Of course, being in the heart of the city has its quirks. Noise is likely here, and a climb to the third floor is required as the building doesn't have a lift. But once inside, we reckon you'll appreciate the traditional features on offer. The open-plan living area has just enough room to decompress after sightseeing as well as a compact (yet well-appointed) kitchen to rustle up Italian dishes. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, though – fine for short stays, but may not suit everyone.

What an outstanding location this fabulous home has in Florence – it's less than a minute's stroll from the medieval splendour of Ponte Vecchio. The magnificent Palazzo Pitti, one of Florence's largest architectural monuments, is a five-minute stroll away – a good time to visit is at sunset when the façade turns a pink hue. It's the same walking distance to the Uffizi Gallery in the historical centre of Florence. The wonderful markets at Piazza Santo Spirito, on the other hand, are a six-minute saunter – perfect for a morning browse. Of course, as you'd expect from one of the city's most desirable areas – there are plenty of fine restaurants right on your doorstep, as well as a couple of artisan wine shops. Enjoy some cantuccini dipped in vin santo on the gorgeous, large balcony or create some tagliatelle funghi porcini e tartufo from local truffles for dinner in the open-plan kitchen and enjoy at your dining table. We love the vintage prints that adorn the walls here, as well as the French doors with their views over the neighbourhood. After a busy day of sightseeing, have a soak in the bathtub and then get some rest in the serene bedrooms before another day in beguiling Florence.

Pietraforte combines an unbeatably central location with an atmosphere of calm. We blame the vertical garden that adds even lots of light and a touch of green – we didn't feel like we were only a few minutes away from Palazzo Vecchio. There are lots of hangout spots in this home, which makes it a good choice for a group of friends who need autonomy, but we can easily see a family with older children enjoying the space as well. The master bedroom on the mezzanine needs an honorary mention for sleek design, especially the chic self-standing bath.
