What's not to love about this quirky cottage? Bright and modern, we love how inviting the space feels, with cushy sofas you want to sink into, a sunny deck for alfresco cocktails in the sun and a lime green kitchen fit for rustling up coastal-inspired cuisine. All the furniture here is handmade using reclaimed materials, including a bed made from sea-breakers. And there are plenty more beachy bits and bobs scattered about – from the retro seaside posters in the living room and the beach hut-inspired wardrobes to the buoy mirror in the bathroom. Speaking of, the lush roll-top bath is a dream after a long coastal walk – all that's missing is a bath bomb, a glass of wine and a good book. 

With Normans Bay beach just metres away, chances are you'll spend most of your time by the water or walking along the pebbled shores. The only pub in town is a fifteen-minute walk, but Eastbourne, Pevensey and Bexhill aren't far – the farthest a twenty-minute drive – if you'd like to explore more of the Sussex Coast. But we think there's a sleepy charm to Normans Bay that makes it perfect for families wanting a more laid-back getaway.

The ground floor houses a mix of stylish mid-century furniture and older antique pieces that sit seamlessly alongside one another in the living and dining areas. And while the colour palette is mainly restrained and sophisticated, the vibrant green kitchen adds a welcome pop of colour. 

Double doors lead directly into the garden, where you'll find a couple of sun loungers on the patio and a romantic swing chair on the lawn. An outdoor dining set sits in the dappled shade of an ancient oak tree, with a barbecue ready and waiting for those seemingly endless summer evenings sat outside drinking and dining until well after the sun has set.

We could tell this exquisite home, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, is owned by an interior photographer – it's picture-perfect. We love the attention to detail that has gone into this place. It's been designed with entertainment in mind – relax in the hot tub in the secluded south-facing garden with a glass of Sussex fizz, dine under the shade of the vine-covered pergola or sunbathe on the loungers. Play croquet on the extensive lawn or simply spot the wildlife – if you're lucky, you may see rabbits, badgers and the occasional deer. 

Inside, there are even more options to keep your family or friends occupied. Listen to some music on the Bluetooth sound system, channel your inner Mozart at the electric piano or bang out some rhythms on the drum kit. If music isn't your thing, watch a movie in the cinema room or play some table tennis. The gardens surrounding this one-bedroom bespoke oak barn conversion are beautiful. There are several terraces, including one with a pergola flanked by scented lavenders, perfect for alfresco dining, and another with a hot tub. One thing to note, though, is that a public footpath runs through the paddock next to the garden. Inside, there’s a wood burning stove and there’s a rolltop bath in the bedroom’s en-suite. Don’t be fooled by the pictures of the spiral staircase, this home is all on one level (the first floor is only for the owners’ use). When you feel like exploring, the village of Ripe is a short walk away, and the market town of Lewes is nearby too.

It's not something you see every day – especially not in a seaside village in East Sussex – but that's precisely why we love it. But the fun doesn't end there – a huge collection of DVDs, books and CDs will keep the boredom at bay, there’s a desk for remote working and the compact yet well-equipped kitchen is ideal for rustling up tasty breakfasts to start the day off right. Our favourite spot is the chaise lounge in the bedroom – sprawl out with a glass of wine, a good book and admire the views over St Leonards.

Nestled in a Victorian conversion in the creative quarter, you'll be well-placed for exploring the village on foot. Everything is within walking distance – from the lively cafes and shops on Kings Road (just around the corner) to the sprawling beach (a mere five-minute stroll) and train station (walkable in two minutes). Catch a flick at the independent cinema, grab a bite to eat at the numerous restaurants on the waterfront or wander along the seaside promenade and visit Hastings, a fifteen-minute walk away.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

The modern kitchen is well stocked for cooking up homely meals, or on warm days fire up the barbecue and enjoy lunch alfresco at the wooden table outside. Look out the kitchen window and you might spot Nellie and Maggie, the shaggy Shetland ponies whose paddock is twenty feet away. Feel free to give them a carrot or two! 

The cottage is on a farm run by your hosts. You are surrounded by the great outdoors here, and you’ll have direct access to footpaths and bridleways which take you through the farm and out into the picturesque countryside beyond. As you walk out, stop by the Stud house, where you can say hello to the native ponies in their stable. The village of Billingshurst is a four-minute drive away, where you’ll find a supermarket and some local country pubs. Pay a visit to the Nyetimber vineyard, a fourteen-minute drive away, and pick up some of their excellent sparkling wine. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly back at home as the sun sets over the fields.

Driving up to this home, you’ll no doubt feel as though you’re entering your own version of Downton Abbey or Bridgerton – and once you step inside, it only gets grander. Wooden panel walls, classic fireplaces, beautiful chandeliers, and four poster beds add to the stately comfort of this quintessentially English manor house. Spend the morning nursing a cup of tea with breakfast, before retiring to one of the many rooms to find the most comfortable sofa – of which there are many – so you can spend a few hours getting lost in a Jane Austen novel. There's getting back to nature and then there's staying in this stunning 18th-century barn conversion, set on 350 acres of nature reserve. The house's location sounds like the start of a poem: next to a wildflower meadow and on the edge of a stream – beautiful. With wetlands and woodlands all around, birdwatching is easy through the double-height windows in the living area or while sipping a drink on the patio. Make the most of the setting on one of the owner’s wildlife safari tours, or just admire the passing Konik ponies, and keep your eyes peeled for animals and insects. There's just as much to explore within the house. Oak beams run across the ceiling of every room, giving the space a cute, country feel. On cold days, there's a log-burner or roll-top bath for warming up. Dinner can be cooked in the kitchen, with a large wooden table for big feasts, or fire up the BBQ outside.

Hastings and Rye are both nearby, and easy to reach if you’re after a day trip. The cottage itself on a working farm, which has plenty to see, from the chickens to the orchards, and even the occasional pig. The garden is a lovely place to spend afternoons, and there’s a hot tub available, as well as a hammock slung between the trees. Then, as the night draws in, it’s hard to look past the wood-burning stove, which makes for a spectacularly cosy setting.

Inside, your hosts have done a fabulous job restoring this home whilst maintaining its original integrity. We love the exposed old brick walls and the lofty vaulted ceilings in the huge open-plan living space. When the Sussex evenings turn chilly, light the log burner, cosy up on the feather-filled sofa and enjoy a movie on the 65 inch Smart TV. Our absolute favourite feature here, though, is the sumptuous bedroom with its dramatic, dark panelled walls and super comfy natural linens.

Ideally located and close to the vibrant towns and picturesque villages of Sussex and the South Downs, this is the perfect rural retreat for those wanting to explore all that the area has to offer.

The Long Barn

Beachfront living is hard to beat, and that's exactly what this fuss-free apartment offers. Set on Sandgate Esplanade, the shingled beach is just across the street. It's on the top three floors of a Victorian building dating back 150 years, so expect to climb quite a few stairs. You'll find it's worth the effort, though, as the views from up here are superb. The bay window offers sweeping sea panoramas, including a glimpse of France in the distance. It's not the most modern home – the communal hallway is especially dated – but it works well for families keen to be seconds from the sea.

Set in the home's grounds, the abbey dates from 1285 and it's quite a sight to wake up to each morning.

Inside, the home is beautifully detailed, with character features like a meticulously restored original fireplace with log burner in the living room, Gothic plasterwork, ornate cornice to the high ceilings and stone mullion windows. Decorated in a classical country residence style, there's a Chesterfield to lounge upon, a vintage dining table and chairs, and an antique writing table. But it also boasts some tasteful modern touches, like the emperor-size bed with a cashmere and wool mattress and 800 thread count linen in the master bedroom, the stylish marble bathrooms, the cosy double bed and built-in bunkbed in the second bedroom. Comfortable and warm, it's a real home from home, with a well kitted-out kitchen (including a basket of local produce) and unbeatable views framed by tall windows.

With its own private and fully enclosed garden and a wood-fired hot tub, you'll no doubt be spending much of your time outdoors, and there's a table and chairs plus a barbecue for meals alfresco. But the village pub is only a short walk away and the charming medieval town of Rye, bursting with pubs, shops and restaurants, is just a few minutes by car. Explore Winchelsea’s cellar tours, 13th century church with stunning stained glass windows, farm shop, pub, and vineyard wine tours hosted by a neighbour of the home. Keen walkers can hike across the marshes, while beach lovers will be in their element – Winchelsea beach is just down the road, while both Rye Harbour and the famous dunes of Camber Sands are a short drive. You're also only two hours from London.

Escape to the countryside with this romantic retreat, surrounded by olive trees, and beautiful rural views. This stylish and cosy cabin-style property, elevated on stilts, has a tree-house vibe (you'll need to love wood though). We adore the landscaped deck overlooking the gorgeous gardens and meadows and there’s an eco-wood-fired hot tub to relax in after a long country walk (don’t forget your walking boots). If you’re thinking, well I’d love to stay here but there are more of us – you’re in luck as the host has two other properties sleeping up to ten more guests. Out and about, the historic town of Lewes and the Sussex coast are both a twenty to thirty-minute drive away.

Just a five-minute walk from the picture-perfect village of Shere in the Surrey Hills, this place is a much-loved family home. Set in five acres of private grounds, with views across the rolling hills, it's bound to be a hit with lovers of the great outdoors, with excellent hiking and cycling routes from your door. A substantial period house approached via a sweeping drive, it's a slice of rural living on a grand scale – there's everything from an outdoor pool and tennis court to a vast vegetable garden and free-range hens. And children will love the sunken trampoline.

Inside, elegant styling, country furnishings and eclectic artwork blend to create a lived-in, warm feeling. A beautiful living room and snug both feature working fireplaces and the kitchen is extremely well-equipped when it comes to cooking for a large group (yes, there really are two dishwashers). You can even cook alfresco meals down at the pool house. But its most impressive room has to be the orangery, where a long dining table is the star of the show, against a backdrop of vast windows and doors with spectacular views.

Perfect for special gatherings, and with a new yoga studio, it's also a flexible space with an additional cottage and a garden studio that can be rented alongside it. And when you're not entertaining, the village, with its tea shop and pretty church, is just a stroll through the fields – one of the most scenic villages in England, you may recognise it as one of the locations where the movie The Holiday was filmed.
