It’s worth noting, at full occupancy, the last two guests will have to make do with a single bed and pull-out bed in the cosy fourth bedroom. Located on inside a restored historical building near Piazza della Republica, Pietra Serena is a great stay if you want the city's museums other sights to be on your doorstep. This is a peaceful home, designed with comfort in mind – there are chromotherapy lights in the living room and bathrooms which let you change the light to suit your mood. The second bedroom's single bed is only accessible via the ladder, but just like the rest of the furniture, it's both stylish and immaculate. We particularly loved the high living room ceiling, which amplifies the natural light.

Walk to the Uffizi Gallery in a mere two minutes and admire the masterpieces when you stay at this cosy home. It’s the same distance to the beautiful Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, while the medieval splendour of the Ponte Vecchio is four minutes on foot. The stunning Duomo, on the other hand, is an eight-minute stroll. Or let your hosts arrange a Chianti wine tasting trip – they can also organise a personalised tasting itinerary where you can choose up to five glasses from the best Italian labels – well, that’s us sold.

Back at this apartment, have a rest after all that sightseeing (or wine tasting) in the pretty bedroom with its calming grey hues and whitewashed beams. A second kitchen downstairs is all sleek modernity, but the upstairs bedrooms embrace the old world with velvet and hand-painted headboards.

In the historic San Lorenzo district, this cosy apartment is a great choice for work trips or weekend breaks in the city. You can expect to hear some outside noise due to the central location, and we recommend packing light as storage and space are tight. The kitchenette is small with a stove but no oven, but you'll have your pick of Florence's restaurants right on your doorstep. Public transport is close by for traversing the city, and famous hotspots like the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella and Piazza San Lorenzo are just minutes away on foot.

Directly in front of the Baptistry of St John, High Lyric is about as central as it gets. Florence is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and it’s hard to imagine a better place from which to explore. The flat’s a decent size, but while it can hold a maximum of four, there are several other places in the same building, also managed by Scott, so even if you’re in a larger group, you might be able to make it work.

At full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the lounge area so it won’t be the most private of spaces, but with a breakfast bar and dining table in the mix, we think there’s enough room for everyone.

Blessed with a truly wonderful location in the centre of Florence, this apartment knows it can't compete with the illustrious architecture and artworks that lie nearby, so keeps it comparatively simple.

That being said, there's very little to pick fault with inside. The wood floors, neutral colour scheme and bold pieces of modern artwork all lend a contemporary edge, while the high ceilings and wooden beams are the only nods to the city's long history. Admittedly, the kitchen leans more on the space-efficient side, although this won't be a problem if you're hoping to get acquainted with the local culinary tradition.

As well as plenty of restaurants within walking distance, the immediate area is similarly lavish when it comes to galleries, with both Palazzo Strozzi and Museo Novecento taking less than five minutes to reach on foot. The famous Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is only an eight-minute walk, too.
