This delightful wooden home sits a short walk from the shores of Lake Como, in the pretty town of Colico. It’s a fifteen minute walk to the Colico ferry pier where you can hop on a water taxi to beautiful lakeside town like Varenna and Bellagio. Or, head away from the lakeside to discover the area’s hiking trails into the mountains, past castle ruins and old mills.

The home has an eco-friendly vibe with solar panels on the roof and the facade of a clapboard cabin. Set in a wooden deck, even the swimming pool feels natural. Admire the mountains rising around you from the comfort of a sun lounger, or set up for long lazy lunches at the poolside table, shaded by a parasol. Inside, the lounge is flooded with sunlight from two walls of glass, and the reclaimed wood walls and floors continue the eco theme. There’s a mid-century feel to the dine-in kitchen and a second seating area is designed for teenagers and kids to hang out upstairs. Our favourite touch is the den, where a wooden bar and foosball table provide the fun and gym equipment the workout.

As part of a home housing three apartments with a shared outdoor space, you may see some neighbours during your stay. Inside, there’s flexibility with sleeping arrangements, although, at full occupancy, some guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the living area – it's also worth noting that towels aren't included here, so you'll either need to bring your own or pay extra for some. There’s also limited privacy for the guests on the mezzanine floor – that said, you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable night’s sleep here after a day of fresh air activities.

The garden backs onto the lakeside, and you’ve got a view of the glassy water from the swimming pool and private hot tub – perfect after a day of watersports on the lake. Dining and sunning terraces take in the beautiful view from all levels. Inside, big windows in the bedrooms let you wake to a lake view. There’s a certain charm to the 1960s decor and the kitchen is sleek and modern – it comes pre-stocked with groceries and you'll be welcomed with a complimentary dinner.

This well-appointed apartment serves up some beautiful views over Lake Como and the mountains beyond. It's a bright and functional space with sliding patio doors that opens up the home. The furnished terrace is a lovely spot for alfresco meals and Aperols in the sunshine. Downstairs, you'll also have free access to the shared swimming pool for cooling off. At capacity, two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the communal living area – though there are no curtains, so if you're hoping to enjoy a lie-in, you might want to pack an eye mask. It's also worth noting that it takes a short drive to reach the surrounding provinces.

While the interiors aren’t the most soulful or charming, and the second bedroom is pretty basic, overall, it’s a comfortable enough space to unwind. Guests staying here benefit from access to a communal indoor pool and spa, and if you fancy getting in touch with nature, Gravedona Beach is a short drive away.

The central location is equally appealing – making it easy to walk to the nearest beach (Molo di sotto), set sail on boat trips and savour delicious Italian meals in local restaurants. At full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed, but this is a great option for families in search of simplicity and comfort. Children’s amenities can be provided and your host can help organise extras like breakfast and housekeeping.

Nestled in the heart of Varenna, this apartment oozes elegance with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and views over San Giorgio Square. You’ll need to climb stairs to this first-floor home, and there’s no air conditioning here, but step out onto the private terrace and you’ll feel the warm Italian breeze. Location-wise, you’ll see why this apartment caught our eye. Within walking distance of Lake Como, the sandy shores of Molo di Sotto beach, and a plethora of shops and Italian eateries, there’s plenty to occupy your time here. 

In the Heart of Varenna

This apartment sits in the heart of Varenna, a short walk from the picturesque Lake Como. Shops, restaurants, and the train station are also nearby, putting you in a prime position to explore both near and far. While the fuss-free interiors aren't the most exciting, we think this is a practical option for families and friends. The balcony is a lovely spot to relax with a glass of wine – even if it's overlooked a bit by neighbours – and the kitchen is a decent size if you want to prepare meals at home. With the double sofa bed in use, space will be tight, so we think it's best suited for four.

Whispering Waters

Located on the edge of Lake Como, this historic home welcomes you to an atmospheric waterfront escape. Combining tradition and contemporary comfort, the rooms are well suited to groups in search of ease and relaxation. Highlights include the sweet little balcony and the views, plus your host can arrange welcome packs and housekeeping. It’s worth noting the stairs do not have a handrail so this may not be the best option for families with young children, but you will find this is a great base for a lakeside adventure. From here, it’s a short stroll to cafes, bars and restaurants, while the ferry is just 400 metres away.

Offering stunning views over Lake Como, with direct access to the beach, this three-storey villa is perfect for large families or groups of friends. The outside space is the focal point with its heated swimming pool, covered terrace for alfresco dining, and balcony – the perfect spot for a sundowner. There’s even a private jetty for mooring. Your host provides a welcome dinner on the first night, and while the kitchen’s fully equipped, if you don’t fancy cooking during the rest of your time here, you’re a short drive from Menaggio’s charming restaurants. 

The Magic of Lombardy

Situated right on the western shore of the beloved Lake Como, this apartment overlooks the lake from the balcony – ideal for a peaceful morning coffee out in the fresh air. Only a few meters from the beach, the location also puts you within easy driving distance of bars, restaurants and the golf course in Menggio, and Como City is great for a day trip. You can take one of three kayaks out onto the water, but with them being shared with the other apartment, you best be quick or opt for a bicycle to explore the surroundings instead.

Inside, the home doesn’t try to compete with the beauty outdoors, with simple interiors offering a comfortable stay for extended families or groups of friends. But the cherry on the cake? It has to be the outdoor space. An expansive terrace offers alfresco dining opportunities and views across Lake Como, while the Jacuzzi is just the spot for relaxing after a busy day. Petite and pretty, you'll find this home right on the edge of Lake Como, near the centre of Tremezzo. It's ideal for couples or very small families who are looking for some peace and quiet to enjoy this idyllic corner of Italy. 

The kitchen is ready for you to whip up some delicious meals, or simply arrange some antipasti, depending on what you feel like. Mix an Aperol Spritz and head out to the patio to enjoy your apperitif in the fresh air with a view of the lake – your host will even provide comfortable deckchairs and tables. If you need to catch up on emails then there's a dedicated workspace, and at the end of the day you'll love curling up in the perfect pink bedroom. 

You can walk to the centre of Tremezzo and the famous Villa Carlotta in only eight minutes from here, and you're also close to Scalo di Villa Carlotta ferry landing, which can take you around the lake to several points of interest. Plus, the city centre of Como is around a forty-minute drive away – visit the cathedral and wander along the promenade before you hop on the funicular railway for an excellent view.

No matter the hour of day or time of year, this 19th-century stone home overlooking Lake Como is a dream come true. Breakfast on the terrace in the crisp morning breeze, lunch by the sparkling pool, dinner under the pergola while the sun sets over the mountains – you'll be able to make the most of those sensational views all day long. And trust us, they are definitely impressive, but we love the interior here, too. The Larian architectural style is unique to this area – features like arched doorways, brick ceilings and terracotta flooring are warm, cosy and characterful. Multiple living areas filled with antiques give guests plenty of space to spread out, while the kitchen has all the crockery and cookware you'll need to rustle up an Italian feast (there's also a wood oven and a barbecue outside fit for alfresco dining). Whether you're working at the desk or playing a game of pool, this feels like a real family home. 

When you fancy exploring, nearby Santa Maria Rezzonico is one of the most idyllic areas of the lake, with a small cove where you can swim in the blue water. Ten minutes by car is Menaggio – head there for delicious eateries, local shops and the ferry terminal – while picturesque Belaggio is forty minutes away. Whatever you get up to, this is the perfect spot for discovering Lake Como's treasures.

There's also a stunning view of the famous 'Walk of Lovers' from this home. Inside, there's an upside-down layout, with the bedrooms and a bathroom on the lower ground floor.

We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

If you're looking for a home with a view, then they don't get much more awe-inspiring than this. Right on the edge of Lake Como, this sweet apartment offers sweeping vistas across the water and a wonderfully peaceful setting. 

The interior is modern yet welcoming, cloaked in soothing neutral shades. The windows usher in plenty of natural light, and we loved the charming wooden ceilings. However, the jewel in the crown of this home is the outdoor space. Simply wake up and open up the patio doors to step right onto the balcony – it's the perfect place to sip your morning coffee. There's also a terrace with sun loungers where you can admire the sweeping landscapes, and even access to your own tiny beach if you fancy a paddle. 

If you feel like getting out onto the water, then there are a few boat rental companies just a short stroll away. However, if you would prefer to stay on dry land, then there are a few restaurants where you can sip a glass of wine and admire the boats from afar. Plus, the town of Bellagio is just a fifteen-minute car ride away – wander through the cobbled streets, gelato in hand, before taking a stroll through Villa Serbelloni Park.
