlooking the Douro River where you can visit Praça da Ribeira square which is lined with colourful 18th-century townhouses, and visit Bolsa Palace, a neoclassical landmark with ornate interiors which is a short three-minute walk from your door. At dinner time, weave your way through the cobbled streets of Ribeira where you will find plenty of small bars and eateries – to taste classic Portuguese fare such as grilled sardines.

With high ceilings and stripped-back woodwork to its trio of Juliet balcony windows, it's full of character, and its recent refurbishment has added a big helping of modern styling and clever design. 

There's a bespoke kitchen packed with everything you'll need for cooking at home, along with a comfy sofa, a little dining area and even a desk. And while this is a studio, the addition of a sleeping platform up a few steps divides the space neatly – creating storage beneath. Step out of bed and straight into your in-room rainfall shower, before making a cup of coffee and opening up the shutters to gaze across at the park.

With wine bars and cafes on your street, you won't have to go far for a true taste of Porto, and the riverside is just a ten-minute walk.

This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Sometimes a home makes such an impression on us that we’re willing to look past a few flaws, simply because the rest is worth it. Ruby Port is one such home. Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. Come evening, there's a dazzling array of family-run eateries and hidden bars to discover, just wander down the charming backstreets and see for yourself.

Now updated to house families itching to explore this UNESCO World Heritage City, it's comfortable – though the two bedrooms with the sloped ceilings might be better for kids – and bright with a fantastic location. Walk to Porto Cathedral and other landmarks in minutes, buy fresh produce from the Bolhão market only a short stroll away, and hop on the trams to find points of interest further afield.

Upon seeing the minimalist kitchen, wooden floors and white walls upon entrance, you could be forgiven for thinking that this home was smart, if lacking in a little personality. However, closer inspection reveals that's far from the case. Out in the two-tiered terrace bordered by a large stone wall — itself a lovely spot to enjoy Porto's magnificent climate — there's a mural taking up one wall that was painted by one of the city's most prolific graffiti artists, Costah. Back inside, there's another collection of more amateur artwork pinned to the wall in the living space, as well as a fetching floral feature wall. All of these personal touches work together to create an apartment that feels both professional and charming. If that's not enough to convince you to stay, the local neighbourhood of Cedofeita is sure to sway you. To the south lie some of the city's most impressive churches, including the Cathedral only fifteen minutes' walk away, while there are plenty of art galleries to wander around in the area around Rua Miguel Bombarda, only eight minutes away on foot.

From its enviable position in the centre of Porto, this stylish yet functional apartment is an excellent choice for families and groups of friends alike. The open-plan living space is perfectly proportioned, with enough room for entertaining your loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. If you’re visiting Porto as a big group of friends and family, this modern pad covers all the bases. Central location? Check. Modern designs? Check. Balcony? Check. With en-suite bathrooms, getting ready in the morning is a breeze, but please note that the four guests sleeping on the sofa beds will need to share the bathrooms. We love the spacious and sociable kitchen, perfect for family dinners at home. However, with Porto's diverse restaurants on your doorstep, you'll likely prefer to dine out, especially with foodie havens like Rua Santa Catarina and Mercado do Bolhão just a short walk away.

The Porto Retreat

Set in the heart of Porto, this apartment provides easy access to the historical marvels dotting the city – and when you want to travel further afield, the closest metro is a mere ten-minute walk. So, while this fuss-free home may not be filled with luxurious finishes, it’s all about the location for us. It’s a comfortable space for four people, just bear in mind that the second bedroom is an interior room, so lacks natural light. That said, we think this makes it a perfect spot for a restful, undisturbed sleep.

Inside, while this apartment is studio living, we think it’s expertly formed and feels surprisingly spacious. The designers knew what they were doing here, with earthy textures, warm wooden hues, and pops of botanical greens fusing beautifully.

Over in the made-for-action kitchen, there’s everything you could need to rustle up a bite to eat. And don’t get us started on the bedroom area with charming views over the terrace to the lofty palm trees and blue skies beyond.

Sunny mornings call for breakfast and freshly brewed coffees on the veranda as you hatch plans for the day ahead. And you won’t have far to go when it’s time to get out and about. 

Lose yourself in the city’s alley-woven historic heart brimming with boutiques, including the neo-Gothic, Livraria Lello (twelve minutes on foot) – the bookshop was a source of inspiration for the Harry Potter books, we hear. Grab a sunny spot for a bite to eat at one of the many Petiscarias (that’s Portuguese-style tapas bars to us). Then enjoy a post-lunch hazy walk along the banks of the Douro River (nineteen minutes on foot). Located just a two-minute stroll from Rua das Flores and a seven-minute walk from Porto Cathedral, this apartment is perfect for sightseeing. If you want to explore the rest of the city, São Bento train station is five minutes on foot. Just remember to bring you're walking shoes, as this home is on a bit of a hill and the apartment is on the first floor, with no lift (there are two flights of stairs to reach the door). But you are rewarded with views of the city's cathedral once you've arrived – take in the vistas from the private balcony. Inside, we love the vaulted ceilings, which add character to this modern home.

Cedofeita is slightly off the beaten track, but still a part of Porto's busy city centre. After you pass the neighbourhood's cosy cafes and art galleries, you'll quickly get to the riverside and other central sights. Fernando & Amalia is a simple, immaculate home with ample natural light and high-quality furniture. The building faces a busy street, which is great if you want to grab a taxi – but the communal areas are a little noisy with the windows open. We did, however, like the Porto-inspired art prints in the living room.

Located only a few minutes away from Bolhão Market, Sunglasses is surrounded by cosy cafes, art galleries, and shops. This is a bright home with a pleasant atmosphere and plenty of spots to hang out and relax. The design is heavily focused on functionality rather than aesthetics, but the simplicity works well with the open layout. From here, you'll have easy access to the central sights and the walk down to the riverside is filled with great bars and restaurants where you can refuel.

This gorgeous studio apartment offers you the chance to immerse yourself in Porto's beating heart. Located in the Clérigos area, between Jardim da Cordoaria and Jardim Municipal do Horto das Virtudes, it's ideal for guests who want to combine city living with easy access to some green space. 

The home may be petite, but the clever layout really maximises the space available. Step inside, and you'll find a sleek kitchen where you can whip up your favourite dishes to enjoy at the cute round table as sunlight streams in through the window. If you need to catch up on work, or are feeling inspired to start writing your novel, there's a desk space where you can use your laptop. And, when evening rolls around, you only need to pad up a couple of steps to curl up in the comfy bed for a great night's sleep.
