Florence's most famous landmarks are mere steps from this apartment. Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Signoria, Florence Cathedral, and plenty more are less than ten minutes away on foot. Of course, being in the heart of the city has its quirks. Noise is likely here, and a climb to the third floor is required as the building doesn't have a lift. But once inside, we reckon you'll appreciate the traditional features on offer. The open-plan living area has just enough room to decompress after sightseeing as well as a compact (yet well-appointed) kitchen to rustle up Italian dishes. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, though – fine for short stays, but may not suit everyone.

Around the corner from Ponte Santa Trinità, Chimney Sweep is in a great location for seeing the centre of Florence. Despite being set over three levels, it’s quite small, but while the kitchen is a little underwhelming, the rest of the house feels pleasantly cosy. Unusually, one of our favourite parts of the home is the single room. What used to be an enormous stone fireplace has been converted into a writing nook, and it feels like a wonderful place to set up shop with a laptop and get to work on your novel.

With its tiled floors, antique furniture and stone walls, there's plenty of rustic charm on offer. But head on up the spiral staircase to the top-floor lounge, and you'll be blown away by the panoramic views. From up here, the entire city is stretched out before you. Admire the iconic red dome of the Duomo, watch the sunset over the Palazzo Vecchio and spot the spires of the Basilica of Santa Croce. Apex has so many things going for it that focussing on the specifics seems unfair. Needless to say that everything in the flat is of the highest quality, whether that’s the carrara marble in the bathroom, or the four-poster bed. In fact it’s the bedrooms (or three of them anyway) that make the biggest impression. They’re what you might imagine from a seventeenth-century noble mansion, and while obviously all these things are personal preferences, they make for a seriously good night’s sleep.

What an outstanding location this fabulous home has in Florence – it's less than a minute's stroll from the medieval splendour of Ponte Vecchio. The magnificent Palazzo Pitti, one of Florence's largest architectural monuments, is a five-minute stroll away – a good time to visit is at sunset when the façade turns a pink hue. It's the same walking distance to the Uffizi Gallery in the historical centre of Florence. The wonderful markets at Piazza Santo Spirito, on the other hand, are a six-minute saunter – perfect for a morning browse. Of course, as you'd expect from one of the city's most desirable areas – there are plenty of fine restaurants right on your doorstep, as well as a couple of artisan wine shops. Enjoy some cantuccini dipped in vin santo on the gorgeous, large balcony or create some tagliatelle funghi porcini e tartufo from local truffles for dinner in the open-plan kitchen and enjoy at your dining table. We love the vintage prints that adorn the walls here, as well as the French doors with their views over the neighbourhood. After a busy day of sightseeing, have a soak in the bathtub and then get some rest in the serene bedrooms before another day in beguiling Florence.

Not many people have the privilege of saying that their local church dates back to the late thirteenth century and is one of the largest such buildings in the world, but you can include yourself in this number if you stay in this apartment five minutes' walk from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

Aside from the illustrious neighbour, there's plenty to like about this home on the first floor of a historic building. The high ceilings, tall windows and burnt yellow walls lean into the city's architectural heritage, while the minimalist kitchen and sleek bathrooms belong well and truly in the 21st century. The flat is surrounded by Renaissance architecture, with both the Duomo and the Palazzo Vecchio a few minutes away on foot. The structure itself also fits into the category, and the wooden beams are a nice touch that keep the interior grounded in the area’s history, even if the contrast with the art is striking.

We adore this chic home's stunning terrace with its wonderful view of the Duomo di Firenze (Florence Cathedral) and many of the city's famous sights. We also really love the living room style – its simplicity defined, with pale colours and a clear influence from Scandinavian design. Located in the heart of Florence's luxury shopping district, Via dè Tornabuoni is just a three-minute stroll away. This neighbourhood is also known for its array of Florentine restaurants, cafes and bakeries. A romantic retreat for two at the top of a traditional building, it's bright, neatly laid out and super comfortable. In the summer months, all you'll need is the small but practical kitchen, the outdoor dining table – shaded from the sun with an awning – and the squashy outdoor corner sofa. Grab some fresh bread, olives and a glass of something chilled, and watch the sun go down over this historic city.

Not many homes let you go sightseeing without even leaving the living room, but this apartment in the heart of Florence does – throw open the window and you're greeted by the sight of the 14th-century Orsanmichele's church. Your living quarters aren't quite as old, but there are a couple of more traditional features – including, look up, the patterned ceiling. A recent renovation has tastefully incorporated more contemporary aspects into the interior design and 21st-century travellers will find nothing to sniff at, especially when the fantastic central location is taken into consideration.

A Sprinkle of Magic

A simple, unflashy, but generally pleasant loft, Rush Hour’s main draw is its proximity to the Duomo. It also has a set of French windows that light up the entire place (it’s all a single room, with the exception of the bathroom). There are a couple of sister flats in the same building, still managed by Valerio, so while the flat itself can’t really accommodate more than two people, larger groups could book more than one place at a time.
