Tucked behind a Georgian–listed house overlooking the historic harbour of Charlestown, this is a wonderful setting to experience the atmospheric charm of Cornwall. And with its elegant styling and traditional features, there’s a quiet joy to this home that makes you want to settle in and stay.

Utterly enchanting were our thoughts when we first saw this beautifully renovated Grade II listed Charlestown home – this place is very special indeed. Relax in the lovely, secluded south-facing garden or in the glass-covered courtyard filled with scented jasmine and verdant tree ferns – it's the perfect spot for a glass of Cornish fizz in the evening while doing a bit of star gazing. 

We love the bedroom, which is open to the rafters, as well as its cast-iron freestanding bathtub. On stormy nights, you may even hear the sound of the waves – what a wonderful way to fall asleep.

The following day, help yourself to tea or coffee, and feast on scrumptious Cornish cinnamon buns, provided courtesy of your hosts Antonia and David. They can also deliver oven-ready meals for lunch or dinner. 

If you prefer to eat out, there are an array of tempting restaurants on your doorstep to choose from. Or pop to the deli and take a picnic down to Charlestown Beach, a one-minute stroll away. Other beaches to try in the area include the golden sands of Porthpean, a five-minute drive. For history lovers, the Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre is a one-minute saunter, or keen hikers can have a walk around Gribben Head, a fifteen-minute drive from this home.

Charlestown is a UNESCO world heritage village, home to glorious Georgian architecture and the Shipwreck Treasure Museum. Along the quay there is a restaurant, pub, deli and antiques shop, or if you prefer, your host can arrange home cooked meals to be delivered to you at the cottage. On warm summer days, the two beaches on either side of the quay are great swimming spots, and the surfing beach of Watergate Bay can be reached in twenty minutes by car.

Set out on the Hall Walk trail or take it easy and relax on Readymoney Cove Beach, less than a fifteen-minute saunter from your doorstep.

Just a stone's throw away from the shops, restaurants and waterfront of Fowley, this central apartment offers a convenient spot to a couple, solo traveller or pair of friends (plus one small pooch) looking to experience Cornwall. While the location is everything here, the apartment's modern home comforts make it all the more special. From the comfy interiors of the living to the luxurious bathtub and snuggly bed – the space makes chilling out between days on the beach easy as can be. If you arrive by car, do note that there is no private parking available on-site – the local public car parks of Fowey are just a five-minute stroll away. Or, take advantage of the train route to Par and then the 20-minute bus to Fowey, if you'd prefer to leave the car at home.

Out and about, there are shops, cafes and two village pubs a short stroll away. The harbourside and glorious coastal walks are right on your doorstep. Or do some beachcombing – the seashore is 400 metres away. Polruan Castle, on the other hand, is a five-minute stroll. If you want to explore the town of Fowey opposite, the Polruan Ferry takes you across the estuary in under fifteen minutes, or a ten-minute drive will take you to the Bodinnick Car Ferry.

This beautiful home– located on the River Fowey – is a charmingly renovated fisherman’s cottage that originally dates back to 1620. You will be able to enjoy stunning views from every room in this home. However, the waterfront patio here is truly the home’s crowning glory. Enjoy leisurely breakfasts at the picnic table overlooking the harbour and watch the boats pass by or look out across the water to the greenery of the National Trust woodlands.  

After exploring the multi-coloured homes perched on the hillsides of Fowey, leading down to the sea, head home for an evening perched in the living room’s window seat overlooking the river. Or, why not enjoy an alfresco nightcap on the patio to admire the last of the watery vistas before night descends? 

Fisherman's Fancy

This old fisherman's cottage is set in one of Cornwall's quieter villages, Gorran Haven, and is a little slice of tranquillity for families and friends. Less than five minutes from the beach, the home has views over the sea, including from the south-facing patio, which is perfect for unwinding with a glass of wine at sunset. There's an electric AGA in the country-style kitchen for preparing family feasts, while the cosy lounge has a rustic log-burner if you need to warm up after a dip in the ocean. Kids will love the snug upstairs, with their very own TV and sofa. The village centre is a short stroll away, as are two beaches – Little Perhaver beach avoids some of the crowds found on neighbouring Great Perhaver and is a two-minute walk from your front door. The South West Coast Path also runs close by this spot and can be followed along clifftops until you reach the charming village of Portmellon.

Take a seat on the front terrace of this charming cottage and take in the glimpses of the estuary this chic town is famous for. There’s a patio off the garden room too, ideal for reading your holiday book and this place is perfect as an all-year-round getaway as there’s an open fire for those colder months. Just a couple of things to note with this home – firstly, the stairs to the second floor are a bit on the narrow side. Secondly, there’s no parking and the road outside is steep, however, one reserved parking space is provided, a ten-minute walk away. You’ll definitely need to bring your walking shoes.

Perched high on a hill overlooking Portmellon's sheltered, sandy cove, every element of this gorgeous three-bedroom home is designed to make the most of its privileged position, no matter the time of year. From breathtaking sea views from practically every window and a light-filled conservatory to a scenic summerhouse seating area and a separate terrace with a spacious outdoor dining table.

The split-level home is set mostly over the first floor, with a spacious lounge and dining room looking out over the ocean. Two of the bedrooms share this level, with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors leading out to a Juliet balcony in the main bedroom. Elsewhere, the fully equipped kitchen contains everything you could need for a self-catered stay.

We’re passionate about coastal escapes, so as far as we’re concerned, a trip to Cornwall’s beautiful Fowey is always a good idea. The house is spread over three floors, with a ground-floor apartment in addition to a roomy second- and third-floor home – this is the perfect base for two separate families travelling together. You can gather together as much as you like, but when you need your own space it’s all there for you. We think the ground floor would be perfect for grandparents, while parents and little ones can spread out upstairs.

Readymoney Cove is just ten minutes away on foot, so make sure you bring your bucket and spade. Paddle in the water, skim stones or tuck into piping hot fish and chips on the sand. Sip local cider and plan the rest of your stay – will you set off on a boat trip from Newquay Harbour, or would you rather visit the zoo?
